I think for how half-minded it was for Emil to make the connection between Nate and the Fallout 1 intro soldier, its even more disappointing to see how far people are just backpedaling on it.
The idea that this idyllic American citizen who secured his family's safety in a vault did so through brutal war crimes genuinely fits the themes and world of Fallout, especially with the fascist reality of immediate pre-war America in the Fallout timeline. And for gods sake it adds the tiniest shred of depth and complexity to mr "Yes Yes Sarcastic Yes No"
Fallout 4 is already lacking in almost any true moral depth, least they could do is add the dark tinge of possibility that youre playing the type of monster who was already completely mentally prepared for this sort of horror in the worst way possible.

The 108th Infantry Regiment is a real organization, a New York National Guard unit originally formed to fight the Spanish-American War and currently part of the 27th Infantry Brigade, which is itself part of the 42nd Infantry Division. The "108th Infantry Battalion", however, is not; the US Army has never used independent battalions. Battalions are always the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, et cetera, of a larger unit such as a regiment. There has never been a US regiment which had a "108th" battalion.
Canada, however, DID field a "108th Infantry Battalion" during World War One, formed from recruits from Selkirk and Manitoba. Given that the US had annexed Canada sometime during the Sino-American War, perhaps THIS is the origin of Elliot's unit - a Canadian force which had been integrated into the US military and which would therefore identify itself as such.

Honestly I really think that Nate is the soldier from the Anchorage simulation in fallout 3. I think he’s the one that blew up all those Chinese outposts in Anchorage. That would explain his ceremony at the veterans hall in Concord. That would be a really cool connection to the third game. Plus that would mean he has experience fighting enemies that use cloaking technology(stealth boys). He took down those stealth chinese soldiers and that means he’s fully prepared to take down an Institute courser.

I get Bethesda likes these grand, epic tales but it really killed the role playing experience by filling in so much of Nate/Nora's backgrounds. Could have worked if you could choose Nate's particular military training (demolitions, sniper, special ops, power armor division, etc) to determine his skillset but where's that leave Nora?
Why would someone with a law degree know how to spool up a minigun, nevermind fire one? "Oh, Nate showed me." Really? He'd go into explicit detail on how to operate military hardware on one of your romantic trysts?
It just doesn't make sense to define so much of your RPG character's history when it doesn't determine any SPECIAL or skills and impacts the story so little.

Idk, my ex told me she loved when I'd go on rants about guns and how they operate. I loved when she went on rants about bands she listened to and the musicians lives, if you really love someone then you'll enjoy when they're passionate about something and want want tell you about it

Hey, I have an interesting one. The Chem boxes are the same size and shape as the first aid kits. I always figured someone was painting them post war but the fact that they had no variation confused me. Until I found the stash of first aid kits being painted yellow in the boston mayoral shelter in the area before the security gate (I think). I assume it must have been part of Red Tourrette's side hustles, but I have no evidence to support that. I'm not sure if you covered it on this channel already, and maybe it was obvious to other players but I totally missed it until recently.

Having a prescripted backstory doesn't work for characters with settable stats at the beginning of the game. If Nora were a competent lawyer, how can I set her intelligence, charisma, and luck stats to 1 when creating her character?
New Vegas got around this by creating a blank slate in the courier, but even that doesn't work in all cases. A successful courier would probably have high endurance and some specialized skills for making long treks across the desert, but you could still turn them into a high intelligence science geek with no physical attributes to speak of.
Something interesting that Bethesda could have done was to create specialized backstories for every combination of SPECIAL stats. If they could record specific dialogue for Codsworth to a couple hundred different names, they could put in a couple dozen different occupations as a line of dialogue as well.
Split your points evenly across all of the physical stats and you're a soldier, but drop a couple of those points into charisma and you become a police officer. Max out your charisma and you become a lounge singer, but put a couple of those points into perception and you become a car salesman. Go further and split points evenly between intelligence and charisma and you become a lawyer. It would have been fun to see what characters you could come up with. If nothing else, the novelty of it would have lasted about as long as it did to hear Codsworth say your name.

    • @Evan_Horvath
      @Evan_Horvath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Fallout 3 probably did it best, since you start the game when you're born. The only backstory is that you've lived your life so far in Vault 101.
You could argue that getting shot in the head tweaked some of your stats, so you can give more leeway to the plausibility of certain stats not being commensurate with being a courier.

It has been customary in times of war to expand a battalion to regiment size and keeping the lineage designation (108th in this case) or to reduce the unit in peace time and retain said designation when downgrading from regimental to battalion size. It makes sense that the 108th Infantry Battalion would be expanded as the Resource Wars demanded more manpower. In such case, the 108th battalion would become the 1st Battalion of the 108th Infantry Regiment (to retain the lineage) while adding more battalions made up of new recruits.

The backstory doesn't bother me a whole lot, and though I do like leaving it open, this could be better than that if it was taken seriously and done meticulously to cover a wide range of options.
On Nora though, that doesn't really bother me either because I thought the whole concept of perks and leveling throughout the Fallout series was the idea of you "getting better" despite lacking prior experience and skillset. The Wasteland was training you so-to-speak. Which is why two Vault Dwellers and a Caveman dude were able to outgun entire organizations by certain points. They don't leave much open-ended either, and nobody complains about them because I feel like people target FO4 for everything lol There's only just a little left imagination room here than every other entry in the franchise, except for FO:NV and the Legend it is.

One thing I read is that in Fallout 4, you get more health back from blood packets than in other games, because here Nate has the experience to do a blood transfusion properly, and perhaps so does Nora, while both Lone Wanderer and Courier just straight up drinks it and gets less benefits, unless certain effects are applied. You can even hear the difference in both games, where in Fo3 you hear a gulping sound while in 4 it's more a rustling plastic

If he is a war criminal, then joining the Minutemen is just the better for him imo, since he can like redeem himself through that. I'm not saying he is, but think about this, he is also human with flaws, I know being a war criminal is not something can be forgiven but the guy could also have something that troubled him as a person. But when he met Nora, he developed, he wanted to start again then the bombs dropped. He is angry he either joins the Minutemen to remember how his wife gave him a second chance or the Raiders where he can commit as much astrocities as he did before.
As for Nora, I want to think that she knew that Nate was a war criminal. But he gave him a second chance since she fell in love with the guy.

I don't know if it's just me, but I like to think that the perks having to do with doing more gun damage is a lot like learning how to use the guns better, and in that regard, I actually withhold from leveling those perks until I have with me companions that best fit the perks.
    So here's what I mean:
    1. Starting off, I actually level up my pistol damage because I like to think that Nate, being a US Vet, taught Nora to shoot and therefore she knows how to handle a pistol at least
    2. For rifles, I like to roll with McCready, since he's known to be a rifleman merc. With him also, I level up my sniper & sniping related perks as well
    3. For automatics & heavy guns, I level up with Danse because he's a true soldier
    4. With lasers, I roll with X6
So yeah, that's how I do it tbh

If you pull it off just right, you can cram in a set list of faction quests that result in only the destruction of the Institute, thus creating a pseudo-alliance between the Railroad, BoS, and Minutemen, making it seem as though they were also part of the over-arching objective, since you'll need to pick one anyway.
