I like using e.g. BBCSO on it's own because I love the room tone and everything simply sits nice together. Otherwise, I combine anywhere and everything ;)

Sounds fine. I mix them up something adjusting, tweaking ECT thanks for confirming my feelings about it.

Yep! Inputting CC information into your performances is way more important imo than sticking with one developer.

Hi Christopher, thanks again for this new video. You explained about mixing different samples of different instruments... But what do you think about mixing different samples of the same instrument ? For example, for the same piece, can you mix multiple samples of violins 1 ? Thanks ! PS : I didn't find the video about your plugins use (compressor, EQ...)...

His Florent, I do it all the time! As long as you like how they sound together, there’s no rules. Plugins video on mixing coming up.

What about mixing libaries with same sound such as 2 for the violins? or 2 different flute librarys blended together? How would one create uniformity between them? thanks

vortex It actually works in a very similar way. If you match the timbers and spaces of both instruments close enough, you can create a convincing result.

Isn't there also the benefit of having the same delay?

Nice video Chris! This is always an interesting topic, and I know many people prefer to stick with one developer for orchestral instruments (Berlin Series Orchestra, or Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra, or BBCSO). Personally I don't think it's that much of an issue mixing libraries, there's reverbs to help put them in the same room, and you can hardly tell the difference. Layering different libraries together is a little different, strings are great to layer to fill in the weak gaps that one library might have (e.g. layering Cinematic Studio Strings with Spitfire Chamber Strings for a more detailed, intimate sound). But woodwinds and brass on the other hand are usually best not layered as the tone and performances are usually very different, and there can be phasing issues too.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Pawel. Indeed, layering the same section (strings from several developers) can help to enhance its overall sound! When it comes to combining different sections from different developers, however, you can more easily run into problems. But as we saw in this video, it's not a big deal at all if you choose the correct mic/reverb settings.

@@ChristopherSiu Honestly I couldn't even tell that your example was from different developers. One big plus however for sticking with the same developer is for ease of use, such as being able to easily copy midi data between Cinematic Studio Products and not worrying about key switches etc

Hi, Christopher I love your Video series about orchestral Composing and production . Would you mind showing us, how you use reverb to creat depth ( Tiefenstafflung, Eraly Reflection). A Tutorial how to route ( and setting up reverbs etc) would also be great would also be great. There are so many concepts in terms of routing and reverbs and I am confused right now.

Hi Chas, thank you! I have a video on reverb coming up next week that I think you’ll find helpful. Reverb is one of those tools that I don’t get too complicated about, so as long as it sounds good to me and adds some good depth, I leave it as is. Coming up!
