This video is so good. Seriously. And I mean this from a technical standpoint too. The narration sounds crisp, the soundtrack volume is perfect, the footage selected for each line is great. I'm only going out of my way to say this because I see that there aren't that many views yet and I need you to know that this video turned out genuinely fantastic. Love the video. It's worth mentioning that in 2020-21 there were a few more categories added to the game, to allow for shorter runs. "Defeat Metalgreymon" being the shortest run at under an hour. This was done to try and draw more runners to the game, giving them a more accessible entry into learning runs and routes. It worked, as those categories have many more runners and runs, but it hasn't translated to more any% runs.
Digimon World 2 is for people who run Forbidden Memories and eventually become numb to the grind and the RNG. Where in FM you could spend 20 minutes randomizing for a good starting deck, Digimon world 2 has no "Front loaded RNG." You're committing at least 4-5 hours per run before you know if you even have a viable run going, and even then the game is so dense with RNG that all of that time loss or gain could be made up for in a single domain. It really is the domain of true masochists. Those who believe themselves immune to grind or monotony should first experience DW2 before being able to make that statement with certainty.
@JoshuaPAMployee same! I think over the years I have had about 15 games all maxing the 99.59 hours. Back in the day my disk was scratched and sometimes took hours to have attacks go off or even permanently freeze.
Thank you for making this video! I always forget about some of those earlier runs of the game. The early capture card issues. Starting the run at midnight to try and say I completed the game within a single day. Azureflame coming a minute and a half short of my record soon after it had been set! Not knowing about the PS2's fast disc speed to improve the loading times (in the early attempts.) The tradition that grew to take a shot every time we battled Joy Joy. Constantly forgetting about GAIA's Light Gun attack. And of course who could ever forget the return bug in Chaos tower returning my T(B)ankmon, who was specifically in the digibeetle as a decoy for a potential hidden return bug! It's been such a fun journey. While my final team remains similar to my early runs, the routing was definitely tinkered with and optimized. The run is definitely improvable with good luck and some more micro-optimizing. I know chaotix's route has the potential to beat my run too (though I don't know whose route is truly better.) I think a decent amount of time can be saved by taking more early game risks. I have no immediate plans to come back to running it at this time, but never say never. I would love nothing more than to see chaotix or someone else make take a at my time though!
Great video. Speed running history is a very Niche category, we need more great videos like this well imformed well made made great sound. Ill be back for more videos
DW2 is probably the game I've sunken the most hours into. The long loading screens, the endless grinding and dungeon crawling, constant autopilots, memorizing every attack animation and the words they say. Its objectively a bad game but it made me who i am today ❤
@snakexpert552 Oh I definitely get what you mean! I've got a lot of the weird audio memorized myself! When I was young, I thought Frigimon was saying "Sub Zoro Lick-a-Punch!" For the Subzero Ice Punch attack 😂.
Hacing played only Digimon Cyber Sleuth on PC, I can imagine i only touched the shallowest depth of the digimon game sphere. Still, the grind still exists, and your narration makes it clear this ain't a game for the faint of heart. Still, digimon holds a special place in my heart and having found your channel makes me happy to enjoy the digital critters. Good work. Thanks for the video, loved it.
As much as it’s not a popular opinion and for some reason that I don’t get, I love this game!! I played this as a kid and it made me so mad because I didn’t understand the level cap system but, to this day, I play this game. It is for all in purpose a trash game but my favorite in the series.
Never finished the game, but I played it so much and spent so long on MetalKid's site that I got a whole new level of respect for it's mechanics. I'll probably go and beat it soon, when I find my own perfect balance and it doesn't become too easy. Also, when I get less than 99 hours at my own pace lol
Having owned the game, I'm both baffled and in awe at the patience of these speedrunners. I bought the game from Target for $4 back in the day. I still want my money back... If there's one thing I actually enjoyed, it was hearing Agumon's squeaky Pepper Breath in Japanese, evolving it up to Greymon and it keeping that same voice only when using Pepper Breath.
I chuckled at the "I want my 4$ back!" Part 😂. I think Agumon may be saying "Baby Flame" instead of "Pepper Breath", as the former is the name of his skill in the JP version (and the JP names are the ones that Digimon say in-game in World 2). Another example would be Biyomon. The text says "Spiral Twister", the English name of the attack, while the audio says "Magical Fire", which is the JP name. At least as far as I know ^_^. Apologies if I bored you with this info 😅.
@@CrystalPapa Ah yes, thank you for the correction. I had completely forgotten it's Baby Flame in Japanese x.x It's still silly though. If you start with the Data team, the Metal greymon can enable you to get a Prince Mamemon early on who has the most powerful counter technique in the game and some impressive defensive stats.
i did a speed run to this game in 2004, still playing on PS 1 back then and took almost 40 hours, using the same strategy catching tradeable digimons as early as possible. and yeah this game is a total pain to speed running, i'd rather doing speed run on digimon card battle or digimon world 3 rather than digimon world 2.. nice vid, this brings back so many memories
i was in elementary school. my parents only let me play the playstation for one hour a day. sometimes my father play DW2 too at night after he work, we have a shared save file and shared progress. you know it takes me and my father 3 years to finish this game. so people who can speedrunning DW2, big respect to you all
Honestly, I'm having fun finally going through World 2, but only because of ...external factors to speed things up and cheese things a bit. I cannot imagine playing this game raw. Or even trying to speedrun it like that.
Digimon Video that doesn't mention Pokemon at some point Challenge (Impossible) Jokes side, great vid! Always interests me how people speedrun games that aren't reliant on movement and glitches and moreso minmaxing existing mechanics to their fullest.
I just can't help bringing up Pokemans whenever I get the chance, since I really enjoyed the early Pokémon games a lot! 😅 I am glad you enjoyed the video, though! :D
Another annoying thing about this games leveling(even beyond level cap and limited enemy per domain visit) The way they gauge stats growth was to check for the species, check evolution stage, then they got their stats growth table based on that The stats growth table are basically only there for the first 10 levels of their evo stage which means once you can evo you should so have fun leaving and reentering domains
I think it's even worse. It's a set number range for each level (depending on the digimon's own growth rate) and if you get say, 22 on an Adult, you're screwed because you just lost the best 3-5 stat growth on atk and def. HP/MP has it's own thing, and speed is also separated. You only guarantee a point on atk and def up to 17/27/37 btw. Very complicated.
For long games like this speedrun rule supposedly allowed to pause the game time and take rest, but not more than 12/24hr rest so at least still get sleep and continue without to much prolonging the run
I played this game a lot when i was a kid but to hear that to beat the game even for the very first run took 30hrs is crazy! To then be reduced by roughly 13hrs is also insane to me! When i later played in my teenage years i learned how good Okuwamon can be because of his attacks but i never knew about whamons attacking being an attack debuff but i never really explored much with the attacks or a lot of the other digimon. While i honestly dont think i would ever do a speed run of this game, it may be fun to kind of go through the game and break down specific parts of the game to find out key points in the game like "grinding" which digimon to get/when including for DNA digivovle. One thing that does surprise me even though is by the end of the game they only have ultimates granted thats what speedruns are beat the game as fast as possible by bare minimum. While there is no solid evidence i feel around the 5th generation is when the digimon start really shine in terms of power from the DNA digivalutions. While im sure it's known the first metalgreymons you acquire are subpar(MP) from a speedrun point of view it makes sense to DNA digivolve it right away or as soon as possible since the max level is 27 even if you were to get it to that level youd need another ultimate at 25 to get it to a mega+tech and the time spent doing all that would be better suited in getting an ultimate. Gah there is a lot i could/want to say but the comment is already getting long enough.
I feel like DW2 is an attempt to make the games feel more like Pokemon, in a sense that to have a robust team you have to go wide instead of going deep in terms of partner digimons. Other Digimon World games focuses on a handful of digimons that may eventually branch off into various forms, but DW2 threw a wrench on that idea and really wanted you to, ehem, "catch 'em all" and experiment with them. I think it's an interesting direction they went with, shame that they tried to change everything else along the way compared to the original DW which made DW2 felt like it should be a spinoff title instead. Can't help but to think there are some influence from other dungeon-crawling games around that time such as Chocobo Dungeon that skewed the development in this direction.
Oh yes, the game was heavily influenced by a certain Dragon Quest Monsters game, or so I am told. I haven't played that one myself, but I've been told that World 2 really takes a lot from it!
@@CrystalPapa i can't imagine someone grinding out times for persona or hyperdimention neptunia. because at some point, it's not about strats. it's about who can mash through the game the fastest
God I remember trying to beat this as a kid and I never could. I just could not understand how the leveling system worked and always got bogged down with low level monsters
Fun video about a game I love. Couldn't even imagine someone could do a 30 hour run of this, much less sub 17 hours, but I guess it's possible if you don't obsess over your digimon's stats. I do feel the need to point out that you butchered the names here lol I wonder how much faster the runs would be on emulator, even without the speed up, Duckstation can cut the load times by more than half, making everything so much faster, cutting minutes in each battle. Actually, Duckstation makes the game way better, to the point I think the only flaw is not having instant evolution on EL11/21/31. The rest of the mechanics are so complicated and mesh so well that I have nothing but respect. Praise our Lord and Savior MetalKid for unveiling them!
This is an epic video thanks, where are the links of their channels? Please and thanks. 😅 The hardest battle I had in the game is not the last boss fight but the rank 9 last coliseum battle with jijimon If it wasn't for save states I would've to grind another 100 hrs 😂❤❤❤ love DW2.
Whaaat, no mention of my third place 72 hour finish (only like 40 hours behind smartball and chaotix) in the One-mon challenge race?? (jk, this was a really great video 🙂)
This game is pure suffering. Idk how I managed to beat it. A few months ago I tried to play it again with the intention of getting the move set I want but the game beat me even with emulation speed up tricks. I permanently scarred my friends brain with the wild digimon battle theme. Anytime I mention digimon he hums that theme 😂
the only problem with this game is the speed, that is all,if it got speed like Digimon Cyber Sleuth, then it is all good, but the game isnt as bad as people think it is. the leveling system is different but unique, nothing is really wrong with this game, exept speed. and not every game need to have speedrunning. i always thought this is one of the digimon mechanic need to come back,or remake to make it way better speedplay, and improved mechanic based on this digimon mechanic.
this was my first RPG XD after the clock froze after 99:99:99, i think I played more 20 hrs? (total 120hrs)to finish it as Gold Hawks, and... Gaia was too easy? I was in a capture mission (so not many good itens for a fight, lost everyone but 1 and the skull mamothmon that I caught there because of a return bug and killed it first try. And NO DNA, lv up take too long XD I played again after a few years, and tryed the other teams, but meh. virus have no defence and data have no atk.
I have a very soft spot for this trashfire game as I wiled away hundreds of hours on it as a kid. It's awful in so many ways, but it still makes me nostalgic as hell
Let me break down how DNA evolution works in this game, because until you know how it works, you have no idea how tedious and specific this game can be. -The video explained max levels and it explained needing to mix to raise it, but how do you KNOW how many max levels the new digimon will gain? Well you take the highest level of the digimon in the fusion, this is what we are increasing. Then you take the level of the second digimon and DIVIDE IT BY FIVE. So if your second lower level digimon is at 13, you are giving TWO max levels to the baby. if the lower digimon is at level 15, you're giving THREE levels to the newborn. -This is forcibly twisted by the Type triangle. in short: Vaccine beats Virus, Virus beats Data, and Data beats Vaccine. This goes into fusing as well. The Metal greymon you get is a vaccine. Now if you mix it with another vaccine, you get a vaccine baby. if you mix it with a Virus, you will get... A vaccine baby because Vaccine beats Virus. If you mix it with a Data digimon, the baby WILL be a data type. This can completely botch your intended growth if you tried to use the metal greymon to help get something like Grankuwagamon (virus) via fusing. -The resulting baby will be one evolution LOWER than the Lowest evolution level included in a fusion. IE: You fuse Metal greymon (ultimate) with an Airdramon (champion) and you will get a Rookie. You mix Wargreymon (mega) with a Devimon (champion) You will get a rookie. You mix two megas, you will get an Ultimate. -Every time you fuse, the baby gets 1DP or Digi Point. By getting more of these, you get technically stronger digimon and when you go to evolve your digimon, if you have enough, you'll often find the evolution is now a different digimon. This normally stops at 9DP. However the three super rare digimon (Omegamon, Diablomon, and Baihumon) require the digimon to have 20 or MORE. This will make it so your Metal greymon doesn't turn into Wargreymon anymore, it turns into Omegamon. now you know why people try to catch them instead of mixing to get them. And now you know why mixing is such a nightmare in this game.
This video proves that Blue Falcon s*cks 🤣🤣🤣 I enjoy playing this game. My only complaint is the grinding for exp ither than that, it's awesome. Hoping they'll remaster it with easy exp gain and many Digimon and techniques to learn.
The fans made a mod name digimon world 2 alternative make this game much more enjoyable i highly recomended to try it for those warrior who enjoy this horrible game 😂
This game was so bad that at the part where we catch Metal Greymon I had a couple of corrupt saves for some reason and couldn't get past that for a while. Like I'd get to that part then the save file would get corrupted by some weird reason or by my friend who turns off the ps1 while in the middle of saving and while it literally says "Do not turn off system". Also it was so long that I had to Gameshark that game just to finish it to skip a ton of grind for instant exp gains and max stats. Even with max stats the fucking last boss took a while to kill. It's a PS1 game that is worth using a Gameshark on just because the creators of the game were sadistic and no way in hell a 10~11 year old me would be able to finish it since I can only play for like 2 hours on a Friday and a couple hours here and there on the weekends.
While I do understand that you don't have pleasant memories associated with Digimon World 2, that friend of yours sounds a little unhinged for turning the PS1 off while the game is still saving 😅. Not THAT is scary!
I have completed DW1 5 times, DW 3 3/4 times, Digimon BCard 5 7-10 times, and never once ever completed DW 2... such a drag.... too much requirements and so damn slow even with emulator.
Digimon World 2 has the best battle system of the 3 games, Digimon World 3 is great but the battle system is the worst one, combine DW3 with DW2 battle system and you get Cyber Sleuth.
Very detailed video, expertise of the author really shows towards the run analysis. IMO the intro was the weakest part of the video, could've cut it out and the video would be better. Author would've seemed far more professional and focused on their subject if they jumped right to it instead of dawdling on Mario Kart and Pokemon.
I am glad you liked the video, Ran! I understand your criticism of the Intro, but it was more of a stylistic choice on my part. I do appreciate the feedback, though. I might try a different approach in the future!
People actually attempted to speedrun this game? Sure the game has its charm on a casual playthrough... But speedrunning a grindy, slow, obnoxious and annoying game like this? *Salutes to all who speed ran this and DID IT!*

Ah yes, a fellow person of culture, I see! 😇
Salute to this people who speed run Digimon World 2!
👏👏 those speed run digimon 2
Digimon Video that doesn't mention Pokemon at some point Challenge (Impossible)
Jokes side, great vid! Always interests me how people speedrun games that aren't reliant on movement and glitches and moreso minmaxing existing mechanics to their fullest.
I just can't help bringing up Pokemans whenever I get the chance, since I really enjoyed the early Pokémon games a lot! 😅
I am glad you enjoyed the video, though! :D
Another annoying thing about this games leveling(even beyond level cap and limited enemy per domain visit)
The way they gauge stats growth was to check for the species, check evolution stage, then they got their stats growth table based on that
The stats growth table are basically only there for the first 10 levels of their evo stage which means once you can evo you should so have fun leaving and reentering domains
Well I always went back to Digivolve when I could, but it good to know this!
@@kurokammi_Akio ultimately its kinda simple in execution since its just "evo asap" tbf lol
Speed had a 100 soft cap that i cba to understand lol
Nah, this game evokes the same nostalgic and warm feelings as the other 2 for me ❤
Well now i want to see how fast the glitch speedrun is!
Great recap!
There's a lot of extreme speedruns, but DW 2 is masochism
I am probably one of the few people who actually likes this game for what it is
as a child, this game took me an entire summer break
No way the record is being held for so long!
I know, it's crazy 🎃.
I love your dw2 videos
"They get a sick, perverted joy of it" Damn, this guy just HATES this game, huh?
Smart ball is drinking straight liquor by the end of this run lol 😂
After doing multiple speedruns of this game, it was needed 🤣.
Imagine how much longer the game could take if the devs actually balanced kuwagamon
I haven't played that one myself, but I've been told that World 2 really takes a lot from it!
can we all agree that if you speedrun an rpg, you are to be considered a danger to yourself and others?
Well there are some RPGs that aren't completely insane to speed run 😅.
But this one? Sure!
@@CrystalPapa i can't imagine someone grinding out times for persona or hyperdimention neptunia. because at some point, it's not about strats. it's about who can mash through the game the fastest
Kunemon is a beast at Speedruninng.
It's definitely the META!
@@CrystalPapa Yeah, He's good and he's only a caterpillar.
I do feel the need to point out that you butchered the names here lol
I wonder how much faster the runs would be on emulator, even without the speed up, Duckstation can cut the load times by more than half, making everything so much faster, cutting minutes in each battle.
Actually, Duckstation makes the game way better, to the point I think the only flaw is not having instant evolution on EL11/21/31. The rest of the mechanics are so complicated and mesh so well that I have nothing but respect.
Praise our Lord and Savior MetalKid for unveiling them!
time to dethrone this guy... i have quite the knowlagde
If you manage to do it, I'll cover your victory! 🎃
Thank you for the kind words, Rey! You can find the entirety of the runs on Speedrun.com
I've added a link in the description, too :).
1:18, wait what are the top two games on the top left? I see Digimon World 1 but what is to the right of it?
It's the same game - digimon world 1, but with JP cover. The one with MetalGreymon is for US versions of the game
Whaaat, no mention of my third place 72 hour finish (only like 40 hours behind smartball and chaotix) in the One-mon challenge race?? (jk, this was a really great video 🙂)
It could even be you
Me: No i wouldnt even dare try.
I feel like this video would get more views if the title was THE 40 HOUR LONG SPEED RUB
I dunno, Kirova. Speed Rubbing for 40 hours? I dunno if anyone wants to watch that much rubbing! 😬
@@CrystalPapa 40 Hour Rubbing ASMR 🤣
@@kirova2193 Please no 😅.
This is a super tough game to speedrun due to massive RNG. Still, it is one of my favourite digimon game.
Even ME, the viewer is watching this video on 2x speed
Im sorry for the people who experimented on this game
This game is pure suffering. Idk how I managed to beat it. A few months ago I tried to play it again with the intention of getting the move set I want but the game beat me even with emulation speed up tricks. I permanently scarred my friends brain with the wild digimon battle theme. Anytime I mention digimon he hums that theme 😂
the only problem with this game is the speed, that is all,if it got speed like Digimon Cyber Sleuth, then it is all good, but the game isnt as bad as people think it is.
the leveling system is different but unique, nothing is really wrong with this game, exept speed.
and not every game need to have speedrunning.
i always thought this is one of the digimon mechanic need to come back,or remake to make it way better speedplay, and improved mechanic based on this digimon mechanic.
this was my first RPG XD
after the clock froze after 99:99:99, i think I played more 20 hrs? (total 120hrs)to finish it as Gold Hawks, and... Gaia was too easy? I was in a capture mission (so not many good itens for a fight, lost everyone but 1 and the skull mamothmon that I caught there because of a return bug and killed it first try.
And NO DNA, lv up take too long XD
I played again after a few years, and tryed the other teams, but meh.
virus have no defence and data have no atk.
Yeah the game really isn't much of a Challenge, at all. It's one of its many, MANY shortcomings 😅.
I always break with digimon with silent hill ost.
25:13 HAHAHAHA damm video game addicted
That moment must've hurt! 😅
I have a very soft spot for this trashfire game as I wiled away hundreds of hours on it as a kid. It's awful in so many ways, but it still makes me nostalgic as hell
I'm waiting for someone to speedrun Alternative
25:23 auto me two puddeeee. favorite digimon o_o
This video proves that Blue Falcon s*cks 🤣🤣🤣
I enjoy playing this game. My only complaint is the grinding for exp ither than that, it's awesome. Hoping they'll remaster it with easy exp gain and many Digimon and techniques to learn.
DOOM is one of the "oldest games ever made" ??
Ah that was a little error on my part, kinda had the release date for it mixed up in my head 😅.
Desa, is that you?
Did the creators of Digmon World 2 draw inspiration from Dragon Warrior Monsters? It seems very similar to the old DWM game boy game
The fans made a mod name digimon world 2 alternative make this game much more enjoyable i highly recomended to try it for those warrior who enjoy this horrible game 😂
Hey Evan!
I am aware of the mod, and I do intend to cover it at some point! :D
I can only tolerate playing the game with emulator turbo. I can't imagine actually playing it without turbo for a speedrun lol.
It's not really a game more a form of torture. At least DW3 looked nice.
Those people are masochist
Hey, they are Heroes! 😇
😅😅 I play this game for 99 hours
Is it You though?
I can't play DW2 without an emulator with turbo speed on and sound muted. It is a grindy game af.
People actually attempted to speedrun this game?
Sure the game has its charm on a casual playthrough...
But speedrunning a grindy, slow, obnoxious and annoying game like this?
*Salutes to all who speed ran this and DID IT!*
They did it so we didn't have to 🤧.
Living in Pokemon's shadow is a very diplomatic way of saying pokemon beat it patootie so bad the franchise has one foot in the visual novel genre because that's the one realm gamefreak hasn't turned its infernal gaze toward.
Trade me a dogimon for my pokemon
31:15 love the meme!
