…and so did Telemann (not Armenian folk melodies, but German, 200 hundred years earlier, and Glinka (Russian), a bit over a 100 years earlier. By the way, I don't like Glinka, but just to illustrate that's how things often work, especially in the case of folksy composers like Glinka and Khachaturian).

It is like a zillion people sitting there each one playing a different instrument, individually it will sound terrible, yet together it sounds perfect. Do they teach this in musical schools or it is just a gift some people have?!

It's the art of orchestration. Writing a nice melody is one thing but orchestrating it properly is not an easy thing. You have to know the sound and the possibilities of each instrument.

I love how when you watch a top quality professional orchestra playing the violin bows move as one in perfect synchronicity. That's not my memory of learning the instrument at school. They moved more like parts of a dysfunctional hay-baler.

@@41-Haiku That's a good one. I forgot that the song was played in Honey I Shrunk The Kids. For some reason, it always reminds me of the Hayden Planetarium. I am pretty sure it was played there many years ago when I was a kid in the late 60s or early 70s. I can't find anyone to confirm that. I do know it was also featured in the Big Bang Theory TV series.

My favourite piece because in school we practised so hard on this (one of the hardest song we ever did for our line up that time) and went for national competition and got first with honours. All the hard work was worth it, now when I listen to this again, sometimes it gives me happiness but it also reminds me the tough days we went thru. Lol. Still love it though!

This is surprisingly one of the hardest short pieces for an orchestra to play. Different parts of the orchestra are hitting syncopes and beat/off-beat throughout the whole piece. One small miss in the synchro and the whole thing falls apart. The tambourine, the drum, the violins, the winds, all playing on different beats. This specific performance is actually one of the better ones. I have yet to find a perfect one on YT. On this one, things fall apart a bit between 1:03 and 1:10, but then they're picked up. But you can't count that against them. A superb performance by all means. Incidentally, I love the smile on the three violinists' faces at 1:39. I can't imagine how fun it would be to play this piece in an orchestra.

They totally rockedd it, I still remember how it felt to be in there knowing some of those kids and what they had accomplished. the teacher retired that year, Dr Wells at Christiansburg High School, VA. He made such a difference in my daughters life and was a fine teacher who was loved by all.
