    I don’t know anything about this Quinn guy but the way I listen to him tell herberts universe makes me remember how Herbert warned us about charismatic leaders.. it’s the utmost complement I can think of in his work my friend, well done keep it up I can’t stop listening, and because of you I know this universe better then I could have ever hoped for ✊

    I first read Dune in 1974 at the suggestion of my high school english teacher after she saw I was reading Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land". I went on to read all of Frank Herbert's subsequent books but could not really appreciate his son Brian's follow on books in this series. I think your work here is excellent and like it very much. You seem to know more than I could ever hope to know without you to present it. Great work and don't stop. Liked and subscribed.

      I felt the same way about Brian's books. It just seemed to hamfisted to me. I liked Frank's purposeful vagueness. It was a story about Humanity not so much technology, I think Brian focused to much on the latter.

      Heinlein’s one of the best. His dialogue is a bit cringe, but he had an understanding of human nature not seen in his contemporaries, excepting Herbert, but Herbert seemed more focused on the mystical and religious rather than the psychological.

      @@happyhammer1 Every author has their own window with which they see the world. I think it would have done themselves and the property a disservice to try and emulate Frank's style.

    Always loved this part of the Dune mythology. Such complex interplay over long periods of time. Would love to see a video on the fraufreluches specifically, as it ties in closely with the Major and Minor Houses structure.

    It makes so much sense, it is what is happening today too with monopolization through big tech and politicians getting shares and special counselor positions within the corporations after their political terms. We are seeing the formation CHOAM in our own world, really prophetic and shows Frank Herbert knew humanity. We need the Worm God Emperor to save us from ourselves.

    You inspired me to re-read the Dune series for the first time in 30+ years. I've been taking my time and really getting into it. These books were great in High School, but man they are on a whole new level this time. I missed so much the first 2 times I read them. My advice, don't speed read! Love your history lesson CHOAM it helps put it all into perspective.

    My friend and I appreciate the hard work and quality you put into these videos!!! Your videos were one of the ways I introduced my friend to the Dune series. I couldn't describe the rich details and complexity of Frank Herbert's world in the same way you do in these videos. I never could find many artworks that closely resembled what I imagined when reading Dune until I watched these videos. I don't know where you get these images, but with them all put together its fantastic.

    You should cover the Great Scattering

    • @Kneedragon1962
      @Kneedragon1962 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sam, I would suspect that's coming. It needs to start with the idea that the Worm could see possible futures, and he (like his father Paul) could see that humans were almost certainly doomed. There was one possible future, which they dubbed The Golden Path, which avoided that end. To bring about the Golden Path, one of them had to wear the worm, and live for 30 thousand years, and hold back and contain and stymie all development during that time. When he died, it was like a champagne cork. Mankind scattered, and only by scattering, could we finally be so widely distributed that no one event or threat could end humanity.
      Then, after a time, some people from the scattering, came back....

    • @pyronixcore
      @pyronixcore 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The Scattering happens between God Emperor and Heretics, and it's made pretty clear very quickly that the Honoured Matres and other "Lost Ones" are not simply returning to the Imperium, but stumbled upon it while they fled in terror from their own known worlds and territories in simply staggering numbers.

    You're doing a great job with these Dune videos. Don't get discouraged by those who have given you grief for things like pronunciation, etc. This is a fictional world that is subject to interpretation. If not conforming to some fanboy's or fangirl's expectation is causing them to get bent out of shape they need to check their attitude. Let them put in the time and effort to do their own if they think they can do it better.

    Awesome video, as usual!
    Though we don't always agree about taste (I didn't like Foundation or Avalon, for example) it's always a pleasure to watch your content!
    For your consideration (Other series to make videos about):
    - The CULTURE series by Iain Banks: utopian science fiction society, with lots of deeper thoughts, vast world builing and character developement, some unique concepts. My favorite sci-fi, parallel to Dune, and sadly somewhat uderrated, I believe.
    - The DYING EARTH by Jack Vance (and other, even GRRM wrote for an anthology in this world): one of the great classics, quirky, vast world, very pulpy, but intriguing.
    - The HYPERION CANTOS: I'm just starting to read it, but i think it might have potential.
    ... I'd love to see your takes on the DARK SOULS series, but it's another medium entirely, so i doubt it would be up your alley... maybe the WITCHER, or DISCWORLD?

      @Anti-Federalist 1776 that's not fair, the Asians were only set back by imperial conflicts and have been at least on par with us for the supermajority of history, and the Native Americans had no decently domesticable animal to substitute to be a beast of burden, so their wheel wasn't as useful, plus they had the Aztecs to deal with...
      What I'm amazed by is the Arabs, as their intelligence and notable culture is barely below those of the best (86-92 vs 96-105 IQ) yet they developed a religion (with some help) so backwards that they: burnt the refurbished Library of Alexandria (Caesar burnt down one of the buildings housing texts, many of which had backups) because the books were either superfluous to the Qur'an or heresy; started more global conflicts than Austria; are still stoning gays, women who show too much skin, women who are raped, women who complain that women are being stoned, people who follow the wrong fairytale, people who follow the right fairytale but not hard enough, etc.; and so much other dumb shit. I mean seriously why can't they be more like their cousins: the Hebrews/Israelites? I mean, yes the Jews have fucked up beliefs (male genital mutilation) and have subverted more nations than the CIA, but They aren't as bad as (quite) the Muslims...

    5:30 - Great Cthulhu's tentacles, that's one fucking ENORMOUS Guild Navigator.... is it ever indicated anywhere in the books that the Navigators ARE actually capable of getting THAT BIG? I mean, I know their constant lifelong exposure to high-quality Melange gas gradually mutates them to the point that by the height of their careers as Navigators, they need permanent Suspensor Field support since any remaining regular human features are by then vestigial and temporary. Without the confines of a standard human frame, their bodies can, and often do, grow quite a bit larger.
    But even then, if they're depicted as bigger than normal human size at all, they're usually shown to be about the size of something like a medium-sized cetacean - my personal favorite is this one: cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/000/181/090/large/simon-dubuc-guildnavigatorstages.jpg?1409115859
    Even the giant flying dog shit with the creepyass webbed face and vaguely-but-still-unnervingly-sexual mouth from David Lynch's nightmares looks to only be about 12 or so feet long...
    So I can't help but wonder what the artist of this picture was imagining must've happened to make this poor Navigator grow to the size of a 2-storey HOUSE!

    After the discovery of the sea-routes to the Indies the Dutch merchants and investors would compete and undercut prices for their valuable spices. This stopped after the founding of the VOC (United East-Indian company). This company had a state-sponsored monopoly on all trade in the far East. With these advantages they wrested controll of the spice-rich islands from the Portuguese and became the first international mega corporation.

      @The Modern Stoic I'm guessing you are the one that hasn't read much. Stop picking fights online and go look up the East India Trading Company, the opium wars, the crusades, Byzantium, the Roman Empire, the Persians, the Babylonians, Egypt, or literally any other kingdom since the dawn of fucking history. Ignorance isn't a good look for you dear.

      @The Modern Stoic What you call "Cherry picking" composes most of the entire history of humanity. I could name more but I am not going to give you a libraries worth of god damn history. Now would you kindly fuck off? The comment is a god damn year old and you're whineing about it. We get it. You're a conservative, or a capitalist, or some kind of idiot maga apologist. Now go the fuck away.

    Quinn the Dune guy as some would call him is a person with deep insight into the world of Dune he has explained things that I can not nor would not have thought of them in that way. Leto the 2nd the God emperor and his plan for humans and the Golden path are things that make great movies , which I hope to see one day as the Dune series continues to be transformed from books into movies, I think with Quinn’s the Dune guys help this could become a reality

    I don't remember most of this from the six books. It seems too realistic to have come from the pen of Brian. Did you get it from the six books, or from interviewins with Frank? Or whence? Thank you for answer.

    I would like to know about the space ships of Dune and there abilities in combat if that's every gone over

    • @SonofSethoitae
      @SonofSethoitae 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given that the Guild has a monopoly on interstellar travel, and given that they forbid violence of any kind aboard Heighliners, I would guess that there was no space combat in the Corrino Empire.

    • @dendrous6907
      @dendrous6907 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, but I would still think it would happen I can't see a house planet leaving it's space unguarded to be so easily invaded. Crazy to think it didn't exist

      +Chad “Dendrous” Boerma I still doubt it. They could, but how could they guarentee that those weapons would never be used against the Guild? It seems like a recipe for getting one's Guild privileges revoked.
      There's also the issue of coordinating space combat without computers.

    • @dendrous6907
      @dendrous6907 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The space combat without computers wouldn't be that hard if you did it ship broadside fire with straight fire weapons or missiles.I don't disagree with your guild comment but the navigators can come off the ships if I remember correctly so it would be a fly into the system standard travel while the guild leaves then fight vs system guard ships and invaders. But I don't remember ever running into this in the books of course I've only read dune and the children so was hoping this guy could clarify and in the children paul comments about the emperors ship to ground combat drills.

      +Chad “Dendrous” Boerma I don't doubt that it's possible, but it seems risky and difficult. Maybe IOIAF knows something I don't.
