    I agree, the default is too muffled. I ended up using "Bright" which is similar to your settings, and even excellent for classical music. That setting also decreases the base too. I ended up to a similar sounding to my previous headphone, the Bose NC 700, only that the Sony is MUCH better especially with classical music, the Bose is just too flat with something like the 4 seasons from Vivaldi despite the fact it's default EQ setting is similar to the XM5's Bright setting. But the Bose NC 700 is 3 years old now, it would be interesting to see a Bose NC 800 or something.

    Im a sucker for a flat sound, so if u have XM3 try this: 25Hz -5dB Q0.33, 45Hz -5dB Q0.33,135Hz -9dB Q1, 9kHz -7dB Q1.5. (in Windows use Equalizer APO) When I get my hands on XM5 I'll post for them too.

    Thank you for sharing your settings. I personally never EQ, I'm one of those firm believers in stock sound tuning. But I was underwhelmed with my XM5's sound when I received them, especially coming from Sennheiser headphones. Tried your settings and they sound much better now. Much less bloat and muddiness I was hearing before. Turning down the clear bass setting definitely helped alot. And touching up the mid to high frequencies a smidge gives it more clarity without sounding bright. Great work. I just wish Sony offered a 10-band EQ for more precise tuning.

    As a lawn service guy who is in a loud environment pretty much all day everyday I was so excited for this headphones, specially for the noise cancelling. I was disappointed when I tried them on and the "noise cancelling" levels kept going all over the place and sometimes it made the noise worse. • @mikebergman1817

      No, you are 100% right. It's most likely the auto-optimizer adjusting for different volumes outside. I think mine still do it, even with the auto-optimizer turned off. I'm hoping they fix this in their next firmware update. I like the ANC more on these XM5's more than my XM3's, because it's better quality.. But the ANC goes all over the place, and annoys me. Then they shut off randomly, and also stutter when listening through bluetooth. Like you'll miss a couple of words here and there. Lets hope a new firmware comes along and fixes them. I'm currently on 1.1.1 (If I recall correctly..)

    Idk why the xm4 just sounds way better to my ears even after tweaking the xm5.. I own both and kind of regret buying the xm5 .. xm4 noise cancelling isn’t that bad and is still top of the line ..
    xm5 given the choice again, I’d 100% stick to my xm4 and save the money for Bose NC 800 coming soon and it’s probably going to blow xm5 out the water.. and remember , bose is like the father of all noise cancelling headphones .. can’t wait to see what bose would have to offer, competition is a great thing so props to Sony for shaking things up in the noise cancelling headphones market.

Already you have made available lots of videos for side by side comparison which are very helpful but with EQ modified settings it would have been extremely helpful. 😁

    I love keeping equalizer off and love to listen music that way! Guess that the most natural way to appreciate music the way it's recorded. Twisting with equalizer made high, low and mid frequencies shifts and that either overshadow or undershadow other frequencies, which changes the balance of natural recorded sound in studio! This is personal thought and liking only!

      My biggest complaint with these headphones is that the ear cups aren't deep enough. I don't find them uncomfortable, but my ears also touch the lining and I don't like that.
      I don't consider myself an audiophile so they sound pretty good out of the box to me, but I did decrease the bass. These aren't as muddy sounding out of the box as previous models though. The main reason I didn't buy the XM4 was because I found the sound to be too muddy.

      Finnish magazine *HIFImaailma 6/2021* (it's all in Finnish) tested Sony WH-1000XM4's. They showed their EQ-settings, too. Which I have'nt tested yet. So, feel free to comment.
      They mentioned that Sony's EQ (in the app) affects the sound only via Bluetooth. XM4's got minuses, for example, from its excessive bass.
      In case of "HIFImaailma", my expectation is that excessive upper Bass/lower mids is something they will attack first. Even with the cost of bit too weak low/mid Bass (Sony's app has only one general Bass setting...).
      *Basic EQ of the Sony WH-1000XM4's mobile application*
      400: 0
      1k: 0
      2.5k: +5 (yes, they only moved this one, to plus five)
      6.3k: 0
      16k: 0
      Clear BASS: -4 (minus four)
      *Equalizer APO*
      120 Hz, -3 dB, shelf correction* (low)
      132 Hz, -3 dB, Q: 0.9
      1 110 Hz, +3 dB, Q: 3
      1 490 Hz, -5 dB, Q: 4
      2 470 Hz, +6 dB, Q: 2.5
      5 070 Hz, -7 dB, Q: 8

      8 130 Hz, -7 dB, Q: 7.6
      9 000 Hz, -3 dB, shelf correction* (high)
      *) In Finnish: hyllykorjain (hylly = shelf).
      Few years earlier, that same magazine has tested XM2's (4/5 stars). Without any EQ-settings, *if* I remember right...
      Quick search didn't find XM3's or XM5's, so perhaps they haven't tested those.

    • @eukariootti1
      @eukariootti1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My own "Aaarghh, I give up!" -settings* *for XM4's* seem to be (vs. HIFImaailma):
      400: -1 (one dB less than HIFImaailma)
      1k: 0 (same)
      2.5k: +2 (three dB's less than HIFImaailma) 🤔
      6.3k: -1 (one dB less than HIFImaailma)
      16k: 0 (same)
      Clear BASS: -3 (one dB higher than HIFImaailma)
      *) I remember going back forth, in 2021 propably, while testing several very different songs. Including sharp distortion guitars (I wonder how +5@2.5 will sound now....), thumping low bass, female vocals, audiobooks...)
      I very rarely listen to rap, hiphop or rnb. Or metal with mostly "growling type" vocals. Unless they're part of the sound track etc.

      This is the one that came with Sony's app. There are others with more bands of course but it's beyond the scope of this video. Used Wavelet for a while but not in love with it.

    I'm so disappointed with the XM5s :(
    Even with Clearbass at max and on top of that turned up with the Samsung settings app the bass is very weak and anemic. My old XM3s sound a lot better with a more fun and punchy sound.

    • @gwapster13
      @gwapster13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That must be a defective unit. Out of the box the XM5 should be (too) bassy.

    • @lukastemberger
      @lukastemberger ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gwapster13 It's not... I've heard another pair of the same headphones. The bass is way too weak on these and you can't get that nice deep rumble like on the XM3 or 4.
      I think I'll get the XB910, they might sound better...

    • @gwapster13
      @gwapster13 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lukastemberger Or maybe the fit isn't good for you? I know audio is very subjective, but it's very surprising to know that someone finds XM5's bass too weak. For some reason, you might not be getting the bass that it actually has. That's puzzling.

  • @eukariootti1

    Sony's own EQ seems still the same, i.e. dissappointing. Since they're still aiming towards more upper bass (around *150 Hz* ):
    * At least for me, 16 kHz is bit too high for a basic 5-band EQ (even teens don't always hear ~16 kHz)
    * *400 Hz is way too high* as the lowest setting for any EQ
    * Yes, there is that Bass slider, but... you can't use it to set preferred low/mid Bass, while *simultaneously* reducing upper bass/low mids.
    * There isn't a *Hi-Fi preset,* i.e. one giving as straight response as possible.
    * There isn't a Parametric EQ (frequency + width/narrowness, i.e Q-value + level). Sony offered them ages ago for AV Receivers.
    * You can't "lock" headphones to one specific EQ-mode, no matter the usage case (cord/cordless etc.).
    On the other hand... XM5's NC and long-term comfort seem to be further improved from XM4's. Those are major plusses for any NC headphones.
    Also, _in some use scenarios,_ it's possible to use external EQ as a work-around.
    I'm currently owner of XM2's (ear pads are visibly worn out and slightly too small, bit too much upper Bass/lower mids...) and XM4's (I almost returned them, because of the excessive upper Bass/lower mids...).
    I soon gave up on Hi-Fi and just searched more bearable compromise. By reducing the upper Bass.
    I tried to use XM4's simultaneously with both the mobile phone & Windows. But in long term, it just was too buggy. Perhaps the latest SW is much better vs. one several months ago?
    In noisy office etc., XM's can be smarter choice, than any expensive Hi-Fi headphones.
    It's just that with little more effort, they could be so much better...

      Pretty sure the chances of Sony offering a pEQ are lower than Apple offering any EQ at all with their headphones. It sucks that these products are so dumbed for the average consumer. Like you say, it wouldn't be a huge amount of effort to include it.
      The included EQ is enough to make these sound bearable, fortunately.

    How close it sounds to Momentum 4 after playing with the EQ? Cz, I'm confused between them because I don't want to compromise on call quality and ANC, but also the I don't like the muddy audio of XM5 in the default EQ as audible in these videos.

However, right now, my Arctis Pro Wireless gaming headset sounds much better. So much more crisp and clear. These Sony's sound like I have earmuffs on muffling the outside audio. Out of the box garbage.

I really wanna get the XM5 but every time I connect the XM5 from the display store to the Sony headphones app I couldn't fully use the features such as the toggle between ANC and Ambient, I also cannot activate LDAC unlike my XM4 earbuds.
