    I’m trying to get the nerve up to rebuild my own 1980 Corvette manual transmission. I can rebuild carburetors and I have a press, so I think I’m mechanically inclined. Your videos are amazing, you make it look easy even though I know it’s not. I can tell you know your stuff! I agree with your mods and techniques. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!

    I went through trade school for auto mechanics in the mid 70s we had to pack the bearings with the wheel bearing grease and no one was wearing gloves back then. I messed up when I trusted one of the instructors that got me a job at a marine shop that was supposed to send me to evinrude school so I never worked in a auto shop and never went to evinrude school

    • @GearBoxVideo

      If you disconnect all linkage components and physically cannot move the 1-2 shift shaft by itself out of the 2nd gear position, a few things usually happen. The rings flatten out and the 3 little keys slip out of the slider and wedge the slider in 2nd gear position, A missed shift can sometimes tear up the teeth of the slider and jam the mashed teeth on the hub and rarely a detent comb breaks in the cover and jams the mechanism up. If you do disconnect the linkage and it easily is moved manually out of 2nd gear position, then it may be time for a new linkage. Visit www.munciebook.com for book updates. Thanks for getting the book.

    cool, thanks for pointing out the fact that wheel bearing grease is ok to use for this..that's what i used on my m20 and then wondered if it was ok. a lot of guys say grease and then come to find out they use assembly lube like you use but call it grease. I'm curious why there are no caged bearing available for these like you use in your spec-25?

    • @GearBoxVideo

      The SPEC-25 is mostly run in 3rd and 4th. There is no severe loads in 1st. I want full support of all the needles on a street / strip transmission.

    • @GearBoxVideo

      Autogear discontinued the M21 countergear. They still make the M20 piece which we still stock. Those are made in Italy. The reality is, if you are mixing gears, used gears against new gears, getting a Taiwanese M21 cluster is fine. The new Italian M20 sets are a great redesign. Info is here: goo.gl/0zWCaF

    Just curious, what is the clearance between the OD of the counter gear spacer tube and the ID of the counter gear bore? Once assembled, the counter gear shaft can never touch the tube because it rides on the needle bearings, correct?

    • @GearBoxVideo

      Yes correct. The Muncie tube ID is a little over 1"

    The shop manual for the 1963 Studebaker Avanti shows the T-10 4 speed needles and spacer washers in the countershaft in a different sequence. It shows needles against the countershaft bearing roller, followed by two spacer washers, the next set of needles and then an outer spacer washer. Does it matter or is one way better than the other?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shop manual is wrong. The correct way is in the video

    • @michaelfloat5188
      @michaelfloat5188 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GearBoxVideo Over the past few days I did an extensive amount of research on this and finally found the answer. I reviewed the expoded views of earlier T-10's from many other makes and models and they all had the double spacer washers and no spacer washer agianst the countershaft bearing roller. The reason for this is that on the earlier T-10's the countershaft bearing roller was seamless. Somewhere along the way the T -10's and Muncie 4 speed countershaft bearing roller started to be built with a seam and the need for an inner spacer washer became a necessity.

    I just took apart an m20 out of my daughter's '69 SS el Camino and fond 7 of the spacer rings in the counter gear but, didn't see where the 7th ring was. If I install the 7th ring, the total bearing length is still shorter than the thrust faces.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are only 6 spacers and when stacked sit below the thrust surface. Some rings vary in size. If you need to stack an extra stack it against the tube

    • @GearBoxVideo

      Pay attention to the size of the needles in the video. You probably have a 7/8 inch countershaft which uses less needles. You are doing nothing wrong.

    • @caleb4750

      GearBoxVideo I figured it out man. I’m doing a rebuild on a 1977 dodge d100. 4 speed. I didn’t realize u had to do them on both sides. I was trying to pack them all on one side and that’s why they wouldn’t fit. The mopar cluster has this groove that seats the washers/spacers. I didn’t pay close enough attention to the video. Thank u man!

    • @GearBoxVideo

    Paul; I put my m20 together using a 1974 motors manual. On the counter shaft, it had the pipe spacer, then rollers, then 2 washers, then rollers and final washer. I just went back to my manual to verify and this is correct.
    So to sum up the rollers are riding right up against the pipe spacer.

      GearBoxVideo : Yes, I picked up on that fairly quickly. I’ve built a couple of bicycle frames. . . from seamless tubing. But I’ve run into steel frames where, running my finger inside the head tube, I’d have that “Oh, Oh” moment. And so e of these frames were NOT cheap. Sigh.
