    Old convertables have the worst rust under the window frame chrome. I restored my friends 1967 Firebird, FirebirdCentral had the upper cowl and upper dash panels but the I had to make the entire lower window trough and repairs in the upper body itself. They also had the floors, seat risers, both quarters, door skins, outer wheelhouses, tail pan. Rockerpanel and lower fender rust was typical. Rebuilt a Ram Air III and matching Turbo 400, pipes, brakes, suspension, steering followed by three months of block sanded high build primer. Gun Metal two stage urethane, color sand and polish ..I'm retired so I did 4-6 hrs/day and the project took me and entire year ..but it was perfect with is new 400 Hood and tach and ram air kit. I made so nice pocket cash but after all that work, ..I wish it was mine. LOL

      Yes...but then removed 90% of it. Kinda how that works. Fill and remove to flush. If it's too much it was because you left huge gaps in the metal or you have bulges in the paint.

    Good episode guys. Really hit home. Two of my bucket list cars were featured and I got a buddy who wants to sell me his dad’s 67 firebird vert project that looked very similar to yours. It’s been sitting in a garage for 20yrs at least but his dad hacked it up pretty bad before he gave up. I’m retired and half done an 03 marauder restomod so I have most of the tools and some experience but the fact you guys passed up on your firebird has me worried. I just keep thinking it’s a 67 firebird convertible and it’s got to be saved.

    it is simple for you none Body guys T-tops or Convertibles or even roadsters = RUST BIG TIME as in Man hours it is not a factor of your own time and Cost IF it is your passion and your project/baby I throw in over 600+ hours into a 68 mustang ( when I used to live in the US ) and I yes I would do it again But when you take on too many projects like this Show has its easy to get carried away and before you know it its over.. but.. Stick with it Good show Love what you guys do at Powernation ..

    How or what do you do to treat the braces behind the panels?
    What do you do to the back side of your patch panels to protect against rust.
    Obviously at times you cant get primer to those areas. So over time it will rot out again.

    That there Firebird is one of them specially modified factory tubs with the "Metal Delete" high perfomance option, less weight, flow-through air cooling, and built-in inspection holes that also act as deer whistles when at highway speed.
    Unfortunately, not very rare for GM cars built in that decade.

    don't use regular bondo over weld patches even a pinhole will let moisture through and make it pop... use high resin filler like bondo glass, kitty hair especially on thicker applications. it will reduce call backs and last longer.. remember filler is talc with resin .. lightweight filler has less resin so whenever you can use a higher resin filler.. takes longer to kick but its worth the wait

    You never use a orbital sander on bondo . block sanding - 40 grit down to 80 then lighter grit till you get it smooth and never put bondo over a painted or painted area that has been sanded . it's not a good foundation for bondo . 24 to ruff up the metal surface for bondo to stick to. Your also suppost to get all rust off of the metal surfaces and spray weld through primer with zink between the sandwiched panels

    What about all that rust INSIDE the rockers that you sealed in with your patches? Is there no way to fix that? Seems like it'll just come bubbling through and make holes, eventually.

    • @zososldier

      There are places that you can have your car dunked in chemicals that will convert the rust. Then you can use these little hoses that attach to paint guns/cans to coat the inside of cavities you don't have access too like rockers or pillars.

    PN can talk about cutting out rust sections & replacing w/ patches or filler patches all day. BIG DEAL! Once that rust section is ground down or cleaned out or replaced, what are some of the options to protect that bare metal? I've found that NAPA Paint offers a Zinc-based rattle can corrosion-resistant paint(NOT corrosion-proof) that will stand up to the arc heat & acts like a weld flux. So when everything is done, that section will last longer then just letting condensation make more rust. This is what I've been told by the NAPA rep. I'm sure there are other methods but it all comes down to protecting welded blind sections. Any protection is going to get burnt off from welding. Does PN have any suggestions for this dilemma?

    • @zososldier
      @zososldier 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a few things you can do. You can sand blast it then dunk it in basically a ultra sonic cleaner to get all the rust in the cavities you can't reach. Once all of that is done, they make little hoses that attach to paint guns/cans that you can use to spray inside stuff you don't have access to like rocker panels or pillars. Once you paint the car, you can bed line the under side and that should stop rust from below.
      But like dude above me said, don't drive on salty roads. Ever.

    The origanail Shelbys are better than the new stuff that they claim to be Shelbys. You go back in time and get a real Shelby and you will not find a ford sticker any place on that car. Yea he got the cars from Ford but he removed all the ford stamping and anything that showed ford.

    • @CamaroAmx
      @CamaroAmx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the late 60s, Ford was building Shelby Mustangs in house with shelby’s approval. Shelby was too busy with the GT40 and other big projects. Shelby mustangs from about 67 forward are just licensed from Shelby. They still had to meet his approval. In many cases, Shelby’s team made the prototypes using Ford performance parts and a few custom touches and ford made the production ones.

    Why did they go to all this trouble just to weld it back up with rust and sand inside? And that's *after* it was sent to be blasted? It all has to be pulled apart to start, resurfaced, primed... or else tear it apart again in a few years which nobody's gonna want to do, which means a death sentence for the car. At least blow it out good and fog what you can't get to with converter. Also the guy's supposed to be priming something (be busy for the shot) at 3:23 then lays the pan on it. Stop worrying about setting up shots and being cool, let the camera guy do their thing, and focus on the job. :)
