  • Delving into the nuanced landscape of trauma, this talk redefines its contours. Beyond the apparent shockwaves of accidents or abuse, the lens of somatic experiencing unveils trauma as an entity residing within physiology, spanning tissues, nerves, and interactions. The ebb and flow of trauma's grip unfolds as dysregulation within one's system. Manifesting either as rigid fixity or graceful flow, this analogy likens it to a dam obstructing water's natural course.Peeling back the layers of identity, the interplay between personality and individuality emerges. Molded by adaptive responses to societal norms, authentic individuality can languish in the shadows. Yet, some craft safeguarding personalities - a guise concealing pain, as seen in comedians wielding humor as armor. Unlocking healing's door, the crux lies in fostering incremental capacity. Analogous to mastering a new skill or language, the journey entails nurturing the ability to navigate emotions, sensations, and responses. Nervous system regulation transcends mere emotional release. It's a symphony of physiological cues - trembles, tears - incrementally knitting the tapestry of healing and resilience.

    I liked the books "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels and "The Body Keeps the Score". They helped me slow down and learn to release the toxicity that was in me, left over from childhood traumas.

    First part of the discussion for me seemed to be about false self vs authentic self.

      Our authentic self is illustrated well in the books by Carol Tuttle, ‘the Child Whisperer’ and ‘it’s just my nature’ where she shows the 4 natures of the human system and how that can be nurtured or otherwise due to the environment. 💖

    I had a very creative relative that discovered later in life he had experienced s*x trauma as a 4 yr old & after he went through therapy said his urge to “create” went away.

    You are confusing the fawn response with appeasement. Fawning is complete submissiveness (dorsal vagal parasympathetic) Appeasement is more sympathetic. In other words, surviving by proactively reading the cues of others in order to mask.

      But there’s a spectrum, appeasement often becomes automatic and is no longer a conscious choice and becomes part of the social engagement system which is in the autonomic nervous system. Good discussion!

      @@lavenderkisses9461 I think you are reading into or misunderstanding what I am saying. Yes, appeasement is reflexive or autonomic. In other words, even though it is more "self-consciously proactive" (which takes a certain skill) rather than say in a more passive (dorsal vagus) fawning state, it is, nonetheless and without contradiction an implicit part of our reflexive autonomic nervous system. What is true is the obvious, "It is not somatically registered as a "safe" place to be.
