The music captures, quite perfectly, the quiet, inexorable ebb and flow that the pain of grief places upon one's very soul....and, at the end, the possibility of acceptance ( the final major chord). This is why God gave us music...

This is finest interpretation of this spectacular musical masterpiece that I have ever heard. Sir Colin Davis brings out the incredible raw emotion of this piece like no other conductor through his masterful implementation of rubato, dynamics and his suberb musical artistry. Considered to be one of the most melodic songs to be created. A person can interpret its meaning in so many ways which makes variations unique to the listener. There is hope, light, mystery and death. Yet, from death comes resurrection into the light once more. One could say that even the resurrection itself mirrors the universe and combines everything else into one opus such as this gem gives us. An incredible performance by the orchestra along with long time conductor Sir Colin Davis. A beautiful piece which will remain as timeless as our limitless imaginations can be.

The late Colin Davis was one of my favorite, perhaps "the" favorite of contemporary conductors, for me. He used to guest conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra decades ago when Seiji Ozawa was Music Director and the principal conductor, and Ozawa was excellent, but the exquisite Colin Davis was so elegant and the best. Probably I heard him conduct , as I sat in the balcony, Mozart or someone who required a refined manner interpretation, just as here with Elgar. All I can say is that I was in the right place at the right time to hear Colin Davis live more than once. (So interesting to watch his understated manner here in this video. That's exactly how I remember him so many years ago - and the sense that he was delivering a performance close to what was intended by the composer.)

Colin Davis ne interpreta alla perfezione dinamiche e tempo.

The final section of 'the Globalist' by Muse is inspired by this piece. And it's beautiful.
