The only reason it's not is because of the long GOP codec, no all-I and lack of olpf. Netflix wants to make sure you can capture internal highbitrate especially for documentary work. But the truth is that some Netflix content is shot on non-approved cameras ;-)
Regardless, the S1 is a beast and Netflix will approve production done with that or any pro camera. The Long Gop in Panasonic is designed in such a way that the files are beautiful and won't break apart as some other brands.
Hey, thanks for the review. GH4 does have one secret super-power, which is that with a compatible recorder, it can do external 422 10 bit. I actually had expected that you would use that combination rather than the internal 8 bit, since that would bring it closer to the other cameras in terms of quality/dynamic range, I think. GH5 and beyond of course offer major improvements
Hey man, the GH5S's native ISO in v-logL is 800 and 5000, not 400. The camera might perform slightly better in the dynamic range test. Thanks for the video!
You're right! The GH5s native ISO in V-Log is 800! Thanks for noticing! 400 ISO if for non-log profiles. At least the fact remains that the BGH1 still would have about a full stop more of range. I'm curious to test the difference between 400 and 800 on the GH5s to see... maybe 1/4 stop difference?
One huge difference is the Leica L mount for the S1 so you cannot use any of the other lenses since it is a totally different sized sensor, whereas the GH5s has a slightly larger sensor than the GH4, especially in 4:3 and uses the same lenses. I personally love shooting in 4:3 to match with movie cameras and that is often overlooked as everyone seems forced to use 16:9 or 17:9 which is a shame. I personally like intercutting the 4:3 with the 1:37 ratio movie cameras.
such a great comparison! I have continued to pick up used GH4 at good deals for multi-cam shoots and it still holds up pretty well albeit being pretty noisy compared to modern cameras.
Fantastic video! I can tell a lot of effort went into this and it's appreciated. Notes, the BGH1 did well against the S1 but I noticed on the water scene that the ripples looked soft compared to the others other than that....it's decent. Thanks again and subbed.
Glad you liked Cole! BGH1 is an amazing little box, bought 1, and than bought more a week after lol. Yes indeed there's something about the BGH1 OLPF or sensor profiling that's soothes out all the water ripples. Strange behavior, especially since this camera is usually very detailed and sharp. If someone can explain.
You're right! It's possible. The intended was to test internal capabilities of these cameras. Granted when using an external recorder they all upgrade to a next level but also huge file sizes.
I’m only about 15 minutes in but I have a question. First off great job with the video! Definitely subscribing. How did you deal with the slightly different native ISO on these different cameras?
Great question! The they all have native ISO of 400 but the S1 with 640. What I did is using same lens on all camera. Canon3 24-105mm then ajusted shutter speed using false color on external monitor OR + or - 0.1 to 0.2 exposure adjustment in post. All and all, very subtle adjustment.
Just curious that the GH4 wasn’t captured at 10 bit 422 for VLOG (supported for external recording via HDMI) for a closer comparison. That explains the clipping and color reduction for GH4 pictures. :)
Good point! The goal was to show how they perform "out the box" without external recorders. That shows the achievable results possible for most users. Even at 10bit I doubt the GH4 would clip further away, it's still vlog L. Maybe a smoother roll-off.
I find the autofocus on the GH5s and BGH1 are usuable in a lot of situations now with their fw updates. It shows on your demonstrations even when you were talking down on it lol
It would be interesting see how the GH4 holds up with an external recorder like az atomos ninja, they can record 10 bit extrernally...i would like to see the graphs...
Thanks for the detailed review - so would I be correct in saying that you would go for the S1 over the BGH1? I'm leaning heavily toward the S1 right now, but still looking at the Sony A7III or A7C.
S1 and BGH1 have different use. If you also do photos. Go with S1. If you mostly work as a videographer the BGH1 has more video features and network capabilities for streaming. Bgh1 has less rolling shutter also, better for sport or fast paced content. S1 has better color and dynamic range.
@@jeremyedwards9304 Thanks Jeremy! Yeah I'm definitely set on the S5 if I'm getting a new camera. The thing is I posted this comment 11 months ago and still haven't written a short for me to shoot. I'm leaning towards getting an iPhone 14 since it's time to upgrade anyway, seeing if I actually use it to film some stuff, and then if I do, getting an S5 as an upgrade. But I don't want to buy an S5 and have it sit in my closet like all my green screen equipment and LED lights.
Postproduction should be, must be, considered esential part of making a picture. Unless you exhaust the full potential of an image, we are still floating in doubts.
But if I were to use my Atomos Ninja V with an S1 I can continue to use Pro-Res like you mentioned. I think this is a better option rather than the S1H or S5.
The odd man out is obviously the S1, which has zero synergy with the MFT ecosystem. Really, the main thing the S1 has in common with the GH4, GH5s, GH6, and BGH1 is the "Panasonic Lumix" brand name.
The exercise here is to compare image quality among different sensors whichever sizes. Interesting to see how MFT can hold it's ground even being way smaller
Why does your gh4 look so awful? Its 8 bit is WAY better than that, but that brings another question. Why didn't you film in 10bit while you did with the others? edit: Never mind. I kept watching and you used the same settings for each camera. For some reason.
Hope this comment helps you to understand you cant talk about details when you editing in premier in a HP and scale 4k to HD.... just another bad video
Hopefully this comparison will help you choose the right camera for the job! Which one have you been using?
I'm still rocking the gh3 lol! S1 though is on my radar. Great video, really appreciate the hard work, and it's easy to tell you are good at this.
@@michaelikonya2048 thank you!! :-) You're a GH vet! Going from GH3 to S1 will be a major leap. Way bigger than GH4 to S1.
I’ve shot 4 full features on my GH4 using CinelikeD and under exposing a little bit to avoid that saturation.
@@pacoreguenga 4 films!? Impressive 👍 where can we watch them?
I’m a big user of the GH4, GH5s, LUMIX S1 and SIGMA fp - awesome cameras - and this is a great comparison video - thank you for doing this ⛩
honestly the s1 should be added to the list of approved cameras for netflix, especially if you shot external raw

You can request to use out of spec cameras and depending on the project and how much out of spec it is, they might/probably approve it anyway.
Looking forward to you adding a comparison to the gh6 when it comes out.
Thanks for this. Very useful.
I'm curious too to see what sensor and processing they'll squeeze inside!

@@ntchi Both GH5s and BGH1 have OLPF, but the sensor gain in BGH1 has been tweaked and reduce the “digital sharpness” as much as possible

Thanks, glad that you like! I'll try to find time to make more of those.
13:09 I learned this today.. makes sense.
The Gh4 got full HD 50mbs, this is great, sometimes you need good quality but whith a low mbs count.
That's true, when you shoot a 4 hour event you don't need the utmost bitrate.
good vid, man! appreciate that!
Thank you a lot for this test , respecfully , bests regards , Roland Tan
Thanks! Which part of the test you find more interesting?
Great comparison! this channel deserves so many more views...Could you share your video-eccentric custom buttons setup on the S1?

Big like for this review!
Question...Would the GH4 footage have better dynamic range if it was 10 bit like the other cameras? Could have been recorded using external monitor.
Maybe a tad more. But less than half a stop. Since dynamic range is not just codec but also sensor technology and processing.

Yes it is okay when you have a well lit scene I'd say. But it still "hunts" for focus instead of locking perfectly.
Excellent video. I think the term would be "clips" at 75% around minute 9 talking about dynamic range.

BGH1 TOP.....!!!
I cant afford any of these except the GH4 so tat is what I am picking.
Still a good choice Even in 2022. Still holds up well for 1080p content.

Detail ain't everything, I prefer the softer image S1. Looks more cinematic. Gh4, which I own, looks videoish.
Not sure the S1 is "soft". It's actually quite sharp. The S1H is softer. It's true that the GH4 is more videoish.
These LED lights are no good, try Waveform Lighting LED, they smooth the brightness curve to the point where it's far smoother than incandescent.
Why does your gh4 look so awful? Its 8 bit is WAY better than that, but that brings another question. Why didn't you film in 10bit while you did with the others?
