      Modern in a nutshell. It is a great format but if you want to play long games you'd be better off playing EDH.

      From my personal experience, Modern games tend to last 6 or 7 turns max. But it might come from me playing Tron and knowing when I have lost and my opponents knowing when they have lost. But most games are decided on turn 4.

    Finals, 15 min, now thats what I call magic. mainly because it took me 4 years to build Affinity,so it feels good to see this deck piloted to a GP win.

    I really wish Mox Opal wasn’t so expensive. My affinity deck doesn’t have any, but I’m thinking of maybe getting some. It would make the deck pretty much quintuple in price though.

      Ethan Rasmussen People say the same thing about every deck that's winning. The game itself is complicated as is and every deck requires knowledge of the decks ins and outs to play them. Not every deck has to be dredge, ad naseum or storm to take skill.

    6 permanents on each field on turn 1, 15 minute video... the entire modern format in a nutshell.

  • @catarinaalexandra314
    @catarinaalexandra314 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    ya,not a great show...also, am i the only one that thinks that giving players the oponent decklist is not a good idea? it makes the games less interesting because we as viewers dont get to see surprise in the players face and the need to adapt in the moment.

    • @catarinaalexandra314
      @catarinaalexandra314 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      surprise is good...surprise can reward rogue players that make non-conventional deck and sideboard choices.Also, not having acess to decklists rewards pre tornament preparation and extended knowledge of the format. I am not convinced.
      Also, why are not all finals best of 5 games?

    • @catarinaalexandra314
      @catarinaalexandra314 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      but modern is already much about the sidebooard as in that format, more than in standard,there are very powerfull hate cards that are there just for very specific matchups.
      Also, as a viewer i find it strange that the final gets a special treatment (decklist) that doesn`t happen in the other rounds. Its the same tournament but it is pretty diferent to compete agains someone that knows your deck and you also knows yours.
      As a spectator of a game, sport if you will, the surprise factor is very important.
      I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

    • @Nanofuture87
      @Nanofuture87 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I could be mistaken, but I think the reason that players are given decklists after the swiss rounds is to reduce the incentive to "scout" your opponents. If one player is on a team and can successfully scout out their opponent's list while the other player is by him or herself, then that player has an advantage that isn't related to playing the game.

    • @Furavara
      @Furavara 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As Nanofuture87 pointed out, the big players practically had decklits, because in this superteams there were players free at day 2 tojust roam aound the top table and get every information they could spot, which made it so, that the size and dedication of your superteam actually gave you an edge in the tournament aside from prepration. The limit that, they give out the information, that can be gained from such tactics.

    Why didn't he even attempt to bluff the Blade Splicer? Mani could have at least doubted on his turn and waited for more Overseer activations, giving him another turn. Poor decision making for a pro, really.

    Damn, do all good tournament decks go over 400 dollars? And that's just ONE deck. Considering the vart variety and number of cards in modern, in order to build multiple good decks one would have to spend a fortune. MTGO it is then..

      If that's a joke, it isn't funny.

    • @Furavara
      @Furavara 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the thing with affinity is and always has been: there is enough hate for it out there to ensure it can never dominate a format, only a tournament. Dredge had this role in legacy for a long time: you lost when you did not have the 8 hatecards required in your board. (actually, individual losses can and will happen, but you did have a worse matchup then 50/50 without the hate.)
      But since these hateslots are often dead against other deck, people toy around with how much hate to pack, and then it can happen that affinity dominates a tournament. Usually, the affinity stance in the next tournament is worse because of that.

    • @KiLLERJA0
      @KiLLERJA0 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you dint have to go through all that, i was JK with the fact last few years wizard has been banning any decks that are popular and seem unfair. and in that match it made affinity look broken and unfair. just my attempt at a bad joke...

      well he have only 2 stony silence and except from conopy no way to draw cards soooo....vials are still good play

  • @elib2670
    @elib2670 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    fracturing gust/creeping corrosion seem like such better sideboard tech against affinity. every time I see a stony silence it does jack

    • @JSuperfly
      @JSuperfly 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eli B both seem good but too expensive for affinitys fast draws. stony silence stops springleaf drum and mox, ravager and overseer. a stony silence turn 2 on the play turns all of affinitys draws into dead or strictly 1/1s with no abilities bar signal pest pumps

    • @goelandz878
      @goelandz878 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kataki generally better at least whenever I play it.

    • @Nanofuture87
      @Nanofuture87 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alain Poirier It depends on the board state really. In general though, the issue with Kataki is that it (a) gives the Affinity player choices and (b) is easier for Affinity to remove. It's definitely good and not something you want to see your opponent play as Affinity, but Stony Silence really is what gives Affinity players nightmares.

    • @goelandz878
      @goelandz878 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, but I was talking fracturing gust/creeping vs other option. The only removal affinity run is 4 burn so Kataki mostly stick and end the game on turn 2 and is tutorable (Coco and CoC). Stony is just better in general cause it work vs other artifact matchup like tron. I was just talking vs affinity specifically.

    Affinity = no fun final

  • @ForTheViolence
    @ForTheViolence 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    People are crying for a death shadow ban, but I feel like affinity is the most toxic deck ever. You either lose to a stoney silence immediately. Or you just drop your entire hand with zero cost cards. It honestly looks like yugioh more than magic the gathering. A game where floodgates = gg and their is no cost to cast cards.

    • @Nanofuture87
      @Nanofuture87 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. The "deploy your entire hand" strategy is not always possible or even the best line.
      2. You can play a lot of cards, but the majority of those cards are individually weak and easily removed, even without dedicated hate. Cards like kolaghan's command or electrolyze are almost always 2 for 1s, and path to exile, fatal push, and lightning bolt work on almost everything.
      3. If you want to talk about cheating on mana, decks like Grixis Death's Shadow (with delve creatures), Dredge, and Living End are doing much worse things than Affinity is.
      Of the "unfair" linear decks, Affinity is actually one of the more fair ones.

    • @Nanofuture87
      @Nanofuture87 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Artorius K. It's more because Modern doesn't tend to showcase the newest set. It's just as well though, the Pro Tours weren't really healthy for Modern.
      +Evan Coffey Plenty of decks take quite a bit longer, and there's always the sorcery of time-shifted magic.

      SRLPlay Affinity is WAY more than $600. I'd say $1100 would be more realistic. I'd also say that Death's Shadow is the better deck. It puts up the best results in the meta.
