Hi Andy, I'd like to start off by saying you sir are a true craftsman. Amazing attention to detail every step of the way with excellent content flow and video production. I have a tip to share if you find it useful. When roller painting a panel such as the one in the video or a house door for instance, I found that laying the paint on the entire surface quickly then a one time lay off works best. Thus I lay it on fast and don’t worry about it being 100% finished looking at this point, just get the bulk of it on there evenly and fast. Then I do the back roll one time, and one time only in one continuous pass from left to right then it is hands off stop. No touch-ups or spot rolling anything, just let dry or it will make it worse every time. Anytime I have ever rolled in sections or temporarily rolled opposite a leading wet edge I could always see the lap line afterwards using the light. My roller jobs now look like the paint was perfectly applied with a spray gun once I adopted this painting practice. Less coats, less sanding, less time, less work, hope that helps.
Hi Andy, happy fathers day. Small tip from Holland. This one was given by the owner of IJssel coat. Before using these rollers roll them between your hands to get all loose stuff out of them as this can ruin your paint job.
Happy Fathers Day Andy. Quick tip when sanding small things on a bench. I use cheap roll up yoga mats. I love them it holds the work and can be cut to fit your work area. I usually get them at Dollar stores or 5 Below.
This past winter, I decided to refinish my boat using Alexseal. The boat had Imron paint on it that was ready to be redone. I am using Alexseal's entire system and have already used their fairing, high build and finish primer. I have been incredibly impressed with these products, basing this on many years of painting boats including using Interlux Perfection (Interthane Plus) over the last 20+ years. I am going to roll on the Alexseal topcoats. I actually tested the products on my dinghy over the winter and could not believe that the stuff actually set up and dried in 40 degree temps in January. Anyway, I was hoping you'd be one step ahead of me this spring so I could learn from your experience, but I will be applying the topcoats this week. I look forward to all of your videos and have learned a ton. Bob N.
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.... this is perfect timing. I’m at this stage on my project and trying to decide what route to go. I’ve never had much luck with roll and tip, and I know I want a better finish than just rolling. This looks very promising 👍🏼. Thanks Andy and happy Dad’s day to you too!
I live in Mount Pleasant, across the river from Charleston! I didn’t know their headquarters were here! I wish I could have met you Andy. Happy Father’s Day to you Sir!
I think the can says you can apply up to 3mils max at a time yes the primer is very thin but sets up to tack very fast and I normaly recoat in like 30 to 45 min up to the desired mills. I let it stand for full cure after that and I have not had any issues. Good video
Happy Father’s Day Andy I wanna day thank you for your videos ! You’re the best please keep posting and sharing with us thank you I’m currently rebuilding my 20’ aquasport good day ! 🤙🤙🤙
Had never sprayed before, but needed to do a set of Mercury outboard cowlings ... Used Alexseal, and was very happy with the results.. and 18 months later, with minimal care, it still looks good... Their tech support is also very good (will talk to us mortals, and not just yacht applicators)... My one comment with regard to application, would be that their tech sheet says you can overcoat the primer 2hrs later at 68 degrees, and one 1hr at 77 degrees - I know in my case I was in the high 70's / low 80's and was able to put on 2-3 coats of primer (to cover the black) in a 4hr timespan.
I used Alexseal on Luana. Their high build sands like no primer I've ever used. It's hard but sands like butter and didn't load up my sand paper. I did like 4-6 base coats and 3 mixed clear and 3 clear... I over did it and am not a great painter, but everyone thinks my 78 Catalina is a brand new boat. 5 years and still looks beautiful.
Thank you so much for the information! You have been a huge help to myself and I'm sure many others who have found you. You've given me the confidence to try and turn a $200 Craigslist find (Needs major transom work) into a nice little boat for the family.
Happy fathers day Andy! Thank for this video, I have been eagerly waiting the videos on the Alexseal paint as I have a huge painting project coming up soon and I want to do it myself so this stuff looks perfect.
You need to roll off the edge of the roller on the side you are moving away from and you won't see the roller lines. If you want to go both directions, roll off both sides. Tip the roller at about a 15 degree angle and roll out the edge(s). So if you are painting from left to right, roll off the left side edge and vice versa... Learned this from painting 100's of house interiors so you only roll it once and don't have to feather the roller or play around with it to get rid of the lines.
I am planning a large Alexseal paint job on the deck of my sailboat this summer so your timing is perfect with your series on painting with Alexseal products. The rumor is that this stuff is very good and relatively easy to use. It's not that easy to find though. In Southern California it is carried by San Diego Marine Exchange but nowhere else that I have seen.
Andy, greetings from Canada, eh! Thank you for this video - and for all of the others. Very helpful. I look forward to your postings each week. Cheers! Wally
Ok, big question..... now that you have used them all, which is your favorite paint between Alexseal, Quantum99, and AwlCraft? Love these videos btw. You are a huge asset to you tube and DIY'ers everywhere.
Can this paint be used outdoors? Due to the height of my boat. A shed isnt an option. Plus its in the uper 90s here in south Alabama with high humidity.
I'm not sure what help I can be as not an expert but nobody has answered you so I'll give it a go. Years ago me and my friends painted cars from time to time and after any kind of sanding or if the work piece has been sitting you need to clean the panel to a very high standard before you can apply more paint. For cars we would buy, I think it was polishing rag that came on a roll, add a little bit of thinners or something called panel wipe which is basically a solvent cleaner and even if the surface looked clean we would clean it again. I have never actually used them but I think tac rags just are a modern pretreated, disposable equivalent? Cleanliness really is next to godlessness with paint and you can never be too clean. I've seen plenty of people spaying cars only to see perfect fingerprints show through the wet paint because someone had touched a panel after it had been wiped and the oils on their skin caused the paint to react. As I said I'm no expert but I hope I helped a little or maybe this will prompt someone who knows more than me to give a better answer? :-)
A tack rag is a purpose bought product. It is a piece of loosely woven material with a sticky substance on it. As you wipe the panel any sanding dust, dust, or sundry bits will stick to the cloth. The tack cloth doesn't leave any residue on the surface. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tack_cloth
I just rolled and tipped this to a finish I'm very happy with however there is dust from my shop especially on the top cap. Would you recommend wet sanding and buffing to remove the surface contamination?
happy fathers day Andy! i am - as im writing this - repainting the upper deck of my widdle 26' macgregor. i bought some rustoleum paint from Lowes and im just rolling it on. pretty good results but nothing like that dory you had at the start of the video. i'd like to try this alexseal stuff ( i know i have to sand off all the rustoleum and primer but thats why God gave us power sanders) but would very much prefer to buy it from your store. not sure how it works but i know there are links and if i buy some things you get a much deserved commission. would you kindly post a link for this paint and primer? thank you! :)
Does the Alexseal paint still flow out and have the same or similar spray like finish if applied to the bottom of a boat that wasn't turned upside down?
What are your thoughts on Interlux perfection? Their tech literature says the light colors can be rolled only without tipping for a smooth finish. I did exactly that on the last video I posted and the perfection settled out to a smooth mirror like finish on most of the hull. The areas that didn't were more likely than not my fault for not having sanded the barrier coat smooth enough. Thoughts?
@@boatworkstoday Hey andy , did you ever consider doing a skill share Course to make extra Dough ? I believe it the same as youtube Vids so you could re-use Footage
Andy, I am working on a Rybo Runner resto, I am thinking of rolling the under deck areas and the hatch liners from this video. I think you will agree Kindly let me know Thanks
Thanks for another great video! You're doing us DIY folks a great service. I wonder what you're using for test panels? I'm looking for something cheap to practice on.
Hello Andy how are you, I really enjoy and have learned alot from your videos. Ok I have a few questions, ok I have a 1971 trojan express flybridge. I would like to repaint top side and flybridge. I have a few spots on deck towards the bow and a few spots on cabin roof were the fiberglass seems soft. I want to overlay with fiberglass and paint. Can you give me a few pointers. Thank you
If possible, since you are evaluating Alexseal, could you please continue with how to paint aluminum with this product? I have a tuna tower that I need to paint. It isn't pitted but, dull to the point I can't restore it. Thank you for your help!
Hi Andy! Just finished sanding the TotalProtect on my deck project. Question about the Alexseal Tack Rags you mention in this video. My local distributer can't find them, and I can't find 'em, not even a mention on Google. Maybe they're not available to the public. Any pointers? Thanks for the confidence, Peter
has anyone ever done an entire hull with this paint? I am seriously considering doing the Hull of my 20 year old 22 foot center console in a light gray. My questions is how much paint should I buy to complete a project of a 22 foot boat? Thank you in advance if you have ever used this product. Also thank you for these videos. You are the very best!!!!
Great video mate! I learn so much watching your channel. I’d like to try this product on my boat but this stuff is hard to find here in Australia. I finally found a 4 ltr tin on eBay here in Australia it looks like it’s been sitting around for a while though so I just wanted to ask if there is a shelf life on this product and if I can use a primer other than alexseal brand because I can’t find any here? Thanks
Hi Andy, Why would it be a good idea to go up to 25% reducer in a breeze? Heck, I’m wondering after watching this video why use the reducer at all, it looks pretty “watery” without it and it seems more prone to burning through with the sander. OK, so that’s two questions.. :)
Andy, My '77 Bristol 32 is in need of cockpit and exterior cabin painting. The original topside gel coat is still in great shape and still polishes out beautifully. Decks were painted several years ago. After comparisons, I want to try Alexseal roll and tip. About two quarts of primer and two of top coat should be more than enough. What color of white top coat do you recommend? Where would you recommend I purchase Alexseal primer, paint,l, reducer, brushing liquid, etc...? Al Deltaville, Va.
I took my boat to Puerto Vallarta Mexico and left it in the water for 5 months. When i hauled it out of the water i was horrified. Muscles all over the below water line. Lower leg leaking oil. To get the muscles off i have had to use a steel chisel and hammer which damages the gel coat. I will have to repair the gel coat with liquid steel or gel coat then paint. We are now building stands to put the boat in the air for further clean up and repair. I am thinking of using gel coat to fill in scrapes and gouges then painting. 2855 Bayliner cira sunbridge will be sitting on center stands 2 feet in the air for sanding and painting. I plan on using anti fouling paint in case i tale it down to Mexico again. The water was so toxic it ate off most of the bottom paint along with the zinks. I am looking for guidance going forward with this project. (paint brands, primer etc) Thanks in advnce)
Brother by any chance do you have ideia of durability of this paint ? because i was reading their manufacture care for the paint and it requires to wash the boat with fresh water all the time to remove the salt , i saw the results, due to your labor and knowledge it really impressed me , but i am not sure about the durability of this material since i have a 35ft sail boat and i will not remove the boat to wash with fresh water any time soon
So alexseal doesnt recommend using an epoxy sealer primer as a last step before painting? I usually shoot transtar 2k epoxy primer sealer and then shoot imron in a wet on wet application. Obviously u cant do wet on wet with roll and tip but I would have thought they still would have wanted a primer/ sealer before the paint? Great video though
So.....If you have one part paint (Interlux Brightsides) on your boat , sand it and paint it with Totalboat Primer, you can topcoat with Alexseal 2 part paint?
Curious how this compares to the EMC genius bucket you previously reviewed as the best DIY paint. As I recall, that one had some orange peel and you were planning to experiment with some roll/tip techniques, or a wet-sand afterwards??
Hey andy, just subbed i love your content!! You prob heard this before but have a quick question! On another video like a basic resin 101, they said you cant use polyester resin when your bonding old to new! But ive seen you do it before so i just wanted your opinion! I want to do some boat repair and it is so much cheaper then epoxy, but wanted an expert opinion first!! Thanks so much man!!!
Say you have a boat with paint on it do you have to sand the old paint all the way off before you can use the paint on it or do you just have to scuff it up?
Hello , I don't know if you still respond to these video's but I have a couple of questions. I bought an old 1972 Kenner fish-n-ski boat to restore. It is fiberglass and 19 ft x 7 ft at the beam. How can I put together a materials list ? I.e. how much primer and paint will it take to paint my boat ? I'm still on the fence about the roller or the air gun methods of application. I will be working by myself so which method would you use if working alone ? Thanks and I saw something about you having a store ? What is your store website information ? thanks ---
Hey bud how can I reach you been following your stuff for awhile I'm trying to re do my bayliner that I bought and flip it but I have alot of cosmetics issues but theirs questions that I don't have any answers on like if I'm using alexseal for my paint option and I'm all the way down to fiberglass do I have to use 305 filler then a primer or can I go to a high build and some other stuff please help
Andy, Thank you for all your videos. They are incredibly informative and entertaining. My boat has several areas with molded in non-skid. I really don't want to grind those out and apply a non-skid paint. What method of application would you recommend for this product in those areas? Also, what product (Alexseal or otherwise) would you recommend for filling in stress cracks and gel coat chips?
Just wondering, can alexseal be used straight on to gel coat, or does the gel coat need to be sanded back to a thin layer?? I'm going to paint a whole hull
'Fish eyes' happen when there is either grease (any kind) or silicone on the surface you're painting. It results in a small spot where the paint won't stick and kind of leaves a ridge around the edge looking literally like a fish eye.
I'm now a distributor for Alexseal and can ship anywhere in the Continental US! Check it out! www.millerboatworks.com
Is it impossible to get fairing compound? Its showing out of stock

Happy Father’s Day, looking forward to seeing your paint video, I’ll be doing the deck of a 25 ft. Sailboat this summer.
Great tip on starting inboard of the edge on your first pass.

Could you please explain the 'tack rag' bit in more detail, I have not heard of that before.

Not for sale in Australia? only found it on e bay product 1 qrt as you say, we say 4 liters $272, postage $121. as we say in Australia Bugger.
That primer seems a bit hard to work with. Is there other primers that will work with the Alexseal paint that might be a bit more DIY "noob" friendly?
What is your store website information ? thanks ---
Id like to use this stuff but it never says anywhere if it can be used over dryed epoxy resin
Do you need to recoat?
Where's part 2? Is it named something non-obvious or was it never uploaded? I tried searching for it.
Yes, where is pt 2? I'm getting ready to paint my sailboat, but want to see it 2 first.
Where can I buy it and get delivered? All I can find is distributors that only sell to businesses.
I really need to ask an expert about redoing my 26 foot Pearson sailboat. How to take off all the paint and put back on, the almost best paint.
Would you classify Alexseal as a evolutionary step or a quantum leap relative to whats available on the market?
HEY BOATWORKS IS THIS OK TO USE ON THE SIDE OF A BOAT
Hey bud how can I reach you been following your stuff for awhile I'm trying to re do my bayliner that I bought and flip it but I have alot of cosmetics issues but theirs questions that I don't have any answers on like if I'm using alexseal for my paint option and I'm all the way down to fiberglass do I have to use 305 filler then a primer or can I go to a high build and some other stuff please help
What kind of sander are you using. Id like to use electric instead of air
KiwiGrip
So is this a polyester, polyurethane or epoxy based paint?
is this paint good for below the waterline on a trailered boat?
Great paint but the cost is high
Can you order direct from the company if your not a business?
Why didn’t you add 5018 to roll?
I've always heard that style of roller called "weenie rollers," because they are shaped like hot dogs. Might just be a Texas thing though.
Just wondering, can alexseal be used straight on to gel coat, or does the gel coat need to be sanded back to a thin layer??
I'm going to paint a whole hull
Exactly the question I have, have you done this? What were the results?
You have a link for alexseal?
I just added it in the description, can't believe I forgot that lol!
Make more videos!!
Take my Money $$$ !!!!
At 3:36 you mention "fish eyes". What are they?
'Fish eyes' happen when there is either grease (any kind) or silicone on the surface you're painting. It results in a small spot where the paint won't stick and kind of leaves a ridge around the edge looking literally like a fish eye.
