    Jacob, I applaud your decision. Pulling out of design school when you know this is the field for you is a very tough decision. I Quit design school at the end of my third year for two reasons, 1: design school is much too expensive! And 2: I was offered a job as an industrial designer but it required me to move out of state. THat was not an easy decision to make but my logic behind the decision was that I can always go back to school but you cannot always find work in ID. I have been working as a professional Industrial designer for 6+ years without the "piece of paper". NOt having a degree does hold me back from some positions but most of the time, studios/companies are more focused on my body of work and less on the degree. I love that you made this video as there are some great designers I know that were not able to finish because of money or other issues that came up. I also know plenty of designers with their degree that are the worst. So do what you feel is right and it will workout as long as you stay in it. Best of luck to you sir!

    So happy to see you doing this, man. I spent four long years getting my industrial design BTech degree. I DID learn a lot and I don't totally regret it, however... I learned more in the first 6 months in my first job than I had in my whole university career! On top of that, amazing educational channels like The Futur and work experience in different environments has allowed me to get to where I am today as a head of department. Wishing you all the best :)

    • @myrinj
      @myrinj  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man. Yeah, I really do think this is a good decision and it is comments like this that confirm that. Thanks. Question. What is the one skill that you found most helpful to get where you are today?

    • @davidrbrtsn
      @davidrbrtsn 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Myrin My skill at presenting is what contributed the most to my success at first. This started with delivering beautiful renders and smart presentation decks.
      The most important skill of all that I found toughest to develop is my skill at working collaboratively with a client and my team to develop a strategy that addresses business goals... Basically a combination of consultantcy, creative and leadership skills. Hope this helps and good luck :)

I’ve been struggling with the concept of school myself, and due to health issues I’ve had so many interruptions that I’m not done yet... I wish you all the best of luck in your new path in life! I personally didn't go to uni and went straight into a job (working for my father's industrial design consultancy). 6 years later and I've learnt so much! So much more than if I would of invested my time going to uni.
    I started out on general admin before progressing into graphic design before cutting my teeth into 3D CAD, all within a two year span teaching myself the necessary skills along the way. Self teaching yourself can be scary but in the end it is really satisfying! It's incredible to look back at how far you have come and it all be off your own back!
    If you ever are in need of some 3D CAD advice/tips etc. (I use Solidworks, Creo, Inventor and a little NX) I would be more than happy to help share the knowledge! :)
    Keep up the great videos!

    • @myrinj
      @myrinj  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude, that is so encouraging to hear. Thanks.
      I am thinking of putting together a video about all websites and content you can use to teach yourself product design. Can you recommend any sites that you found helpful while teaching yourself?

    • @Dukeson57
      @Dukeson57 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I predominantly used TH-cam to be perfectly honest! It's still how I learn new tools to this day. Sometime's I'll go to the CAD providers website - for example the Solidworks website (www.solidworks.com/sw/resources/solidworks-tutorials.htm) has some good videos of how to do specific things. Other places include GrabCAD (grabcad.com/tutorials) or Lynda.com (www.lynda.com/).
      Understanding how to use a particular tools is obviously important, but I believe you should also know the correct way of setting up a model or assembly and the methodology behind it. When starting out it isn't too important how you set it out it but as you progress and get better it should become more of a habit as it makes your life a lot easier down the line - trust me! :) I don't know of anywhere in particular you can learn that sort of stuff, I sort of picked it up over the years talking to experts etc. But if you want to know more then just let me know!

      Hi Jordan, Yeah, I 100% agree with you. The internet is changing the way we learn a lot and universities don't seem to realize that.
      I'm thinking of making a video about all the website and content you can use to teach yourself Industrial Design. Are there any websites that you recommend?

    • @jordannull454
      @jordannull454 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Myrin! Sorry for the late response.
      I have tons of suggestions!
      First and foremost, we know that to be a good designer and communicator, you have to have a solid foundation in drawing fundamentals, and in my opinion the best place to start is drawabox.com/
      From there, you can move onto things like the industrial design course on www.learnsquared.com/ (there's also a fusion360 class, but in my opinion your learn fusion360 video takes care of all a beginner's needs).
      There is an edx course from delft which I feel is very important for someone like me who can't go to an actual design school www.edx.org/course/product-design-the-delft-design-approach
      I have other ideas and suggestions as well, would you mind if DM you on instagram?

    • @myrinj
      @myrinj  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think so. And that is true if everything goes to custard I can always go back to uni.

  • @connor2736
    @connor2736 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've thought about this a lot as well. But what ultimately led me to stay at uni was studio. how are you going planning to replicate studio? Studio let's you do long projects with a professional helping you out along the way. It seems like working with these professionals will only happen in short bursts, where as some design projects require weeks to execute properly. Interested in what you have to say on this

    • @myrinj
      @myrinj  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question and this is the exact thing that gave me the most pause.
      The way I plan to solve this is through internships and working one on one with designers for longer periods. Because I have a good social media presence I can bring a lot to a company as an intern because, while I am working for them I will be making videos which will boost their profile. The main thing that made AJ&Smart took me on as an intern was because of my TH-cam channel.
      Anyway, that is my hope. I think it can work, but I guess we will see. :)

  • @alexeyvolin4263
    @alexeyvolin4263 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I was thinking about quitting uni so much, but I don't think this is a good idea. Being on an internship you simply realize how much more you get from practical work, that it's simple to make a decision to leave course. But I wouldn't risk it. Unlike Jacob, I don't think any of us have a real publicity and degree is simply a must have in our age. I hate it so much, but I will finish uni first, thanks God there's just a year left

    • @myrinj

  • @Johnisbetter-dw3fi
    @Johnisbetter-dw3fi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Don't forget, one of the main benefits that you get from school is the networking. Many of your fellow classmates will continue on to become industrial designers. They will help you get employment in the future. This is pretty important to securing employment for yourself. If you don't go to university, you won't have that. Completely separate from that, another thing is that a lot of these professionals you hope to interview have worked hard to develop their skills. They may not necessarily be willing to just give this stuff away for free under the thinly veiled guise of "giving back". I would think of another way to deliver value to them that is equivalent to the value you are getting from their tutorials. This will be critical to the success of your project. I wish you the best of luck. You are taken a path less trodden, which will be harder, but potentially more rewarding.

    Congratulations, I think this is a smart move! I hope that other students from various professions will try to follow this model. As a student who just graduated highschool, I've thought a lot about going to college and, while I've concluded that it's still a good fit for me, I can't say that's because I believe that's what will teach me what I need to do for industry. Infact, in the age of internet education, you can easily get a free education that rivals or even exceeds that of a top University. The main problem I see now, which I hope will change, is many employers won't even consider you without a college degree. Also, it takes a certain type of person to have the motivation to learn on their own. But my hope is eventually, employers will change their tune, and education will become more accessible to everyone, in large part due to platforms like TH-cam, Udacity, edX, Lynda.com, skillshare, etc

    • @myrinj

    OKAY SO YES THIS IS WONDERFUL AND I REALLY WISH THE BEST FOR YOU AND I SO LOOK FORWARD TO SEE YOU GO FAR AND I WILL BE HERE TO GO WITH YOU VIA TH-cam HERE IN SYDNEY. A few questions;
    You gained a connection of making videos sort of in collaboration with your uni, how did that play into your decision and will you be connected with them any more?
    Also any more content from Berlin! Sounded amazing!
    I really appreciate all your content and I am learning so much and I look forward to learning more with you!
    Do you have ideas of who you want to collaborate with? What does the rest of the year look like for you? Although I imagine that last question will be answered in your next video..

      To answer your first question. I stop making videos with my university earlier this year as they ended up treating me a bit poorly and I was getting better offers.
      And yes, I will be doing some more collaboration with AJ&Smart in the future.
      And yes, all will be revealed about what is happening for the rest of the year in my next video. :) Keep watching. :)

      Uni takes about 40 hours of work a week to do well. It is basically like having a full-time job. If there were more hours in the day I would do both, but to truly focus on one I had to give up the other. Also, yeah it is rather expensive.

    Design Schools can possibly confine your ideas to their ideology. Defining someone's artwork with grades based on their constraints will force you to think like their ways of tackling ideas. Similarly can be applied to Product/Industrial Design.Your ideas can only be expanded as wide as the room can be. I say get out of that room!

      Totally agree!
      Ha, this kind of sounds like the beginning of an inspirational speech. :) YEAH! I will break out of that room! All da way! All da way! :)
      Thanks, that really does mean a lot. :)

    Other posters have commented on this, but studio and critique is a MAJOR reason why almost every working professional has a degree in design. Sure, you can get internships here and there, but those internships will stop at the shores of New Zealand.. You're never going to fully develop work from A-B in an internship. When it comes to full time work, they're going to pick the person with the degree, because chances are, they can do the same things you can and stuck out the school.
    Internships also don't give you a lot of time to make errors in a studio, so you can't do trial and error with foam 40 times until you get it right, and painting etc etc.
    Design school shows employers that you can work to solve a problem and create new things from point A-B, and how you overcame obstacles, how you decided to use a specific design etc.
    Could it work out in the long run? Sure, you're still young, so having parents is a good thing, but the real world is typically much more stark, and unless you plan on staying IN your country, those internships won't get you too far. Especially if you go to countries with real competition for industrial design, I.E Germany, Sweden, Holland, U.S. No degree=application in the trash.

    I'm curious, do you think this is an endeavor someone that hasn't attended uni for at least a 1+ years would be capable of pursuing? I think understanding the fundamentals to design is incredibly important and other's that haven't attended uni and see this video might not gain those fundamentals if they think they can learn ID without that first year of uni to really cement what design is. Your thoughts?

      Unless you have something bigger to go to I would say stay in design school. If I didn't have my channel and some big opportunities that are happening later this year ;-) I don't think I would have left design school. Even saying all that it is still a risky decision for me and will take a lot of hard work to pull off. :-/

      Definitely I've recently started my journey into product licensing. I believe it would be a great side hustle for you. It is definitely not meant to be a full time job right away but, can become one. It does require some legal protection and small investment. It is very affordable and practical once understand the process. I'll link an article to the company I've learned from, the big name founder is Stephen Key. I recommend picking up his book: One Simple Idea and check out their TH-cam @ InventRightTV
      www.inventright.com/help/blog/what-is-licensing
      Hopes this provides some good information for you. Ask question if you need more.

    • @myrinj

      Last year my lecturer told us that a company cares more about your portfolio than they do about your marks at uni. I think if you can build up a killer portfolio and do a ton of networking you should be good. Anyway well, that is my hope. :)

    • @MJKDESIGNer
      @MJKDESIGNer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some companies are a bit elitist about the college you go to also... like most of the car designers come from CCS and other top colleges. But you are correct it is about your portfolio. I would try and get your college to do some kind of partnership/sponsorship on your projects so you get your BA at the end of the x amount of years. Just a thought. Good luck.

    Design school is already DIY education. But you'll miss out on the educational purpose of tight deadlines and countless overnighters. The time management skills you learn throughout design school is way more valuable to a company than the tricks and tips here on TH-cam because well... Anybody can learn those on TH-cam but what sets you apart as a graduate is they know you've been through Hell. I wish you the best for what's next! But I wouldn't recommend anyone here to quit design school.

    • @myrinj
      @myrinj  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I 100% agree with you. And that is why I am going to be putting in place a lot of self-imposed deadlines to force myself to keep learning good time management and working long hours.
      I'm going to give this a good go, but at the end of the day if it doesn't work out I will be back at uni.
