      That’s because Arthur had a son who died in a similar situation, a debt collector came by and killed both the mother and son over a debt of $10.

  • @OrginalDon
    @OrginalDon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +450

    It´s actually beautiful storytelling between the missions of Strauss. First Arthur barely cares if he kills to reclaim the debt but after he gets sick he starts seeing things in a different perspective. It´s not until after Arthur (almost literally) encounters himself when he has to claim Arthur Londonderry's debt. He has died & so will Arthur. There is some beautiful parallel in Londonderry's tragic story of having died because he tried to pay someone else's bills. This is the turning point of Arthur because - he too - will die because of paying someone else's bills.

      I wouldn't go as far as to say he deserves what's happening to him. Yes, he was an outlaw part of this gang doing all these robberies and killing rival gangs, but there was a chance that he could redeem himself, even if he wasn't diagnosed. He did however deserve to hear those words from that woman. This is unlike Walter White who ends up pretty much beyond redemption after all the horrible things he has done.

    I like to see Strauss as a very grey character who is definitely a filthy bastard like pretty Much the rest of the gang but has definitely respect and care for the people he lives with so seeing him getting dropped out so roughly by arthur was kind of heartbreaking. • @stoifan91
      @stoifan91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I mean Arthur is an outlaw, killer, robber etc. A real criminal. You could argue that he's worse than Strauss for sure. And i would agree. But, they were all part of the same family. They were friends. Arthur choose to collect Strauss' debts in the beginning because it was for their family's sake. But being faced with your own mortality can definitely change a man. And i personally think that Arthur knowing that he's going to die, just had enough of this "family". Dutch going crazy, his brothers going around threatening the other members. Fucking Javier loosing it as well. we know 100% that Arthur knew that this would end up in a shootout. And i'd like to think that no matter how scummy Strauss really is, he was still family. And this was the only way to get him out. Because if you think about it. Arthur made sure most of the others got out just fine as well. Except Susan who i hated quite alot. But she ended up siding with and dying for Arthur. And making me change my opinion of her. Heck, in my second playthrough i got some camp dialogues with her actually always being nice to Arthur. Rockstar really outdid themselves with personalities in this one.

      @@stoifan91 unfortunately Strauss was interrogated and killed by the Pinkerton after he left as well. Makes the whole thing even more sad when you find out Strauss apparently gave up no information on the gang. He really did view them as family and in all honesty is what Strauss was doing much worse than what the other gang members did? I find it hard to say so. If anything it perfectly lined up with the way they all operated. He may have been a coward, but what other way could he have really helped the gang? Definitely not intimidating or helping in a heist lol

    • @stoifan91
      @stoifan91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@dman5527x Exactly! I see people shit on Strauss all the time just because Arthur got sick through his quests. But they all ignore the fact that Arthur chose to beat that same innocent man. I really do believe Arthur did what he thought was best for Strauss. Sure, his newfound respect and guilt for other people and the gangs actions against them got him angry. But that doesn't disprove that he was trying to save him as well before shit hit the fan.

    • @aslightlystablefootsoldier9838
      @aslightlystablefootsoldier9838 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      At the end of the day, Strauss had to gain money for the gang to survive. He had to cross the boundaries and extort any sources in any way to keep the income enough to supply the gang. However yeah his morals are mostly gone and near the end game it’s clear the crew isn’t in need of running debts anymore which shows how totally dark Strauss is.

    • @Longknife
      @Longknife ปีที่แล้ว

      I liken Strauss to a lot of top level CEOs and politicians who have done their fair share to hurt people: the sad truth is they probably genuinely do not comprehend the hurt they've caused, precisely *because* they're a safe distance from the practical effects of their work. They just sit far away, calling the shots, looking at numbers in a ledger, not realizing the stories *behind* those numbers.
      It's an irony and a conundrum where such individuals are simultaneously capable of incredible evils precisely because of that disconnect, but if confronted with that fact and forced to face the truth, they might not be horrible people at all and might prove extremely remorseful in the face of it all.
      Strauss simply seems confused and saddened, not even properly understanding why he deserves this, and hurt that someone feels that way. Arthur's right to act the way he did, but there's still a tragedy that Strauss did not learn the lessons Arthur did.
      Perhaps the better solution would've been to bring Strauss to face some of those targets, let him see the problem for himself, and that'll test what kind of a man he is.

      The problem is that the moneylending business was not something the gang was supposed to be doing in the first place. In the first part of the game, Arthur voiced his disdain toward the type of work when Dutch asked him to help Strauss collect debt. This is because Arthur knew that they’ll be robbing the desperate whereas the gang was suppose to rob only the rich and powerful. In both situations, he saw his past. Arthur brought up his son and his son’s mother in a conversation with Rains Falls and Arthur mentioned that both of them died as a result of a home robbery. When collecting the debt from J. John Weathers, he saw that both Weathers and his pregnant wife would be in trouble if he didn’t help them. As for the other Arthur, I can only assume that our Arthur saw his son and the mother of his son, seeing that other Arthur died

    Even tho Strauss is kind of a snake I’ve always liked him and took Arthur kicking him out of camp as half bc of the debts and half bc of the gang falling apart (wanting him to get to safety)
    But considering all the cut content I wonder if any members of the gang originally had different deaths? Someone totally innocent like Mary Beth or someone not so innocent but still undeserving like Strauss, I would’ve liked to see the gang lose a member to one of these more violent gangs (night folk, Murfrees) like when the skinners took uncle except someone actually dies. I feel like it could have been an emotional scene. And using the night folk would give them a mission in the game. I know it has nothing to do with the video but I think Strauss would have been a perfect contender for this role

    At least, the most honorable thing that Strauss did after he was kicked out by Arthur was keeping his mouth shut when Ross and his men found him and had him beat up to death in the question room a few years later.
    I truly think he was reflected by Arthur's words about how sick his debt payments were to those decent folks.
    And to make it up for his wrong doings,
    He literally didn't tell Ross the whereabouts of the remaining survivors of the group to help prolong their respective living out of the outlaw lifestyle.
    John actually complimented about Strauss' surprising, honorable action for them after he heard Strauss' fate from Charles during the Epilogue.

    Strauss should’ve been kicked out a long time ago; I know the gang as a whole were raising hell across 5 states but there’s a difference between robbing banks and mobsters and other gangs and loansharking the poor and disadvantaged. Just look at the type of people Strauss lent money to; poor and sick farmers, single mothers, poor families, a man who left the army due to his conscientious objections and to take care of his Native American wife and child. You notice you don’t see any businessman or rich railway magnates he targeted. Just people who were born into poverty and tried their best to keep their heads above water, which is what led them to Strauss in the first place. You can’t justify the evil shit Strauss did which is why Arthur kicked his ass out of camp near the end, when he was searching for redemption. Also Strauss got off lucky; there was a special way people used to handle his types; meaning loansharks and lenders who preyed on poor and working class but I won’t say what that way entailed.

      Yes, Strauss was evil. The whole gang were evil. They killed people all the time that hadn't earned it, or conned people out of their life savings, leading many to kill themselves in despair. Truth is, we are ALL evil and have earned death as "the wages of sin is death". We don't think we are that bad because we compare ourselves to other evil humans and say, "At least I'm not as bad as that guy over there" when we should compare ourselves to the true standard put forth by God. When we do, and realize we have never kept God 's standards, but have earned death, it is meant to be a "schoolmaster" to bring us to Christ in faith and repentance so that His righteousness can be imputed to us and our sin can be put on Him. That is the only way to avoid the death we have earned.

    I honestly getting mighty tired of people piling on Strauss.
    Unless I missed some key detail, the player is never told any of the actual details of the contracts.
    Yes Strauss lends money to sick and destitute, but who else would he lend money to, Bronte ? The Mayor of Saint Denis ?
    Rich people did not need loans and if they did they took them from banks not outlaw gangs, meanwhile these poor and sick people probably had no other choice than Strauss.
    The game devs try to make you feel all bad and sorry for them during the quests, but they do piss poor job at it.
    ''The poor need loans and they are sick, please feel bad : _( ''
    And its even more ridiculous when there are a lot of actual emotional moments in the game which is 100% proof that Rockstar just made the debt collection missions shit on purpose, or they were added in/changed at last minute.
    But I'm willing to eat my own words here, if there was some document showing exactly how unreasonable Strauss's loan agreements were that I missed, then we can talk about necking the man.
    But if no details of these contracts exist, its just business and nothing else, if they didn't pay up on time its on them, I doubt Strauss organized the downfall of all these people just so they have to lend money from him.

    • @Tomimi570
      @Tomimi570 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They all thought it was a long-term situation that's why they caved in and took the loan. They never expected a tough cowboy to knock on their doors, beat them up and ask for the money back so soon.
      Imagine taking a car-loan from a bank and you have 5 years to pay for it and suddenly the bank decided you need to pay in full after 2 years or they'll shoot your kneecaps. That's the situation here.

    • @Flustershy
      @Flustershy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tomimi570 Nice story...
      How about you back it up with facts from the game.
      Like I said previously, I personally did not find a single piece of evidence that shows.
      A. That Strauss shortened the deadline on the debts
      B. That Strauss had any hand in the downfall of the people in debt.
      C. That Strauss never promised that the collection will be non violent.
      So yeah, like I said, if I'm wrong, I'm willing to edit my comment and support the negative view on Strauss. But if no such document exist, I have absolutely no issues with Strauss.
