Congratulations! I recently discovered your channel with the sketch video, I am an industrial design student and I think a YTchannel like yours is really helpful. Can’t wait for your videos from AJ&Smart!
Hey! That looks so amazing! I'm a first year product designer and have just made my portfolio, but I would love to know what makes a portfolio stand out from the crowd (other than great work ofc) Thanks for showing your work so openly it's great!
Hi Jacob! It would be great if you could ask some of them what their background is and what steps they made that lead them on to work at AJ&Smart. Thanks!
dude!! you're just so intimidating that I don't wanna ask my stupid question but here goes nothing ... i just wanted to know how one keeps an open perspective while working on a project where they don't really like the idea but have to work on it because that's what the client liked
I’m just entering into a ba in graphics and media in September, I’m aspiring for the UX designer title. What are some key pointers you would give someone entering into the whole product/ux/ui design fields?
AJ & Smart are actually a UX design firm mostly (I should have mentioned that) so they don't really use CAD, but I can assure in the Industrial Designed it is used a lot. :)
😂 I have two questions what were some of the struggles that their business went through up to the point they are at now and what design corporations or companies are looking for in young designers. I thinks these would be the most beneficial for me as I am stuck between taking the path of my own business or joining one. 😂😂🤙 thanks Myrin
Hey Jacob, congratulations on the internship! :) I have a couple of questions if that is ok: 1) The perception of many people is that most design happens in Western countries while manufacturing is done in Asia. Is this true or is there a need for designers in places such as South East Asia as well as Europe? and 2) The use of IT has revolutionised design. Do you think that a desiger's jobs will increasingly involve working from home in the future or do you think that design will continue to be a collaborative task in an office environment? Thanks very much!
How busy do people in Aj and smart get? Do they have time for them selves? Do they have to work for more than half the day? Do you have to be really focused? And how is the environment there? Is it stressful sometimes? How much?
What are the deadlines for a task assigned to a fresh grad ? Also what are the requirements for a junior graphic designer whose just starting out after graduating?
I barely know you but ahhh im so happy for you! Anyway for the q&a my question is : how do important companies such as Google or Adidas pick the designers they want to have working for them? Is it purely portfolio based or does your education play a role in the selection of candidates? (for example does studying in a renown design school like RISD help at all?)
Hey.... Cheers from India! First of all.. love your videos! they just super awesome! Both Myrin and AJ&Smart. My question is, Do Industrial and Product Designers need a masters degree to get into a good product design firm?
+Tanishq Halder Hey from New York! That's a tricky question. 😆 It depends what you consider a good product design firm and what you mean by "getting into" it, for what position, full time, part time, intern, freelance.. So many options! Each company has certain requirements for qualifications. So it really depends! I would really look ask yourself what position specifically you're aiming for, what strengths, passions and qualifications you may have. Definitely look into each company website or on their LinkedIn for more details about various positions. Are you currently in college right now?
Can you pls ask about how top people there maintain and keep their motivation and discipline to keep designing in order to get there they are now and sticking w it throughout their career
Since we’re asking questions I’ve been wondering is it possible to get a start in product design through a graphic design degree the reason I ask is it’s the only real option of study for me due to my location, course availability and cost. coupled with a certification of Autodesk fusion 360 and 25 years of fiberglass production experience. your opinion on whether it’s worthwhile would mean a lot thanks for the videos good luck on your adventure I hope it opens even more doors for you in the future
I think you can definitely teach yourself product design. Back in New Zealand, I know a successful product designer who never went to university. He just taught himself how to use Solidworks and started his own design firm and learned as he went.
Question to aj&smart: how do you feel about people without degrees? Also how does aj&smart react when someone has an idea that’s new to the business I.e do you like change.
I've mentioned these questions as i am a Contract Mechanical Design Engineer, and I use Autodesk Inventor and Solidworks, and getting use to Fusion 360 and that's where i cam across your channel.
Don't have to worry much when it comes to your entrance exams. Entrance exams generally only test out your aptitude for design. Visual pattern recognition, and depending on your exams your drawing skills can come into play too. Takes quite a bit of general knowledge too. Good luck :)
WOW !! I have a small suggestion Why don't you check out the Mercedes Benz designers They not only make cars but also products like bags bicycles cups watches at and maybe film it
Jeffrey Lee When you get out of school, studio’s are looking out to your portfolio and internship experience. The high grades does not matter at all, you are studying for yourself, and what you are learning will shape your thinking and design so of course, high grades are a good thing but at the end the most important is to show what you learned during those years of studies through your portfolio. Internships are also reallynimportant because you can learn so much in a short time, and understand more about what you like or not, also it helpes you to create a network which is really important and can help you later on, like finding a job.
SO GREAT TO HAVE YOU WITH US JACOB!
AJ&Smart hope I get an internship like this one day
AJ&Smart looks so fun to work for!

I’m just entering into a ba in graphics and media in September, I’m aspiring for the UX designer title. What are some key pointers you would give someone entering into the whole product/ux/ui design fields?
Jacob I love the video! Can you ask how necessary CAD will become in the next few years
AJ & Smart are actually a UX design firm mostly (I should have mentioned that) so they don't really use CAD, but I can assure in the Industrial Designed it is used a lot. :)
Thanks so much!
Hey can you suggest some tips for portfolio what to include and how we can make it more effective?
😂 I have two questions what were some of the struggles that their business went through up to the point they are at now and what design corporations or companies are looking for in young designers.

Great questions
really great to see this! do they offer internships quite regularly?
Hey Jacob, congratulations on the internship! :) I have a couple of questions if that is ok: 1) The perception of many people is that most design happens in Western countries while manufacturing is done in Asia. Looks like you're having a blast.
How busy do people in Aj and smart get? Do they have time for them selves? Do they have to work for more than half the day? Do you have to be really focused? And how is the environment there? Is it stressful sometimes? How much?
Question what kinds of designing projects do they do with google?
What are the deadlines for a task assigned to a fresh grad ? Also what are the requirements for a junior graphic designer whose just starting out after graduating?
how did they start?
Hi Jacob! Do AJ&Smart accepting 3-6 Month internships too? or just 6 weeks? Would love to head/see the answer :D
I hope you enjoyed.
In general, how many prototypes are rejected for a product?
What are the skills/ values design firms look for while selecting people? Do people get enough creative freedom once they begin working?
I barely know you but ahhh im so happy for you! Anyway for the q&a my question is : how do important companies such as Google or Adidas pick the designers they want to have working for them? how far the difference between skill that we learned at university and skill that industry using?
Can you pls ask about how top people there maintain and keep their motivation and discipline to keep designing in order to get there they are now and sticking w it throughout their career

Congrats
i would like to know what is you opinion and advise you would give to someone that calles himself : Starving Artist
What do firms like AJS look for while hiring a design student ?
Thank you

Great question

my LinkedIn is: HTTP://UK.LINKEDIN.COM/PUB/JAMIE-WICKS/79/21/367
How was the beggining of AJ&Smart?
WOOOOPPP!!!
Auf was achtet ihr bei Portfolios?
What are you looking for in a portfolio?
Will a video portfolio help to increase my employability?
Yeah, it will show your personality. My TH-cam channel is kind of like my video portfolio and it is working wonders. :)
Do firms like these hire fresh students from India?
Hey I am a student currently preparing for my design entrance
My question is what are the exact skills an industrial designer must learn
Don't have to worry much when it comes to your entrance exams. Entrance exams generally only test out your aptitude for design. Visual pattern recognition, and depending on your exams your drawing skills can come into play too. Takes quite a bit of general knowledge too. Good luck :)
Are you now graduated?
Not yet, unfortunately. Still another year and a half to go. :(
WOW !! I have a small suggestion
Why don't you check out the Mercedes Benz designers
They not only make cars but also products like bags bicycles cups watches at and maybe film it
Ha, maybe. Their headquarters are just across the river from us.
Is having internship or working experience more important than high marks on your degree?
Probably. At the end of the day, it is your portfolio that matters. I think companies will hire you as a designer only if they like your portfolio.
