Hope you will enjoy this one. It was so much fun to do a little side quest in Alaska and venture into this unique place. Extra love to our host June! Let us know what you thought of this trip :)
Just finished it… this is great, you guys are great! Thanks you so much for teaching me all about different peoples lifestyles and cultures! It’s really interesting!
Nomi, from Nomadic Introvert channel, went to that very place in Alaska just this year. You should check out her channel. She videoed that abandoned set of buildings too, and the inside of the building where everyone lives..She also went to Norway recently. I think that she is on her way back from Canada now. Ty for sharing 👍
What I absolutely loved about this video is seeing you struggle to make some connections in the beginning. Might sound stupid, but in this way I felt more connected to you, seeing that it is not just me, who doesn´t find it easy to meet new people, but also experienced travelers and inventors of YesTheory have times like this ^^ What I missed in your last couple of videos is some No´s. Getting rejected and handle hundreds of No´s before getting a Yes was always an important part of your videos for me. Keep up the good spirits with love from Germany!
This is pretty similar to how we live in Yellowstone. Over winter, most of the staff live in two neighboring dormitory buildings and get locked in the park for 4 months with the only way out being over-snow vehicles. It'd be amazing if y'all did a video on what that's like! I've lived here for almost 4 years now.
Staffan never fails to put a smile on my face. The way he treats the elders shows so much about his character. He's the sunshine of the Yes team. Love your videos sm guys.
June was so hyper and ready to enjoy life I wish her many more years with us. You two really are showing off these older folks like family and I love it so much
I love how Thomas is one of the original members/creators of this channel and Yes Theory, but he still has moments of "what are we doing here?" and "my life is so random." He's traveled the world and seen so much, but still has the same reactions we might have to new places. Great video once again guys!
Would have been nice to get some stats on apartment costs for buying and renting, and overall cost of living, and how most residents are making a living..
I have seen condos there as low as $130,000. I think most of the apts are owned but I am sure there may be some for rent but would be likely based on each owner's choice, not a set price so to speak... That is about as much as I know because I would be retired when I get there (semi retired now) but if I find out more information, I will come back here and share!
8:25 As a veteran myself I just want to say thanks to both of guy The Marine that you said Thanks For Being A veteran appreciated that more than you could know.
My Dad was stationed there in 1959-1960. My mom, dad and brother and 2 sisters lived there on the 12th floor. I was born in Anchorage and then lived there with them until I was 1 year old where we then went to Panama for 6 years. I loved hearing the stories of a place I didn’t remember. Thanks for sharing.
Oh my goodness, the “thank you for being a veteran” was SO precious 🥹 not even a US citizen and Staffan goes out of his way to show gratitude. Seriously touched my heart!! -wife of a veteran 🇺🇸
Whittier!! Its impossible not to recognize the Begich towers if you know them, and I love that yall are here in Alaska (my home state). My parents used to keep their boat in Whittier, and I still pass through often to catch the ferry to Cordova across the sound. Whittier's a fascinating little town and Prince William Sound in general is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Best clam chowder and fish and chips in the state too, when the little cafe at the circle at the end of the road is open in the summer. I also love abandoned buildings, so much that I ended up working on cleaning them up. A lot of my sites look like the Buckner Building on the inside (there used to be a huge military presence around the Sound during world war 2) and I'm a lot less enthusiastic about exploring them now that I know what's in them. SO much asbestos and lead and when the walls are crumbling you're almost certainly getting exposed. I'm glad you respected the institutional controls they've got up - they really are there for people's safety. Thanks for showing responsible abandoned building exploration, too, which sometimes means not exploring at all, unfortunately.
I dunno, the whole town in the same building is kind of an introvert nightmare. Everyone possible is there, everyone potentially knows where you are at all times. No slipping outside and being anonymous in crowds of strangers. And no hiding where you live from surprise visits. I know people that would love it but id haaate it, because im introvert.
@@barryworx3465 Honestly I'm an introvert and I 100% agree. I LOVE big cities because you can always just be anonymous and no one if you want, but there's also opportunities to go outside your comfort zone and talk to people whenever you want too
My husband and I went to a small town on an island in Alaska this last summer for a few days. His parents ran a lodge there and my father-in-law spent a lot of time at his cabin on the island prior to that (it's in a town with a population of 60 and the closest grocery store is over an hour away). We were in one of the "bigger" towns. It's amazing to see how connected the community is and how welcoming they all are. It's also fascinating to learn and understand how the community works without the conveniences we have. It's in southeast Alaska and absolutely stunning. I was almost ready to pack up our lives and move there haha.
It was fun, what they did, but I was also interested in watching him telling us the whole story!! Hahahah He was sooo serious and deep into his thoughts 😂😂❤
I hope while you were there you got to take a chance to hike some of the trails up the road above the military compound. There are some stunning trails down to the water. I was there a couple of years ago and it was magical.
I love that Thomas just can't mask how he's feeling. Even though he leads a lot, when he's anxious or just done with stuff, you can see it on his face.
I'm so glad you guys experienced what Alaskans are like.... some of the best people! And Whittier can be one of the best scenic places or it can be miserable for tourists. I'm glad you had a picture perfect day there. Alaska just might steal your heart. Keep the travels going! If you ever want to go out to Kodiak or Unalaska, I would definitely love to go along and do some fishing.
Whittier is an interesting place. "Remote," yes, but it is also a cruise port for several major cruise lines. During Alaskan cruise season, mainly May to September, tens of thousands of travelers pass through the town. My wife and I will be there in a few months.
First time coming across one of your videos. I love the idea behind what you do and the energy you put out into the world. That nice lady that you guys went to dinner with was just the sweetest. I hope she's happy and well up there during the Alaska winter. Nice video boys, you've gained a sub.
Thomas’ rambling about the building and why he loves them…was🔥😂😂😂. Can we have a “short” vid on all that he said, please! We love you Thomas. Staffan is such a perfect fit! He says YES to everything and is the life of the party to sweet sweet June. I love her so much. What an absolute firecracker! I want her to be my mother. June, if you’re reading this and I hope you are, will you be my mother? 💕 I lost my mother in 2014. You are so fun! And I wish I was closer! But, I’m waayyyyy down in Texas. Best to you June and the guys. ALL of them! Great video, again as always. ❤
Ocean Falls, British Columbia was a town that pretty much lived in one gigantic building. Now it is being taken over by the Great Bear Rainforest. That whole area (Bella Coola, Bella Bella, Klemtu) sounds like a world unto itself, isolated with astonishing beauty. One can take a ferry linking up with these communities. It would make for an interesting video.
Ocean Falls living in one gigantic building??? I lived there for 13 yrs while my dad worked for the pulp & paper company that was the major employer at the time, and the only people who lived in a gigantic building was, I believe, the single guys who worked at the mill. The rest of us lived in apt bldgs and houses. What gigantic bldg are you referring to??
Just discovered you guys and you are AWESOME! Thank you for sharing you adventures with us. I live in one of the harshest climates on Earth in the opposite way as you depict in this video: The Mojave Desert, where it's not unusual to experience a several weeks each summer of temperatures of 115 to 120 degrees with nights not below 100. Yet we host one of Nevada's premiere resort destinations (9 large casino resorts in a mile of Colorado River frontage). We're Laughlin, Nevada, 90 miles south of Las Vegas where Nevada, Arizona and California meet in the most beautiful place I've ever seen. I visited in my high school years and tossed my whole life into the region after graduating from college in the early 1980s. I'm a newspaper reporter, and loving it even more in my early 60s. Rugged mountains, pristine desert, cold flowing river, Lake Mead National Recreation Area (our jewel is Lake Mohave, 68 miles of wilderness lake without the water-level challenges Lake Mead is facing) and an amazing "Desert-River Rat" culture. If you ever want to visit we'd love to host you, I work with the Chambers of Commerce and resorts so reach out if you're ever in our neck of the woods. We even have an abandoned building, a half-finished 20-story hotel that lost funding after the first 8 stories were built in the late 1980s. And it's right on the shore of the Colorado River. I've dubbed it "the ruins." Right up your alley, boys!! Thanks for a great video, keep appreciating discomfort and you will find nirvana!
It's always amazing to me how you guys bring people together and are a total inspiration to be a better person. Love, LOVE your videos, they Always help restore my faith in humanity
Years ago, I was commenting on your videos that you should visit Whittier because i knew you would find it fascinating lol and I doubt it was my comment that made you come here, but it’s awesome to see you guys in my state!!
I live in a house with 15 people, while it is not the same in many ways to this community, I do find it interesting that they have such closed off mindset while outside their apartments. In my house, the media room, the kitchen, etc are all common places where its basically like being in public and that's why I'm surprised this community isn't like that.
I have been here before! It was such a unique and fun experience. I went during the summertime, so it was a different experience. But regardless of the time of year you go, it is so beautiful in Alaska. It is well worth the trip out there!
Ahh, when I moved into the little town in Nimbin, Australia, I did not know that, because of the community, would be the BEST place EVER! Should come here guys, it is a hippy town, very famous in many places. We have all sorts of people, yet we live in harmony with each other (most of the times) and the people who cannot do it, simply leave...
@@lulumoon6942 The great thing is, we have lots of potholes on the roads and that is what is stopping "normal" people buying homes here 🙂Not an easy access, and has a very bad reputation about drug use from the past, which is even a bigger deterrent.
Lived in Whittier for a year back in 2015-16. Worst experience of my life. I was still in high school and the school there was terrible. Such a corrupt little town.
Hello random person I don't know, I have to agree with you I have lived here for 3 years and some of it is nice but The kids are disrespectful the elevators are always broken and the politics are batshit crazy.
@williamcarlson9086the politics are so crazy there. And they used to be worse than they are now, back when the city manager was Mark. My dad was the Harbormaster there and the poor guy was always dealing with BS.
I need more information about this place... Are the apartments for rent or for sale? What is the standard of living in the area, how much does it cost to live in that building/city? Can a foreigner simply move there? The only thing I need is stable Internet and a smaller apartment, as an introvert I am seriously considering selling everything I have and moving there.
@@andyw8558 I promise, you don’t want to live there. The people are like a cult there. If you don’t fit into a clique, you won’t be welcome. The cost of living is MUCH higher there. The little “grocery store” they have sells bags of Doritos for like $10+. If you want anything reasonably priced, you’ll have to make the 90 mile drive to anchorage for pretty much anything…but be careful because if you leave town and don’t time it right, you’ll be locked out for the night. If you want to move there, by all means do it. If you do, I hope your experience is better than mine, but at least someone warned you.
@@andyw8558 There are some places for rent And the Wi-Fi and cell service is relatively reliable. BUT The town politics are such a headache there's a lot of kids here who want to be gangsters and are extremely disrespectful. Also recently power was cut for a bit and someone's apartment didn't get power for a while but they were gone so some meat rotted in their freezer and now half the buildings smells terrible.
In Canada, the town for Fermont lives in a much bigger/larger wall building. Check it out, the reason almost the whole town lives in the wall building is because of the weather, but the building itself act as a wall to protect the rest of the city from the polar wind.
This one of my first videos of yours and you now have a new subscriber, love what you guys are doing and love the idea of yes theory, I’ve also subscribed to that channel as well, June was just the sweetest lady, looks like you guys had a great time in this beautiful little place.
Better Help is beyond hard for people who are on state healthcare, Medicare, and social security. So what do people do when this is their circumstances? Where do they turn for online help like Better Help?
June seemed like an absolute gem. It would be a blast to meet you guys one day. We took a Northbound Alaskan cruise in 2016, with a 4 day land tour afterwards. We got off the ship at Whittier. We rode the Alaska Railway through the tunnel to Denali. Our trip ended in Fairbanks, via shuttle bus from Denali. Our trip was at the end of August, first part of September and was absolutley magnificent. Best vacation ever! I would love to go back to Alaska and explore more. I never would have known that you could rent a room in the building.
Feel like you guys should go to Saskatchewan, it's not "isolated", it's just not very travelled too. While we were over there, the locals living on the ranches we stayed on thought we were canadian...we aren't, we're from Yorkshire in the UK! They just couldn't understand why we would come to the grasslands (which are so incredibly beautiful)
Hey guys, I have been watching you on TH-cam for quite some time now. I thought you might be interested in our town, Churchill Falls. It is a town of about 550 people who all work for the same company (Churchill Falls Labrador Corporation). The town was built in late 1960s, early 1970s to support construction and operation of the underground powerplant. The power plant is 1000 feet underground and only accessible by an elevator or a 1km tunnel through solid rock. The plant capacity is 5500MW. (About enough to power a medium-large sized city). The town is similar to the Alaska town, Whittier, in that we have one large building (town center) which houses the hotel, school, grocery store, swimming pool, curling rink. Then we have rows of houses which are all arranged on the same side of the road to ease the way for snowclearing. Our town is beautiful and I would love for you guys to visit!
Thank you for talking about the Buckner building a little bit. As someone who has been in that building twice and painted a mural reading "Happiness" in one of the top floor rooms it was one of the scariest/awesome places. There was always a risk of running into a bear in the lower floors or basement. So best to stick to the top floors.
Man I’ve never been more happy to come across Yes Theory! You guys bring so much joy to this world without realizing it simply by doing what you love. I don’t know how you guys did it to start and how many sacrifices you made just for this to be achieved but I wish I could do the same
I really want to buy a condo here and in fact have been saving up for it. The cold? Does not phase me, love Alaska... living in one building sounds fine to me and I heard they are pretty open minded/diverse... I always love seeing anything on Whittier! :)
Stefan, you’re the best! It’d be pretty amazing if I met you out there in the world, won’t happen but I’d love to be around someone who doesn’t care and lives solely intentional in every movement. My daughter was like that. She was the realest person I’ve ever met. We used to dance and sing and I miss that feeling of peace in my soul everyday. She was my compass. You have that energy ❤ it’s the best thing in the world to feel, don’t ever stop sharing that peace and hope. It changes everything in the spider web that bounces and connects to it. I’m sure you already know that. It is the essential part we need to survive. Water may keep our bodies alive but that feeling keeps us living. If not for my other daughter and partner I’d be with her.❤
At one point, you launched a contest for winning a skyjump over the pyramids. You mentioned the winner will be announced on this channel, any update on that?
I love the abandoned building rant 😍 There is beauty in decay, in impermanence…. It’s that why you say yes? Because if you say no, you may not ever get the chance again.
Please please take June out for an adventure somewhere in the world, her enthusiasm is contagious. She deserves an epic and amazing adventure. Take that lady dancing somewhere absolutely breathtaking ❤
@@Joe-Przybranowski What are you talking about? Not all advertising is a scam, it's just a way to get the word out about your company. Wow! Whittier looks so much better than when I was there. I was an able bodied sea-woman on Crowley tugboats out of Seattle. We delivered rail cars to Whittier in the early eighties. I remember making a phone call to my Mom back in Virginia in that military building. There was one good bar that the crew would have a meal and some drinks. I don't remember the name though. I could hardly believe how easy it was for you guys to take a dip, but I reminded myself that you are from Sweden. Great share! Thank you!

Whittier? 😆 I know that city. Staffan’s heart just radiates. You can feel his love and kindness, so beautiful 💜
I bet its some group of a Filipino descent singing their hearts out in the background... lol! This is a lovely episode. Good job guys.
bet! lmao
Hehehe yes sure they are Filipinos 😅
After hearing the song choices, yep that's Filipinos 😂😂😂
For sure. Hahah I was looking for this comment just to confirm that those were filipinos doing karaoke. 😂
The fact that Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now was the karaoke song made my night 😂 my ultimate guilty pleasure song
Staffan, you are a LEGEND!! You always bring a smile to my face and always find ways to make these videos even better!
Years ago, I was commenting on your videos that you should visit Whittier because i knew you would find it fascinating lol and I doubt it was my comment that made you come here, but it’s awesome to see you guys in my state!!
Love seeing the yes team in my home state of AK!
I wonder if this one will get more views than Peter Santenello's video.
They didn't really do as deep of a dive into the community as Peter did. It's a shame but I get it's not always easy to get a story.
No wonder why... I thought it looked familiar
Nope.
I want the full "why Thomas loves abandoned buildings" speech please!
It depends on the church, but a lot of times churches are left unlocked so that anyone at any point can come in and pray.
Every video I've seen of Whittier, the people seem absolutely lovely.
If you love it don't advertise it, take it from the member of such a place!
Awe, let Thomas have his moment geeking out about abandoned buildings. Don't do him dirty like that😂😂 🫶
She was the sweetest old lady they seem to always find the nicest people everywhere they go
1:48 the music mixing is overpowering the dialogue...
Get over it
This one of my first videos of yours and you now have a new subscriber, love what you guys are doing and love the idea of yes theory, I’ve also subscribed to that channel as well, June was just the sweetest lady, looks like you guys had a great time in this beautiful little place.
Better Help is beyond hard for people who are on state healthcare, Medicare, and social security. So what do people do when this is their circumstances? Where do they turn for online help like Better Help?
@@randomexploring541 even then they leak info
And if you guys do go, i can hit you up with some amazing recommendations to stay!
People truly underestimate the beauty of travelling across Canada! Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself :)
yes theory is slowly turning into go to random places and hang out with the elders (: its so wholesome
*The most serendipitous moment was meeting Staffan that random day in Sweden*
Bro I found your channel this past weekend and this is 7th video I've watched of yours. Fantastic channel!!
I discovered this channel a few months ago. It is great!
16:10 we share the same passion. Completely understand you Thomas.
I live in Alaska and have been a fan forever, it’s cool to see you guys here making videos. Hope you enjoyed
Awesome video guys!!
pretty sure the person singing is Filipino 🤣🤣 MYMP!
😂😂 Uyyy Pilipins!!
I thought so too 😂
A group of filipinos. Heheh
Man I’ve never been more happy to come across Yes Theory! You guys bring so much joy to this world without realizing it simply by doing what you love. I don’t know how you guys did it to start and how many sacrifices you made just for this to be achieved but I wish I could do the same
I love the energy of the seek discomfort channel!
Steffan melts my heart every episode he’s apart of ❤ You, Thomas and Steffan are truly beautiful people!
The fact that we get free videos on TH-cam by Seek Discomfort is truly a gift ... Keeping education and knowledge alive. 👏🙏🏽🤷
I really want to buy a condo here and in fact have been saving up for it. The cold? Does not phase me, love Alaska... living in one building sounds fine to me and I heard they are pretty open minded/diverse... I always love seeing anything on Whittier! :)
Some people move to remote areas because they don't want to be found.....
Theres also people who probably go there for the expirience. Some born there they love there go to school grow up there
So you can rent a room there? I totally loved this! Thanks.
Gosh, Staffan is such a gem.
That dance…was everything! Love and blessings to you guys❤❤❤
I just think that when there is a videoke there is a Filipino singing, holding a microphone and enjoying the moment
If not for my other daughter and partner I’d be with her.❤
Prayers to you Melanie 🙏🏼💕🙏🏼
At one point, you launched a contest for winning a skyjump over the pyramids. You mentioned the winner will be announced on this channel, any update on that?
I love the abandoned building rant 😍 There is beauty in decay, in impermanence…. It’s that why you say yes? Because if you say no, you may not ever get the chance again.
Thankyou for always providing us with the best content
Please please take June out for an adventure somewhere in the world, her enthusiasm is contagious. She deserves an epic and amazing adventure. Take that lady dancing somewhere absolutely breathtaking ❤
CAN YOU GUYS PLEASE STOP TAKING THE BETTER HELP SPONSORS??? THEY'RE SUCH A TERRIBLE COMPANY!
This is true. They really are awful. Even my therapist said they are basically a scam.
They are being paid tens of thousands to sponsor lol they do not care. Do you not know money is the only thing that matters the most people?
Let him make the money.
All advertising is a scam.
@@Joe-Przybranowski What are you talking about? Not all advertising is a scam, it's just a way to get the word out about your company. I'm annoyed about them taking a Better Help sponsorship because their company is known to hire people who are not actual therapists, and treat their clients, who are already going through plenty of psychological difficulties as it is, terribly
Okay thank you for getting the tears going at the end. I just discovered this Channel and you guys are so beautiful!! Thank you for bringing the beauty of Whittier Alaska to TH-cam!!
I effing love Thomas for doing the totally wack sh*t. He truly seeks discomfort.
Can't believe you guys were in Alaska and I missed it! If you guys are still here and looking for more adventures I have plenty to suggest!
From Alaska. You have to go back in July. You won't even recognize it. Totally different place. And make sure to do a kayak trip.
Cannnot tell you how much I enjoyed AND NEEDED this!!
Just had watched a vid on another channel of a visit to Gstaad, Switzerland (the most expensive town in Europe!) and then yours ... taught me a lot about people and values in far-a-way places. Never knew about you guys before but your positivity and "Say Yes" attitude wil have me coming back! Happy New Year to you both! 🌲🌲🌲 Brian in Chicago🌲
I can’t believe this place is real…
I have had reoccurring dreams about this place… 😳
Thank you!
