  • A cracked windshield is no good! Unfortunately, a new Porsche OEM windshield costs about $1200-$1500 for a Porsche 911. I decided to replace my 2010 Porsche 911 Carrera S (997.2) windshield with an aftermarket one made by Fuyao (FY) for $450 installed using an OEM seal. Hear my thoughts on the quality of the glass and check out the installation! In the Bay Area and need to find a good glass shop? Big shout out to Hi-Tech Auto Glass in Redwood City, CA for doing an amazing job: www.yelp.com/b...

      Kevin Emerson You are wrong. Fuyao is a Chinese company. In 2014, Fuyao invested 500 million US dollars to build a car glass manufacturing plant in Dayton, Ohio

    I had one of these (Fuyao) - until I replaced it with something better. The Fuyao was ***significantly*** more reflective than the OEM glass manufactured by "Shatterprufe" (the brand).

    0:15 "after six months the rock chip spread". No, the repair failed.
    Also, the use of the long-reach knife when removing the glass (and cutting back the urethane) is not good practice.

    No seat covers .no hood protection or wing protection. No dash or steering wheel cover. Cave man tools used in the 70s.
    Slashing using a long knife .1 slip dash could cost thousands.
    Most American fitters don't even come close to European fitters.

      I called Toyota 101 in Redwood City, and they quoted me 1,000 for the glass, 375 to install and 775 to recalibrate, highway robbery. I asked if they did it inhouse or subbed it out. She said they subbed it out as they couldn't recalibrate. I asked who they subbed it out to, and she told me Hitech in Redwood City. I called Doug at Hitech and he quoted me $950 for the compete job for an OEM windshield for a 2018 Tacoma TRD. I'm going with Hitech.

      I paid $25 deductible to have the windshield replaced on my daughters FJ Cruiser, this was in Tennessee when she was a student, glass shop said it was about $1500.00 with no insurance. No telling how much that would have been at home, we live in Southern California. She had it done again when she came back home, cost me another $25.00, both times with OEM glass!

About $67 per auto per month.

  • @bml33
    @bml33 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You don't have insurance on your cars? I have comprehensive insurance and I chose a full coverage with no deductible since we get rock chips here all the time. I just had one replaced, cost me nothing. They put in a Fuyao. The rubber molding comes pre-attached and its not cut straight on one of the corners so it looks like a cheap after market. They told me the gap would not matter because the urethane seal strip is underneath so that gap is only for looks. BTW its a Hyundai and the OEM was Saint Gobain. The last Fuyao windshield had the molding that wasn't straight. I wasn't happy that insurance would not pay for oem.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No deductable glass coverage adds around $200 per year to each vehicle. For the price and the odds of needing an entirely new windshield, I decided to roll the dice and just pay out of pocket. There is no free coverage when it comes to insurance. Everything you pay for though some things are automatically priced it to make it seems like it's free.

    • @bml33
      @bml33 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CarFanatic $200 per year....wow! But I forgot that you're in an expensive state and driving an expensive car. I used to have a $250 deductible but then I went to zero which cost around an extra $70 per year. I did this because our roads are bad here and I had 3 cracks. My 2017 Hyundai has now had 2 Fuyao windshields. Its crazy.

    I'm having this glass installed on my s2k by Safelite. I'm weary of quality, especially because of the chinese name, which - of course - implies inferior quality. The thing is though, I drive canyons, and I also seem to get pelted by lots of various objects on the freeway. Why spend $1k+ on oem when it's probably just going to be damaged soon anyway? It's only $182 for me with a coupon code. The front windshield is a bit of a wear item, IMO, especially if you track or frequent the canyons.

    Just FYI... OEM is always better than Aftermarket Chinese crap. They do not match the glass thickness exactly the same. The quality is not the same which is obviously why the price is lower. Fuyao Acoustic glass is not the same caliber as SoundScreen Acoustic. There’s more road noise and the thickness is lacking from the layers of glass. The sound dampening material that’s sandwiched between the two panels of glass isn’t the same quality. If you put a straight edge on both windshields you’ll see that Fuyao is much FLATTER than a SoundScreen windshield. Flat = more wind / cabin noise = higher db. Curved = more arrow dynamic and less road/ cabin noise. The ride is much quieter.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe.... But I didn't notice a difference. And, after a year, I ended up getting two rock chips. So it doesn't make sense for be to spend $1500 on OE windshield when the windshield is essentially disposable.

    I gotta frown on this. =( Chinese glass and their laminate/tempering processes are significantly lower quality. I spec glass all the time and we avoid chinese glass like a plague. I think you've greatly diminished the value of your car. Porsche enthusiasts know this stuff, especially since you have it in mind to sell *over the past year you have* There are economics of scale but for something like a porsche which somehow transcends economic, it breaks my heart to see you install a cheap chinese replica on a beautiful german machine.

    • @mikec1096

      i'm not in the market to buy a porsche as i already have one. but if i were buying a drivers car then his car is in good shape. you can see all his youtube videos and the maintenance he's done. his logic is more than reasonable if he would want to replace the windshield in a few years with the oem. these cars are low to the ground and very aerodynamic which means a lot of rocks and debris just flip right over the hood onto the windshield. if it happened once, it will happen again. the oem windshield lasted 7 years and is 3x the price so if the aftermarket lasted 3.5 years it'd be more durable empirically. the true test would be to have someone drive 2 cars before looking at the windshield labels , if they can't tell oem vs aftermarket every time then it is as good if they can then oem is worth it. i've replaced many car parts and a lot of times oem is way better, sometimes oem is better but not worth the egregious price hike, and sometimes aftermarket is better. it's complicated when you consider the nitty gritty. thank you to car fanatic for bringing up this topic as i have not seen any other videos like this on youtube.
      btw, how is your nissan altima doing?

    • @K1dPhresh1
      @K1dPhresh1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike C I have to agree with you. For one it's a very clean car, but at the end of the day it's a 997.2 CS, not a GT3 or 911R or some low production variant. If it's functional and economical, why pay 3 times the price for an OEM replacement? Now in 20 years IF it goes the way of air cooled Porsches (because at that time everything is electric) and petrol powered P-cars are commanding premium pricing then replace the glass with OEM. I'm sure by then it'll be 10 times the price of the aftermarket one.

    • @awdaltima2
      @awdaltima2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My nissan altima is not bad for a 22 year old car. I haven't had the opportunity to break the glass on it yet *knock on wood* but I've considered replacements and I would get an oem one =)

    • @K1dPhresh1
      @K1dPhresh1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No disrespect, but on a 22 year old Nissan Altima you'd pay more for OEM over aftermarket? Are the differences that great?

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +awdaltima2 I hear you on that. For me, with all the maintenance coming due on my cars, I wanted to keep expenditures within a reasonable amount. With my luck, I'll probably get a broken windshield in the next few years. I have a lower deductible now and will go with an OEM windshield the next time around. But really, the clarity is great on this glass!
