FYI... The guitar solo in this song is played by Jerry Cantrell. You can also hear him in the outro. Steph is playing the heavy power chord riffs while Cantrell is playing the soaring solo notes over Steph's power chords. It's beautiful.
It's about drug addiction. Which is why Cantrell being in it is so poignant. RIP Layne Staley. Also, I love Gore. In my top 3 Deftones albums and they are my favorite band.
Here, Cantrell was songwriter, composer, and guitarist. In AIC mainly does that but also 2nd vocalist to lead depending on period/song. MVP of the band, even though Layne made them special.
Hey man, just started checking out your vids and I'm enjoying your reactions on the Deftones catalog. I've been a big fan of them for quite some time I'm surprised there's very little mention in the comments for Riviere. Its easily one of the most eerie and beautiful songs I've listened to and its probably my most favorite Deftones track to date. Absolutely recommend checking out!
Kind of a bittersweet song fitting for a bittersweet end for deftones reactions. If/when you ever revisit them I think youd enjoy Riverie and Acid Hologram. Other reactions would be: Smashing Pumpkins- Soma Jeff Buckley- Grace Soundgarden- The day I tried to Live Glassjaw- Everything you ever wanted to know about Silence
Thanks for sneaking these last two in! Are you going to wait on Diamond Eyes' approval or just post it to your Patreon today? That would bookend the catalog nicely. I think your journey was pretty complete. Hard to do everything. Bored is probably the most notable omission. Drive maybe, but that's a cover. Mascara would have been cool. Maybe a live stream before top 10?
i'll definitely be doing more deftones in the future it's just not gonna be daily like it has been, still deciding how to handle the tracks i haven't gotten to. i really prefer my reactions go on youtube for free for everyone so i'm gonna wait out the appeal but should find out today or tomorrow
It sounds extremely modern. Ahead of its time, in classic Deftones' style. But both bands did technically form in the 80's. Still going strong after all this time.
@@bernman23 Initially the band did kind of conceive of this as an 80's rock type ballad as they were initally going to ask guiatist Steve Stevens (Top Gun theme, Billy Idol's band, Michael Jackson's "Bad", etc.) to contribute the guitar solo but when the idea of working with Jerry Cantrell was thrown out there, they sent him the track to see if he wanted to and apparently he loved the song so much, he did his guitar parts right away and sent it back to them. It became something a bit different but those 80's rock roots are still there.
His pitch does get pretty high on the Digital Bath chorus also, if you’re inclined to do another Deftones. I also found he struggles a bit to reach such highs during live performances (I’ve seen them a few times), which is understandable when you consider all the vocal fries he does on other songs... Enjoyed the review, thanks!
Awesome final by this Deftones journey! Gore is the only Deftones album I don't like, but still love Hearts/Wires and Phantom Bride. Any chances for Katatonia soon? My Twin, Dissolving Bonds, Leaders, In The White, Journey Through Pressure, The Longest Year, Decima...
Oh, yes. This is the one I've been waiting for. Jerry brought a nice grunge touch to otherwise perfect song. I do hope that the road leeds you to Alice in Chains also someday. Cheers.
For years I couldn't bring myself to listen to this song because it made me think of my brother and how he wasted his life addicted to drugs and all the hopelessness and depression he experienced.
Bud you should go for a grunge dive a lot of amazing bands sound garden alive in chains nirvana pear jam 90s was definitely an amazing time for music a lot of good love unplugged for them also bud
I can see this song as well as Heart/Wires being about a breaking relationship. A wife that is empty and emotionless like a Phantom, and Hearts/Wires being an abuser telling their SO to run, "save yourself then come for me"
Hi, I love your videos.I will like you to react to Sopor Aeternus - Children of the Corn. She isn't that known, but she's a goth icon that has a career of 30 years and her lyrics are very powerful!
I'm always at odds with Gore, as an album. It has some really bright spots, Phantom Bride being the brightest in my opinion. I feel like the concept of it, and certain parts of other songs, are fantastic. But where it falls short i think is in the production and mastering, the lack of real Stephen Carpenter (the guitarist) because apparently there was some kind of personal thing he was going through during recording, and also that the drums just don't stand out in many of the songs. Abe Cunningham is such a fantastic drummer, and a lot of their sound is crafted around his instruments have a punch and a pop to it.
Glad you dug the song, but very sad to see the Deftones reactions come to an end (for now). This has been a daily habit every day for the last few months checking to see what track you were going to discover each day, and was a nice little piece of normality to get through the last few weeks especially. Personally i'd like to see you continue the individual song reactions on TH-cam like you have been doing as opposed to just tackling them in a livestream, there's too much going on in a livestream to give a new song your full attention like you do with these (although you could probably do one for the s/t, SNW and Diamond Eyes if you wanted to as you were almost done with the tracks). There's still a lot of Adrenaline, Around The Fur, and Gore to do as well as a couple of key tracks on the rest of the catalog, not to mention all the great Non-Album Tracks you never got to at all. Take a break if want to but i think the catalog is worth returning to in this format. Whatever you decide to do though, i'll be watching and hope to see some of the bands i recommended appear on the channel in the future.
The best track off Gore. Holds a lot of value for me. Please consider reacting/listening to these artists: MUSE Steven Wilson Porcupine Tree MEW Thrice
Hearing them with a guitar solo makes me wish their guitarist Stephen Carpenter was more adventurous in his playing and not so hard-headed. Deftones desperately has needed to be more adventurous than they have been the past few albums, but they just seem so content resting on their laurels.
It's just part of their sound really. Having guitar solos doesn't make them any more inventive than the other 5,000 rock bands who have them. Ultimately they prioritize songwriting which I prefer
One of the most disturbing songs I've ever heard. While I can see the appeal of seeing people react to it, for his sanity I dont think I'd ever recommend it 😳
FYI... The guitar solo in this song is played by Jerry Cantrell. You can also hear him in the outro. Steph is playing the heavy power chord riffs while Cantrell is playing the soaring solo notes over Steph's power chords. It's beautiful.
Deftones - Bored, Headup, Poltergeist, No Ordinary Love
Awesome suggestion with the B-Sisdes track..🤙Covers is way dope 2.. I keep bringing 'em up and I gits no love lol..
It's about drug addiction. Which is why Cantrell being in it is so poignant. RIP Layne Staley.
Also, I love Gore. In my top 3 Deftones albums and they are my favorite band.
Facts,overhated album

See deftones is all about them “vibes” they make you feel
Phantom bride is a Deftones beer named after this song.
Phenomenal beer btw. Couldn’t stop buying it till it they stopped shipping to Texas.
From Gore there's Acid Hologram, Doomed User and (L)MIRL which are very awesome highlights of the album

Deftones doing their version of an 80's hair metal tune
It sounds extremely modern. Ahead of its time, in classic Deftones' style. But both bands did technically form in the 80's. Still going strong after all this time.

@Rick O'Shea Ohhhh yeah...Def Leppard for sure...that was the first to come to mind.

Sopor Aeternus - Beautiful Thorn
Maybe do rubicon from this album. It’s the album closer. My favorite track on Gore!
Oh, yes. This is the one I've been waiting for. Jerry brought a nice grunge touch to otherwise perfect song. I do hope that the road leeds you to Alice in Chains also someday. Cheers.
I agree!! AIC is gold.

no you gotta keep going.. I love Gore personally ..
For years I couldn't bring myself to listen to this song because it made me think of my brother and how he wasted his life addicted to drugs and all the hopelessness and depression he experienced.

Some Sopor Aeternus would be great!
