My father loved Christmas and firmly believed more is more. There were swags and wreaths everywhere, but I was the one who had to make them!
I used to find that heavy-duty floristry tape was better than wire for making the base layer. It made the base layer more stable. I then used to wire in the next layer of greenery. For over-door swags, I always used hang mistletoe...in hope, oh the disappointment, it was rarely used!
I used to use a wide variety of decorative items, including walnuts, which I often gilded, and also dried flowers, leaves, and poppy heads that I collected during the year. Dried limes also work well alongside dried oranges, and the smell is more interesting.
Another thing that I did was to make up small bags, like lavender bags, but with Christmassy pot pourri, and hide them in the indoor wreaths (more really did mean more) so that everytime the door was opened it caused a waft of Christmas.
These days, living alone, I do not even bother to put up a tree for myself, but I like to see how others decorate their houses.
    Merry Christmas to all...

Not sure if this has already been said but wrapping the lights around a rectangular piece of cardboard will keep it from getting tangled. Makes the whole process less murdery!! LOL!

Oh how I love watching you and all you show me and us ! I’m feeling rather sad because our Daughter just texted me she’s not coming at all for Christmas 😢 were only 15 minutes at the most away !! She’s young, 26 But old enough. We’re 66 and someday we aren’t going to be here for her to come home to😢 There’s never been anything to create feelings of anger and such. Yes she has to work BUT not the whole 48 hours ! We her parents are very open minded and we can celebrate any day ! And we’re willing to. She just doesn’t want to. Anyway your Christmas Tree and putting it in your home and the homemade stand was, is enchanting and full of love ! Your wreaths everything BROGHT a smile to my Heart ❤ Funny Thought !! For years I herd Boxing Day from other British you-tubers I follow !! I always wondered why Britain would have a Big Holliday the Day after Christmas!! Like you know Boxing is a sport here. I never thought of a BOX and Gifts ! What a lovely way of doing things !!! Made me laugh ! I always thought of tons of people in a stadium I’ll shouting for whomever they want to win made me think of Hamid Ali. Not golden and Red bows !!!! XoxoxDeb In California 🎄🎄❤️❤️🎄🎄🎁🎁🎁

Canadians have Boxing Day too. Aren't you supposed to put the tree in a container of water so it doesn't dry out? We have really good plastic stand that holds our tree up perfectly and allows us to put water in the bowl at the bottom so the tree stays well hydrated all the time it's up.

    • @itzel1735
      @itzel1735 ปีที่แล้ว

Water or damp sand would be better, yes, but the tree was freshly cut, and if the room is cool, (as I think they’ve said) it can be ok. Happy Christmas.

I adore your Christmas tree! In my 63 years of living, I’ve never put up an artificial tree, or even purchased a real one. Every year we find one of natures gifts on our property. Scraggly, crooked, or sparse, it doesn’t matter. It wouldn’t be Christmas any other way! Thanks so much for the very entertaining video! Merry (Happy) Christmas from upstate NY!

Happy Holiday! Love your tree! A proper Norwegian spruce at last! (no shrubs no plastic! YAY!) Your English traditions of foraging and making wreaths and swags are very much like Scandinavian ones. It smells so lovely doesn't it? We make doormats from spruce as well (to shake off the snow) and little woodland advent arrangements with moss, four candles ( for each advent sunday) and litte red mushrooms, berries and tiny gnomes, which I think we share with Germans as well.
I love a natural tree, with ornaments from all the years gone by rather than all the "designer/department store" plastic trees too coordinated and stuffed with new collections of trinkets every year. It's the time for childish joys, textures and scents, goodies, lovely hymns peaceful candle light and higgledy piggledy magic! Boxing day is a wonderful tradition, we should all adopt immediately! 💝
Merry Christmas and a most happy end of the year to all of you!
    LOVE /Jo ❤️

We are new fans and absolutely love the updates and videos here in the Pacific Northwest. Living in a region where working forests and forestry are a given part of everyday life, I wanted to make two suggestions, if you don't mind, about the trees you passed on.
    1. Maybe limb those bottom limbs off of the trunk. It will encourage growth at the top making it a good candidate, if it survives the trunk damage, for next year.
    2. It might be worth planting a couple dozen trees well spaced for future trees in a decade and beyond. While we are particular to Douglas Firs here, I am certain there are different ones that would be wonderful for the future use of the estate.
Was a lot of fun to watch the Christmas prep on Christmas day - Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you all!

I just love how real you all are. Yes, the house is ancient, but that means it is resilient. I love the beautiful old house and furniture. I love that you all dress practically and wear old clothes sometimes. If things are good, in good repair, no point in buying tons of new clothes or furniture... Things can be mended, repaired.
I am your kind of people, even though I don't live in an ancient mansion, or a not so ancient mansion even. Lol.
I suppose my British genes make all this seem very homey to me.

    Good Afternoon !
    Lovely video !
I wonder if there are any plans to plant small evergreen trees as provision for future Christmas trees ?
It was said during the video that Luke's parents were thought to have planted the trees shown . It would
be a valued tradition to continue , for your children , and generations to come ...also good to replace ones
    cut down previously .
Wishing you all good health and joy !

Julie I was watching the Christmas special from the tv show and you stated many times the many British traditions that are not done in the US. Maybe in the Midwest, but I assure you, garlands and mince pies are definitely part of Christmas on the East Coast. Perhaps it is being part of the original 13 colonies. I would suggest you take a look at the decor and food served in Colonial Williamsburg and you will see how those same traditions are woven into our great American tapestry. I have been making garlands since before you were born either with bought roping or roping we made ourselves and decorated. This was in New Jersey. We raised our natural elements game when we moved to Williamsburg, VA. Take a look, it may give you some ideas of blending both countries.

NEVER have to untangle Christmas lights again! As you remove them, wrap them around a hunk of carboard (salvage the side of a large carton from Christmas presents/deliveries/whatever. A little slot cut in one edge is where you can start attaching the "top" of the string, and put the plug-end into another slot. Lay your board full of lights on top of your Christmas decor bin. No more tangles, no more hassle, and easy to string them up next year, unwinding from the board as you go. You can also buy plastic Christmas tree light string holders, but cardboard is typically free, lasts for years. Do the same with your outdoor lights.

You bring laughter to us all '....... how do YOU feel about that?' LOL
Merry and Happy Christmas to you and your beautiful family. The wreaths and swags are beautiful and I just love that the (higgely piggely) tree comes from your property. Enjoy time together. From Michigan
