Layout a chord progression first, as a beginner it's probably best to stick with simple chords, like triads, diminished, or 7ths, rather than the more complex ones, 9ths, sus2, sus4, 11ths, diminished 7ths, augmented 7ths. Then you can either do bass or melody first, but melody is usually better to create first. Making a melody is pretty much just experimenting, but as a beginner you can just use the notes from the chords like in the video, (but that can get old fast).

Good video showing the levels of experience tiers. Although it can be argued that none of the samples are garbage, not even the "noob" one. It just takes the right application of it to make it golden. Honestly with each progression from noob to god you made, things just kept changing so drastically, each level was saying a different emotion altogether. Like you don't know what you want to go for. The noob one was somber and calm, the pro one was like a modern hype, cowboy saloon and God one was like some anime emotional bit. They didn't even relate the same stories musically. While music theory does separate noobs from pros alone, just from an understanding level. Ear training is another story that noobs with no theory knowledge can be naturally better at than a trained musician writing complex pieces that just have zero true emotion to it or sense of originality. It really boils down to how good you are at creating a certain emotion with a certain sound. Whether you're writing a full story or just one page of a singular raw emotion, so to say. Know what you're trying to make first on an emotional sense before letting your ear pick out what it thinks will sound cool with what. You just won't be creative if your not in the emotional proper space in the first place and your brain is doing the work instead.

I think that a good melody doesn't need to be complex but it needs to be long. Long melodies keep you interested because it's not a boring repetitive loop playing over and over again.

A lot of the time i make progressions by layering a bunch of melodies, and if i do it in a controlled enough way thats how i can form the chord progressions. Theres definitely a lot more ways to make progressions than just these methods, dont be afraid to experiment
The number one thing when writing or arranging parts like this to remember is "can this instrument actually play this". For example, if you have more than 10 notes going on with a piano, or if they are spanning more than 2-3 octaves, it won't sound real because its literally impossible to play that on the actual instrument. If the god level was split up between multiple instruments it might sound ok, but having it just be a piano is why it sounds so awkward.
For the god level chords, the first and 2nd bars were 👌👌, but after that I think too much was going on 😢 Also I love the baseline in the god level chords
honestly, i think just the 3rd bar of god level was weird. like the 4th bar seems to lead pretty good into the 1st bar but obviously it's very subjective
@@grantcanty7294 it is supposed to feel a bit "strange", to spice things up. I believe it's taking the melody into the relative minor scale or something like that. The leading tone is also syncopated, meaning that, in theory, that second note should've been shorter and the third one should've been longer, but they swapped their duration, giving it more energy.

Normally if you're using 7 chords man you want to take advantage of that leading tone which is the 7 note. You can't just slap chords onto it. It has to harmonize, thinking of the root and what mode you want your phrase to be in. Also the chords in the beginning was just kind of too short. The counter melody could've filled that in a little bit more. However mixed in with the electronic synths it sounded slightly better. I would've however, used different sounding synths though because a part doesn't always sound good on one instrument but can sound good on another. It also may feel a bit unnatural because keep in mind about phrasing, space, and transition runs. Needs to flow, and float better. learning a woodwind instrument or how to compose for one can normally help with that. It's a little too short for god level. But that was a nice try with god level. I'd just thought I'd clear that up because complex melodies can sound great and I can see this working if it had more time spent on it.
Tl;dr Music theory is a descriptive practice, not a prescriptive one. True, for western functional harmony, and maybe just as so for this specific video's style of music. The music theory that is widely known and taught in music schools is for common practice period music -- Even just staying in English culture there is different theories/analysis/systems for the idea of music, some Jazz, rock, blues, metal; to post-tonal theory with schenkerian analysis, transformational theory, set theory (music), microtonality, xenharmony, to name a few if you would like to research more into it. And that's not even touching other cultures of Mongolian, Middle Eastern, Bulgarian, Indian, to which I know nothing about myself. Just remember that music is just… art. You can really do whatever you want, i.e. if it sounds good then it sounds good. Quote from Harry Partch (?): Music, "good" or not "good," has only two ingredients that might be called God-given: the capacity of a body to vibrate and produce sound and the mechanism of the human ear that registers it. These two ingredients can be studied and analyzed, but they cannot be changed; they are the comparative constants. I recommend to go to Ian Ring's website and you'll be able to find all 3000+ scales which is every single note combination. Music theory is just there to help you with what sounds you want

Honestly the first melody isn't noobish. It's just simple, and sometimes it's important to keep melodies simple. And for the god mode, I think you were trying too hard.
Whilst this is a useful instructive video for teaching complete beginners how to make their melodies more interesting, the level demonstrated at 'God level' is still very simplistic. If you're basing writing melody around the idea that the initial melodic phrase will only be one bar and that you're going to just do subsequent one bar variations of that initial phrase for each subsequent bar over four bars without further exploring how to develop compelling melodic ideas in the first place your music will be, to be completely blunt, pretty generic sounding. Whilst this is could be a useful starting point for complete beginners to get started I don't know how good it is to teach beginners the idea that writing good melodies is as rigid and formulaic as this when it's not. It actually can be much more creative, fun and rewarding.
Honestly Chop, I was pretty fair to this video in my original post. Even as a starting point for a beginner this still gets beginners off to a bad start because instead of teaching them this, you could instead teach them some very basic ideas about rhythm and cadence and that would put them in a far better position to write enjoyable and unique music from the very beginning. On the contrary, this video doesn't really show a beginner how to compose music as such, it just shows them how to compose the same one song over and over again in a way that has already been done a million times before. Just because someone's a beginner, that's no reason for why they should be seeking to write identikit and uninteresting music from the beginning. Generally, you don't learn how to write enjoyable and unique music by learning how to write cookie cutter music first, you learn how to write enjoyable and unique music by learning about it bit by bit and composing as you go along.
@@riffmason I'm not particularly advanced but I have made a small handful of good tracks, have like 2 years of production experience and 6 of DJing. It gave me a different perspective on melody writing, because that pro one sounds pretty darn good while still just being a one-bar melody with some variation attached to it. I usually find that I go too complex a lot of the time, it can definitely be good to keep it simple and formulaic, especially if you want to go for something catchy.

Really my problem isn't simplicity but the issue of being formulaic which I did then discuss. As good as you might think the pro example sounds (which I don't being completely honest), it is a problem for producers to make music this formulaic because the issue they will then have is that their music just isn't going to stand out and is going to sound boring and generic. If a producer makes a song so formulaic that it sounds exactly like other songs that have been done by other producers over and over again already, then why even bother listening to that producer when I could just listen to plenty of other producers instead?

if you think of it as a piano piece the GOD level works really well. its enjoyable imo but for edm pro is def best (i still really enjoyed God level finished)
maybe the god version played on a piano with more velocity sensitivity could work though? here everything is kinda hit with the same strength so maybe it doesn't do it justice for me on the piano only version

How complicated your melodies are has NOTHING to do with how good you are as a producer. The greatest beats of all time Mostly use simple chord progressions and like 3 sounds.
Yep, I think some people think it's impressive, but once you know even the most basic music theory it's not that hard to slap a bunch of notes onto it in the scale
One thing to always remember when creating music is, is there enough room for the artist to be creative over the top of it? Overly complicated tunes can actually counter the artists skills.

I recommend to go to Ian Ring's website and you'll be able to find all 3000+ scales which is every single note combination. Music theory is just there to help you with what sounds you want

Whilst this is a useful instructive video for teaching complete beginners how to make their melodies more interesting, the level demonstrated at 'God level' is still very simplistic. If you're basing writing melody around the idea that the initial melodic phrase will only be one bar and that you're going to just do subsequent one bar variations of that initial phrase for each subsequent bar over four bars without further exploring how to develop compelling melodic ideas in the first place your music will be, to be completely blunt, pretty generic sounding. Whilst this is could be a useful starting point for complete beginners to get started I don't know how good it is to teach beginners the idea that writing good melodies is as rigid and formulaic as this when it's not. It actually can be much more creative, fun and rewarding.
Honestly Chop, I was pretty fair to this video in my original post. Even as a starting point for a beginner this still gets beginners off to a bad start because instead of teaching them this, you could instead teach them some very basic ideas about rhythm and cadence and that would put them in a far better position to write enjoyable and unique music from the very beginning.
On the contrary, this video doesn't really show a beginner how to compose music as such, it just shows them how to compose the same one song over and over again in a way that has already been done a million times before. Just because someone's a beginner, that's no reason for why they should be seeking to write identikit and uninteresting music from the beginning. Generally, you don't learn how to write enjoyable and unique music by learning how to write cookie cutter music first, you learn how to write enjoyable and unique music by learning about it bit by bit and composing as you go along.
@@riffmason I'm not particularly advanced but I have made a small handful of good tracks, have like 2 years of production experience and 6 of DJing. It gave me a different perspective on melody writing, because that pro one sounds pretty darn good while still just being a one-bar melody with some variation attached to it. I usually find that I go too complex a lot of the time, it can definitely be good to keep it simple and formulaic, especially if you want to go for something catchy.
@@LillyAnneMeadows Hi, I only took issue with simplicity in the context that this video was advertising the composition in the video as being 'God level' composition as if it was somehow expert composition writing which I thought was misleading. Really my problem isn't simplicity but the issue of being formulaic which I did then discuss. As good as you might think the pro example sounds (which I don't being completely honest), it is a problem for producers to make music this formulaic because the issue they will then have is that their music just isn't going to stand out and is going to sound boring and generic. If a producer makes a song so formulaic that it sounds exactly like other songs that have been done by other producers over and over again already, then why even bother listening to that producer when I could just listen to plenty of other producers instead?
Like you're not wrong, but dude haha. Like it is complex, depending on view amongst other things. Taking the base of everything away, listening to the overall sound link like strings with subtle hooks. Like the sound is complex regardless of how 'generic' it is.

I never got the rigid and formulaic feeling because creativity isn't meant to be constricted with those types of things, but its a very good generalized base to start from. You have seen this too much from a literal and specific view point. Like you expected to see more complexity of a type that you know, rather than in a way you might not think, your too literal and wrong in many ways as you are right. He was being general and you took it literally, like dude. You're quite tunnel visioned thought wise, I do hope you come to work through that - truly.

I agree with those that say the pro one sounds better than the god one. I noticed there was some dissonance in some of those chords used, though I'm sure the mistakes were unintentional.

How complicated your melodies are has NOTHING to do with how good you are as a producer. The greatest beats of all time Mostly use simple chord progressions and like 3 sounds.
Yep, I think some people think it's impressive, but once you know even the most basic music theory it's not that hard to slap a bunch of notes onto it in the scale

One thing to always remember when creating music is, is there enough room for the artist to be creative over the top of it? Overly complicated tunes can actually counter the artists skills.
