    The swept-back handle is designed for Sabre grip. That's why the drop point survival has a straight handle it's more of a do all knife. Whereas the drop point Bowie is designed to be a fighter. The drop point Bowie is for SNAP cuts where you use the saver grip instead of a hammer grip.

    • @Jimislash
      @Jimislash  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That makes sense, but it's still uncomfortable for snap cuts.

    Good to hear before buying it. I have seen historic Bowie blades where the handle is in a similar angle, but was sceptic anyway.
    Maybe if you hold the handle only with 3 fingers, like you often see with bushcraft guys. They often chop with this flicking motion.
    I love my Drop Forged Survivalist! The steel holds an edge like nothing before, the handle, although it looked/feeled a little short at the beginning (because of the pommel), I now love the haptics of the knife. I had to dig, chop and baton with it on two fatwood hunts I did last Friday and Saturday. The edge didn't suffer any damage, after a little stropping it was like new. The tip held up sendsational to prying. The coating only needed some water and a wipedown, only some minor scratches on the coating, nothing to write home about.
    The only knife I have that held up so brilliant is my good old Trail Master in Carbon V. Man, this knife is a real beast, too!
    Ok, the Puma Automesser I was issued at the Bundeswehr is as sturdy as this two Cold Steel blades are.

    I have the survivalist (my first real “survival blade”), the drop forged hunter (my favorite bush crafting knife), and the original 6 inch bladed drop forged bowie (which found to be more of a “shank” than a large enough woods knife). Overall, I find the curved handles on the drop forged bowies more ergonomic than the models with straight handles. The way it give the blade forward sweep in hand makes it excellent for tactical application as the blade sweeps forward with the wrist held in a more natural position than with straight handled blades. That finger choil also makes it easier to choke up for finer work, and the 9.5 inch bladed bowie is also longer than the survivalist for easier use in brush clearing and fire prep, like battoning wood. I got it because I wanted the functionality of the survivalist, with the ergonomics of the smaller 6 inch drop forged Bowie. As for chopping, add a wrist lanyard and that handle sweep makes it a great chopper. I pair it with the DF hunter, and those who blades serve pretty much any need I can have for a knife in the bush or campsite.

    I just found this video and TOTALLY AGREE WITH ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING YOU SAID. I own both the Drop Forged Bowie and the Survivalist and MUCH prefer the Survivalist. The Bowie has a short and VERY awkward handle on it. I can say that I actually HATE the handle on the Bowie (I don’t have a Cold Steel sponsorship). The handle on the Survivalist is far superior. The ONLY thing the Bowie MIGHT be good for is wild boar hunting and if I ever do that, I’ll bring a spear not a knife. Mine just sits in a drawer now.

    Try it with a Saber grip and not a hammer grip. It'll do more damage that way than the survivalist if you smack a bad guy, because the blade will present at an angle kinda almost like a kukri.

    Cold Steel has been my favorite brand of knives since the 90's. That Drop Forged Bowie looks solid AF. Cuts, and stabs like a beast. I can see the issue you're having with the handle; it's geometry is off and the shape may actually transmit more energy towards the hand and wrist. But I'm not a physics guy and been drinking Jamo before watching this vid. Is Cold Steel still using that sheath material that dulls a knife? Haha meat boot! 🤘😆

    The handle looks like it’s got a decent shape for chopping, but it’s too short.
    To make it a really good chopper, you could grab the handle towards the back and that curve would make it just as devastating as a khukuri because of the curve… but it’s still kinda short. If I designed the blade I would’ve made the handle 5.5 inches or maybe even 6 to give that extra real estate for the hand.

    I got one a couple weeks ago. I already owned the older model drop forged bowie with no scales and old style paint. I first thought it was the same knife, just added scales and newer paint but this model has a longer and a little wider blade. I haven't had a chance to use the new one, but I agree with you on the grip. It don't feel like it would be comfortable for chopping. I Still really like it alot though. Still a very usable knife. I own all of the drop forged series except the wasp and my favorite is still also the survivalist. I own 3 of them 1 old style without scales and 2 of the newer ones. For the price they were last year it was a no brainer. The hunter in that series is also a very usable knife.

      @@acr4809 it would be nice to have a choice of stainless or a high carbon steel. I have the Aus 8 full serrated version and it's definitely no slouch. The Cryo quench on the Aus 8 when done well gives the steel similar properties to a high carbon steel. This includes edge retention but has the added benefits of low maintenance on the blade. This kind of treatment has been done well on a lot of cold steel knives (kobun for instance) and even on the sog seal pup. Both knives are very well acclaimed for that reason. Maybe in future editions they will give us a high carbon version or maybe even in a well done D2 steel.

    I think you hit it on the head when you mentioned the curved grip. This knife has a kukri style handle on a Bowie style blade, and that doesn't work. The kukri works because it concentrates force over a small cutting area because of the curved blade. Instead, with this knife the point of impact is spread out over a larger area due to the Bowie's full flat grind blade shape. This dilutes the force generated by the curved handle over a larger area of the balde and results in the jarring felt upon striking. By contrast, the Demko Rotten 'Nanner concentrates the chopping force over a MUCH smaller area.

  • @knottheory79220

    Not that I'm an expert on Bowies, but a lot of historical ones had either a very neutral handle (the coffin shaped being the most famous if not necessarily the most common, though a very simple, slender handle was also common) or they had a much gentler angle on the saber style handle. The BRKT Bowies, when they're available, use a Moran style handle or have that as an option and it doesn't have that angle. It's not straight, but it's a lot gentler curving than this.
    The other problem is I don't see how this design is supposed to lend itself to a full handle that has a good design in the dimension that crosses your grip.
    This isn't a bad idea for a knife, but they should have done a neutral handle or a Moran style and I'd have gone with micarta scales. Real Micarta > Fake Stag, and that way you could contour it and give it good ergonomics.
    My local hobos deserve better.

    Lynn likes indigenous style blades and handles from other cultures!!! This handle doesn't look like it belongs on a bowie!!! I think people will struggle if they hold it like a westerner!!! Kinda like how there's a disconnect with machetes parang and kukri, and people that love them in the west have to relearn how to use the tool like an Eastern to be effective!!!

    You’re supposed to hold that style of handle in a saber grip, not a hammer grip like you’re doing

      @@Jimislash I'm not sure that it's only good for self defense in that grip, but it's to facilitate wrist action on your cuts etc. But I actually have one of these on the way so I'll have a better sense of it in a few days, and I will let you know if I come up with anything useful.

      @@Jimislash I have larger, meaty hands and didn't find it too thin personally. I did wrap it in paracord after awhile just to see what it felt like and that might help you get a better grip. It's a shame the handle is not ergonomic for what it looks like it was designed for, chopping. And being built into the design like that, you are stuck with that angle. I love a Bowie blade, but I'm going to pass on that one. Thanks for being honest, and not some shill who will never say anything bad about their sponsors.

      @Fardawg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it is. My hands are large, probably around Jimmy's size, and it is fine for me. Just don't use it like a damn hammer but grip it in a way that takes into account the saber grip design.

  • @timcook2524

    I love the look but after seeing your review I'm starting to think Cold Steel needs to stay out of the bowie business. At least not at what they are charging for them. I like the looks of all of them but quality has been subpar. At least that one is sharp. I'm my stop in over at Lonestar after a trip to Fuzzy Tacos soon and check it out and give it a chance.

      Nothing wrong with the Bowie at all. It is meant to work with a saber grip. You have to take the handle design into account when chopping.
