This car is one of the pinnacles of modern European sports car. It is gorgeous, sounds really cool, carbon tub, and totally impractical for anything but driving it on winding roads. I dream of having one.
They aren't unreliable, it's just the whole Alfa stigma they got many, many years ago. They put that same engine in numerous other, more daily-driveable Alfas and it was fine. I drive a 20 year old Alfa 156 (which was gifted to me and I doubt I ever would've went for it if I was buying a car myself) and it shocked me how good and reliable that car turned out to be. I don't even wanna go for anything newer as it does everything I ask from it, including long road trips. I was never an Alfa fanboy, but my experience has been so pleasant I do believe my next is also going to be an Alfa.
You're absolutely right. They aren't unreliable. The thing is that they do not take kindly to deferred or lacking maintenance and if you don't change the oil when you're supposed to etc. they will punish you. But that's your fault - not the car's.
Agree. I had a Giulietta QV with 6 speed manual (which has the same basic motor as the 4C), and it was the most reliable car I ever owned - a list that includes a Lexus, a couple of Fords, a Subaru, a Mazda MX5, and my current Mercedes C-Class. My only criticism was that that car was a little TOO accomplished - it was a great car to own and drive, but lacked the Alfa charm I was used to. I also had a 147 GTA for about 5 years and honestly, for most the time I had it that thing was also surprisingly reliable. I was regretfully in a pretty bad financial state when I bought that car, so for a number of years the car failed to get the maintenance it deserved, and yet it was till very realible. That only ended in my last year of ownship where the ECU failed and had to be replaced. Despite my inability to properly maintain the car I absolutely loved the thing with all my heart, and was thrilled that it was bought by a true Alfa lover who was willing to spend the money and time to bring it back to it's former glory. The only Alfa I owned that game me major issues was my first one (a 147 GTA Twin Spark with Selespeed gearbox) - and I think you can already understand why. I loved the car a bunch, but despite the car being in outstanding condition (and having very low mileage) when I got it that Selespeed eventually started to have issues, and when it did it was a bit of a disaster. But I dont really blame Alfa for that because that basic gearbox design has been used in everything from Maseratis, to Ferraris, to Lamborghinis to Aston Martins.
Unfortunately i was not so lucky with my Giulietta. Absolutely worst car ever when it comes to reliability. I had to replace the engine with ~70k km, 3 times i had to replace the door handle, the gear knob is also cutting my fingers (surface is slowly peeling off), button on the tailgate had to be replaced including the rear breaking light and many, many more issues. But i still love her, that's my "problem", cause driving is still top, direct and still top notch. And now i need to drive it even longer to get all the money that i put in back. But it will be my last new Italian car (also as there is nothing that would fit at the moment my needs) And yeah i have/had enough Italian cars (still owning a '77 Alfetta GTV 2000)
I've always appreciated Doug's honesty when reviewing cars, kinda like MKBHD. But I must say that i've also always found it amusing when he does it on a car that's for sale, he talks it down then talks it up all at the same time.
The excitement and enthusiasm Doug exhumes in his thorough reviews is what sets him apart from other reviewers. The 4C was never on my radar until today. Good job Mr. Demuro
On my 2nd 4C, won't discuss why. Both were and are excellent cars in terms of upkeep costs, and fun. I even like my Alpine with premium speakers and tiny subwoofer; like the car itself it simply sounds great and performs. Too bad, the 4c was judged too harshly initially, but this type of brilliance does not come along often, and I know I won't part with mine.
Here in Germany these sold quite well and at Car Meets here in the Alps we always got three 4C taking part (1x Coupe and 2x Spider) as well as one 8C Competizione. The 4C looks a lot like the 8C but they're very different otherwise but i'm glad they kept a lot of the Design of the 8C when making the 4C. I always wonder if they made the 4C because they were surprised by how fast the 8C sold out and how popular the Design was, anyone here can shed light on that? Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps
Yeah, I love the 4C and 8C design, it is quite unique and wish they are in pop culture like movies, TV series and video games, they are well designed and wished there were more of these ones that look like these, I wish they are still around and not get discontinued or cancelled, but would love to see a successor to these and not be an SUV as a successor, all and all, they are so good and well designed, head of our times, we do not deserve these beauties, but they need to be treated with respect, so yeah
As for roof quirks there was also a second full carbon fiber hard top option instead of the canvas but it was a $2000 option that didn't fit in the 4C's trunk.
Man your first review of this car broke my heart lol, this is one of my favorite cars of all time - blew my mind when I test drive, and I'm so glad you're revisiting it now.

I put on over 1,000 miles a month when I had mine. It was always a visceral experience driving it. You can hear the transmission go into gear when you put it in 1st. Doug forgot to mention the carbon fiber headlight housings. At the end of the day, it wasn’t for me. I think I got unlucky and ended up with the worst example ever made with an absurdly long dealership service history for a 4 year old car and the dealerships and customer service were an absolute nightmare to deal with on warranty work.
2015-2018ish (the full return to america) were rough years for alfa on the reliability department. SO MANY electrical gremlins. 2019+ they have sorted themselves out quite well

It had the wrong transmission. Everything else is fine, but a drivers car doesn't have flappy paddles. The accounting department overrode the engineering department unfortunately.
@@yungboicontigo9278 yes i get that, they also have racing slicks, etc. But those are race cars not cars built around the joy of driving, and even though race cars arent six speeds they are certainly not changing gears with a dodge dart automatic. Ive driven a few 4c’s. Transmission is the #1 reason the car failed. Based on looks, heritage, chassis, the 4c is an all time great. But not having a six speed doomed the car. Put a gated six speed in the 4c and it is a 100k car.
I had one for three years and drove it as daily driver (40k km) It is pretty reliable. I was spending less on 4C maintenance than my mom’s Mazda 3! No joke. It is reliable
The main issue I have with this car is that it looks cool on pictures and video but looks waaaaaaay better in person. In person it's insanely beautiful. Also on video it looks sort of tall for a super car, but in real life it's super low and flat.

When a quirky car gets a revisit from the man who's become Doug Quirksote, of course it's more positive. Surprised he didn't mention the manual steering again.
I used to daily a Giulietta QV, which is a hatchback with the same engine, and it was tunes to around 300 hp. It was always realiable, never missed a beat. Pretty good sound for a 4 cylinder as well.
I have a 4C from new. The issues I have had are: a hydraulic line fail in the clutch causing new clutch replacement. 8K repair. Then I had an oil cooler seal fail while the car was parked dumping 5 litres of oil everywhere. Tow to dealer plus repair another $1,500. My verdict. I LOVE THIS CAR. It drives like no other & I just love it. Never selling it.
I used to sell these a little while back! Couple fun facts … while in manual mode hold up the DNA selector to enter race mode. These were built at the Maserati plant in Modena Italy hence the Maserati emergency trunk release. To this day the 4C is amazing and fun and sorta cheap to maintain to be honest.
In the review he said you could get into first gear by pulling the right shift paddle. What if you pull the left shift paddle when you are in neutral, do you go into reverse?
Too bad Doug didn't mention that...I'm guessing "race mode" makes it so you can get the rear end loose while drifting around corners better? Or does it affect the shifting too? (Most people don't realize that shifting gears affects handling and that's the real reason why manuals are still sought after, although shifting with paddles has the same effect)
@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 Race mode is dynamic essentially without ANY driving aids it’s literally all you and don’t forget this car does not have a power steering system!

Thanks Doug for a honest review! I love mine, yellow 2017 coupe with the factory Akrapovic exhaust upgrade. Car has been awesome, long trips from north of Seattle to Vegas a few times no problems, great fuel mileage on the freeway, car is solid and dependable over 20,000 miles on it has not missed a beat. I call it a baby McLaren due to the carbon tub, its got that feel like my Mac but in a smaller style, it also attracts lots of attention which I was not expecting, more so than my Ferrari's actually. With the DNA setting in heavy stop and go traffic, I set it to the A and the shift/clutch engagement is softer and easier to drive if you are stuck in rush hour on a major freeway. Overall a great car, for the money.
I really thought more people would have bought this car. I was waiting for the used market to get flooded with them and I was going to buy one for a reasonable price but that never happened.
That door lock control panel is the same as on the first series Giulietta, the window controls in the center console are the same as on the left door of the Giulietta/MiTo, the air conditioning controls are the same as on the 1995 Punto/Fiat 600 2005 I love these things 😂❤️
I knew it before I saw the whole vid: complaining about the fact it had no manual transmission, and when Doug drives a convertible or targa, always the top goes up. But what a pleasure to watch his vids!
I suspect they placed the USB port in that pouch so that when you plug in your phone, you place it in the pouch on the right side of the passenger’s seat and the wires don’t hang above your legs. Brilliant solution!
The key design is inspired by the Scudetto-Grill, you forgot to mention it. Having a 4C Launch Edition in the family, I can tell you we never have had any problems in 30'000 km. The radio is totally different in the European models, much better integrated, but still kind of cheap and crap :). I also like the European front lighting of the coupé cooler and more agressive.
All though some of the compromises are pretty funny and all it is clearly to keep the weight and the sticker price down. The world needs more tiny and affordable mini sports cars like this!
It's surprising to see how much of this car is pulled from the parts shelves that made the MiTO and Giulietta. Speaks volumes about how well those two compact cars were put together!
Took an Alpha 4C on a 600 mile roadtrip through the Canadian backcountry. The car handled great, turned heads everywhere it went but the car definitely isn't comfortable. Back was hurting.. As Doug said, practicality is non existent. A Jaguar F-type convertible with the supercharged V6 is better imo.
I love the 4C. I remember the first time I saw one of these at a local car show. The presenter at the Alfa Romeo booth told me it had a carbon fiber chassis and I was in disbelief.
This is a review I was eagerly waiting for years. Although it's sad Doug missed out talking about the original 4C from 2013, with the controversial "honeycomb" headlights that everyone hated at the time. That one never came to North America, instead they brought the revised headlights first shown on the Spider in 2014. I agree the revised headlights look better, but I believe the few European models with the original honeycomb lights will be more collectible in the future.

There's a stage 3 now making 350hp, which strengthens my point.
But it will be my last new Italian car (also as there is nothing that would fit at the moment my needs)
And yeah i have/had enough Italian cars (still owning a '77 Alfetta GTV 2000)

That's such an Alfa solution.
Lol classic alfa

I used to have a 2016 4C Coupe with every option. I learned some stuff watching this video lol. I can confirm you get a lot of attention driving this around town.

Why get an Alpha Romero 4C coupe over a Tesla Roadster?

Also on video it looks sort of tall for a super car, but in real life it's super low and flat.
100% correct. This car so much lower and wider looking in person. Kind of strange how it never translates to the video or pictures.
Doug you missed the Race mode (keep dna switch pushed in D for a few seconds when already in D). You also missed launch control 😉
Worked for Alfa at the time of its launch and attended the dealers launch at Balocco track in 🇮🇹. Aside from driving it there, was also lucky enough to passenger with Nicola Larini at the wheel! Wow!!!
Small, light weight, agile ... I can imagine this as daily car adn a good one. You parks and it shine over the boring stuff of the car lot. Very lucky owner, nice car. Always a smile when you take.
I have a black coupe of the same year. I am here to confirm that it is indeed awesome, although it can be punishing at times. Most people will get tired of it after a few weeks but for those who like rawness, it's an absolute joy.
What about ground clearance (potholes, speed bumps, construction zones etc.?)
@@toyotahontas9296 The ground clearance is low but not obscene. I rarely scrap unless it is a steep incline like a driveway.
As for potholes, I'm not going to sugar coat it. If you hit a bad pothole fast enough it feels almost like you got your bell rung lol. So yeah, the suspension is STIFF. To be fair, I have not had a tire break or a bent wheel, though to be fair I am on aftermarket wheels and the tire sidewall is not too small.

@@assassinforce5637 But it has paddle shifters, which is a good compromise between automatic and manual. I love seeing these on the road. Gives off real supercar aura
And they sound amazing
Darn it Doug now these things are going to skyrocket in price once people realize you cant buy them new anymore. :(
You reviewed a lot of cars and I watched every single video of yours in the last 2 years but this might be one of my favorite cars
@@bolt5564 No you can’t you need to press R , I used to try to put it in reverse that way but it wouldn’t work.

Edit: stage 3 with supporting bolt ons now makes 350hp!
320hp is a sports car, not supercar level.
@@lillexus5589 at the weight, it is a super car
@@lillexus5589 This car stock has a better power to weight ratio than most sports cars. Now add 80 more hp, that only increases the ratio.
There's a stage 3 now making 350hp, which strengthens my point. There are plenty of cars that claim huge power figures, but the real test of a car’s performance potential is its power to weight ratio.
Additionally there is much more to factor in when discussing supercars than just hp. That's too surface level.
@@Dwadedragon still doesn't make this Alfa a supercar. Catherhams neither, or Donkervoorts.
@@lillexus5589 if you read my comment I said that hp alone doesn't determine what is or isn't a supercar.
Many additional factors are considered.
The definition of what is a supercar is vague, so there's really no point arguing. But if you're using hp to disqualify vehicles, you're wrong
Can’t believe he didn’t mention the cool headlights the US-spec model didn’t get
The US got better headlights. The European spec car had bug-eyed headlights.
@@arion9696 only in coupe had those bug-eyed lights and not all coupes have those lights, they changed them to optional in 2014, so you could choose from 2 light types.
The handling on this car is why I fell in love with it, it's so responsive.
Why is the "aftermarket" radio some issue? Probably works and sounds better than most OEM radios. That said...I would call that a feature and not a problem. Our Alfa 75 had some "aftermarket" radio too and it was totally fine! One of the best cars we ever owned: great fun to drive and actually really reliable. We have great memories of that car: It saved the life of my wife and son in a terrible crash and turned out to be way stronger than we expected.
