I love the original series! I'm ve read it over 10 times... Mainly because I bought the Brian Herbert books and I struggled and eventually gave up on them... The disappointment was too much
Very cool! I think cyborgs was definitely one part of it. If you think about the way the universe was in Heretics & Chapter house, it pretty much flip-flopped everything in the time of the old empire. The way everything was in book one got pretty much turned upside down through the last two books. I think that all culminated with the sisterhood being merged with the honored Matres . My overall Take from the ending was like that of Abraham Lincoln ending the Civil War. Instead of two factions killing each other off until one is the ultimate victor; I think what Frank Herbert was going with here is the idea that the merging of the two factions would be the best solution. Perhaps the idea of cyborg (evil robotics blended with humans) was a kind of side line parallel to reflect how everything Else in the dune universe would become.
I’m so glad I was wildly financially irresponsible and recently bought a copy the Dune Encyclopedia (COVID Shopping). I’m *really* looking forward to reading it now!!
It's been too long since I read these books. My memory is that spice-less space travel was rediscovered, not invented. Someone realized that if humanity came from Earth and spice from Arrakis, then humanity had to have had faster than light technology.
The problem with pre-spice FTL flight was that it needed a thinking machine, which were anathema. Human guidance had a 50% or higher chance of flying into an uncomputed star or planet.
Can I just say that I love your intro music. I threw my phone in my car and this video started playing on its own. Even though I couldn't see the screen I knew it was one of your videos!
Out of print and non canon, books 7 & 8 are based on notes left by Frank Herbert in a locked 📦. So, the Dune Encyclopedia does not really follow the Dune story.
I've got a theory about what the great enemy was meant to be: face dancers in control of thinking machines. Since the facedancers gained independence by taking many human lives, the commentary here would be that the great enemy is ourselves. The commentary on the use of thinking machines would be abuse of technology, which you have talked about before.
I was pretty sure the great enemy was just social stagnation, like, just like today's world is smaller than it used to be, the galaxy has become interconected, dune happens in an era where single political entities have the technological capability to rule entire galaxies. There is also the fact that in the universe, our galaxy is just a small tiny point of light. The machines have been defeated already once, so the great enemy was having all your eggs in one basket. Be it centralization of power, or of human habited space. That was my take at least.
So, would the famine times be the “Great Typhoon Struggle” Leto hinted at in Children of Dune? Humanity would never be the same after the struggle after Lego’s death.
I don't mean to nag, but is there any update on the Ultimate Guide to Dune: Chapterhouse video? Last time I remember it mentioned it was supposed to be released last december.
I had previously overlooked the many parallels between Dune and Warhammer 40,000 (miniature military tabletop battle strategy game). The age of strife of WH40k and this age of famines here in Dune. In Warhammer the whole thing was a consequence of reliance upon technology and entrusting too much of humankind’s’ governance with AI. In Dune it seems a cause was the reliance upon spice for warp speed travel. If you follow the 40k lore very deeply at all, you’d find similarities that are undeniable. They’re both great. THANKS FOR SHARING ABOUT THIS!! I ought to read those books you made mention of that highlight these times, and the encyclopedia! Scarier still, is how our humankind is truly on a similar course, veering towards the timeline just before the age of famine in Dune. So many humans would love to scream it from the mountaintops, “Green Light!! Go!! Apocalypse in Full Effect, the horns are a ‘tootin!!”. People seem to genuinely want to either live out Revelations, or would like to think that they were there when it happened, or maybe they’d just like to think that they lived during a very exciting and momentous chapter of mankind’s history. I feel that life itself is exciting. Enough not to feel any morbid desires to see firsthand the end of our World as we know it.

Pretty good video! When I was reading God Emperor of Dune, I had a feeling that machines or AIs were being foreshadowed and the information produced from this research tops it off!
I'm one of those who still thinks the Face Dancers made infinitely better antagonist because of the abilities and complications exhibited through Rakian Chief Priest Hedley Tuek for example. That AI angle was lazy, and overplayed for the depth that was the Dune universe. Dune went from being extraordinary, creative and philosophical to mundane, stereotypical and boring... But that's just my opinion.
In God Emperor of Dune, the God Emperor may have stopped the rise of the machines on Ix. At the end of Chapterhouse Dune, Daniel and Marty are advanced Face Dancers. If there were to be machines or some sort of AI, it would be used as a distraction by highly evolved Face Dancers or Tleilaxu against the Humans so they can launch their dominance in all aspects of human societies across the universe.

3,000 years of stability? No, I think it was more enforced stagnation with a purpose, when Leto transcended, humanity would explode across the galaxy, without the spice to extend life the major birthrate would have to explode just to maintain, only with much more a resistance to prescience, due to Leto's own breed program. Which is why I feel like he essentially said that everything will turn out alright for humanity despite all of the conflicts in his 4th book. Dedicating his remaining time to showing how the golden path will essentially play out specifically in every book after it. That way he can have room to tell a story, make money off his books, and secure the ending of his book through essential narrative point of the golden path.
This cyborg talk kinda helps the bridge to Brian’s notion that Daniel and Marty are AI. Maybe the improved facedancers are AI-fused cyborgs with organic tissues. Helps them both blend in as intended and accounts for how they are suddenly able to infiltrate memories and personas with the use of the T shaped device they tried on Duncan’s tutor.
