🚨STATEMENT 🚨 This video IS NOT a negative video. I have already seen too many incorrect comments claiming that I have bad intentions. Just like my Beijing Hutong video I want to show the real everyday life of the people who live in side streets of these megacities. These are the great people whose cultures, life-long work, and heritage, these cities have been built on and instead of showing the Bund of Shanghai, I want to show the real everyday people. The construction work on the Grandma's home in NOT negative and in the video, if you watch it, you will see that I am curious as to what is happening so instead of assuming, we actually ask a construction worker who informs us of their government-led project to renovate the exterior of these 100-year-old heritage houses to preserve the identity of the Long Tangs for years to come. I said I feel sorry for the grandma, but this doesn't mean I think that the work shouldn't happen. If MY grandma wanted work done on her house, like a new roof for example, even if she asked for it to be done and paid for it to be done, I would still feel sorry for her that her peaceful home had loud noises and construction men all over it - it's part of life but I will not be criticized for showing empathy to an elderly woman who's residence has become noisy. Again, that doesn't mean I somehow disagree with the construction. I love China and especially showing the everyday people of this country, that's what I'm passionate about. I wouldn't try my best to learn Mandarin and even some Shanghainese, just to go and make a negative video about that place - that would be stupid.

Hundred percent understand, as a local I have to say that beside those tourist areas, normal Shanghai people’s lives are just like the lives in nearby provinces like zhejiang and jiangsu
I think museum will also be a good place to watch out for.And I really feel a bit weird about “real China” the underdeveloped or old area is real China and the high tech/ modern area are also real China, China has so many aspects.
The point is that these are the people, culture and traditions on which all the modern elements of the city are built on. We should celebrate the real Shanghainese heritage
You are the most friendly person I have ever seen to China. You are very fair in reporting what you have seen and heard. Welcome to Taiwan, China one day
Highly recommend another city located at Bohai bay north of China which is the biggest coastline city of north and 2nd biggest city 100years ago had 9 different concessions which is unique of the whole of world. The street scenery is very close to Shanghai since foods and culture diverse. Finally it’s just take less than half hour by Bullet train from Beijing and is the fastest train line in China The city of Tianjin .Still Called Tientsin century before
If you are still in Shanghai, I suggest you go to Songjiang, which has the highest mountain and the largest university city in Shanghai. You can see college students from various provinces in China, and you can freely enter and exit these universities. And there is a beautiful European style town
One thing that stands out to what's so common in other similar places in most Western cities, throughout the exploration in the back alley of Shanghai, I did not see any drug dealers, hookers, beggars, etc harassing you for money....and all the narrow streets are relatively rubbish free, and no homeless people around either.
00:03:45 Actually, these so called original Shanghainese has not been here too long. They are all descendants of migrants from Jiangsu or Zhejiang province as Shanghai opened as a trade port after First Opium War.
The bird you saw saying Happy New Year is called Ba Ge 八哥 (Latin: Acridotheres cristatellus), which is a very smart type of bird can mimic different types of sound, just like parrot. 😄
6:01 "She's looking very concerned." You have a translator with you. Why did you not just *ask her* as opposed to making assumptions? She *_might_* be concerned but maybe for reasons that you are unaware of that might surprise you. This *_before_* stating anything on camera. Edit: I see at 9:10 from her own words that she could care less. A better question to ask would have been: "Exactly what do they 'renovate'? The wires? The materials, the structure? Roof? Windows? Walls? Foundation? Solar? These would be very insightful.
It looks like you stepped into the inner-city slums, which are called 棚户区. Those rundown houses are very cramped, and most units don't have a bathroom or kitchen. Typically, 3-4 people live in a 300 square foot space. the irony is that there are always some upscale apartments next to those neighborhoods, which cost millions of dollars.
In Shanghai, these older buildings generally lack independent kitchen and bathroom spaces. Typically, 3 to 4 families share one kitchen, creating significant fire hazards. Very few people in this old city area have independent bathrooms, and the vast majority of residents need to deposit their feces in containers at home and transport them to designated locations outside to dispose of them. If you are lucky enough that your house was included in the government's old city renovation plan, the government will buy your house at a price higher than the usual market rate (commonly known as demolition compensation). The government's prerequisite for successfully demolishing the old city area is to obtain the consent of the residents in two consecutive votes. In the first vote, more than 90% of the residents need to approve the government's demolition plan for it to pass. In the second vote, 85% of the residents must agree to the government's compensation plan (i.e., be satisfied with the amount of compensation) for it to pass. Only after both votes pass can the demolition be officially initiated. The compensation plan for each renovation site is publicly available and can be checked online. On average, each household can receive compensation of 4 to 5 million RMB (equivalent to 550,000 to 690,000 USD), with the amount depending on the size of your house. Residents can choose to accept the government's proposal to purchase houses specifically designated for demolition households in the suburbs of Shanghai (at a lower price than the market rate), or they can choose to purchase commercial housing themselves. However, whether such a situation can happen where you live entirely depends on urban planning and local government finances. In other words, if you're "unlucky," you might not be able to benefit from such policies for many years. Just like the elderly woman in the video who has lived there her whole life, their housing conditions might be better than the ones mentioned earlier, but not by much. Fortunately, if your place doesn't get to enjoy the aforementioned policies, the city government will still regularly allocate funds to repair public parts of your house, including corridors, exterior walls, and surrounding infrastructure, just like what's happening in the video. Now, this is my personal opinion. As a tourist, it is natural to want to see some of the city's history preserved, but only the original residents can truly understand the inconvenience of living in these old buildings. For the original residents, if your home undergoes a significant renovation project, it means you've missed out on a government-led demolition project (typically, when they want to improve their living conditions by selling their houses to buy others, they can only sell for 2-3 million RMB. This price is far lower than the compensation offered by the government). In other words, it means they won't receive a generous demolition compensation agreement for at least several years. This is why the elderly woman in the video doesn't seem particularly happy. For someone her age, she might not to see the next large-scale old city renovation project.
Now that you are in Shanghai, I highly recommend you to see Chinese musicals and dance dramas! It can be said that Shanghai has gathered many outstanding actors in the country, and has the most novel theater operation mode! To some extent, it represents cultural trends. The Huangpu district (which is very close to the Bund) has a number of very popular theaters. If you're interested, I can recommend you a few shows
I like you always try to speak local dialect. Even only few words will make you closer to the locals. Can‘t wait to see you in Guangdong and hear you speak Cantonese.
Hey Jack, when you see people saying you have bad intention, remember there are two types: 1: Some real Chinese mainland people do get very sensitive about these contents these days. We Chinese also know how some of the bad medias depicting us, and we have seen some of the foreigners intentionally filming and exaggerating some facts, this is why we got so sensitive sometimes. This is not a very big problem for you, I believe you two are good and kind people, your actions and time will comfort their sensitivity. 2: It can be seen that some bad guys pretending they are Chinese but making some really extreme comments, they want others to think some Chinese are "extreme", I think you should be extra careful about some strange comments that seems very extreme, they are not from the brain of any normal people, don't mind them. This is a really bad era for Internet, people just likes to fight with each other online, and there are too many groups of people having their own intentions, they don't mind to make the whole situation more chaotic, it do need bravery to make such videos. Hope every goes well with your whole journey!
Don't underestimate these old houses that look shabby. One set costs more than 10 million yuan, and some old houses are worth hundreds of millions of yuan. It's amazing, isn't it? If these houses were not valuable, the locals who drive Porsche Maybach would not live here.
The old house in Longtang is real Shanghai/China, the fancy modern new highrise apartment complex is also real Shanghai/China. If you meant "normal" by "real" then in fact the normal Chinese people majority are living in hundreds of Chinese cities with good infrastructure and in those modern apartment with a good living standards. It's most of the old who still stay in Longtang because they have spent their whole time there, they may own a modern apartment somewhere else, their children may live in one of these apartment, but it doesn't mean that they are the majority people with a normal living condition. You do see more old than young in Hutong and Longtang, right? However, China is huge, there are always huge population in different level. But we can see the change over the decades. In the past more people lived in Longtang or in rural area but now more people live in modern cities. This is the change brought by fast economy development, support from government, and hardwork of Chinese people, and this is the real life of China.
Haha, actually the staff in the resteraunt are not Shanghai local. They are probably from the north as you can tell from their accent. So when Jack tried to speak Shanghainese to them, their reactions were all like: ? In addition, the "traditional Shanghainese" drinks are not Shanghai original, either. The soybean milk (Vitasoyis) a Hongkong brand, and the "fanta"(Dayao) is an inner mongolia brand which is very popular in the northeast provinces.
Welcome to the city , people , food come from everywhere and that is what really city it is! If you like to see ‘ real local’ you have to go back your village, where everyone born and dead in same place !
@@hahahahahahahahahahahahaha64 Agree. Shanghai is an international metropolis where you can find people, cuisines, and cultures from all over the world. However, when we talk about Shanghai local cuisine, "Benbangcai" and "Xiaolongbao"are definitely considered to be characteristic of Shanghai. In the video, Jack and the guide asked the staff lady if the drink was very Shanghainese, and I believe he intended to know if it was a traditional local beverage of Shanghai. The lady however answered these two type of drink are very popular in Shanghai. So I don't think Jack has got the correct information about the drinks.

It was so funny to hear you speak Shanghainese :-). It's always fun to talk with Shanghainese aunties and uncles if one can speak the local language well.
Let me tell you the truth about "Have you eaten yet". At least in Beijing, since the beginning of the last century, people's standard of living was not high, and eating was the biggest thing, people would meet and greet each other and ask each other "Have you eaten yet", and if the other person looked embarrassed and did not answer positively, it meant that the other person had a hard time lately, and the person who was having a hard time would be entertained, and the person who greeted him would help the other person, such as sending some grain. If the person does not answer positively, it means that he or she has been living in a difficult situation. Of course, the situation of not being able to afford to eat did not exist several decades ago, but such a way of greeting has been retained. This kind of greeting behavior is regarded as the greatest goodwill. People who really care about you will care whether you have enough to eat or not, and if you are starving, then they will help you with some food to solve the problem of eating, or even help you fundamentally, such as helping you to find a better job, or other problems. You can think of the question "Have you eaten?" You can think of this question as "How have you been?" Of course, "Have you eaten?" is a much kinder and more tactful way of asking "How have you been?"
Lol this is absolutely wrong. "This kind of greeting behavior is regarded as the greatest goodwill. " It'll be only considered as a weird move if a foreigner greets a local stranger with "Have you eaten". AND " "Have you eaten?" is a much kinder and more tactful way of asking "How have you been?"" this is wrong too, 最近怎么样(how have you been?) can't be replaced by 吃了吗(have you eaten), this just doesn't make sense
If you want to explore what ordinary, common life looks like in China I would definitely recommend visiting Changsha and Chengdu which are famous for a lively ordinary life. But maybe you need to get used to eating spicy things first

It's only applicable to people you know for a long time and It's either lunch or dinner time and you are asking so that if they say they Didn't you can invite em to come to your house to have something delicious although people Don't usually say they didn’t eat except family and good friends.

I went to Shanghai last time, it was still winter, really, really cold, so welcome you all to come explore China.
Hi Jack, always like your nice video. The Vitasoy bottle drink you drink in the noodle restaurant in Shanghai is original from Hong Kong.
Open, safe, and welcome to everyone visiting. you can record what you want to and upload in TH-cam. nothing to hide.
Hello I'm from hunza wow amazing video's i have watched your all vdeo's till now waiting for the nexr ...
Jack you are getting better and better. You have a brain that works right so therefore your vlogs are fun to watch. (Original Pakistani fan who now wants to explore the world through your eyes!)
Thank you so much for continuing to watch our videos brother!
The old lady said four months, which means it will take four months to complete the free renovation of the entire old community, not that it has been repaired for four months. Your brother who can speak Chinese needs to improve his Chinese listening skills, haha
these old communities are just like mines in Shanghai. That old lady has same age of my mom. Life in old community is never boring. These interactions with neighbors are the main social activities or entertainment after retirement.
the grandma said the repairing work needs totally 4 months, not already started for 4 months
Correct.

Highly recommend another city located at Bohai bay north of China which is the biggest coastline city of north and 2nd biggest city 100years ago had 9 different concessions which is unique of the whole of world. The street scenery is very close to Shanghai since foods and culture diverse. Finally it’s just take less than half hour by Bullet train from Beijing and is the fastest train line in China
The city of Tianjin .Still Called Tientsin century before
If you are still in Shanghai, I suggest you go to Songjiang, which has the highest mountain and the largest university city in Shanghai.

Very clean alleyways, no trash.
00:03:45 Actually, these so called original Shanghainese has not been here too long. They are all descendants of migrants from Jiangsu or Zhejiang province as Shanghai opened as a trade port after First Opium War.

When was the video taken? Definitely not in July as the upload date. July in Shanghai is like in oven.
上海老城区就这样拥挤,但是非常干净整洁。这个视频非常真实反应了老上海人住宅真实情况。只是这些普通的住房价格意外惊喜
25:20 neither of the two is shanghainess. Soy bean milk from Hong Kong. That bloody sugar water in orange color is a very northern thing.
这些旧房子一旦出售,价格高达10万人民币每平方米。上海的房子非常贵。
Not sure if you read the history about Shanghai before you trip? Shang is called Paris in the east at the turn of the century.

Hey Jack, when you see people saying you have bad intention, remember there are two types:
1: Some real Chinese mainland people do get very sensitive about these contents these days.
Hi Jack, are you in Shanghai now? and do you want to experience the historical local culture?

Don't underestimate these old houses that look shabby. One set costs more than 10 million yuan, and some old houses are worth hundreds of millions of yuan. It's amazing, isn't it? If these houses were not valuable, the locals who drive Porsche Maybach would not live here.
非常有趣,去当地了解真实的生活情况,是去旅游景区体验不到的感受

Good video, the true life.
Every time Jack says where he is, take a shot.
Auntie said that the project will be completed in 4 months.
great job, talk to the chinese people, brings you best understanding of China.
This is the real ShangHai,thanks for the video!
