      very true. most of the cars in the lineup (those and trains are the only things i’m interested in from TLG nowadays) that are 18+ i would have loved when i was 12-14. i think this one almost takes some appreciation of modern engineering to fully enjoy the build.

    Each crane has a lifting diagram (in the cabin also). If you check a real one, that might have incredible low lifting weight capacity in flat angles. If you make a linear calculation: 1) 1 dimension ratio to the weight; 2) rational weight difference (because it is made of plastic). Then you can get how much the lego version should lift in what angle

    • @musictolive4
      @musictolive4 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I am a crane driver and enthousiast myself. And I know a view things of the real crane. I know that it can lift 660 (metric)tons at a distance of 100 metres.
      So the real crane is quite a beast!

    The more I look into this set, it looks like what really happened is that Lego ran into some real engineering problems and materials limitations while designing this set. It's novel and impressive looking, but I can't help but wonder if the noticeable changes from the real thing are simply because they couldn't find a half-decent way to build this set and still have it be more or less "functional". They probably could have resolved the issue with more new parts... but that would turn this set into a sunk-cost monstrosity (for Lego).
    To point out an easy difference, the lack of counterweights on the back of crane's main body. I think this would have resulted in the body not balancing well on the central ring. It could have also become too heavy to turn around. Similarly, the tracks dancing around with the top spins means that the tracks are simply too light. Which means bigger tracks (perhaps even a double-track system)... and stronger/more motors to turn everything. Issues like these keep cropping up, and before long you find out the biggest limiting factor is that you're working with plastic and not steel.
    And I wouldn't be surprised if the crane model mentioned was the original intent for this set... and simply didn't work, resulting in a scaled back but still very functional version of a crawler crane.
    And for anyone who has been around cranes... seeing the tracks lift off the ground *AT ALL* is a terrifying sight.
    The guys running the excavators might have fun doing that, but you never see that with the cranes. Luckily, this is just Lego.
    To comment on the price? It's definitely too much, and I think the price is intentionally inflated to cover the bigger than anticipated design costs along and to offset the expected lower sales. While the price appears to be the biggest complaint, the other issues with the set would have inevitably come to light. I think Lego is expecting only the most dedicated and die-hard fans to get this one, and are bumping the price in an attempt to off-set the already incurred costs during the design phase. I think this is definitely not a "price per piece" issue so much as it ended up being a much bigger design cost.
    On the bright side, it's very likely that Lego learned quite a few lessons from designing this set, which will go to helping design future sets.

      @andrewlarsen9700 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Would have been nice to see it they used metal wrapped in plastic counterweights instead, would have added more lifting capacity. Also could account for the much higher price as the counterweights won't get much use in other sets.

      I think their legal department put their foot down. Cranes are very tricky and need very skilled operators assisted by loads of sensors not to tip over. I once built a big Lego crane with regular Lego Technic parts and started fooling around with ever heavier weights and counterweights. All fine and dandy right up to the point the load let go and my crane turned into a trebuchet. The hook came nowhere near my face but with less luck could have taken out an eye. Not something you want to sell nowadays.

    @NicolasSaudemont 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I don't know much about crane, but I was expecting the counterweights to be moved further back in order to compensate for heavy loads. At first, I thought that would be linked to the overload detector (either by a motor, or just geometry with a shaft pulling/pushing them away from the center of gravity.
    That could be a customisation theme for a MOC based on this model.

    Yes, the first thing that came to mind when seeing the set was that the counterweight would not be enough. I would imagine if there was another counterweight far back on the ground (akin to the 'real' LR13000) then the lifting capacity would be improved. (Although structural stress and bending will have to be factored in.) 🤔

      However the lack of hanging weights on the rear is not accurate and would completely fix the weight issue. In real life it has about triple the counter weights. Also the boom should be about 8 feet taller to match scaling😅

    How hard is it really to control this mechanism
    Plus lego should make a real technic forklift truck being the same scale as this lr model plus with motor and app

    For comparison, check out the Mould King Liebherr LR13000. It has all the right proportions and is actually affordable.

    Really amazing work! Thank you for your efforts. How low can a load be lowered below grade (i.e. beneath the level of the table the tracks are sitting on)?

    Add some counterweights even if it's not lego to see how well it operates. This is a really cool set.

    Now they just need to make a LEGO version of this crane in the 250 meter tall configuration. That would make the model almost 5 meters tall.

    I do wonder if it would look better with just a longer boom, without the jib. And of course, we are all waiting for someone to build the real-life configuration with the doubled-up boom, shown in the fotos in the instructions.

    Wonder why they went with a sand blue gear rack sleeve for the weight sensor mechanism. Yellow or DBG would’ve worked much better here. Maybe to clear the excess stock after that ninjago set a few years ago?

    you incorrectly estimated the load capacity of the crane, you need to put the boom completely up and the goose, too, this will give you the opportunity to lift the load directly under you and show the maximum load capacity

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn't estimate anything, I simply showed the amount of load and the position when the alert kicks in

    you should have weight them all at the same time and just divide by count to get a better average weight

    How does the load sensing work? Does the hub have a tilt/compas sensor built in and then it measures the angle it sits at to estimate the load?

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly, the hub has a tilt sensor
