This video essay takes a deep dive into Vanya Hargeeves (Number 7/The White Violin). If you like overthinking tv and conversational tangents than you’ll enjoy this.
Vanya, like her siblings, is the product of childhood abuse and neglect. She’s screwed over by nearly everyone in her life, from her father to her siblings, and then finally her boyfriend. Her whole life is built on a lie and this results in a lot of problems, the problems are hers but soon become everyone else’s.
In this video, we go into her psychology, and the themes and philosophy her story explores. We analyze her character in the context of other tv shows, movies, and visual stories.
Vanya is a lot like other comic book characters so her story will feel really familiar if you ever watched a comic book movie or picked up a comic or manga, or heck watched genre TV. I really wish I could have gone into this more but this video is mostly focused on Vanya with a few tangents here and there. There will be other videos, and maybe I’ll explore this trope more then, (the uncontrollable superpower triggered by strong emotions trope I mean) if people are interested.

Great video. All I add is that the whole ancient counter argument of women being to emotional to handle powers is sexist in it self. Vanya was suppressed by Reginald because he realized that she was the strongest of the 7 and he cant control her, not that she cant control her powers because she could if she was raised normally. He cant use scare tactics to manipulate her or she will lash out, his abusive way of raising them would backfire. There is no doubt or debating there, the ancient notion or belief that women are too emotional is lacking and nonsensical, if that was the case then he would not have chosen female candidates. He would have suppressed Allison as well. The truth is Men are afraid of women who shows strength and they fear not being able to control them. That is it. The emotional argument is trash, especially since most super powers are tied to your emotions, you are as strong as you are mentally. Look at superman, if he was raised and abused as vanya was he would also cause an apocalypse. It doesn't matter if you are male or female, abuse can break anyone. Men do have emotions and its about time we let go of that myth and toxic masculinity. With that being said, nice video, and analysis, Vanya is my favourite character.

Get a life! Allison handled her powers and did Lila! This is strictly about Vanya's character and her SPECIFIC power in the FICTIONAL ahow called UMBRELLA ACADEMY all women!! What brought toxic masculinity into this video about a fictional character other than your obsessive and divisive views on men-women relationships?
It's very easy to point the finger at men for everything then the moment we open our mouths to express ourselves, all we hear is MANSPLAINING! DO we keep quiet or express ourselves? It can't be both, you bunch of confused, self-contradicting indivuals!

    • @mansishukla6779

Totally agree with your point and you couldn't have found a better example than Superman to illustrate it. Infact, the same argument can be made for the Joker, because while he doesn't possess powers like Vanya or Superman, he emerged as a villain because of what he suffered through in his life. Its ridiculous that even after a movie like Joker was made to drive home a point about abuse and neglect and how this pattern backfires on its practitioners, people need to analyse female characters in terms of their being female with less focus on their humanity.
While I don't compare Vanya's and the Joker's intentions or methods, they both demonstrated the same pattern of innate anger built up over the years and an explosive outburst that resulted from it.

At around 7:23, you were describing people and they’re reactions to anti depressants. I was the second thing. Being numb, although helped with the bad feelings, took away my ability to feel anything at all. I couldn’t feel happy, and so all though I didn’t feel like dying from being so sad, I still wasn’t content with existing because I couldn’t feel anything at all.
I’m okay now, in fact, I am very happy with life! I no longer take anti depressants (haven’t for a long time), am happily in a romantic relationship with another being, and am doing well in school. Things CAN get better if you have at least someone who loves and supports you

I just watched this and your video essay about Klaus. Could you please do one for Luther? I feel I'm the only one who doesn't hate him, and I think it would be good if someone did an analysis of what happens to someone who is easily manipulated by their parent and how they struggle to find an identity outside of being their parents' "perfect child" so to speak. In short, Luther deserves just as much love as the rest of the Academy and I would love it if someone made a positive video for him for a change.☺️

I disagree on the part of powerful men control women and women are to emotional for power. The lesson is learning to balance your femininity and masculinity. Vanya was feminine, but she was never given the opportunity to Feel like the others or even to grow, so she has to shove 20 something years of stunted grow in a matter of months. She always been passive (femininity ideal) because fear was instilled in her and when that happens, it stunts your active self from disciplining it traits which is a masculine ideal. Again both concepts are out of balance. I know we are talking about, but a similar thing happened to Luther because in some way his father had some degree of fear in his power as well, and that is why he kept him at side for all these years. The fear that Luther might be better as a leader, so father used him and his love/respect as a footstool in his missions. In order to be a great leader you have to have love which father feared the most. This has nothing to do with the war of female and male. This has something to do with our parents misusing their powers in generations because as the generations progress they focus less of surviving out of fear and more surviving out of love which always scared previous generation.

You could have explained her character pretty neatly if you hadn't gone all gender specific in the middle of the video. Anyone who has been suppressing their emotions - even basic ones like anger would react the way Vanya did when they found out that the neglect and numbness they struggled with since childhood was because of careful manipulation and lying. Women aren't too emotional to handle powers, that's a bullshit argument and no one said that Hargreaves suppressing Vanya's power had anything to do with her being a girl. He would have done the same to any of the boys if they had her powers.
Vanya's reaction is unique to her character because she is sensitive and struggles with self esteem and fear - it really had nothing to do with her gender. The fact that you had to go there means you're not really past the bullshit our ancestors force fed us down the centuries.

Reg didn't do anything but tsk at the 1st nanny's death, then he goes and brings in 2 more human nannies. What was a 4yr old to learn from that?

      @educationalporpoises9592 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MSerrada1 yes, I get that, but the nannies were literally doing nothing that even a four year old would respond to with violence. My niece understood death to at least some degree when she was 3 years old and knew it was not a good thing. I think most toddlers can understand to at least some extent that death is not a good thing. In fact, it's specifically around 4 that kids begin to understand death. Ya can't look at a kid who has deliberately killed five people and go "oh they'll learn."
I never said anything about trying them as adults, I'm just saying she was a terrible person from the beginning.

@@educationalporpoises9592 Dude, there are children who throw tantrums because they don't want to eat something ! Maybe most 4 years-old know that killing is bad because they had a normal education, Reggie didn't seem to bother explaining her why what she did was wrong, and he kept changing the nannies as if they were disposable before finally building an indestructible robot mum ( Who was a better parent than him btw). Your behaviour as a toddler doesn't define your personality as an adult.

@@jujublue4426 it kinda did though, because she responded exactly the same way to uprooting her childhood trauma as an adult. She tried to kill her family, murdered the monkey dude, and had pretty much zero regard for the lives around her. The only excusable reason for her to do that is if part of her power is a split personality sorta thing, which seems like a possible excuse.
