"I'm Alan Saunders - I'll be back next week." I thought I recognized the voice of Alan Saunders introducing this piece. What a broadcaster he was! I only got to know his _Philosopher's Zone_ as a podcast right at the end of his life, but hearing his voice so unexpectedly brings tears to my eyes. I found this tribute by Martha Nussbaum online:
_'Alan Saunders was a prince among broadcasters. Of all the journalists I've ever met, he had the deepest love of, and also understanding of, philosophy, and his passion for ideas made doing a program with him a highlight of one's year -- even long distance by phone, and even more in person in the studio. What he brought to public discussion was priceless'._

I think we miss much in our public educational systems by not jousting with these kinds of prevailing canons of thought. Ideas, history and philosophy are integral IMO to young, even to older students, and to maturity!

Criminality cannot be cured. Not really. It can be suppressed in the person, but true criminals are incurable and punishment is punishment and also removal from society to protect citizens.

The weird thing is, I would have guessed that you would have thought like that. Maybe I do understand conservatives!

Haven't plenty of people who previously stole to pay for drugs been cured of stealing as a result of being cured of (or at least recovered from) addiction to drugs?

The definition of crime is different in different countries.
