Really nice explanation, the diagrams are very helpful. But I just realized something I haven't seen addressed yet, which is a consequence of this time inversion physic model: if we aren't inverted we can't kill anyone inverted! The reason is that the inverted person must always exist up to the point they reversed their time. So anyone you see moving in reverse cannot die! By the same logic, if you see the reversed person heading to a sliding door, you also can't kill the non-reversed similar person that's simultaneously heading to the other sliding door. The only thing that can happen (as showed in the film) is to unkill an inverted person - ie: you see a dead body on the ground, he rises as you shoot a bullet that goes through him, and then he carries on his inverted live. Once he raises back to life, he can't be killed, it doesn't matter how hard you try. Obviously, the reverse also happens - an inverted person can never kill a non inverted person, in their perspective they can only unkill them. The irony here is, in a fight between you and an inverted person, even though you know you can't kill the other person, you can be killed! This is because each person sees their own time going forward (and you may die in your future) but you see the other person's time going backwards (and it's impossible for them to die at a time previous than now). So while you're fighting, you know you may die, and you know you can't kill the other guy. Unless the other guy is you, and you haven't experienced the other side of the fight yet - in that case you know you can't die, because you still have to fight on the other side. Really weird logic that comes out of this!
Neil died when he was inverted so this reasoning is flawed. I know what you mean, launching a lethal attack on an inverted person would just heal them for your perspective but that doesn’t mean they’re actually okay.
@Wesley The man that killed Neal wasn't fighting Neal. In his perspective he shot a bullet, but that bullet "unkilled" the dead body that was lying on the ground. Had he started fighting Neal after Neal got up, he would be unable to kill him. This logic isn't flawed, it is a direct consequence of the way time inversion works.
but remember that the "inverted" entropy/events are flowing against the more powerful current of entropy, so they get overpowered by that stronger flow and essentially "corrected" in the past. that's why inverted bullet holes, or an inverted injury, seem to manifest out of nowhere right before they are "undone". but also remember that when you invert, you are still traveling into "your" future. its all relative. Neal died while inverted, but he is still dead, because from his perspective he is still traveling to his "relative" future.
i also think that the act of rewatching Tenet is like a subtle interactive / participatory experience within the context of time inversion. watching it the second time made me feel like i went through the time inversion machine as well, now armed with new knowledge... understanding that what has happened, happened. that's just me, maybe :) i just liked the movie

That's like 5th video about it and I finally start to understand. Basically, it all depends on point of view: as you explained, someone can observe and experience the whole process (in, out, in) whilst outside observer will only see one event happening. It's still mind boggling, but I understand now why sometimes people were appearing and disappearing in those inverters 😎
Wow. This is so weird. I've recently had so many complex questions that have been absolutely mind-bending to me, questions that couldn't be answered by tens and tens of posts & videos, but then there is just that one post/video that answers it with absolute ease. This video literally answered how inversion works for me in 12 minutes, yet I spent probably over 2 hours reading posts and looking at videos to get a grasp on how exactly it works. Thank you!
(MINOR SPOILERS) IMO, the difficulty in understanding this film wasn't the character inversion, it was the inverted objects interaction with the non-inverted world. For example, the bullet holes in the freeport glass made by inverted bullets. Does the movie imply that these holes existed from the moment the glass was made? If not, when do they first appear? Similar but different problem with the cars on the freeway. How did the (non-inverted) Saab get to the point of being upside down on the freeway in the regular world?
@@childeroland2569 this is correct and is shown in the movie. the protagonist and neil know they are about to get attacked during the freeway chase because all of the sudden one of the rear view mirrors on their car just cracks out of nowhere. then the inverted car rams into them on the side of the cracked mirror and it gets fixed. The collision fixes the mirror. Before this happens they see the tire marks on the freeway appear out of nowhere then the inverted car flies down the tracks , erasing them the tracks and ramming into their car. from the protagonists perspective cause and effect are reversed because they are not inverted , the effect appears then the cause erases the effect. from the inverted attacker's perspective in the car everything looks normal, they create the streaks on the ground from swerving and they hit the car causing the crack in the mirror. causality is reversed from the normal perspective but looks normal during the inverted perspective
A crack in the mirror appearing suddenly, which I doubt it did, doesn’t mean its cause is approaching sooner rather than later. It’s just going to happen at some point.
It is unclear if the car that crashed was inverted. Assuming it was, because otherwise some weirdER 💩 went down, the crash was cleaned up my Ives’ team in the past. So, in forward time, Ives’ team provided the pieces to an exploded car and then it reformed via reversed explosion after tPro was placed back into the car. They reverse left before that explosion and the car spontaneously UNflips as Neil, Sator, snd tPro approach from different time vectors. You know what UNhappens from there.
Very well done! Clear and concise and easy to grasp. You should consider using this sort of presentation to explain some of the more complex scenes in Tenet, like the final battle and the freeway chase. There are other overviews available but your flowchart and perspective based view is the best format demonstrating the complexities of time inversion I have seen!
When watching the movie I was like: "Well, I guess that's a cool concept, you can go back in times or smth" but only after this video did I actually grasp how complex and logical the movie is
At the very very end when 'you' go back in time forever...well, you won't keep going forever, but rather until you die. So that means at some point in the normal timeline, people have the opportunity to watch a dead body begin spontaneously forming on the ground, then compose into a really old man, then the old man gets up and starts walking backward...
Thank goodness NONE of the characters have to do that in the film at all as they only use the machines for short distance missions and completing short obstacles as that's a massive relief not to go through for the cast of characters' goals and missions.
Best explanation and portrayal of time inversion in TENET of all the videos out there. Simple with great visuals and explanation. Thank you!! What I still don't understand is the effect of when you are inverted and you interact with your inverted self. The movie says you would be annihilated which makes sense but it doesn't happen when the protagonist fights himself. I feel that any direct interaction between an inverted and uninverted body would create a loop and stop existing.
You would only be annihilated if your past (regular time) self does not expect to run into the future (reverse time) self. This is because if your past self doesn’t expect to see the inverted self yet sees it, the past self might change their course of action, which means they might not end up walking into the time inversion machine, in turn your current/future self would exist as you didn’t end up going into the machine. *KEY POINT:This is the case in the movie’s protagonist vs protagonist fight scene because the old protagonist didn’t know who that reversed agent was (note: the pre-inverted self said all his moves were countered). Once he inverts himself, he knows he can interact with the older self as long as he doesn’t show his face, and in such manner he fights himself and finishes the choreography. When his inverted self is fighting, he would have remembered how his old self fought to counter all his moves and make his escape from Freeport. Hope this makes sense
Also I noticed there were never any interactions of the same person going the same direction in time, so maybe they avoid that like the plague (closest was Kat seeing future Kat diving but didn't know who she was so that's ok).
Don't forget, the woman who debriefed the protagonist also suggested that they wear different full-body coverings. When we look at the Protagonist vs protagonist fight, the inverted Protagonist is wearing a full body SWAT suit and the uninverted protagonist is wearing a business suit. If any of the protagonists skin were to come into contact with the inverted protagonist's skin, he would be annihilated.
Just imagine all those including me having to research out this stuff after watching a movie :) Few more Nolans and we have more physicists in the next few years :)
If I was ever inverted, my mind couldn’t handle it cause I’m always indecisive, I feel like if you were to go through that machine you’d have to have a focused goal in mind
One of the best explanation about Time Inversion. Especially last example of friendship was just awesome. Thank you. I had to really slow down the time :) to understand it but now finally I get a good grip of the movie.
Brilliant!! There is one thing though.. From the time flow diagram, one can infer that, if a person is alive then there must be odd number of versions at any one instant of "real world" time. In the third story when the protagonist goes through the sliding door and travels back, there are only two versions... which means he dies in the past. :)
What about the scene in tenet where normal protagonist (un inverted person) catching a bullet (inverted gun), who actually shooting that gun, when they start founding that weird bullet and how the hell they know the protagonist is a man who gonna pull the trigger
Thank you for the excellent video, sharing it now. I was finally able to watch tenet just now and luckily found this video! Huge help for understanding the brilliant concept Nolan imagined!
Wow. This helped me unlock a key to the principle of Tenet: AT ANY ONE TIME, THERE IS ONLY ONE COPY OF YOU AND YOUR INVERTED DOUBLE. Your timeline starts when you are born until you walk through an inversion machine. Simultaneously, your double's timeline starts by walking backwards out of the machine and living your whole life backwards upto the day you are born. When you walk out the other end of an inversion machine, to anyone that watched you, you basically entered and vanished. They have no sight of the inverted world. To them, the world is going on without you. In reality, you did not vanish, you walked out the other end and are now existing in a world that is moving backwards towards the moment you were born. In this world, you live alongside your inverted double who has no choice but to re-live your whole life backwards from the date you entered the machine, to the moment of your birth. You on the other hand, can affect things in the inverted world. You can for instance lie low in the inverted world long enough to watch it move backwards to a point when you want to change something e.g. stop a bomb from going off. You can for instance wait to the time ten days before the bomb went off to then walk through an inversion machine in the inverted world. When you walk out the other end, the world starts moving forward again from that point. You can use your knowledge of all the events that will happen up until the bomb detonates, to change those events so the bomb never goes off. You cannot tell these events to others as you may risk them acting differently to change these events, which may mean the bomb still goes off, just through different series of events. Your double is no longer visible to you in forward moving time but infact exists and simultaneously walked backward out of the second machine. He will also simultaneously relive your life walks backwards including walking back through the first inversion machine, all the way to the day you were born. Hope this helps those that are still confused 🙃
Its good all except the bomb thing. What ever happend, happens. If you know about a bomb going off when you are non inverted and want to stop it by going inverted for a few days, go uninverted again days before the bomb to stop it or change how it happens, it will still happen the way it allways happend, it going off while you do all these things trying to stop it. What happend, happens.

Unless the other guy is you, and you haven't experienced the other side of the fight yet - in that case you know you can't die, because you still have to fight on the other side. Amazing video ! 2 years i've been trying to understand the mechanism of Tenet and you just sum it up in a 12min video. Incredible work, the story at the end is just wow !
Thank you, I was waiting for someone to put it into pictures. Can you please do another explaining inverted bullets and temporal pincers, still don't get it.
Glad you liked it! I may make another video soon.
@@phdeng3827 PLS DO
An award winning movie could be created from the last minute of this video
Like everything in CS, I need a guy on youtube to explain it to me. Best explain ever.
This is a brilliant explanation! With a twist at the end!
That final story was so cool. I expect that you invert yourself to go and save your friend but then it turns out you're the one who shoots your friend. You are the man with the gun. Wew lad
why?)
U could just watch how he saves you and undertand it. Or even hang out with him,but now you know that he will die by saving u
@@oracleharbinger9729 It's just a fun interesting twist added to the story at the end of the video that the uploader said and this guy wants to chip in. No harm done but it's a very cool idea to know you're actually the guy who ends up killing you're friend, that's crazy to think about and the movie had something similar to that, It was basically the relationship friendship between The Protagonist and Neil. Neil WAS that friend. Love seeing those two together!
God sent person to explain this to us. Kudos
Thanks for you compliment!
Thank you! This is the best explanation. Very basic but so many other explanations skip the basics.
Thanks!
I wouldn't have known that this aspect is what people didn't get about Tenet. Interesting!
Wow, somebody must have gotten laid in philosophy 101
That ending twist though
That's like 5th video about it and I finally start to understand. Basically, it all depends on point of view: as you explained, someone can observe and experience the whole process (in, out, in) whilst outside observer will only see one event happening. It's still mind boggling, but I understand now why sometimes people were appearing and disappearing in those inverters 😎
Thank you this video definitely helped me with the whole confusion about the movie "TENET."
How did the (non-inverted) Saab get to the point of being upside down on the freeway in the regular world?
i think the holes just appear at some point, like the protagonist's knife wound.
Of all the videos trying to explain inversion, this one is the best.
Thanks so much for this explanation. I was trying to figure out why a mask wasn't needed and your explanation of 2nd inversion explains it!
That time flow thing really helped to understand it thank you!
Mind blown,,, never thought there would be a tutorial on how to watch a movie.
the last part is beautiful.
Glad you like it!
I also agree this video explains the most important concept of Time Inversion
Best explanation of tenet ive seen ! Many thanks 👍🏻
You are very welcome : )
I never realized that from the perspective of the observer they both vanish lol. Thanks for the explanation.
When watching the movie I was like: "Well, I guess that's a cool concept, you can go back in times or smth" but only after this video did I actually grasp how complex and logical the movie is
Wonderful explanation.. Nobody can explain better than this.. How simply explained such a complicated plot.. 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
It was confusing like hell, but u made it heaven without spoiling 👏👏👏👏👌👌👌
Best explanation and portrayal of time inversion in TENET of all the videos out there. Simple with great visuals and explanation. Thank you!!
What I still don't understand is the effect of when you are inverted and you interact with your inverted self. The movie says you would be annihilated which makes sense but it doesn't happen when the protagonist fights himself. I feel that any direct interaction between an inverted and uninverted body would create a loop and stop existing.
Thanks! Yes the interaction is very confusing. I don't quite understand it.
LOL well thank goodness we don't have go through that lol. Would still be nice tho to experience it at least once. Might be REALLY fun.
One of the best explanation about Time Inversion. Especially last example of friendship was just awesome. Thank you. I had to really slow down the time :) to understand it but now finally I get a good grip of the movie.
I got goosebumps at the end man. Fantastic stuff. I’ve already seen it btw hence the goosebumps.
This is by far the best explanation.
I'm so glad I discovered this video, thanks for the explanation.
Glad that you liked it : )
After watching this, it makes so much more sense
Best Explaination about the movie on Internet!
6:40 Wow, I never got that.
Me too holycrap
Great video man! Please could you explain with the same diagrams the principles of the temporal pincer?
Thank you for the excellent video, sharing it now. I was finally able to watch tenet just now and luckily found this video! Huge help for understanding the brilliant concept Nolan imagined!
Glad you like it!
Everyone in the comments: this is the best explanation on the internet!
Me who still doesn't get it: *just smile and wave boys*
Damn this makes the interrogation scene in the turnstile scene more understandable. Thats why the soldier said, "saito went to the past"
That last scenario *totally unrelated with the movie* make me cry again
Great explanation. Big clearance of many problems I had in understanding Tenet.
I've been searching for something as clear as this video for days... thank you so much!
You are very welcome!
Literally the best explanation out there. Kudos
Thanks!
By far the best explanation I've seen. It's such a complicated idea to show visually but you did it!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video! Great content!
This is even more helpful
Its good all except the bomb thing. What ever happend, happens. If you know about a bomb going off when you are non inverted and want to stop it by going inverted for a few days, go uninverted again days before the bomb to stop it or change how it happens, it will still happen the way it allways happend, it going off while you do all these things trying to stop it. What happend, happens.
Thank you!! Now I feel like I understand this more. Now I wanna watch the movie again with this new knowledge 😂
OH my GOD, my head just EXPLODED
I loved Tenet to death, but reviewers and essayists gave it a hard time saying it lacked character and emotion. The story this guy told at the end proves that you CAN tell and very interesting personal story with this concept. Unfortunately I doubt it'll ever happen, but Tenet NEEDS a sequel. Its just too good a concept to let die in one movie
2 Tenet 2.
Amazing explanation, now that it's on HBO Max, I can watch it and understand it better, never seen it, so I'm so excited! 🙌😃
