Thank you very much for uploading these episodes of Men of Ideas. It is quite helpful and extremly interesting to see and hear the philosophers speak about their positions and ideas themself.
"Your ideas are DETERMINED, by your position in the class struggle." (Says Marx.) Thus, "Marx is no philosopher at all; he's a theorist of history..." Berlin published very little; but one book he did write and publish, was a book on Marx. This guy, Sir Isaiah Berlin, is amazing, a genius. And here we have him on tape, speaking to us, doing his thing, philosophizing. Many thanks to Brian Magee and may he rest in peace, this great man. Of course, Berlin has also passed away and is at peace.

I find Berlin particularly delightful too. He is so enthusiastic about the subject. Us having common Russian origins helps too I guess.
An element of western philosophy aims to categorise ideas and explains why certain ideas fail. Marx's ideas failed. Therefore Marx was a western philosopher.
Probably a polymath who at various points overstretched the bounds of his knowledge. And in doing so demonstrated the limits of others.
"In the end a man has to accept personal responsibility and do what he thinks right." This is what Truman did, accept personal responsibillity, and "did what he thought right." Still, that decision is for good reasons, to this day, very debatable and controversial.

What is philosophy? Questioning fundamental assumptions. The examination of questions we don't know how to answer empirically or formally. Philosophy doesn't provide us with an answer to what to do, it illuminates the options for actions and beliefs and the reasoning behind those options. Three important philosophical endeavors are determining what type of question we are dealing with, clarifying concepts, and analyzing models of analogy through which we interpret the world (Berlin, 00:00 - 44:47).

If Magee did not simplify what Isaiah enigmatically prose we were certainly lost in the world of "meaning"

Turgenyev: "I don't guide the reader; I don't tell him the answer, the moral answer, how he should do nor not do this, who is in the right, who is in the wrong," etc. I apologize. I had to just pause it, at "Turgenyev..." And then I paraphrased. But this was just astonishing. Berlin here claims that Tolstoy, Dickens and certain others, actually try to do our thinking for us! By "labelling" certain people as "heroes." Am I getting this? Did I get that right? This guy is incredible!
Isiaih berlin, what a top bloke. Normally when I come across someone called Isiaih I say that they're called that because one of their eyes higher than the other one. But I like Mr Berlin that much that I'm not going to mention it
Well I read Russell's "History of Philosophy," the chapters on Spinoza and Hegel, I read this half a century ago, and came gradually to a similar conclusion, namely, Whitehead's comment on Plato about his "footnotes." Thomas Aquinas, too, boils down, as it were, not to a "model" or a "pattern," but to a way of life, faith. Yet for Thomas, reason is quite the ally of faith, and I guess faith in that way build upon nature. Thus there is an added delight and also a challenge in Aquinas, to study all the "details," that is, the real or imagined arguments against his own arguments, which he builds up as a kind of fortress or "defense," while coming to terms with those very objections or legitimate questions.
I thought it was Western Philosophy that Russell wrote about.
First, many thanks to Brian McGee for being able to quote the United States declaration of independence. Second of all, this is one of the rare interviews in which McGee seems to be trying to help the interviewee along a little bit. An interesting example of interview technique.
"There are certain things that no man may choose, no matter what the consequences." So, one truly "questions more" about Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on innocent civilians, and prior to that, there were the "fire-bombings."

I suppose now, given this truth about language, I need to be more careful here, in these comments, in my choice of words. And it's not just I. WE ALL have this responsibility. This is awesome thinking. Sometimes I'm flippant and talk about "falling out of my chair." But these words by Sir Isaiah are incredibly powerful and true. And he's not even a believer. However, it appears that he is an "anonymous Christian," a la Karl Rahner.

While I sympathise with the idea that children are "natural" philosophers of a sort, Berlin's imagined interaction between a child and father about Napoleon's reincarnation strikes me as totally implausible XD
Ortega y Gasset will have to be listened to, sooner or later. Albert Camus said Ortega had the finest mind in Europe. Jacques Barzun said much the same more recently. The new world being born today was predicted by Ortega, as Western Civ wanes. Or so I think.
What does he mean by saying a circle is metaphysically true?
Dont are a guide for life, you read , take knowledge and later you decide , what yo do with your life....
"The power of metaphysical ideas is very great..." [a la these Fichteans and Schellingians, who rely not on experience, but on "metaphysical ideas"']. Those of us who have an "idealistic" side, need to N.B. I mean, really. And so, What about Christian "philosophy" or "biblical theology"? The question needs to be addressed seriously. Those of us claim to be believers, unless we want to risk losing touch with reality, need to take this great genius, and this gigantic human heart, to heart.

Condorcet: We have a science of bees and beavers; Why shouldn't we have a science of human nature as well? Because we have a different, a more exalted, level of "consciousness." Pardon me. I had to pause and share this remark about Condorcet's remark, about the animal kingdom, as compared to the "human kingdom." Berlin did not say all this.
