  • The Hargeeves siblings have been scattered all around Dallas in the 60s. Now that is a lot to adjust to, especially when Five shows up and tells them the apocalypse is coming back. Some handle it better than others.

It's not clear that "young" five actually have "old" five the correct calculations. He said he did, but I don't totally believe him. Though it seems like time travel in Umbrella Academy is not circular, so there may be a ton of branches of the timeline with various different scenarios.

I feel like no one is talking about the fact that we learned Grace was a smart and strong-willed scientist this season, which makes the fact that Reginald based Mom off her but made her a mild-mannered subservient 50's housewife so much worse. He couldn't get the real woman for whatever reason, so he used her likeness to create the version of her he wanted. That had me *hollering* at the screen

Luther allowing the two fives to manipulate him makes sense for his character. He was meant to be a leader of the Umbrella Academy but his desire for his fathers approval turned him into the ultimate follower. Also Five going after Lila alone is on brand for his character too. He is arrogant. So he probably thought even if she attacks him he can fight her off easily.

Honestly, that's what his appearance in the comics is like too. They don't go super in-depth into his character. They were blaming him for getting them scattered across time when he could have left them to all die and just save himself but he didn’t. They were also treating him like he did understand how hard their lives are when he saw his siblings die 3 times and got stuck alone in the apocalypse for 45 years. In season 3 they can’t really blame five for the messed up timeline since he found a way for them to get back to their timeline and stop both of the apocalypses if they just made the time limit that was set on the briefcase.

It feels like people are forgetting that the thesis of this whole show is that these are all emotionally broken children who are making bad choices related to trauma. Their father saw their journey as "put aside your humanity, be objective, stop making the bad choices, and be smarter than you are vulnerable." but that is ultimately the mindset that destroyed their emotional maturities. They have these images of heroes over them, but they aren't those people. They aren't super heroes by nature, they're children with powers. The show is a case study on the fallout of emotional neglect. They don't stop being the humans that they are just because they learned a lesson. Luther is emotionally impulsive and gullible because he spent all his time, even in to his adult life, without relationships, taking the words of one man as gospel. He never really had to deal with negative emotions because he never gave himself the personhood to do so. Of course he would listen to whichever stern authoritative Five is talking to him, because he' a non-skeptical person. Of course he reacts dramatically to his emotional impulses, because he's never felt any of these ways before. And of course he cares about pleasing his stern authoritative new boss and doesn't want to risk his place as somebody's #1 to fight another apocalypse. Diego's Jfk obsession isn't him "fighting the plot" he didn't even know about the apocalypse before he let it destroy his sanity. He was latching on to the most important thing in the world at the time because he needs to be important. He's broken. When Diego starts associating the apocalypse with the assassination, it is clearly portrayed as him being irrational. It's why he takes such pride in being scouted by the organization, because it means he's high on the food chain of importance. He levels out when he feels like he's doing important things. The show is also constantly portrayed by unreliable narrators. Five isn't the authority on time travel, he's constantly wrong about a lot of things, and it's pretty clear that the show's rules on time travel are "time changes it doesn't split, there's no back to the future disappearing, paradoxes are a joke that we literally explain as a medical condition, don't worry about it" but Five, in all his arrogance, has to feel like he knows all the rules to everything, so he wastes their time doing something dumb.
These siblings are not who they need to be. If they were, this show would be over pretty quick. The villains are portrayed as, more or less, pretty average people. It's about the recovery process. It's not about power levels and tactics.

He has also aged in ghost form from teen to adulthood. He seems to have the least amount of trauma, perhaps because death freed him from Hargreaves. So I am very curious what bangs Ben will be like.
2: Alison could have grabbed a bullhorn and changed the phrase "I have a dream" in MLK speech to "I heard a rumor" and speed the Civil Rights movement up by like 30 years. The fact that she was willing to interfere with history but not enough to make the most meaningful impact was frustrating.

It was too close not to be on purpose though so it probably means something that I'm not seeing lol (Also sad that Hazel was just gone in the first few minutes of the first episode, hoping to see more of him, and the lack of violin with Vanya was annoying, kind of understandable with the memory loss but they could have still worked that in, it's a big part of her character)

I actually enjoyed it. Because even though it started with their own lives, the result was much different for a reason. Vanya actually had room to grow as a person and as a member as the family, Luther is getting over his daddy issues, Diego has lost his grudge from the number system, and Allison was fighting with her own power. They falter in some of these things from time to time, but all in all they stood by it. Now, these people actually come together and act like a family. This is a major change that actually makes them win for once! Mostly. I agree it was similar at first, but became a much more different and ended very differently. Just my little ol opinion

I actually really like Luther this season. Luther finally let go of his idealized version of Reggie bc he had a one on one and he got shanked in the heart.
He's experiencing moving on his own for the first time as himself. He's meeting people, eating outside, wallowing in his feelings.
He felt accepted by Ruby and he was told by Diego's landlord that he's a good fit for boxing.
Allison thought they were all dead. She was back in time for a year. She lost her voice and her family was gone. The era that isn't welcoming for her either. She didn't think she'd get back to the present but when Luther said they can go back the first thing she mentioned was Claire.

It never really got resolved. He never redeemed himself nor was he condemned for creating a completely bullshit cult because he's a narcissistic hedonist. I wonder if the writers were making a joke of that, considering the cultists disbelieving when he says he's a fraud (which, I haven't been in any cults, but didn't seem remotely believable), but the alternative is that it's a major plot hook for season 3. For the most part, though, Klaus doesn't grow an inch from where he got to by the end of season 1. Klaus only "accidently" started the cult in the sense that creating a cult wasn't his intention when he started. He did very intentionly manipulate and use people to get things like money and sex from them. They don't go into exhaustive detail but we see why he targeted the old lady and how he was able to convice her community that he was a prophet. We hear through Ben, who calls him a Narcissist, that many of his followers gave up thier money and wealth to follow him. Klaus at the start of the story has just gotten bored with being a cult leader and I suspect he may even be disappointed with himself (since he knows the love of his life would not approve).

Understandable that he was so overwhelmed w/ having a body again, understandable that he was in love with the girl and would never have any other opportunity to interact with her. Understandable that he wanted to make sure that Klaus' made it to the meet up as to 1) not be left behind and further screw up the timeline, and 2) not mess things up for his siblings. Not understandable that he continued to fight to stay in Klaus' body when he had arrived at the meeting spot, fighting so forcibly against Klaus' will that Klaus literally threw up in order to eject Ben from his body, because, yes, Ben probably just wanted to continue to experience the world again, but that is a very selfish reason to straight up violate another person, and go against their will, as if it's less important than his own/
I would like to state that i love Ben, and absolutely agree that he is very distracting indeed, and is, like, the best among the family, but also, this: bad decision. In my opinion.

Yes I think it's pretty weird that this is a well-known taboo and thing that you shouldn't have in Media and then some writers just go ahead and do it anyway

    • @LunaWitcher
      @LunaWitcher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The problem is that their whole arc in the comics is based around that. They _tried_ to tone it down for the show, and ended up ruining both characters. Allison is not super sane, and Luther takes the brunt of it. If you remove their fondness for each other, there is almost no character left. So much so that the writers didn't even try to make Luther fight his daddy issues, they just turned him into a manchild comedic relief, and they gave Allison another love interest because they couldn't think of anything else for her.

I can understand Allison Hargreeves not wanting to use her power a lot because she has a strong moral center she knows that her using powers too much or for the wrong purpose could easily make herself a monster. Take the Purple Man, the same type of powers but the evilest villain ever.

I don't think it's that he adopted new kids (the parents of the children who he managed to successfully steal would have still been existent meaning it would be the same children) I think it's that he saw what a failure Umbrella Academy was and changed something, my personal theory on what he changed is that he showed them affection (see New Ben calling him "dad")

@Quilo Sky there's a difference between not mentioning her and showing no signs of missing her. Even a lingering glance on a mother and child or hearing the name Claire and then turning knowing in your sensible brain she isn't there, but feeling pulled to look anyway. In fiction there are a lot of ways to indicate lingering feelings of missing someone without it being a blatent long drawn out conversation with another character or even a "verbal" mention.

@Quilo Sky I have mixed feelings about it. Overall, I adored this season. And I HATE when time travel shows ignore problems like racisim or homophobia and I thought both were handled well. That being said, I can agree when I found a plot point lacking and this was a bit of a lack and fail.

I'm personally just hoping that Ben being gone will finally kick Klaus into some tasty tasty character development. Without Ben being there to scold Klaus and always give him an outlet/audience for his thoughts, I imagine Klaus will be pretty fucked up. Though, I'm hoping it'll make him realize that he needs to be the one to fix up his life. I love Klaus with all my heart and I'd love to see him vow to not lose another person close to him!! His recovery could be a super super interesting character arc if handled well.
