    I could be wrong, but my impression of *_adaptive_** ANC* with Sony and even other brands, is much like you stated. If one is in a controlled environment, sounds are less chaotic. Perhaps it will adapt to an air conditioning sound that's just kicked in, and has then remained constant. But if you're in a place where traffic is driving by, it's trying to adapt to a sound that just occurred and then it stops. And then another car goes by, and it tries to adapt and then it stops. Intermittent sounds, appear to essentially breed intermittent adaptability.
    Basically, what I'm seeing is how the adaptability is greatly dependent on how long the new sound will be present.
    Again, that's been my impression. Am I misinterpreting this?

    I've had these headphones for 6 months at daily, around 10h use, the adaptive ANC can be bisabled via their Headphones- app.
    Only critiques I can say;
    1. The earmuffs doesn't hold their shape really well for a long time, they compress, and unfortunately, Sony doesn't offer replacements.
    There are an option for xm5 from 3rd party sellers, but I'd rather stick to the originals.
    2. There's no IP rating, so these are no-go for a nice rainy day walks.
    3. The left earcup picks up inconsistent high-pitched noises really effectively ( a fork screetching the plate, rustling etc.) but blocks them better in right. It can be annoying while you have them on just with the ANC without any playback as I regularly do.
    (I don't know is this a build-on error, or what causes this effect, please let me know if you do).

    • @mikebergman1817
      @mikebergman1817 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@missmygamergirl445 It depends.. Is she going to be using them while working out or doing yard work, or being active?? If she'd just going to be using them at home or at work, while working at a computer or hanging out in a controlled environment, then these Sony Xm5's are the best imo. The only reason they aren't the very best is because they have this adaptive ANC that uses some AI algorithm that adjusts the strength of the noise cancelling, based on the volume of whatever is making noise in the immediate area, and also pressure changes. Like wearing them inside a vehicle with the window open, and the air blowing in, causing the air pressure inside the vehicle to change slightly. In that case, it will hunt for the right level of noise cancelling and annoy the shit out of you, rather than just letting you set the level you want and leave it there. Some people will tell you that you can turn this adaptive ANC off or on, and I'm telling you right now that they are wrong. The people who say this are talking about the "auto optimizer" which just senses whether you're sitting or standing or traveling in a vehicle, or being active. Even the strongest ANC setting with these headphones have the adaptive ANC running constantly. If that could be locked at the highest level or any level, I feel these would be the best ANC headphones money can buy. But like I said, if she is going to be using them in a calmer environment, they will be amazing.

I was very impressed with the ANC of the Dyplay Urban Traveller and in comparison the more mainstream and recent Anker Soundcore Life Q30 seemed mediocre for most background sounds. I just wish the Dyplays had a transparency mode and didn't automatically power off.
    I've been looking for other options in the sub-100$ price point but there doesn't seem to be much new. The Monoprice BT600 and Tranya H10 seem promising but are also "older" at this day and age. Did you measure the XM5 on an Apple device (Macbook/Mac, iPad, iPhone).
    The AAC implementation is really weak with these on Apple devices, limited to 127kbps according to Console on OSX causing lots of artefacts and probably limiting its range as well, sound is really muffled. On Android with SBC and LDAC sound is close to perfect, especially with some EQ (lowering bass, adding lots of upper treble).
    Wondering if Apple would allow us to disable AAC streaming in favor of SBC which is clean or Sony could finally fix their AAC decoders. The in-ear XM4s suffer from the same problem: th-cam.com/video/Te8rVJuZP7k/w-d-xo.html
    What I agree with though is the super annoying adaptive ANC feature.

    I'm having a different issue with the xm5s. The headband is uncomfortable, it digs into my skull after roughly 2 hours of wear, probably due to the very narrow padding. All my other headphones are Sennheisers and have generous padding.
    Am I wearing them wrong? Do I need to wear them more to break them in? I'm seriously considering returning them.

    Why are the microphones in such high priced headphones always so bad? Also AirPods Pro Gen2. Clients and colleagues always complaining. It is better to use built in laptop microphone.

    Great call quality and better ANC are the only reasons I'd replace my XM3s. Sony will either fix their ANC weirdness on the XM5 or suffer serious sales losses. I love my HD600 and HD650 cans but never considered Sennheiser for this application due to poor ANC. The Momentum 4 might change that.

    I've been using the XM5s for over a month now and so far the only complaint I have is the comfortability of the headset. Whenever I lean forward or backwards, the headset slightly slips off, making me readjust it constantly. And the headband hurts my head (lol) after wearing it for an hour or two. But so far, I am still fond of how the headset operates.

    I love how when reviewers get new products or about to get new products ....all of sudden the previous praised item is crap....I truly wonder how much difference the audiophile sound profile will make when you get the Sennheiser in for your review. Will they be put down too for the bass bleed into mids? Or will the shinny new product get all the praise once again.

    I think i will not switch to any new xm until they bring the folding back, that is a downgrade to do that, especially with the 30mm drive also, it's obvious that sony is trying to spend less and gain more money, most of companies do this as soon as their product becomes popular.

    Mine went back the same day, I just found them too uncomfortable. They pinched my ear and the pressure from the thin headband was hard to ignore after wearing them for 20 minutes or so. They did not feel premium quality at all. Compared to an old set of Sennheiser HD598s, these felt cheap. The ANC was okay, but no better than cheap foam ear plugs. Sound quality was variable, but again, my old wired cans were just as good. Not impressed, considering the glowing reviews and money I spent.

      What's your issue with the earcups?

    • @zirak93-2
      @zirak93-2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MadLadsAnonymous The drivers inside the earcup hits the tip of my ears. Having them on my head for a prolonged time will lead to headaches and ear fatigue. At least that's what I experienced with the Xm4. Considering that the Xm5 wasn't hugely bigger, I would think I have the same issue with them. Then again, our ears are shaped differently. You may not experience this issue.
      When it comes to comfort, Bose is number one. The way the cups are made to be very roomy, even for big ears, is just ingenious.

      @@zirak93-2 Sorry to say this but you must have massive ears lol I don't have small ears and I can wear mine all day long. Maybe headphones are not for you or you are just looking at the wrong type? The whole point of portable headphones is being portable so ear cups are always going to be on the smaller side than say an open back non portable headphone. So maybe try IEM's?

    • @zirak93-2
      @zirak93-2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TBMartin I get you, but it still doesn't change the fact that I get ear fatigue at the tip of my ears with the Xm4 after a couple of hours. I experienced it a couple of times the week I had them in addition to trapping a lot of heat making you sweat a lot. Although I experienced the headband pain (which fades away after using headsets for a couple of weeks), I never experienced any ear faituge with the Bose QC 35 ii. I am quite sure it's something with the ear cups on the Sony's. Trust me, I am not the only one and it's actually true that the drivers are closer to your ears than the Bose's. Also, if you notice how the earcups of the Sony and Bose's headset are made, you immediately notice that the Bose have a deeper room at the back part of the earcup, while the Sony's are a straight line in the whole earcup.

We should know better than to trust the glowing reviews online. These are not portable either.

    Hi Aaron, Thanks for the detailed review of XM5, I was also searching if XM4 or XM5 can be used for Video Editing as well, as I read we have equalising app for XM and Sennheiser Momentum 4 so I guess we would get original sound in both while editing. But still I found XM listed as a headphone that can be used for Audio Editing/ Video Editing but not Momentum, it is a surprise.
    What is your verdict on Using a "wireless" Sony XM4 or XM5 OR Momentum 4 for video editing or using Sennheiser (wired) HD300 Pro or HD400 Pro or HD599 Special Edition?

    I tend to think people want foldable headphones, and they changed from a foldable version to a non-foldable version, so people aren't buying the new XM5. Every review I saw when they released immediately pointed out this glaring flaw, and people aren't interested in having the most important features of tech removed in the next generation.
    Not that these issues will be creating a positive perception of them. Still, I think it's the lack of folding and the privilege of paying more for not having the defining feature on this generation, that's the real issue.

    • @TBMartin
      @TBMartin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually see where Sony are going with this design. The foldable design is actually not needed when you got sound passthrough. The issue is from the consumers who want a design that is actually not needed and its not on the XM5. You don't need a foldable design when you have things like sound passthrough, speak to chat and touch to chat. Why would you want to have a foldable design when the user will be relying on them features anyway? Its far easier to just touch the side of the XM5 to say thanks to the bus driver when getting off than taking them off and putting them round your neck to say thanks to the bus driver. You are not thinking logically

    My top two that I *HATE*. You can't even pair them to a Playstation 5 you know, a sony product! damn well over 800 in hardware alone and they can't even work together, the 3.5mm jacks do work but you lose a lot of features of the XM5 such as touch vol control. Sony doesn't release the codec on micrsoft Windows and it absolutely trashes the quality on the "handsfree AG Audio" producing loud buzzing for other VOIP users. That said I love these headphones it's just a shame Sony doesn't allow it to work with other cool things like PS5's.

    Hello Aaron
    Greetings from Santiago de Chile.
    Aaron a question if you can help me friend.
    I bought a Sony WF1000MX4, watched your videos and recommendations, and made the decision for these headphones.
    I found out at home in a completely quiet room that turning on ambient sound or noise cancellation on the left earbud produces a permanent or screeching sound in both modes, it only goes away when you turn both modes off.
    This noise only has the left earphone.
    The right earphone works perfectly in ANC or ambient mode.
    My question is this noise normal?
    The noise is similar to being inside an empty tunnel in the left earphone?
    Thanks aaron, greetings from Chile. South America
