    I’ve been using Gh5s for 4years now. This camera totally rocks and is a good tool to up your skill level as a filmmaker. I have tried different color profiles, my preferred profile being CINE D and Natural, now I mostly shoot in V-Log and I love it. It’s just as you’ve said, GH5s is truly a beast of a camera. Quick question: What do you think about S5? Would you choose S5 over GH5s?

    Great review! And it is nice to see that somebody makes a review based on his experience, and not for promotion of one new camera. I absolutely love GH5s, and although the af performance is not the best on this world, for weddings on a dance floor when the lighting is really dim and using iso 6400 I find it really accurate, in fact I use Aff all the time with my 12-35 2.8 and I have no complains. I tried to use the s5 but it did not perform as good as my gh5s.

Also, when I use these older Panasonic cameras, I'm constantly reminded of this creative outlook from the great Russian composer Igor Stravinsky: "The more constraints one imposes, the more one frees one's self. Man the GH5s has been an absolute money maker for me. I'm really contemplating getting a 2nd body. The 4K 422 all-intra 10-bit is insane. And if you shoot at 1080p you can get the same codec at 50p. (my top clients are corporate and are more than happy with 1080p).

    It seems I am following in your footsteps, although up here in Sydney. I bought the GH5 M2 a couple of months ago and am loving it. This afternoon I was using some adapted EF lenses. I had forgotten how much I had gotten used to MFT over the last couple of years with the G9. Holding those EF L lenses I was surprised how heavy they are. As a result I put together my remaing EF lenses ready to sell, and I will invest in the GH5S.

    I have 2 GH5S's and a GH6. I bought my first GH5S new when they first came out. I sold my GH5 to get a used GH5S for my second camera. I bought the GH6 to have a three camera shoot for my Mom and Dads memorial service. I love the color science of the GH6 but can't beat the low light of the GH5S. Would love to have 2 GH6's but would always keep one of the GH5S's. I shoot on Meike primes and DZO and Oly zooms. Not into auto focus. I also shoot BRAW with the GH5S. Wish they would allow it with the GH6. I edit with Resolve so Prores RAW doesn't cut it for me. Try HLG sometime. I get really great video with it.

    I cut my teeth on a GH5 “s” - I still own it. I use it as a C camera often with my C300mk iii
    To learn filmmaking on a non stabilized system with terrible auto focus has made me a better filmmaker forsure.
    I often find myself manual racking my c300 mkiii even though that has incredible auto focus.
    I often shoot with a metabones and sigma 18-35. I agree they are slightly magenta but that’s an easy fix in post.
    2023 and I still LOVE my GH5 “s”.

    Nice to still see appreciation for the GH5s, I still love mine. I have been thinking about trading my GH5s in to buy an A7Siii, but part of me would hate to lose my GH5s because it is so compact with small lenses. And the amount I can get for my GH5s just doesn't seem worth it. I currently have a Sigma 18-35 for all my manual focus stuff and an Olympus 17mm F1.8 for when I need it to be compact or if I need autofocus. The autofocus is usable (obviously not always reliable) when shooting in 60p, but I was wondering if another lens could possible improve it on even more. Maybe something like the Panasonic 12-35 ii. what experience have you got with different lenses on the GH5s?

      @GeekyNerdyTechy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I haven't tried the 12-35mm on this camera but I use it all of the time on the GH5II/GH6. I'll need to test it out. I actually purchased that lens right between the time when I didn't own and re-purchased the GH5s. My instinct is, it should work pretty well. The 12-35mm is one of the better AF lenses. I'll give it a shot coming up. :)

      @@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks Shane, I would really appreciate to see it working on the GH5s. The AF and the stabilization (handheld and on a gimbal).
      I had played with the idea of getting an OM-1 but I haven't found a really good review of this camera yet for video (sorry if you have done one and I haven't seen it).
      It does 10bit and is suppose to have much better AF and great stabilization. But I haven't seen a lot really showing off its video capabilities. What's your thoughts on this camera?

    Thanks Shane for your info. I see you love the GH5S as well. I am hoping the low light on the S52X is close to the GH5S. - You should show this next comment to Panasonic, for entertainment if nothing else. The IBIS on these Lumix cam/lens combos starting with the GH4 is so powerful, a few years back I started shooting close to 90 percent of my events holding the cam on my face, like a still photographer. The stabilizer on the newer MFT 12-35 ii lens completely compensates for the lack of IBIS on the GH5S. The combination of using the latest Lumix EVF and IBIS in a run and gun environment is a total game changer for near perfect framing and exposure control. In 2023 the GH5S/12-35ii basically never left my face for about half of the events, It makes you WANT to over shot! I have gotten to the point where the shot viewed through the EVF is preferable to my naked eyes. Panasonic gave us bionic eyes. Here is the problem - Every time I convince myself I want the Sony/Canon look PLUS gaining a stopin really bad light, their inferior IBIS stops me cold from the purchase. Sony should setup a Lumix rehab to boost their sales. I know it's fixable in post on Sony/Canon, but seeing the footage live as it will be used is probably the best feature Panasonic ever spent time and money on.

    Salut
    I love that you are making videos about the GH5s...it is one of the best MFT ever...but I did purchase my second S5 recently over GH5s.
    You have a lot GH5s for sale second hand unfortunately here kind of expensive or better to say I found a almost new S5 for the price of an used GH5s...
    The GH5s has the same or close to BMPCC4K for what I read and the crop is 1.8.
    One of the great things is Timeclocksync in the flash socket.
    About image quality of GH5s try to shoot with video assist Braw or proresraw.
    Footage is noisy but colors are even better...I will probably trade one GH5 for one used GH5s...

    so does it have continuous auto focus or not? One thing is autofocus andother is that it is continuous... I want a good video-focused camera as an actor doing all the work myself, filming myself in front of the camera and so I like it can keep me in focus even if I back away a meter or come up close to the lens... can I still do it with this camera or which in this price class now in 2024 will be the best choice? what about about the Black Magic camera? I got three lenses already and a GH3 but feel is time to upgrade my gear... I also film documentaries in poetic moods, and observational documentaries and like to follow people in the streets to see what life is like for different people, who are real-life characters and see life from their perspectives.. what camera to choose then in 2024?
    thanks for a great review of this model, I am interested but there is something in me that says, maybe not this one.. but still I am confused as to, what then? which camera can I afford in 2024 and still be up to date and do the things I want with a camera...

      It has CAF, but it's not phase detection - it's contrast DFD. You can make it work in most cases with some experimentation especially if you're behind the camera, but the autofocus for a single shooter in the field isn't as good as Phase Detection.. If you want phase detection autofocus, get the G9II if you want a micro four thirds camera. Otherwise, the S5II is a killer camera with great Autofocus. Blackmagic has no usable autofocus, it allows you to single shot, then you're all in manual focus from there. The GH stuff is mostly used by manual focus shooters.

    Torn between GH5s and S5 for multicam setup! Mainly capturing live music, also full shows 1h plus duration when I'm performing with my bands. Occasionally music videos etc. Would get two bodies to start with. GH5s has the timecode sync and fullsize hdmi... then again S5 easy power via usb. What's your take on this? And how important in the end is the timecode sync ability and do you actually utilize it?

      I got back into these for a multi camera setup. They are light and small and have no recording limits. You can get a third party dummy battery for about $25 that powers them all day. MFT makes getting your band members in focus a lot easier without raising the iso and also has less rolling shutter. The S5 is awesome I also have a second channel where I use them on there but the lenses cost more as well so MTF is a cost effective way of getting great results.

      @@GeekyNerdyTechy I ended up getting a gh6 lol the gh5s will live on sticks. I bought speedboosters and in terms of image quality,DoF and FoV it’s awesome but a native lens would be great to AF. I’ll probably pick up the 12-35 ii and 35-100 ii to have two native zooms and get EF primes to adapt. That’s the same route I’m following on my FF S cams. Lumix 24-70 (gonna get a 70-200 2.8 soon) and my primes will be EF mount to be shared across all of my cameras from gh & s series cams.

      I am not much of a Fuji guy, sorry. I reviewed the XT4 which I liked, but I didn't like it more than the GH6 except for the slow motion which was amazing. The X-H2S looks like a solid camera, but I would rather use a S5 or A7SIII.

    Hi, What is the difference between Lumix GH5S and GH5 II?

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The GH5S has better low light performance, different colour science, and a wider field of view. The GH5II has better IBIS and more 10 bit codecs. The GH5II also does the pixel to pixel mode for video if you need it (digital crop)

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are shooting mostly handheld and need better AF the GH5II is the way to go. The GH5S has a more premium look about it due to the 9% extra field of view and better low light capabilities.

    How to you film with the GH5s? Handheld? On a tripod/monopod or gimbal?

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy

      Mostly tripod and gimbal use. I have used it handheld for slow motion filming but mostly set up in a stationary position like in this video.

    In the US the GH5S is actually more expensive than the GH6. Why would you chose the GH5S over the GH6? What is it that the GH6 can't do that the GH5S offers?

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They were 40% off which made them half the price of the GH6. I also have a GH6 already. I explained about a multi camera setup in the video. These are smaller, lighter, dual native iso, matching SD cards etc.

      I think your asking the wrong question! The question should be why is a 4 year old camera the same price as a supposed better new model? Answer because there is still a demand for it.

    Are you enjoying your fx3? Also, what lens would you recommend for documentary/ vlog content?

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The FX3 is a beast of a camera for the right person. If you want great autofocus and excellent 4k image quality it's a hard combination to beat. That said, I found the IBIS pretty underwhelming and the 3.5mm audio connector doesn't work great with some wireless packs thanks to poor internal shielding. The short answer is, I don't enjoy it as much as Panasonic cameras when I am behind the camera, but for content and UHD videos, the FX3 is good. The A7SIII is basically the same for less money, with a view finder. Vlog content recommendation comes down to good autofocus and good ibis. The GH6 is a good contender for that, but the AF isn't Sony good. Most of the Sony cameras have horrible rolling shutter or poor IBIS. The A7C, A7IV both suffer from these issues. Each camera has its own set of ups and downs depending on what you need.

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a look at your videos. Have a look at the Sony FX30 if you're just getting started. It is a better long term choice than some of the other Sony cameras in the range and its less expensive than the FX30 at no real disadvantage. The Panasonic GH6 is also an excellent option. See which one meets your needs better :).

    It’s a special camera but should be discontinued. The price (new) doesn’t compete with similar prices units anymore. It’s a good buy on the used market and I still love it but I can’t imagine anyone buying it at full price.

    If you have a Gh5S or Gh5, you should use Panasonic Native lenses for auto focus. Third party lenses cannot work very well for auto focus scenerios. I dont prefer everyone not use Viltrox M2 or Metabones speedboster adaptors. Because they are only use for manual focus situations. They cannot work for auto focus shoots. I am generally use for auto focus shoots for Lumix 25 MM f1.7, Lumix 42,5 MM f1.7, Leica 12-60 f2.8 and Olympus 12-40 f2.8 Pro. They work very fine when you use auto focus mode. Not the best but not bad. You can use and no problem at all. If you want to shoot manual focus at the low light situations. I prefer only one lens, it is Voigtlander 17.5mm F0.95 Nokton. It is very very enough for manual focus shoot for at all.

    The sigma lenses dont 'pulse', they're the only way to get rid of it afaik (should work for the G9, GH5s and GH5ii).
    A gentleman called John Harvey here on youtube has extensive tests with the G9 and sigma prime trio, across all the G9's firmware updates, if you want to see for yourself.
    Should be the same or slightly better on the GH5s compared to the G9.
