    So glad you finally reviewed this blade! This is my number one favorite “jack of all trades” knife for hybrid outdoor/self defense/camping use. Unlike most other “master of none” designs, I find the Survivalist is aptly named because it truly punches above its weight in all categories. For price, the durability, reliability and performance is without compare among my other Cold Steeles’, Condors’, and Kabars’. Bar-none. I belt carry it in a two knife system with the drop forged hunter where I have the smaller knife’s sheath attached over the larger blade’s at the bottom. It looks REALLY good and it’s an incredibly adept outdoor sporting combo.

    I have this knife, a standard Ka-Bar, an Ontario SP10, & some others. This is by far the best knife I own. I don't think you can find a better knife for the cost. I wish Cold Steel would make similar handle upgrades to The Drop Forged Hunter, & completely redesign the Drop Forged Bowie, such that it's an actual Bowie with a decent grippy handle, rather than the current short handle w/ fake stag scales, & zero retention to prevent it from slipping out of your hand.

    You have inspired me in so many ways .
    You have great recommendations to finding a good Bowie knife .
    You inspire me to do better knife videos ( especially the ones I actually use haha - some I just buy for collecting purposes ).
    Like this beauty by Cold Steel .
    I will most definitely be using !!
    I even bought a custom Kydex sheath for it ( not that there was anything wrong with the sheath that came along with the knife - I just wanted to upgrade ).
    Thanks for showing the proper way to make a knife video .

    For me 52100 is the regular carbon steel that performs like super steel. You can get a great edge, a great edge retention and a very good strength. It’s not a stainless steel but it’s more rust resistant than 1095 and with that coating ... The best part of this knife seems to be that, like you said, they did not go for the overkill profile. I think you have a winner. Very informative video, as usual. Thanks.

    I have had mine for over a year. I. Like it . it's the right size for all day carry in the woods great for the big camp knife chores. Pared with a good saw like a silky and a smaller knife for fine work it covers most of what I need.
    Down sides. Here in Wisconsin we have to deal with the cold as well and that is when the Handel gets uncomfortable if the Handel could be thinned down and full wood or micarta be used instead I would have no complaints.

    Don't hit it with a rock. It's not recommended, anyway, but you might have to do so in sn emergency. I prefer the Schrade SCHF2SM. It's a solid piece of 1070 steel, with a hollow handle bored into the grip. It's less prone to shattering if abused.

    I have had the original silver over black release with no scales for a few years, & I like the feel with my fingers falling into the troughs on either side (depending upon grip). I put some sticky tennis racket tape over the handle for thermal protection. If spudge gets under it, I just remove, clean & re-apply. I wish that you had removed the scales to reveal the cross profile of the forging. I am wondering if the forging dies got modified or not. Regards, Barry from Western Mass.

    I have this knife, and the handle scales are better than they look. I tested them out wet, and they have better grip than a wet Ka-Bar with the Kraton rubber. The circumference of the handle is admittedly a bit small. It's doable with gloves. But, if I was going to use this a lot without gloves, I'd probably add some circumference with grip tape or heat shrink grip.

I know you did an old review on it and these two are in the same category with 8" blades and similar shape. I've had the SP6 since you first did that review and it is a tough blade designed for damage. I also have a Recon Scout that I got back in 2005 that just sits in a box now as I never really used it much. Since I haven't had the pleasure of handling one yet I get to ask you this question...do you think using a " ranger band" or just a length of appropriate diameter bicycle innertube slid over the handle would help mitigate any issues with the handle?

    • @johnnyshanksalot8358

      It's pretty simple, just get a dremel and a bucket of water and don't cut/grind for more than a second at a time without cooling it back down in the bucket. I cut Emerson waves into my folders all the time, if it doesn't get hot it'll be fine. On the flip side, if you just cut right through and don't cool it off, you're basically making good steels into 420j2.

      I have this knife and the Hunter as well. I really like the handle scales of the Survivalist and wish they put them on the Hunter. When chopping it seems to make a funny ringing/rattling noise but doesn't seem to punish the hand more than any knife but I haven't wailed on anything with it too wildly. I think since there's so much beef in the handle it absorbs vibrations decently. It's a really cool knife.

    • @Kishqui
      @Kishqui 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've only used this knife with the handle scales on and for light de-limbing of a couple trees that were too close to a window. I felt next to no shock and the scales fill the palm very well. This is a nice knife!

      If you must chop with it, use a two finger pinch and use the lanyard to keep it from escaping. You'll get 2x the chopping power as opposed to a hammer/traditional grip.

    • @DL-ij7tf
      @DL-ij7tf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the knife out just the other day and did some chopping with it, didn't really notice the ringing sound like I'd mentioned, must've depended on the thing being chopped. It's a decent chopper but it's full flat ground so the blade is a little lighter than many dedicated beastly choppers. A decent mix of large strong woods knife and a fighting knife. It is a Bowie, after all. Vibrations seemed insignificant as previously stated.

    • @jessr.3763

      I have both this one and an Esee Laser strike; 52100 steel on this knife is superior to Esee’s 1095 in terms of steel characteristics,, however Esee does cover their knives for life if it were to ever fail, so that’s a consideration.

    • @darthblade2016

      Ur right, he didn't mention the sheathe, which he usually does. However, it was in frame at one point and looked exactly like every other Cold Steel Secure-X sheath i have seen and used. Checking the knife listing will show if it is or not. If it is the same, then the nylon loop can be removed and is usually able to be attached without taking ur belt off (snap and velcro combo usually). I have seen others talk about the Tek Loks in other videos and from what i have heard, they are slightly off, so Tek Loks don't work. Hope that helps man!
