I learned about Joey from someone's post in Facebook last year, and I was so speechless! I couldn't stop listening/watching everything in TH-cam about him. I would close my eyes to really listen to his music, and my mind can't get around the fact that the complex, improvised melody is played by a 10 year old. He makes me so proud as we are both from Indonesia, and I wish I had an iota of his incredible gift from God. I love listening to jazz since I was his age, and now I am witnessing the Mozart of jazz in my lifetime. My heart swells with pride and gratitude for this boy! Terima kasih Joey udah membagi bakat yang Tuhan berikan untuk kamu kepada dunia. Thank you Joey for sharing the gift that God has given you to this world.
My mom told me she heard a ten year old Chinese kid (she didn’t know) really playing jazz. I said sure mom. I listened and burst into tears because I knew I was witnessing a miracle.
he's already playing at the level of adult professional musicians and he's only 11 years old in this video! Phenomenal - and yet it must be a pleasure for the adults to play with him as he provides access to the child in them and unlimited expression as we all have in childhood! Fabulous Job!
I first heard Joey Alexander live on June 20, 2015 during his performance at Hatch Recital Hall at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, during the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. This gifted jazz child plays with the utmost maturity, of which many pianists (of all ages) don't achieve! I'm blessed to be in radio and have hosted Artistry in Jazz since 1982. I have never been more moved by any artist I've met or heard. Let's all enjoy this special journey of pianist Joey Alexander.
Joey does what every jazz musician aspires to, spontaneous composition/improvisation in the present moment. For the "normal" musician, that takes 10s of 1000s of hours of tedious practice, memorization, and dedication, that over time becomes internalized to where improvisation becomes moments of spontaneous creation mixed in with memorized licks. Eventually, those truly gifted become the masters of their instruments, and achieve the level of improvisational skills that mere mortals only dream of. Then there is Joey...
ChaoticEuphoria Wow...Quite the most accurate and constructive critique I have EVER read on TH-cam. You describe the way I do it but struth, it doesn't come out anywhere near this!! Apart from the acquisition of that stunning technique and those 1000s of hours required to master it, how has he got in the essential listening time...? No man is an island and we all depend knowing the genre of Jazz and we need to gather the influence of the rest of the Jazz world. I am bewildered and delighted by him!
This young man inspires me and is playing decades beyond his so called chronological age. I love how he pops a little Brad Mehldau'esque thing in at 1:00. He just breezes in and out of different styles/worlds like Picasso did - and is finding his own voice in the process. I hope Joey (and I) live long lives so I can enjoy his music for years to come!
Everything Joey plays is AMAZING and each time is slightly different than the last time. Imagine the music going on his head and coming from his heart to create such flawless improvisations. He is a very old soul and a gift from God to us.
when creations like this are among us, using their amazing skills to fill us with wonder, they are messengers of a realm that must inspire us all. This time we see a musician with a talent that goes beyond our comprehension and accepted learning curves.
Holy Cow. That rendition of Giant Steps.... it put me in another dimension. This boy is amazing and beyond a master if that's possible. I listen and it's almost beyond real because every note and chord is perfect. His technique - other worldly. He has an amazing grasp of melody and harmony. I'm blown away by his magic - he is the new Merlin of Jazz
I love this kid. So gifted and so kind. He's inspiring and makes me think that the world may be okay if there were more like him. Thank you Joey for sharing your love of music!
His talent for creativity and improvisation is staggering. His maturity is that of a seasoned professional with decades of experience all in the body of a child.
Joey Alexander is a phenomenal little guy with phenomenal talent. Released his first album at the tender age of 11. Being nominated for Grammy Awards, had the opportunity to play at some of the worlds best jazz venues and the list goes on. He is a true prodigy and a beautiful gift from God. God bless you always little buddy.
I have to catch my breath during this arresting and commanding performance. Simply breathtaking to witness this from such a young child!!!! Radiant, striking and impressive command of the keyboard. I could go on and on, and on........wow
How can it be explained that this kid is this good so early in his young life?...the mysteries of the mind can't always be explained. Piano musicians go to school for years to obtain the mastery that he is now playing with. What a terrific gift to the world he is. I have an ear for skillful playing and this kid clearly is an accomplished professional. The wonders of the mind can never be full explained....what an awesome kid!!
They say we only use 10% of our brain's capability. I would say that Joey is using 90%. 10% from each of the 9 greatest jazz piano players who have ever lived.
So love to watch these 'old' videos of when Joey is very young. The surprise I feel when his fingers hit the keys so commandingly when he starts will never get old!
There are very few exceptionality spirit gifted people in our lifetime. Can you imagine how the jazz greats ...etc..are enjoying this spectacular hip cat. What a joy! Not to appreciate this artist only reveals the obvious in our world.
I just want to cry... he's too much!!! Friends used to tell me (before Joey was born) that they've met some unbelievable musicians in Indonesia, I didn't believe them then... I'm dumbfounded!
The more you know about the complexity of playing jazz, the more you understand how amazing this young man is. Normally a sceptic, I have come to the conclusion there must be a supernatural explanation!
Joey's depth of jazz is out of normalcy given his age! He has been able to amass incredible finesse of jazz quite early in his life, and I am yet to closely follow him and see where he graduates to in his midlife!!
Wonderful playing, it does make me question if reincarnation is a reality and he has brought some knowledge forward. I can think of no other possible way that this super intuitive, young rounded musician can achieve this standard so early on. Truly fabulous.
AAAAAAAYYYYYYEEEEEEE! JOEY YOU ARE REMARKABLE.....It is simply astonishing that a child has the depth, maturity, facility, and range of chord use and jazz vocabularity he has. And he moves about with freedom and ease. In all of history I dare say no one has sprung forth a child able to do whatever he wants in the very intricate world of jazz. JOEY is constantly and perfectly composing as he goes, using a language that normally requires decades to form. I LOVE THIS YOUNG MAN......
Rick Jordon his father is NOT professional musician. Not long after joey had small keyboard, he played much better than his father. Joey virtualy self taught, because in Indonesia, only a few jazz pianist that can play better than joey.
Rick Jordon this is joey father (DS Denny Sila) interview: MP: Are you a musician? DS: I'm not a professional musician. But I do play a bit of guitar and piano. MP: You helped Joey to get started? Yes, that's how I got Joey to play. I'd play something at the piano and he'd ask me to move over. Then he'd then play the same idea. But he sounded a lot better than me! This was when he was 6. What happened really was Joey couldn't stand listening to me! So he decided to play instead. My bad playing was a blessing in disguise.
Amazed of the level of playing at such a young age. One has to sit an admire without questioning how he achieved this with no formal piano training and just enjoy the beauty of the sound he projects as well as the other two great musicians.
OMG, this is the best anywhere, I am totally stunned, bravo Joe Alexander, phenomenal playing and jazz sense, what a shining star, I hope others get to see this, pure genius, really love his playing, the solo track at 42:00 is mind-blowing, then into the baddest Giant Steps, simply the best!
Joey also played it at the Lincoln Center. Three times. Everytime he interpreted it DIFFERENTLY! Have you heard this? Good Lord! At 10 years old! th-cam.com/video/W2bUPjG-Vno/w-d-xo.html
My 1 year old cat is usually chill. When I played your music, she tried to climb from her spot on the windowsill through the screen. I had to close the window. Thanks, Joey;p Love your music and sidemen.
OMG - Joey Alexander is phenomenal!!! Can't believe he is for real!!! AND - the bass player, whose name I could not catch, is the BEST I have ever heard in my 50 years of listening to jazz!!!
Something is seriously wrong with the way music is appreciated in this day and age. I mean an individual possessing a quarter of lil' Joey Alexander's talent and skills gets hundreds of millions (even billions) of views, while this child prodigy gets a lil more than a hundred thousand. . .
Just caught Joey live for the first time here in Washington DC last Friday ... I have been following him for a while now but seeing him live ... wow ... what a talent!!!!
Now I can't go out cause too green (... with envy). The first time in Europe in the summer of 2014, when Joey visited Denmark, I didn't know about him yet and the USA was too far for me.
I live in DC, I'm looking for his tour schedule because I would love to attend his concert. I just found out about him on YT Jarasum Jazz Festival. I cried 😢
If you can get a Scandinavian audience whooping, you're doing something awesome... congrats, Joey. I can't get enough of watching & listening to you play.
The kid's coming to the Musical Instrument Museum here in Phoenix and I will be there without a doubt. This is seeing the future of jazz right here and now.
"How wondrous are Your deeds, oh Creator" This jazz-loving religious Jew has a spiritual experience listening to Joey! I feel like making a special brochah. We must all be thankful! Brilliant. Pure. Proficient. Creative. Mature. Joey may indeed become the best jazz performer...ever!
Saw Joey A. Do concert with full orchestra..so Amazing, Out of this world. Played a T.Monk piece..haven't stopped telling people and wondering where this magic comes from. A genius!
+Joanne Alberstein It really does seem like magic. But to be fair I have to admit that all highly skilled musicians seem like magicians to me. I think the fact that Joey can play as well as he does suggests two things: First, he is a genius, maybe even at the level of Mozart. Second, musical maturity does not respect chronological age.
This kid was born in Bali where the music being the closes friend beside nature. He never lost his childhood cause music being part of his life....proud to you Joey

ChaoticEuphoria Interesting thing is that Joey, in one of his interviews said that the process he experienced on Jazz is something normal :) :)

This kid is a prodigy! Some people were born with a significant purpose of great magnitude and Joey Alexander is one of those people.
This kid plays on another planet. Wow. What a career lies ahead for him. Wynton Marsalis calls him a genius and he is right on.

Joey is the modern jazz Mozart reincarnated! Great chord changes, harmonies and melody. No boring redundancy. Sophisticated rich chords. WOW!
His talent for creativity and improvisation is staggering. His maturity is that of a seasoned professional with decades of experience all in the body of a child.

This is thing short of genius. Child prodigy at the highest level. Don't miss his subtle body movements, rhythm is flowing through him...
OUT OF THIS WORLD
MINDBLOWING
FANTASTIC
Oscar Petersons reincarnation
and its not just formula jazz, its full of new and interesting ideas that draw you into the music.
So love to watch these 'old' videos of when Joey is very young. The surprise I feel when his fingers hit the keys so commandingly when he starts will never get old!
This sounds just as wonderful as 4-5 years ago when I first heard it- a great recording of incredible creativity.
The greatest jazz pianist since the piano was invented ;)
There are very few exceptionality spirit gifted people in our lifetime. Can you imagine how the jazz greats ...etc..are enjoying this spectacular hip cat. What a joy! Not to appreciate this artist only reveals the obvious in our world.
Shades of Brubeck, but greater especially for his age, haven't heard Jazz played thisgreat since the 50"s
So cute, and funny, he stands up and says he forgot the name of the piece, and then plays it, and several others from memory.
exactly, he need a piece of paper for the names, but do not need sheet music at all
@@lacasadepapel9365 Probably shows you it's a different part of the brain, and maybe stored differently. This kid is amazing.
@@MrJdsenior Correct. The names of the compositions are stored in the left hemisphere whereas the music originates in the right hemisphere.

I still can''t believe how amazing this kid is....
Joey starts Giant Steps 51:03 and brings the rhythm section in like he is watching a rerun of Gilligan's Island. Unreal.
Custom Video Solution That part blew my mind to a million bits.
That's it !!! I QUIT !! This kid is amazing !!
Jazz is assured a great one. A musician with soul, a gift to us all.

Of all the things a 10 year old to understand, dynamic balance and accompianing a jazz bass soloist were not what I expected.
God has Blessed this Jazz Man. . . . .
Joey has those long fingers like McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson and Ahmad Jamal!!!! We are lucky to see a child who appreciates serious music.

What a cute little boy and a genius of a different kind from Indonesia! Exceptional playing and touch on a piano👆👏🙌👋
How wonderful Indnesian young boy is? His peformance is pefect. Incredible because this kind of young boy can play the piano perfectly.
Love the bass'man, he keeps joey the kid down, but in reality, all the grown ups does so!

The finesse and interpretation that he’s able to attain at such a young age makes me think again about the supernatural.
Finesse is not a word you usually associate with a kid. But Joey had it even at that age.
Wow. What else can one say? Sounds fantastic, fellas, I love this so much. Wow. Amazing abilities.
i heard neils san doky, i bet hes so proud, you are so smooth joey. you are the best living musician, period, without a doubt.
