How reverential is this? The irony is not lost in who’s playing what and with so much tenderness, care and d beauty… rare it is to witness such maturity … bravo Berliner philharmonic for your sincere talent and respect.
To witness artistry of this caliber is the ultimate privilege. Bravo.
One of my favorite pieces , probably makes my top 10 of all time
I don't know how Maestro Rattle can conduct this without a tissue in one hand. How can you not be moved to tears from this beautiful performance of one of Elgar's masterpieces.
Sincerest condolences to Her Majesty
Show your solidarity to the Greek Philharmonic Orchestra ... They couldn't have chosen a more fitting song to show the anguish they must have been feeling when they were told that "there is no place for music". Brought me to tears.
Had tears in my eyes after listening to this. Thank you :)
I cry too every time I hear this;....
Me too!
Brett Butler if you want a pretty much different experience of this song, listen to « the globalist » of Muse, and wait until the 8th minute😉
wasn't THAT bad.
@@MrDaiseymay very funny...
El compositor Edward Elgar es fantástico y la Orquesta maravillosa en su interpretación!! Un lujo escuchar!!
Often conductors follow Elgar's tempo direction too faithfully, making it sound like a marching band piece. This performance gets the tempo just right :)
Interesting to see the different body language of musicians on 'stronger' areas. Cellos, violins, some almost static while others nearly standing from the chairs :-)
Bravo!!!! Heaven, we are in heaven.
One of Britain's finest composers.
Yes . But he was treated badly by the British . B
C'est tellement beau !
J'adore les Variations Enigma, j'aimerais tant qu'Olivier les programme à Espace Musical de l'AP-HP !
Christophe Grangean on va lui suggérer !
Ah oui je vote pour !

What is it about this piece of music that touches your soul?
Excellent performance!
I wonder why this spectacular video doesn't start from the beginning of this piece.
Long live Britain !
alright then
Bellísima !!!
best ive heard on youtube
ecouter elgar un grand compositeur
I’m not religious there’s no supernatural entity called god we’re part of the very fabric of the universe lucky we are but when I hear Elgar I can believe in humanities heaven
Literally how are there 47 dislikes on this video? Why are there any!?!?
Dunkirk finale! 👍🏻

Both require great musicianship.
i dedicate this to my late father, who died on the 20th January 2024 age 91. He respected and enjoyed all of Elgars works, every Sunday without fail, he would take a random vinyl's and enjoy. god i miss him.....
The story behind this is what makes it so powerful. Elgar, deep in darkness and falling out of love with music was visited by his German friend Jaeger. Somehow, and we dont know what was said, Jaeger resurrected Elgar's passion for melody and create this piece...in my opinion his most evocative.
It speaks of his connection with the countryside surrounding his Malvern home, his love and respect for his friend but most of all the growing resiliance that comes from recovery.
English, British, European but most of all human.
Merci pour cet éclaicissement. Thank you for this precious comment. Such moving music. So much English and universal as well. Undescribable the effect on the privileged people like me who had the opportunity to listen to it at the Albert Hall, in the presence of the Queen (August 1994).
@@jeanattali4005 mon plaisir
We do know what was said. Elgar expressed his sense of failure but Jaeger, who worked for his music publisher Novello, encouraged him and the conversation turned to Beethoven. Jaeger hummed a theme from the adagio of the Pathetique and Elgar was enthused and continued composing. The Enigma variations were his first truly gigantic success (an echo of that theme can be heard in the Enigma theme) after which the floodgates opened. A year later, Gerontius was a huge international success.
.
@@amielschotz4982 thank you. It must've been a truly awesome friendship.
M'mmmm but are you sure, about that? I read of a far simpler reason ; Elgar was tinkling on the keys, searching for a theme, and played the opening bars of this, to be famous--music, and his wife called out, that's a nice one dear, a 'Keeper', and so he did.
people living in Berlin are so lucky. I am 33 years old and have been here twice. Each time took me over 10 hours flight from China, and took months ahead to buy the ticket online. look forward to my 3rd trip.
yeah not happenin for sometime
I rarely hear this without tearing up...great job orchestra and Maestro Rattle!!!
I can relate
The Berliners give their all to make an extraordinary intensity of sound. If only every professional orchestra in the world had this level of commitment
ok---but I was disappointed with the closing, too sudden, the sound almost disappered.
They are the very best, ever.
Philip Croft That’s the end of a kind, generous life. Rattle has it just right.
A awful lot do.
The sonoric rise and fall, the swelling of the seas surrounding us, the undulation of grassy hills - how it makes me feel for a land that is forever England.....
Wonderful. Amazing how moving music can be. No other medium has such an effect. Thank you.
true
Such beautiful and sublime music. A long time favorite of mine. If this doesn't pull at your heartstrings, you must be already dead.
Well said
Eu aprecio muito essa música. É sublime eleva o espírito do Ser ás alturas. E a interpretação por essa magistral orquestra mostra a grandeza da perfeição humana. Parabéns e obrigado
It speaks of the human heart, i think-- sad, pensive, triumphant, swelling and sinking on the waves of life, rising again with love and hope.
A stunningly moving excerpt of one of the greatest orchestral movements composed by an Englishman. Bravo!
Bravo Berlin Philharmonic! The world’s gold-Standard orchestra!
Music simply does not get any more perfect than this.
"Dunkirk" brought me here. Wonderful movie with highest emotions.
I am not speaking this with the slightest bit of arrogance, but it really is such a pity that for most people who are non-classical listeners, movie is the only gateway for them to discover classical masterworks
@@KinkyLettuce Very true. Our current generation can now only relate to classical music through cinema. But ya know what, if that's what it takes to expose everyone to classical music, then by golly that's what we shall do lol.
@Joshua: Exactly my words. Totally agree with you!
That's the magnificent Berlin Philharmonic playing with their Rattle...
A perfect example of what a conductor means to a performance: this is a passionate rendition of the piece Barenboim treats with reverence, and awe!
The Berlin Philharmonic shines as bright as the conductor. Watch how the concertmaster reacts when Rattle points to him.
Tears in eyes. Thank you sir Simon Rattle and Elgar of course..
Tears and goose bumps! Thank you BPO and Sir Simon!
About 2 mins in there is a magical moment where conductor, ochestra and the music of Elgar are totally at one. Beautiful
LOVE Nimrod from Enigma Variations. This is a great performance!
Thanks! We're always happy for any feedback.
well--there's a mixed bag here, mostly APPRECIATIVE, naturally.
MUCHÍSIMAS GRACIAS🌹🌹🌹
Thank you, love from Elgars county England
when l start to hear ,I cried.
*Involuntary shudder* from head to toe. Bravo to the BPO and Maestro Rattle!
Every Pom stands an inch taller when hearing this little tune.
La primera vez que escuché esta melodía fue en la ceremonia de inaguracion de los juegos olimpicos Londres 2012
Magistral! Cette musique est une nourriture de l'âme.
Passionate! Even the musicians seemed to be caught up in passionate musical expression!
To the memory of my father who listened to this every year at the service at the Cenotaph thinking of his comrades who couldn’t
You can actually hear the passion put into playing this
Musik, die die Seele aufreisst ...
Grossartige Einspielung! Sehr schöne Tempi - intensiv und ohne Showpathos!
Back again to fill my eyes and ears with this wonderful performance. Love the Berliner!! Love Maestro Rattle!!
One of my favorite compositions. A moving and emotional piece.
Jaeger thank you it must have been important what you said to poor elgar.
Happy birthday Elgar. We will always remember you by this amazing variation from your Enigma Variations.
This is superbly divine. I cannot find the complete performance after joining😢
Tears in my eyes. Congratulations BerlinPhil. Bravo Sir Simon Rattle. Greetings from Brazil. Wonderful!
it would be nice to hear the beginning

MUCHISIMAS GRACIAS por su brillante interpretación de NIMROD🌹🌹🌹.
The Berlin Phil is the greatest thing to happen to humanity. And the Berlin Phil's TH-cam Channel is the only thing worth having internet.
Assolutamente perfetto!!!
Heaven! This is heaven
Brilliant conducting of possibly the greatest orchestra on the planet. Nobody gets me as emotional as Sir Simon Rattle he is just phenomenal even at his age. Long may he live to conduct!
He's not so old. He's only 62 :) another 20 years of conducting
Everett Cox Yes!! Nobody gets me as emotional as Sir Simon either.
Uplifting movements! Love! Emotions!
Love this piece of music by the great English composer Elgar. Nearly brings a tear to my eye.
I just teared up again because I haven't watched this video in several weeks. Rattle is now my favorite conductor along with Barenboim.
Hear! hear!
Can anyone else imagine this music when you enter Heaven? I feel it would be just as close.
me too.......truly sublime.
Yet there is no Heaven or Hell so do not worry about that :D
Tommy England Tommy, my dear, I'm certainly not worried about myself. What I am worried is you along with the millions whom have their hearts hardened.
I'm with Tommy. No gods no devils, no heaven no hell. Just this Earth, this Solar System, this Galaxy and this Universe.
As to "hardened hearts", why did your god create the Earth and all life on it, then drown everything but an old man and his family??? I would not want to go where that god is when I die. I would be afraid he would bring some other calamity down upon me.
Fairy tales and nonsense.
Everett Cox I like how you distinguish the difference between good and evil. Naturalists and scholars haven't particularly concluded the origin of our ethics; well, there are muddled incoherent theories to it. Everett, how are we able to tell what is good and evil? Why was it wrong for God to drown civilization except the "old man and his family"? And if you're in favor of moral relativism, you contradicted yourself by making a moral judgement to a "fairy tale nonsense".
Sublime
One of my favorite clips on TH-cam! BTW, I didn't know Billy Murray played timp for the BPO.
I am crying my eyes out
Know of any other videos with such spot-on camera work. They rarely miss it. When the oboe starts, the camera is right there, etc.
Perfectly captured, with crisp, professional camerawork
From the Land of no music by the great Berlin Phil , and conducted by the man that didn't get his promised concert hall. If only the mean Tory donors would stump up for a national concert hall , rather than lining their own pockets and avoiding tax and any philanthropy. It should be called the Henry Wood Hall , and based in South or East London
Interprétation remarquable de Simon Rattle .
Well done.
Vraiment impressionnant Simon Rattle est vraiment excellent.
this is wonderful
you actually uploaded it again with the last chord! it's things like this that makes BerlinPhil my favourite youtube channel
Such a good piece by Berlin Phiharmoniker!
I Bought This Record Album in The mid 80’s after hearing it on The Radio Station , Just The Last movement . When I Heard Nimrod I FEEL IN ♥️♥️♥️♥️LOVE ! I Played It for a Friend He Did The Same ! I Thought You want To Through a Guilt Trip 🙁☹️😫😢😭at Your Funeral Just Play This Peace !!!!
Rattle, checché se ne dica in certi circoli che si credono particolarmente colti, è un grande direttore, ed il tempo sarà galantuomo, rivalutandone le interpretazioni.
Sublime.
Just out of this world the finest the best
Now THAT'S what Elgar was feeling. Consummate.
My euro songfestival, and the 12 points go to Elgar!
Jan-Pieter van Waasbergen sound great played on brass by the Guards band........
1:50 The conductor is like "This fucking GUY! Best violinist!"
only to a uncouth idiots mind
Don't you dare use the f word in the context of nimrod.
