    Thanks for all your time and help with people; here in the Uk I am medically shielded so until 1st Aug Im stuck indoors with a boat that's itching for my attention. Stay safe and thanks to you for being here makes difference to the people who are staying in as well as the ones able to get to their boat and work.

    Andy, hang in there man. With the help of your vids I just finished the floor of our 31 JC hull. From framing, decking, 45 yards of CSM, 35 yards of 1708, 20 gallons of polyester, 3 gallons of epoxy, and a ton of hours. We are ready for a new type of deck paint, most of the locals are recommending it. It’s called Trucrete. Two part epoxy base, color flakes for contrast/anti skid, and two final coats of polyaspartic top coat. Fellow Captain did his three years ago and it looks brand new today. Not cheap but is hard as concrete after a day. Probably not something I would use on a cruiser, but for commercial boats, it wears and looks great. Thanks for all you do!

    When possible, I usually use both white and grey primer paint. Alternating color between coats is so much easier to see where you've been and what you've missed between each coat. I think it's a good way to get even coats. Primers are - from my experience - pretty good at coating, if you finish with white, it'll be white even if the underlying coat was grey...

    I have used wet edge and have been extremely satisfied. It held up to tennis ball sized hail last summer so no complaints. Edit: the panel painted with it faces straight up so it took direct hits from the hail. Lost a solar panel in that storm,

      I had some Brightside that ended up the wrong shade. It sat for 10 years, until I decided to paint my basement stairs with it. 25 years later, it's starting to wear. And I do use my basement a lot.

    I used wet edge last year. What finally worked best was a low nap roller which needed scotch tape to get the loose hairs off, then tipping with an artist quality brush. Cheap paint brushes left marks

    I've used total boat wet edge before. What I found that worked the best was using to roll the paint up and down and then tip in a horizontal directions from wet edge to dry edge. Also, I found that using a foam brush worked better and tip the brush in a small amount of paint without any thinner. It turned out like glass.

    I’ve used it on the back deck of my 42 commander since a previous owner butchered it with a previous one part ( deck also going to get carpeted so 2 part wasn’t necessary) honestly for a one part I was impressed, much more durable than people would expect and I’ve used interlux and other one part brands, this is by far my go to for anything where a one part can be used

  • @stevethurlow6284
    @stevethurlow6284 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    you talked about painting in your shop, go buy a 10 x20 steel tarp frame or two if you need one longer but use some thin painters plastic wide enough to cover the roof and some shorter to use on the side walls. I use some spring clamps to join the edges, that way you don't have to clean the whole shop and the lights still shine through. In the summer, I set up a AC unit at one end but turn it off when you start painting

    Great work Andy! In regards to painting- watched your alexseal videos again and am priming Fri/Saturday with high build 302 and finishing with final 442. In 75 degree weather, if I wait 18-20 hours(less than 24), can I apply the 442 without sanding in. Between?
    Can I use their topcoat paint on the bottom of the boat if I don’t plan on leaving the boat in salt water more than an occasional 1-2 days?THX -smc

    Back in the early 1980s I used a 1 part marine gelcoat to paint unprepared steel mounting system for a 10 foot satellite antennae. I could easily see the brush strokes right after application yet when we went to put the antennae on it the next day it was a perfectly smooth, shiny surface. Note: There was no thinner used at all, brush application on standing steel post directly from the can. The paint lasted extremely well, 10 years later there was not one flaw in the finish. Definitely a good product, I just wish I could remember what brand it was.

    Perfect timing for this video. I'm restoring a 1970 Hartley Vixen. It's glass over ply construction with 50 years of god knows what or how many coats on it! My plan is to use a high build primer and block that back then use a 2k topcoat. I'd rather roll it than spray it (even though I'm a spray painter by trade) as I'm working in my garage and it will save a heap of time on masking Etc. Once I'm done, I'll block it back and buff it up.
    I'm curious how this pain will flatten out on a vertical surface?

    That can says top side paint, is there a product similar that can be used on the hull of the boat? Or would you just recommend staying with 2 parts for under water line?

    • @PawlSpring
      @PawlSpring 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even though the can says Top Side, I would use a two part for the top side (hull) of a boat because of the hardness and scuff resistance of 2-part systems. It is (relatively) easy to paint the topsides with a two part - so large of an area uninterrupted by fittings; perfect for roll & tip of a two part if you can't spray.

    It looks like wet edge is a good product but my question is why use it when there are products like quantum99 and alexseal out there?
    This might be a good paint for a boot stripe maybe?
    Yeah it might be cheaper per gallon....but I'm a buy once cry once kinda guy. Being able to wet sand and repair a coating is paramount to cost, and thats because like most of your viewers....I'm not a professional lol. I sprayed my 20ft boat with quantum99 and had very few runs but a swarm of kamikaze insects hit the fresh paint. And being able to make repairs saved my a$$

    I'm always watching videos. My idea of putting poly resin over epoxy is on par with you. But, A big but is. Why am I seeing you use gelcoat over the fairing compound. Its an epoxy isn't it. Or does something in the fairing compound make this epoxy different to allow gel out to be applied. Yes I understand color makes a good leveling indicator. Just curious.

      I'd like to know as well...is the wet edge durable?

    Well, I'm not judging you with prioritizing patrons. Heaven knows I would do the same. The only thing I would say is to be a bit careful with going with a content paywall/patreon only videos. I used to watch a very popular show called Roadkill on youtube that went that way and its dead now.

    I've used total boat paint it sucks I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy after you roll it on you have no time to tip because it tack up almost instantly. and if I got to buy some other wetting agent to add to it to make it flow longer, I might as well just buy the better paint to start with. You get what you pay for . And trust me I paid

    im in hawaii so none of the excellent products you use are finanically practical here... the shipping can easily triple the base cost. so.... i use good ol rustoleum marine paint which is available at our local big box, applied VERY THIN (almost as a wash) with a foam roller. have to say i'm very happy with the results. apparently other folks think so as well because they actually paint their cars with it.
