Brilliant, just wanted to say thanks!!! Took my driver swing back to basics yesterday, this series has saved my game!!!!! Hit more fairways than I have in a very long time. Thanks again 👍🏌️♂️👍🏌️♂️👍🏌️♂️
I played in a pro am and the pro showed a “fairway finder “ with the driver. Tee the ball a little lower and place it more in the middle of your narrower stance. Then grip down on the club and make a full swing. Don’t try to steer the ball. It’s a little shorter than your full drive but I find it really accurate. Much better than a 3wood.
Well done Mr Crossfield, I specifically made a comment about this on the Buzza video because it is what I do. I generally drop down a club for accuracy instead of slowing the swing speed of the driver. I will now have to visit the range and test to make sure this strategy still produces the best result. Good stuff.
Another great thought provoking vid boys. My take on it is that us amateurs potentially have big misses with both clubs. 20 yards shorter with the 3 wood means you don't go so deep into the trees? Where is in reality to avoid that situation you probably need to hit a 6 iron to avoid the trees for certain and give up 100 yards. No ones gonna do that. This year I grab the driver as often as poss and when it pays off on tight holes. You inevitably beat your playing partner with high confidence levels.
This video is spot on. Only for me I was struggling with the opposite. I rip the 3 wood. I would be scared to go after the driver, trying to steer it. Finally realized that my strike was consistent enough to rip Driver.
Same exact feeling for me. Strike patterns are worse on the driver but the face to path control is loads better. The 3-wood used to be my go to club but when I got my attack angles up and started hitting the driver, it was night and day difference.
Great video again bruh, most people would go 3 wood for safety when it's not true. Put this with buzza's stuff and we all basically need to practice smashing driver!!
This is amazing to me because I am completely opposite of Dan. I hit my 3 wood so much more straighter and less emotional then my driver. When I pull my 3 wood it’s not safety it’s comfort. I swing with tension with my driver then my 3 wood. Makes no sense because of what you said 460 cc!! Should be more comfortable. Good stuff as usual
Only hit 1 out of 14 fairways yesterday, but still had my best round of the year.... 76 nett 69 Used driver, 3 wood and 2 UDI Mid and short game saved the day. (3 birdies)
I tested my Driver, 5 wood and 18°driving iron for this when I first downloaded my GPS app, looking at total distance and dispersion on the same hole on the same day. For me the driving iron was buy far the most accurate for side to side dispersion, but miss hits lost too much distance. I now use my driver on every par 4 or 5 I can. I've also practiced a low hybrid punch shot that gets me back in play for the bad driver days.
Pulled 4 hybrid out of the bag(kept 3 hybrid)to carry 2-F9 drivers. I cut one of them down to 44” and added weight to head to bring back the swing weight. Right now it money with a very limited amount of yardage loss, if any. It’s unbelievable how easier it is to create an in to out swing. Arrow straight!
Loads to learn from these video's. I've always been more sideways with the 3w and fall back to the 5w. Not sure why I carry a 3w to be honest. Really enjoying the content at the minute.
love this experiment- the key is not the three wood option as a fairway finder- its what you can guarantee - in Dan's case clearly its not his 3 wood, spend some time finding what it is :-) - you need to do this on course with the physcology in front of you as well ideally- there is no visual fear. TBH as well, he should be going for his drives as well- strokes gained and all that. That being said there is a huge amount of kudos to the modern driver and how they have changed the game for a lot of us !
Years ago I would sometimes play a 3 wood off the Tee, now with the larger Drivers my accuracy has improved and I no longer carry a 3 wood; a couple of Hybrids only. A great video as usual........definitely thought provoking 🤔👍
Its really interesting like you said.. Whats more interesting is having a shorter shaft in your driver. Do you get the best of both or not? Please test 3 wood length driver shafts in a driver.. It would be like a followup to this video. The average player doesnt hit his driver like Dan or Mark!
Thats me!! I had this debate in my head last week 😂 definitely feel 'safer' with driver than 3W even though I'm not playing well at all. Lack of practice as you said contributes to this. I dropped down to 4i even on the first tee, duffed it right into the bushes! Back to driver last time out 🎯
Great video. I 100% believe in the swing more fully idea - and as such I am using my 21 degree hybrid now off a tee when i want that 230 place the ball in the fairway shot because it is way more accurate than the 3 wood
Brilliant Mark how to stitch up Dan with that comment regarding testing it by the afternoon (open up trap door and walk in sir) funnily enough since watching these vlogs my 3 wood has almost become redundant as my use driver has increased...cheers
Thought about this playing yesterday- The only time I really considered using a fairway finding shot, it required two conditions I felt nervous about the tee shot and the penalty for a miss was a lost ball or OOB. So if there is no massive penalty for missing the fairway- like you can find the ball in play- bash away with the driver and gouge which is the modern way. I drive the ball well he says modestly, but also I have a reliable fairway finder that I can use under pressure. I spent and do spend a lot of time making sure I have this shot ( I can get in the habit of using it to much when I play though) . Also on the course I play there are a couple of shots I can't hit driver because you run out of fairway, 2 run into water hazards and one is a dog leg there are three tee shots that have to be like 230 to 250 yards of the tee in distance terms- I find it hard to hit driver this quietly- I am with your recent post, smoke it don't steer it.
I carry an SLDR mini driver instead of a 3 wood, it’s my safe find the fairway club. Use the G400 driver when I’ve got a bit more fairway or safer runoff areas. Not great with the mini driver off the deck though
Hey guy's...could you do a comparison of how grip size effects clubhead speed. I recently switched to the Jumbomax ultralite grip and I'm not noticing any difference in my distance. I am noticing that my fingers on my right hand are not sore after I play 27 holes using the larger grip. Keep up the great work, you guy's are a dynamic trio...Thanks
Great video lads, could you possibly do a video of a beginner golfer that has a slice with driver? I was out playing today and it destroyed my game 😥 I think you would have loads of interest in it 🙏
For a high handicapper (23) the decision on whether to hit driver or 3 wood off the tee is generally about wind direction and ball flight. My 3 wood tends to have a lower ball flight leading to greater distance off the tee compared to driver when playing into the wind! It's all about skill levels I suppose and maybe this video is for better players.
I would like to go on the record to say that I answered the Driver would go further than the 3-wood because my driver usually carries 25-35 yards more than my 3-wood. As my 3-wood is consistently straighter which in turn I’m more confident with a 3-wood in my hands than a driver. Also, my 3-wood carries 230-240 yards which is plenty distance to have a mid-low iron into the greens. Driver is just fun to hit!! #GripIt&RipIt
Loved this topic. I finally got a 3 wood after many years without and struggled with what to hit off the tee. Side note, does Dan ever do Head Pro stuff or does he just play?! Can’t blame him!
Lee Whittaker Golf Yes I know he does. However, the majority of club pros here in Ontario have little time to actually play. Too busy organizing tournaments and trying to make money during the 6 months where they can. Commenting on how lucky Dan is that he also spends so much time actually playing.
My 3 wood at the moment is a little obsolete as my driver is way more accurate off the tee and my 3 wood goes too far off the tee. So i tend to use a hybrid when trying to find a fairway.
I am better with my driver. One major reason is my miss is consistent with my driver. Thus I can play for it and let it lose. I will still hit my wood off the tee but misses are definitely shorter. Strokes gained!!!
Because if the amount of times I’d use my 3wood I took it out of my bag and added another power hybrid. I only now use the 3 when I play courses that have specific holes where it is useful. Not always happy with results because I rarely practice with it!
I dont even carry 3 wood for that exact reason!!! I'd feel much more comfortable using driver and missing the odd few times but no that I'm committing. So if I do miss I'm still getting max distance. Where as 3 wood I want to hit fairways which means I slow swing speed down. Missing left a lot!!! I carry 19° 5 wood and 21° hybrid. Commitment is key for me
I’ve tried to hit the club that goes the distance to the fattest part of the fairway. I don’t necessarily know if I’m more accurate with a certain club, but my fairway % is definitely better.
I wonder with both this video and Matt’s the issue is that the club is will fall into place better when you swing faster. What would the faster vs smoother/find fairway swing look like on something like GEARS or other 3D swing tracker
Silly question, but are the shafts the same in the driver and 3-wood? Guessing Dan has had a fit for his 3-wood or did he just go for the same shaft as his driver.
@Mark Crossfield, 3 wood or Driver; Serious thought question Mr C!! How can you guys get accurate feedback; when you're in a wooden box(studio), with NO atmospheric constraints to helping factors or hindering the flight of the ball. Surely this is more about KNOWING YOUR GAME, as in if you're going to run into trouble?? But much more importantly, is knowing your game COUPLED WITH COURSE MANAGEMENT!!! 3 wood for a tight fairway IF BEING AN AMATEUR, you swing is inconsistent. And yes as your video ends, yes 3 wood off the first tee, if I'm under pressure. Awesome thought provoking video. Jonathan
Conditions vary so much it's almost irrelevant to deal with them unless you have a repertoire to take out there - I want to find my patterns *first* then apply them to the conditions. I want to create my palette of shots then apply it to conditions to see if it works. Don't you want to know what your knock down shots carry in dead air before trying them into wind?
I am the opposite of dan the man. way more accurate with 3 wood, and almost as long. 3 wood just feels more comfortable to me. But I just purchased a Titleist T4 driver. Love the smaller head!
You've brought up the 'size of the face' discussion again. With all the adjustability and loft options of drivers, why not put two drivers in the bag 8.5 and 14.5 degree (given this fits you)? Wouldn't this fill that 'next club down from driver' gap better than 3 wood? Thoughts?
If the issue is dispersion with the 3 wood, can the new tech (lie or shaft) address the miss? Good thoughts though with regard to confidence in driver vs 3 wood swing.
Do you think the 3 wood and what it gives to a golfer, is becoming obsolete. Hybrids & utility iron for many professionals & amateur golfers can do the job with more consistently. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this subject. Really interesting video, thanks for your efforts.
I am more comfortable hitting my 3 wood then driver lately. My 3wood goes straight 260+ and lately my driver is coming up short and I cant figure out why my swing speed with it is down. I wish they made a 3wood size driver in 9* or 9.5* I would love one.
I am the complete opposite, driver dispersion is awful but 3 wood is much straighter. But, I don’t hold back with the 3 wood which ties in with the Buzza test.
I see this problem often with my playing partners. They opt for more loft off the tee for "more accuracy" but end up trying to steer it rather than making a committed swing. With that said there is SOME merit to it, my off the planet 3 wood is not nearly as bad as my off the planet driver.
Dan will be testing that this afternoon. No he wont, he'll be pushing you and Matt out the door and doing it 30 seconds after you leave. Might he be better with one of the higher lofted Mini Drivers ?
Mark Question that’s not a question that makes a second question that is a question. . What about d plane and the extra help of the extra loft why do they not make 460 cc clubs in a 15-18 degree club.
I'm a Driver off the tee type, unless, and only unless it would go through the green... I'm more accurate with Driver.. the times when I've taken 5 wood off the tee to keep it straight I leak it right.. I suspect because I'm slowing it down and getting the timing wrong..
Dan ! Whats your driver degree ? What’s your 3 wood degree ? I’m thinking of buying a 3 wood and knocking it down to 13.5 would that be too low ? It would be a fairway finder to chew through the wind , I’d have a 9 degree driver and 18 5 wood also
Further to my previous point... all the discussion with Dan at 5:50 is just NOT RELEVANT to mid- or high- handicappers. We just WOULD NOT put a ball on the grass ( not teed-up) and hit it to IMPROVE accuracy! This is a video for people who add on shots at the end of a round, rather than subtract them.
dose same apply into strong winds too. i can knuckleball my 5 wood into wind better than driver for distance and accuracy or is this just me doing something wrong
I generally only use the 3 wood off the tee on downwind tees.... gives me accuracy and as I know the distance isn’t an issue.
Like it.
Brilliant, just wanted to say thanks!!! Took my driver swing back to basics yesterday, this series has saved my game!!!!! Hit more fairways than I have in a very long time. Thanks again 👍🏌️♂️👍🏌️♂️👍🏌️♂️

“I’m sure you’ll be doing it this afternoon”. Gold MC! Look forward to the video tomorrow Dan!! 😂😂😂
Great video again bruh, most people would go 3 wood for safety when it's not true. Put this with buzza's stuff and we all basically need to practice smashing driver!!
Really good advice and analysis, Mark. Hit it hard, Dan!
Great video. The talk with the driver is so much hitting max distance that I never considered hitting it various distances. Thanks!
TM Mini Driver - great from light rough as well.
This is amazing to me because I am completely opposite of Dan. I hit my 3 wood so much more straighter and less emotional then my driver. When I pull my 3 wood it’s not safety it’s comfort. I'm with Dan on that one. Have always liked the 5 wood v 3 wood. I know i can hit my 3 but not a fan... well done boys.

Played today and him my 3 wood very well. When I play I always feel more confident with my 3 wood and my dispersion is definitely less with 3 wood.

Driver off the tee unless i need to draw it then ill take the 3 wood.
Loving the banter!

I go to hybrid for safety now.. since watching your videos .. working well at moment.. great vid guys xx
Great video. Answered some of my questions thank you!
I wanna see a follow-up on this with Dan trying to rip the 3 wood!
I'm struggling at the moment! Keeping up with your output! It's such good info and advice! Keep it coming Bruhs! Thank You!

8.03 coaches face watching that tee nearly go in his lunch 😂

We use 3 wood from the ground so that wouldn’t work but if you only play them from the tee it could work.
3 wood for safety but with full power. I feel shorter shaft gives me better control my swing.
If the issue is dispersion with the 3 wood, can the new tech (lie or shaft) address the miss? Good thoughts though with regard to confidence in driver vs 3 wood swing.

His driver has the weight back, but the smaller fairway has a forward weight. I think that could be the reason the face control differs so much
I am more comfortable hitting my 3 wood then driver lately. My 3wood goes straight 260+ and lately my driver is coming up short and I cant figure out why my swing speed with it is down. I wish they made a 3wood size driver in 9* or 9.5* I would love one.
Exactly the dilemma that made me have the fitting with dan. I however feel my results would be different. I "think" my 3 wood is straighter.
Love your videos mark!
Should be testing his 5 wood also and possibly drop the 3 wood out the bag for an extra wedge that he had taken out. If the numbers work.
Can we see Dan testing the T100 against his CB’s please?
Took the 3W out of the bag because it wasn’t more accurate than the driver and I hit the 5W off the deck better.
3 wood is much straighter for me and distance is about the same. I need some coaching on my driver.
Dan will be testing that this afternoon. No he wont, he'll be pushing you and Matt out the door and doing it 30 seconds after you leave. Might he be better with one of the higher lofted Mini Drivers ?
Never holding back on either, 3W is more accurate for me but not by a large margin - the bad bad miss is just more forgiving
Very interesting thank you
Mark Question that’s not a question that makes a second question that is a question. . What about d plane and the extra help of the extra loft why do they not make 460 cc clubs in a 15-18 degree club.
I prefer my driver over my 3 wood. My 3 wood is misbehaving so bad. 9 out of 10 shots on my 3 wood are terrible hooks. It’s really demoralizing.
Are the club manufacturers allowed to make 3 woods with the same size heads as drivers? Is that the future?
LOL... Test you should be doing... which I'm sure you'll do at noon...
Awww man... Classic!!!
It would be a fairway finder to chew through the wind , I’d have a 9 degree driver and 18 5 wood also
Well, I've got a 9 degree driver, 14,5 degree 3 wood and a 19 hybrid so I reckon you'll be just fine
patrik streng
I think so too !
7:55 haha Dan's tee nearly went in your tuna pasta Coach
dose same apply into strong winds too. i can knuckleball my 5 wood into wind better than driver for distance and accuracy or is this just me doing something wrong
Play to your strengths on that particular day, right going too watch the video that’s only my opinion.
Interesting 🤔. Beautiful stuff👍
Just wondering, is that Dan lifting the weights on the poster behind the hitting mat.
Yes it is 👍🏻
I always hit driver don’t carry a 3 wood anymore my 5 wood is for fairway shots only.
I feel like my 4 wood is more accurate than may driver, but I'm going to check this next time on the course
i ditched my 3 wood for a 17 degree Hybrid, miles easier to hit straight and goes far enough at my level
hahahaha thats so good, but this totally makes sense great vid
3 wood for safety all day for tight fairways
