    This sure does bring back some good and bad memory's. I worked in a trailer shop for CKC truck lines from 1971 to 77. We worked on everything from lights to brakes. I wish I had a dollar for every tire I broke down. The bud wheels, like the one your doing wasn't to bad, the ones I dreaded doing were the two piece split rims. I saw one guy get the hell knocked out of him because he didn't place the tire inside the steel cage. If you had enough air pressure in the tire and one of those rings came off it could rip your arm or head right off. This particular type of wheel was never a problem while airing up. That was a great demonstration buddy and thanks for the memory's.

    Excellent demonstration! Thank you Q! Quick question though, do you need a bead seating tank just in case rolling the tire doesn't set the bead?

    • @everythingabove
      @everythingabove ปีที่แล้ว

      Tire guy here, rolling like what he’s doing only really works if you have a brand new (otherwise called a virgin tire) on an aluminum rim like what he has, and you might be able to get virgin tires to self bead on a new painted steel rim/ repainted steel rim and possibly on a used rim depending on how rusted it is. Otherwise with a recapped tire or a used tire you will need a bead seater (otherwise called a blaster). In this video he has the rim mounting face towards him when the bead seats, when you have a wheel off the axle this is usually the side you blast but if you try to blast the bead a couple of times and it doesn’t seat, try blasting the side of the tire with the mounting face away from you and the tire should seat (this is more common to do in Asian made tires). It is also worth mentioning when you put the air chuck on the valve steam before you blast to listen to see how much air is flowing through the steam as some valve steams require the valve core in them to let air flow into the tire. This can also affect bead seating because if there isn’t enough flow going into the tire when you try to seat the bead the bead just won’t seat either.

    Always use a tire cage when airing up used/recap tires. And never air up a tire to full capacity without a valve core in the stem, just to about 40 psi to seat the bead. I've been doing tires for 15 years. I've seen plenty of tires blow up and you can get mangled even when they are in a tire cage. No job is worth your life.

    You should air up with wheel on 5 gal bucket

    Do you balance truck tires?

    • @mikejohnston7937
      @mikejohnston7937 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Typically only the steer tires. Drive and trailer tires dont usually need it

      Some tires are pre balanced, they will have a red dot on the side and you align that dot with the valve stem before mounting

    Definitely don't keep your hand on the tyre and stand 2 mtrs away. That's the Ryder law.. 130 fronts 100 rear

      Yes, I agree a tire cage is safer. If you start to hear popping and tearing remove air right away before a failure happens

    Suggestion-Better to use something like a anti-fatigue foam mat instead of cardboard, could have sharp staples which could cause a small air leak.

      No one uses split rims anymore for that reason. Most shops won’t change tires on them at all.

    The one thing he didn’t do is put a rag on the bar so he wouldn’t scratch the rim while final dismount of the tire!
