- Can a car ever be art? Most experts say no, but they obviously haven't seen the Alfa Romeo 8C, the best looking car ever made - according to Jeremy Clarkson (even if it is utterly impractical).

I used to work for a prestige car dealer which sold new Audi, Porsche and Ferrari vehicles. Occasionally we'd have used Astons, Bentley, Merc, McLaren and Lamborghini for sale also. The staff got used to seeing some pretty cool stuff. Then one day a customer drove an 8C into the middle of the carpark and revved the engine. I shit you not, 4 buildings emptied of staff in a few seconds and crowded the car.

A decade later and these segments feel as fresh as ever. Golden era of Top Gear.
This car isn't a supercar, it's a gran tourer. Same class as the California or the DB9. So yeah, it's slow and can't turn very well, but it sounds and looks so good. Just imagine driving one of these down the Italian Riviera.

Won't be out dragging a P1 or even a Hellcat any time soon, but I'm pretty sure if we were in one right now and I mashed the gas to the floor you'd piss yourself and beg for mommy. Attitudes like this are ruining sports cars.
It's not fast. It's very fast for non track purposes with magnifent styling, uniqueness and build quality that will leave its owner smiling every time he or she looks at it or drives it.

I think alfa romeo could have made this today and the styling wouldn't be in the slightest bit dated, it looks like it could rival the f type coupe for looks, not to mention the roadster versions of both cars.

Adrian Daret I think you're right, but that is unfortunately rare today. Cars today are built like iPhones, in the sense that an iPhone is a beautiful object until the next one comes out and the old one looks fat and bulky, all on an annual cycle. That's why cars like the 8C will stand out so highly in 40 years when we look back on the era of early 21st century cars.
I think cars are getting uglier and uglier and cars like that give me hope!
F-type has copied Soooo much of the 8c the interior centre console is a direct copy. Ian Callum has an 8C, Enough said
they have the "mito" nowadays it's the small version of the 8c. and drives f awesome! (the quadrifoglio version)
After seeing and hearing one of these in person, the noise this car makes is worth twice the price. It is the remarkable, hair-raising sound I've ever heard come out of a road car.

I’ve been in a 8c twice. My dad was driving it. It’s just bloody amazing.
I saw one a week ago and i agree...i've seen many gorgeous automotive creations, many that are faster and obviously better handling...but this thing is simply breathtaking from every angle.
Its a strangely simple look with curves and lines that make you instantly want to choose it over the normality of a ferrari or lambo.
Not meant as a supercar...its just a truly beautiful creation and i want one.
I totally understand this. When I was in college, I was driving to work one afternoon and saw, parked in front of a gas station with a "for sale" sign on its windshield, a car so beautiful I had to stop. It had no engine, and they were asking something like $7,000 for it, and this was in the 60s. It was an outrageous price, but it was so gorgeous, I wanted to buy it, if only to put it in the living room. The next day, the car was gone. The guy at the gas station told me some guy had bought it with the idea of putting a 327 Chevy engine in it. Turned out to be a BMW 507.

If you had bought that car back then you would have been milionair.... very easy in hindsight, so don't blame yourself. I hope for the guy who bought he didn't put that crap engine in it, would have greatly reduced the value of the car. Oh well, I'm sure some cars I can buy, or nearly buy if I beg people for money, turn out to be worth milions in the future.

There is something about Alfa Romeo cars that makes them so cool. Pretty much all Alfa owners love their cars.And I really mean they take care more about their cars than they do for their wifes.
I fell in love with Alfa Romeo since I saw 159 as a kid. Then I've got more interested in this Brand. I've got to tell you, it has some real history!
Alfa Romeo is possibly the most underrated car company in te world.
Alfa won the first world championship. Italians used to run when nobody used so.
Moreover, Alfa invented DOHC and common rail injection, and other "things"
The Giulia was a return to good solid reliable engineering.

i've spoken to some people who went to balocco for the press days (tried qv and diesel), they say it drives extremely well and it is living up to the promises on all levels except the usb port that isn't 100% perfectly placed. i'll try to get a test drive asap.

If it wasn't for the '08 plate on the car, you could easily think this car was a current model. Such an elegant and timeless shape. I wish Alfa would bring back a small coupe like the GTV and style it based on the 8c. The Giulia is nice and a good platform but their range badly needs filling out a bit!

One thing I must have to admit that Top Gear video grapher must have good photography background and he know what he is doing and he always have amazing views, colors and clouds.

Speaking as an alfa owner . Have an 156 2.0 jts from 2002 and i love it! The way it drives its amazing! Too bad the electrical parts are low quality and break down easily. Buy still worth driving!

+linkinmetalica The point is: You don't buy a 8C just for going fast, or any Alfa Romeo for that matter.
+linkinmetalica It is transaxle, 50:50 weight distribution with limited slip diff, I bet it handles much better than Clarkson claims. Even plain ARs have have very sharp and accurate steering. I know because I owned a few.

THIS ladies and gentlemen is how a car is properly presented.. i dont think any show will even remotely reach top gear's class. ever.
Many years ago I was working at the Goodwood festival of speed. Obviously, I took the opportunity to mooch about and look at all the beautiful machines. What stopped me in my tracks was an black 8C parked in the restricted carpark. I hadn't even heard of it. It was the most aweinspring and beautiful car I had, and have, ever seen. Maybe the Disco Volante could pip it. But I'm not sure.
From the roof to the C pillar and back, this reminds me of the Maserati Cambiocorsa. The front, however, is very much like the 33 Stradale, all of which makes this a bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful vehicle that I'd kill to own.
Some say that one of the purposes of art is to invoke emotions, so I guess alpha's can be considered art. Even if that emotion is extreme rage because it's broken down on the side of the road or in a mechanical shop more of the time than it has been actually working. So, instead of calling alpha's "shit" one could therefore call them "artistic."
