- How is it that even when I write a script for a video it is still a mess? In this video, I defend and complain about a couple of characters from Netflix's The Umbrella Academy for far too long! Let me know what you thought about the show and my video! Like comment and subscribe! The last thing Vanya needs is a romantic relationship, she really needs to figure herself out first. They are all broken, but Vanya is so deprived of love that she'll be too dependant on her partner.

thats not how i read their relationship. vanya and allison's relationship in the show is what diego and vanya's relationship is more like in the comics but you know heteros "guy and girl cant just be friends there has to be sexual tension/desire". to quote diego exactly from the comics on his relationship to vanya and his feeling of betrayal with the book "i had no one but i at least thought i had a sister"

The dad didn’t send Luther to the moon because he couldn’t look at him. That is just what Luther thinks. The dad told Klaus the truth in the afterlife. The dad knew Luther needed a purpose, so gave him one until he was needed for the apocalypse stuff.

hearing the full video there are a few (a lot) she didn't get or wasn't put together but I love watching the comic videos that explained characters it really helped me understand them better.

I'm super intrigued by Vanya's storyline and wholeheartedly agree that she needs a girlfriend. ~lol~ I'm also on board to throw all of the awards at Number Five's actor. He was just brilliant. I enjoyed this series far more than I thought I would, it's really very interesting!

i loved your responses. hazel and agnes are the cutest thing i've ever seen. the only character i felt like you really missed stuff on was five. he Also never got to develop and learn social skills outside of the hargreeves home and spent even longer in isolation than luther. it clearly messed him up. he's had time to reflect, but he hasn't really gotten to heal, and i think it would be unfair not to acknowledge that. yes, he is dismissive, snarky and disrespectful to most of the characters most of the time. klaus gets the brunt of this, as he does with everything (bless him, love that dysfunctional man). however, it's not like he's only terrible to klaus, and he is going through second puberty on top of it all. i would say "get this guy in therapy", but literally no therapist would be able to process the kind of issues that he has and would probably assume he was making up the time travel stuff anyways.

Adopted siblings are still siblings. Allison literally refers to Vanya as her sister right off the bat. As someone with two step-brothers (not blood related to me at all), the Luther and Allison relationship was just gross.
I agree but what she's trying to say is that Reginald didn't treat their relationship like father/child even though they call him father in the same way they weren't raised like siblings even though they called each other brother/sister. Like, they didn't develop a normal relationship and it could be debated that they don't have normal sibling relationships for that reason
Random Killjoy i would be inclined to agree if they didn’t try to force the whole sister thing on Allison and Vanya. Because of that relationship, it shows that there was a sibling bond and thus I’m disgusted by any romance between them
@@maijashea if anything i feel like that shows that, as adults who are finally free from their father's control, they are able to define what their relationships mean to them personally. their abusive father figure defined them as siblings, but if allison grows up and decides she doesn't see luther as a brother, but she does see vanya as a sister, i don't see an issue with that.
that being said, i do think the hargreeves in general should make more friends lmao.

If you’re still wondering about the rest of the children: we can kinda guess what’s going to happen in the show from what happens in the comics. In the comics most of the children are abandon by their parents (basically from just being so sudden) and they die or are raised normally without knowledge of power and they later become villains, so who knows what Netflix will do
I think Ben killed himself - probably using Klaus's drugs. His little memorial statue says "May the darkness within find peace in the light" meaning that, in my eyes, he either committed suicide or something happened to do with the Horrors. If Klaus did somehow accidentally have something to do with it, perhaps that explains why Ben is constantly acting as if he cannot leave Klaus, like when he said "Couldn't we go see a movie? Or maybe the sea?" as if he couldn't just go by himself.
I do think suicide was likely, During the show hes shown to be terrified of his powers and hates using them so its likely he possibly killed himself to escape.
My only question though is why does klaus say “I know you weren’t ready to die a horribly painful death at a young age”
maybe he took a bunch of laxatives and exploded from the inside out
in the comics, people keep mentioning just how gruesome his death was, but nothing else. if it was suicide, maybe it wasn't klaus' drugs
The darkness was probably the fact that there is a monster in his body. Like a portal in his fricking stomach.

I have a theory for how Ben died! He has no visible signs of how he died unlike the murder victims of Cha Cha and Hazel and he literally has a monster living inside of him. What if the monster inside him killed him from the inside? That would explain why he has no visible signs of death and it would make sense since in the bank heist scene he seems really hesitant about using his powers; maybe it became too much and he died
i agree with this post. i don't think the tentacles are inside him, i think his power is manifesting a portal to an eldritch universe those things call home. the reason we can't see his mortal wounds: those things pulled him into their universe, literally rending him, inside-out.

I took that as him being uncomfortable turning people into puddles. At one point they show him covered head to toe in blood, you know, as a kid. That's gotta be traumatic.
Diego's power works on any object he throws! Cha Cha reads in Vanya's book "[Diego] can curve any object he throws, particularly knives"
Edit: Also, yes, Allison used her powers multiple times, also confirmed in the show.
Edit Again: In the comics, the rest of the children that were unclaimed by Reginald died, and I believe AG confirmed that on Twitter

I would also add for Luther , that he spent longer time with his father than any one of them so he probably picked up his bad habits so when he tried to kill Vanya he took up his father's bad habit of reacting and not thinking about the situation.
In the comic, Allison's powers shape reality instead of just minds.
Like she'll go in a store asking for a candy bar, and say she heard a Rumor there was one left behind the corner and it would be there.

And if you want to hate him even more, in the comic the numbers he gave to the children were symbolic of their value to him
So when you say the numbers are based on use to him, is it from 1-7 or 7-1? Either way that’s really messed up how he treated all seven of them, the trauma he left all of them( resentment, emotional/ mental abuse, making them over use their powers) is really unforgivable.

YES. The entire time Vanya was on screen I always thought she was a closet lesbian (or maybe even a disaster bi) but it never happened. Eh. I loved the show though lol.

It's been confirmed in Season 2 that Vanya gets a female love interest, her employer Sissy, and she's trying to piece together her memories. 👭💘

Regarding Names:
According to my research (magic school bus emoji) ,
It has been confirmed that Pogo programmed Grace to do many of the things. I think this is especially interesting because Vanya herself mentions to Diego that whenever Grace does something motherly, she just sees Reginald doing it through her. As if the only way he knew how to give his love, was by watching someone do it for him- exactly how he wanted. Yet, it wasn't always Reggie showing his love through Grace like Vanya thought... it was Pogo!
So, I'm pretty sure Pogo named the kids but if you want to say Grace named the kids, it still works haha..
Anyways, In a short paragraph about Diego in an Instagram by Gerard Way, he writes about how the dynamic relationship between Diego and Luther keeps them both stronger and at bay. Luther thought he was number one and acted like it, making him stronger, and Diego wanted to be number one, making him fight harder; but Luther became cocky in thinking that if he made any mistake Deigo would just take over, and Deigo developed a warped sense of competition- making them both weaker. Reginald wanted them strong for combat but weak in their sense-of-self so they never had the strength to over-power him. Reggie-boy knew what he was doing, he manipulated all the variables in the very best way possible to get exactly what he wanted in the end. ((there are many theories that he wanted the apocalypse or that he knew it would happen.. there's even a little easter egg of Grace sewing a moon exploding in the background of a scene, and there are some hints obviously, including characters wondering it out loud in the series itself)) So it isn't surprising to learn about more ways that Reggie manipulated his kids to keep them a certain way- for example he repressed Vanya's powers just to keep her beneath him because he was afraid of someone having more power over him. He used his kids as Lab Rats. And Five saw that. He saw this system of being number and placed and he saw the separation between love from Grace (or pogo) and the 'tough-love' from Reginald. He saw that this was just another one of their games to make them mentally separate these things in their heads, to push it back and to never wonder if they deserved more- and he wanted no part in it. He kept his number to prove it wasn't a rank, but his named; he embraced it as a name as to take away at least some of the power from Reggie controlling them in every way possible. So, Five is known as Five instead of Noel or Tomar or wharver...
Anyway, that's my thoughts on the whole name situation. And I (obviously) agree that Five should stay Five. :) Also, really good video, well put and respectable, very agreeable and thought out. A+
I actually think klaus has a lot of parallels to vanya. their father isolated both of them because of their powers, although for different reasons. they were both treated as a bit of an "odd child". their siblings dont really take them seriously. nobody notices when they're gone. they tend to be excluded from the rest of the family's affairs, although again for different reasons. but their personalities are still so different! tbh I wish we got more klaus + vanya scenes, I think if they managed to try and connect, we'd get something cool.

When you got to Vanya, I thought "well obviously she isn't straight" but then I just remembered Leonard and I don't know how I watched Vanya literally get a boyfriend and it not even occur to me that she was being played straight

THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT LUTHER WITHOUT JUST BASHING HIM! When I first watched the show I was super pissed at him and joined the bandwagon, but I quickly realized how he was abused and traumatized just like his siblings. You don’t see people constantly bashing on vanya for slitting Allison’s throat, or Klaus for throwing away important stuff for the apocalypse. These guys all have trauma and some handle it worse then others.

Honestly though. A: Luther didn't know it was an accident. All Allison told him was that Vanya had powers, and tehn Pogo showed up and said that Vanya murdered like 3 nannies before Hagreeves built Grace. and B: Yes, they should have trusted Allison to get through to Vanya! It went so well the last time! Not like they found her bleeding out on the floor or anything :D

Allison can manipulate you into doing whatever, irrelevant of your personal moral code.
The two times Vanya has used her power to the full extent (that we think) she has brought about the end of the world.
I love Five and his powers are awesome but he can't really compare to his sisters.

About Five's name: I like the idea that Reggie initially told Grace to name six kids meaning the ones on the Academy team but Five, partly because he didn't see the point in having a name when he's already called Five and partly because he's close with Vanya, told Grace that she should name Vanya instead of him
Edit: Five didn't leave before they got names either because when he's stranded in the apocalypse he calls out for Vanya and Ben by name

I think it just suits his character that he’s unsentimental about that sort of thing and five suits him as well as anything. I love five, he was so well cast and really seemed like an old soul. Probably a better actor than alot of the adults, definitely better than Luther and Diego, both very bland (one more than the other... or one more than two should I say...). Thank god five didn’t seem like at all like a ‘child actor’ or I probably couldn’t have watched the whole show.

In the original comics Diego's power isn't just the knife throwing thing, he can also hold his breath for long periods of time.

I think Reginald did start to care for the kids but he only expressed it in certain ways. Like giving Vanya the violin. His dead wife told him to given it to someone who will love it and who he loves so like. Also I read him sending Luther to the moon as trying to give him purpose. He literally built the kids a mom. He was cold and a dick and definitely not father material but I think he did care about the kids in his own fucked up way
I think the weirdest thing that is in only one scene with Reggie's wife is that he's not on earth, he's an alien. And while that explains why he acted so cold and inhumane to the kids, it doesn't excuse it.
Thats why I think that Allison said the "I heard a rumor you loved me" to him but since he did in his own messed up way it didn't work

thank you so much for pointing out all of the things about Luther. personally i feel most relatable with him and his having an identity crisis while being long into adulthood makes his story the best tragedy story and i just love it

So Ben's power is summoning a monster from another dimension through his stomach and sense his gravestone says something like "may the darkness inside you find peace in the light" I think either he killed himself O R his powers mutated/got out of control and consumed him/killed him cuz the monster is coming from inside him. But anyway, RIP Ben.
I think that Allison and Luther, although abnormal, was just them trying to grow and have emotions and that the isolation from others resulted in them just liking each other because no one else was even a possibility. If they weren't so deprived of love they probably wouldn't have liked each other more than siblingly.
Thank you for pointing out it's not a competition for who got it worse. The stubbed toe thesis posits that you stubbed your toe and it sucks, at the same time a refugee across the world smothered their baby because it's crying would alert the solders getting it and everyone hiding with them killed. Both events still suck for the person experiencing it because it is happening to them. Just because my dad hit me repeatedly with a knife doesn't lessen whatever pain you have felt, so again, thank you for pointing out it's not a competition. Also Klaus and five are my favorites even though I relate to all of them.
Spoilers I guess, for those that don't read the comics, but you are wrong about Reginald.
He wasn't Human. Not that this makes anything better for the kids. It actually is a great way to make the point that someone that abuses children in this way can not possibly be human.
That or has no idea how to properly raise human children.

For season 2 im really hoping for more interactions between klaus and vanya because they both are swept under the rug by their siblings and are constantly ignored and underestimated. On top of that they are both disaster gays/bisexuals and I think that they would be a super cool duo.
Also, couldn't Allison help Klaus overcome his addiction? Like, I realize that doesn't make for a good story, but Klaus literally gets tied down by Diego trying to get sober. But nooo, no one has the idea that Allison could just tell him, "I heard a rumour you didn't want to get high for the next seven days" or something even though they all have such a problem with Klaus doing drugs.

My issue is the characters except Klaus and Five were largely static and didn't seem to like...do a lot.
It's really rare to agree so fully with not just one opinion but with every single one of them, like we saw the exact same show where normally there is as much versions of a show as people watching it... So of course, quality content here 😁 I appreciate the fairness for all characters and the look into each form of abuse and consequence

can we, collectively, talk about hargreeves, not as an abusive human-thing, but as an alien trying to blend into humanity (to stop another world's apocalypse!) by adopting the guise of an abusive human-thing? hargreeves, dude, what is your level?

The main problem I had with the show is that it didn't steer into the weirdness of the comics like it should have. Here's a breakdown on a per character basis, with spoilers of course:
1) Luther/ Spaceboy: In the show Luther is injected with a serum that saved his life and made him look like a gorilla. In the comics his head is removed and attached to the body of a martian gorilla. He only required a helmet to survive in space and wore a jetpack and had a raygun.
2) Diego/ The Kraken: In the show, he's a low-budget Batman who can curve the trajectory of anything he throws. In the comics, he could hold his breath indefinitely and was in a punk band with Body (a primate and Inspector Lupo's assistant) and Vanya years back. He is also missing an eye.
3) Allison/ The Rumor: In the comics she has a cybernetic left hand because her original hand was devoured by Dr. Terminal as a child.
4) Klaus/ The Seance: In the show he has evocation, which gives spirits a corporeal form and allows people to see them and lets them interact with objects. In the comics he can speak with the dead, channel the dead to speak through him, possess people, and broadcast his consciousness through airwaves allowing communication via TV.
5) No Name/ The Boy: In the comics, the Temps Aeternalis teach him to perform micro jumps, but in the show it's something he could always do. Additionally, he has had the DNA of the best killers in history infused into him, which makes him an unstoppable killing machine if he so chooses.
6) Ben/ The Horror: In the show Ben is always in the background, but doesn't show up until the Hotel Oblivion arc in volume 3 of the comics.
7) Vanya/ The White Violin: In the show she was manipulated by Leonard/ Harold into using her powers to destroy the Umbrella Academy. In the comics, she is offered a position in the Orchestra Verdammten, an entire group of musicians who when playing together can destroy the world, and dubs herself the White Violin to take revenge.
There's a lot more there, and I hope it explores some really weird stuff with a bigger budget for season two, but I don't know if that is going to happen.
about vanya: 1. her sister rumoured her to believe she was ordinary. i think everyone wants to think there is something special about them and this could have affected her otherwise as well. (theres nothing special about me, theres nothing standing out, nothing i do will be great etc. )
2. she spent almost her whole life taking drugs to suppress her emotions. suddenly she starts feeling things stronger, never having learned to controll her emotions. when we are kids we scream and act out before learning to regulate our emotions.
so vanya is a grown up, but in a way she is emotionally like a child needing guidance... she might know its not right, but that doesnt mean she knows how to controll her reactions.
I'm glad someone else see that in away Allison power is the most powerful. So long as she can rumor you. She can theoretically control the powers of all the other siblings.
I'm really curious if Allison can rumor you in your sleep. With you subconscious or if you have to be conscious for it to take effect? If she is capable of rumoring you in your sleep that's makes her power even more terrifying!

Ben is the most confusing. How did he age after he died? They were on a mission, so where did he get the street clothes?
I think his body wasn't all disfigured because the tentacles are coming through a dimensional portal in his stomach, not from his stomach. Actually, him having a dimensional portal accident might explain how he was able to age after he died as well. Maybe part of him exists in another dimension and him aging causes his ghost to age as well. I bet we never get an answer to this.

I dunno, Five didn't seem to hate Vanya over the book. He even complemented her in episode 1.
Also, about his name, I just assumed he was given one but he didn't like it and just had everyone use 'Five' instead. More likely he just thought of Five as his name so he didn't care.

I don’t understand the shit people give Luther and using the phrase “perceived to be a threat”...Vanya could’ve easily killed Allison. She was obviously completely out of control because that’s something she would never normally do. His actions led to the apocalypse-like every other character’s actions did. His intentions weren’t cruel and were only in the name of protecting.
Watching this after watching season 2 is kinda crazy based on how much you guessed accurately.
In the comics Diego had unrequited love from Vanya and hated that Luther pointed that out during an argument.

1. I think he's now like super super strong
2. I assume he throws everything like that it'd be weird otherwise but knives is what he's trained in and doesn't have a need to throw an apple like that
3. In the comics she makes a deal with Five's boss (a fish on a human body) to regain her voice to help finish Five's old mission to kill Kennedy (trust me I normalised that)
4. The telekinesis thing is strange in the comics he doesn't use it a lot except to float himself and a suitcase when he rocks up at the Academy. Fun fact
5. Grace named them all when they got older and Five was already gone by then. In the comics he's gone before their first mission to stop the eiffel tower rocket floating into space
6. All that's said in the comics is Luther blames himself for Ben's death. On your actual question I think he goes with them but idk
7. In the comics Vanya had amnesia and was paralysed post Apocalypse Suite. She's definitely gay into some form. I don't think she's in love Leonard I think she just gravitated towards him because he's the first person to see her as a normal person

I absolutely love Klaus and you were so right. I agreed with you for most of this and one of the main theories I liked is that when they get sent back the Ben didn't get revived but the other six were born again and that they had to try again numerous times to stop the end of the world.

Thank you for being fair towards Luther, YES, what he did was wrong, but I'm glad you at least acknowledge where he's coming from and the context, it bothers me how everyone just boils it down to "it's all his fault" or even "he's the MAIN REASON" when Leonard was arguably the main figure that pushed Vanya to her dark side, or the fact that she seriously injured Allison.
Luther represents the toxic masculinity of Reginald's abuse, but I feel sorry for him because like the others he lost so much and there is good in him. Luther is a victim as well, that's what I love about The Umbrella Academy, that things aren't black and white and I can see where each character is coming from.
Being the closest to an extension of sorts of Reginald (who wanted to make a helpful superhero group but did it in a toxic way which damaged his children snowballing them into causing the apocalypse), Luther has the capacity of changing and be not just the leader like Reginald wanted, but an actually good one. There is potential to make a beautiful development for Luther and I hope Season 2 delivers.
Robert Sheehan was the best thing in Misfits, a show that had a lot of talented young actors. He also was the only one with a semblance of a personality in that mortal instruments movie.

Because ben is my favorite character I'm gonna say this, I think he had alot of pressure put on him especially by luther to kill during missions and one day that wanted him to do something so out of his comfort zone that he would do it so he decided that it would be better and make everything easier if he killed himself. But I think what he did to kill him was use his tentacles to choke himself to death
