As a 5 handicapper that has recently started hitting a lot of tops and veryyy thin shots, this video has come at a great time. I have been really struggling to control low point, and it was beginning to bug me. Cheers guys!
Mark. Toppings not a problem but loved your drill for getting 'through' the ball. Sometimes I stay back on my back foot and I think your drill will be great for that. Thanks.
The ball forward in the stance drill is something I'm sure you showed a few years back, best drill I've ever seen for resetting your strike. I always it a least 5 shots at the start of any range session like that.
This new type of content you guys are putting out is really REALLY great. Loving the way you are reframing the the advice to really show and talk from different perspectives on what is going on and why we should look at things differently. It’s in depth enough to get you thinking yet it gets straight to the point in an easy and relaxed way. Really great stuff! Thanks again muppets! :o)
Dan just narrated my last few range sessions with new irons. Struggling with contact and most good strikes blocking right. I closed the face just to confirm what I was doing but eventually tried a more out-to-in feeling to get closer to a neutral path. I suspect chicken wing is happening subconsciously. So many factors man! Glad to have your input as always.
This is my first fault I need to resolve. I can top a 58 degree wedge all the way up through every club. I was using "Stay Down" as my swing thought, but watching another video of yours, that may just make it worse. i do have chicken wing, but with both elbows, not just my left arm (I'm right handed). Checking my grip, which is somewhat strong, so I'll start there. Some useful tips here that I will practice. I will also make a few videos in slow mo of my swing so I can see what I am actually doing. I find it amazing that you all say, that people make modifications during the swing to try and save a shot. I always attributed that to good players. I suppose the bad players (me) don't know we are doing what we are doing until we can actually see it.
I had started doing what Dan is saying about 2 months ago, however only closing face on my irons about 5 degrees. It has been money for me as far as getting rid of my fade, dead straight flight now. Now for the first time in 40 plus years I’m just concentrating on wind and distance.
I top my irons a lot I'm definitely going to try the drill where I move the ball further up in my stance. My buddy suggested I do that in the last round I played and hit for me great iron shots I just didnt do it that dramatically so next time I practice I'll give that a try. Thank you for this video this has been my curse the whole time I've been playing
When I first started playing, I had a bit of a topping issue. A simple fix that worked for me, was simply keep your chin up. It did the trick for me at least. If a top does creep in, I can usually correct it with my chin.
I have been using a set of muscle backs and striking the ball really well. I’ve just bought myself a set of blades 🤦🏼♂️ and am now thinning the ball a little more. Not sure how much this is a reaction to the club but I’ll give these drills a go and see if I can change my window of opportunity! 💪🏻⛳️🏌🏻♂️😁
I generally strike the ball pretty well, had a topped tee shot on Sunday and I'm going to go down the route of I hope it was just a one off! If it comes back I'll have to try Lockey's drill
Great tips boys, definitely going to try the one putting the ball forward in my stance. My bad shot with the driver is hitting it high in the face or high toe and skying the ball (as the sky marks on my poor driver head prove) could you do a tip video on that please 👍
As a fanboy - like I am - 1. I can’t say why but the content gets better and better. Well well done. It’s such a win win win situation that you guys have different drills, experiences and ways to work with students. It’s just a huge huge big plus to hear all 3 of yours. And 2. I miss course vlogs (even I’ve seen that with buzman. Was just a chick filler i guess.
Have tried dans fix in the past to cure chicken wing shanks!!!.. But made chick wing more.. Like the ball forward drill. I don't top but do catch it heavy.. Great vid guys xx
Top golf channel on the internet. Serious lessons that have impact on us weekend golfers, very helpful equipment reviews, along with the muppets on the course vlogs! Sorry Matt, however seriously giving a lot of thought to starting the Crossfield Army here in the States! #Rinkyman🤓
An interesting video for me would be how a golfer's physical 'make-up' translates into any patterns of misses (if at all). Tall/short, thin, large, etc.. I'm a bit barrel-chested (ya, ya I know) and often blame by inconsistent striking on having to simply move more mass during the downswing or making unique compensations related to the physical aspects I'm bringing to the table. I realize the PR around that would be full of land-mines to avoid. But it's a real world question...
Bottom-Out-Early tops with fairway woods and hybrids when I let myself get distracted and forget where the low point of my swing is with that club and don't set up properly.
Suggestion for a fix vlog. Hitting fairway woods, I struggle with anything stronger lofted than a 5 wood, to get them airborne at a proper height. Maybe this is related a bit to topping,?
I have a problem with adding dynamic loft ( short iron are worse ) and I’m down to 11... but would like more control .. do you have a vid covering this
I play off 13 rarely top a ball off that handicap of course but I frequently top a 3 wood makes me not want to hit it so can't reach par 5s in two very often
I had this started happening on drives the more I worked on shallowing my downswing and coming more from the inside. I raised the ball height and.that solved it Hope that helps someone
I top a ball beneath my feet. Just can't seem to work out an address position that will help get the club to the ball. I can also bottom out early from a lie that makes me feel like I have to get steeper to get the club on the ball...in a divot, thick grass. That usually results in a fat shot, but it's the same problem. I have a pretty shallow attack angle (-3) which would mean I'm interacting with the ground/grass behind the ball pretty early, so stuff behind the ball really messes with my head--without much room for error.
I've recently started topping a few shots, the ball is leaving a trench off the tee, I have put it down to being to aggressive with my swing is that a possibility?
02:27 I do that when I'm tired and not focused. The next time I top it I plan to hit the ball after it flies straight up and pretend it was some kind of trick shot. LOL
I top shots, but I also chunk shots. I hit slices, hooks, thin, fat, off the heel, off the toe...etc. I don't have a repeating swing so it's hard to use a tip if I dont have any consistency.
Most common cause of tops that I see is people sliding their hips away from target during their takeaway. This moves their low point behind the ball which leads to the top on the way up. Just tell them to stop sliding and turn over the ball.
The thing about these mistakes is that people aren't practising correctly. All I ever see at my range are people hitting full shots... Full drives... Full wedges. I never see them hitting different shots. I always play a different shot every ball... Unless I mess a shot up then i will hit that shot again to get it right. But I will hit a draw then maybe a fade or a low ball flight or high etc etc. Because I have never hit the same shot twice in a row on a golf course (unless I am reloading for a lost ball)
Try focusing your eyes on the front of the ball instead of the back, Chances are your swing is too shallow, you need to hit slightly down on a 3 wood from the deck.
10:50 I'm not sure i like that.. I'd rather learn the proper way to develop muscle memory painfully and slowly even if it takes 100 shots. In hockey, never practice hitting goal posts, cause in the game your shot inherently hits the post cause your used to it.
As a 5 handicapper that has recently started hitting a lot of tops and veryyy thin shots, this video has come at a great time. I have been really struggling to control low point, and it was beginning to bug me. Cheers guys!
I can’t emphasize enough how much my game has improved watching your videos.. keep up the great work Mark!!
Mark. Toppings not a problem but loved your drill for getting 'through' the ball. Sometimes I stay back on my back foot and I think your drill will be great for that. Thanks.
Best coach on the net. I'd love a lesson in person if you still offer that!
The moving of the ball 3 inch forward sorted my topping out ⛳️
Another egggggggsellllllllent lesson! All these tips help. Thanks guys very much, don't ever stop this stuff!!!

You have all out done yourselves with this video guys. Bloody brilliant
This recent set of vids is awesome. Simple tips, straight to the point.
Dan just narrated my last few range sessions with new irons. Struggling with contact and most good strikes blocking right. I closed the face just to confirm what I was doing but eventually tried a more out-to-in feeling to get closer to a neutral path.

For me, looking at the ground on the target side of the ball, instead of the back of the ball, has helped me dramatically reduce fats and tops.....

Brilliant lesson! Shake it up, get the student thinking. Can't wait to practice this
I have used moving the ball forward before and it really works. Thanks for reminding me of a great drill.
Loved the drill putting the ball right outside the left foot, definitely working with that on the next practice session 👍🏻👍🏻
Love these little drills!!! Something for everybody. Another gem here!!!
Fairway Woods is mine! So frustrating hit a beauty of a drive then top a fairway wood. Does the same apply for this?
Great instruction as usual 👍
I had started doing what Dan is saying about 2 months ago, however only closing face on my irons about 5 degrees. It has been money for me as far as getting rid of my fade, dead straight flight now. Now for the first time in 40 plus years I’m just concentrating on wind and distance.
Furthermore: Dan`s drill, that you have also used since years, is sooo helpful for a lot of `misbehaviors`!!!!
Moving the ball forward is a great drill and it really works well as I’ve used it before.
Clay Ballard's "good contact zone concept" helped me tremendously
I top my irons a lot I'm definitely going to try the drill where I move the ball further up in my stance. very nice drills for topping and duffing the ball. Thanks a lot.

Marks is the best drill

the professor loki nailed it, i like the idea of different tee height
Great vid. The only one you missed was starting to stand up in the swing. I know because occasionally I am guilty.
Love this. Low point control is so hard!
I struggle with bottoming out early. I’m definitely going to try Mark’s drill.
Absolutely loved this video! Thank you
Great series of videos

I topped when I first started playing, I was just terrified of digging the club head into the ground! Not sure what I was doing exactly, I was 9!

Hit the occasional top (often when I’m trying to send it) will certainly think about these drills next time I’m on the range
Great help. Thank you
Have tried dans fix in the past to cure chicken wing shanks!!!.. But made chick wing more.. Like the ball forward drill. I don't top but do catch it heavy.. Great vid guys xx
I top the ball from early extension...top and heel the ball.
On a roll Mark, another great vid

Awesome nuggets of wisdom!
I struggle with everything as a beginner... topping is defo one of them!

Any tips on fixing the other type of topping, the type where you’re bottoming out too late?
I top the ball. Glad to know I gotta toss everything =P. I'll give some of these a go, especially the ball forward.
I play off 13 rarely top a ball off that handicap of course but I frequently top a 3 wood makes me not want to hit it so can't reach par 5s in two very often
Top Tips. That tickled me 😂
Good tips

your a skillfull boy marky x

This is the biggest struggle in my game! I too my driver all the time
I don't struggle at all topping a ball,,, I pretty much do it every time!! Not a struggle at all!!
Used to be a topper odd one now when really going for it im more a duffer at the mo😢👍
I've recently started topping a few shots, the ball is leaving a trench off the tee, I have put it down to being to aggressive with my swing is that a possibility?

Guess I am one that tops hitting up given i am 50/50 tops and chunks. But I do love a good spicey chicken wing with a nice IPA.
How can you self diagnose wether you’ve topped it on the way down or way up?
You might need video help.
what is that song in the beginning?

I definitely Topper Mcgrew more than Frederick von Fattenberg...good fixes Lefty Parfield!!👍👍👍🔔

Mark how are those T100’s ?
Lovely
Mark Crossfield
I’m considering moving on from the 718 CB’s so would love to see a video on Dan comparing them! 😉
My trouble is topping 3 wood shots from good or bad lie. Help!
Try focusing your eyes on the front of the ball instead of the back, Chances are your swing is too shallow, you need to hit slightly down on a 3 wood from the deck.
Top fairway woods
Wider camera angle please!
2:46 hahah cereal on my laptop now
Í suffer from topping my drives, got any cure for that :(
Halldor Oddsson Try teeing the ball up higher and gradually start bringing it back down.
Hybrids mostly and ball above my feet side hill lies.
I only top my 3 wood and only off the tee. Sucks when you take that club for safety and especially when it's over a pond. Such a waste
I simply focus about an inch in front of the ball
LOL this is funny
My hips slide through impact and result in too much upper body tilt away from target. The ball forward drill only makes me do it more
Can u put the camera on the actual ball please! Lol half the shots you hit we didn't even see impact!
I top all the time
I might get one top out of 3 rounds but it's still there, hiding in the dark corner of the room waiting.
10:50 I'm not sure i like that.. I'd rather learn the proper way to develop muscle memory painfully and slowly even if it takes 100 shots. In hockey, never practice hitting goal posts, cause in the game your shot inherently hits the post cause your used to it.
I was told, I am swinging too hard
Mmmm chicken wings 😂
I don’t know any golfers that top 18 tee shots...
I could show you the corpses of hundreds of earthworms at my local course that would beg to differ.
I believe Dans advice less because of his hat.
Lets talk hooks, everything about not going right. The rest of us have a miss to bruh
I more hit toe 90% or fat 50%
I'm more of a fatter than a topper lol
