4 years of riding and its finally starting click for me. Last weekend I finally hit my tracks big tables and a step up thinking exactly these suggestions. Higher gear, stand tall head forward. It helps to visualize your front wheel targeting the landing too! And more speed than you think! Thanks AJ!
Well done my man. Isn't it the best feeling on the day when it all clicks and from then on in your riding career you have moved forward a level. Keep it up bro be safe and have fun. Nothing in the world comes close to clearing that jump for the first time and getting that rush, 25ft or 90ft makes no difference.
Thank you. Even though I know all this and used to put it into practice regularly, getting back into MX this really helped going through the steps. Really appreciate the concise format, no waffle, straight to it, something to take away from every word.
It’s great how you break this down. Makes total sense. It’s all physics. I had to do that when I was a pole vaulter. One variable effects another and it’s so important to know how. Thanks so much for your videos. They are really interesting and easy to understand the techniques. 👍
good video. My suspension on my 450 was so stiff at the stock settings it was miserable. Took me a few rides to figure it out. It was basically hydrolocking. Getting suspension setup close ish is very important for jumping.
Now that I’m older I stopped jumping everything I used to, incredibly frustrating when I’m battling a guy and he sends it and I roll it losing so much time. With more age has come fear and lack of confidence for some reason when my riding has done nothing but improve.
yep that's me. After 35 years and now at age 57, I have bought a YZ250 2T and the jumps just scare me. My nickname used to be Flying Dutchman but now there is no resemblance of that. LOL
I will see you in Longwood fl. I need help. I’m terrible. I can clear some jumps but some I’m terrified of. I look forward to learning more. Not looking to go pro just want to be decent and have fun on my off days.
I went to the track for the first time yesterday I have a 2024 KX 250 F I was at Daniels Ridge in Taylorsville North Carolina. I’ve watched over 100 videos on how to jump a dirtbike did everything that the videos told me to and kept the throttle steady, I got one or two decent jumps where I was straight and actually got a little distance but most of the other times I kept going over my handlebars almost
I think a lot of people new to jumping are unsure of what to do on the take off (and how fast to go) are you pulling up, are you readjusting yourself, are you staying completely still, are you readjusting your grip? There's so many things that can go wrong on the take off with someone who doesn't understand the sensation of jumping the first time, and that's the scariest part. Also - people new to jumping have NO clue how fast to go, how do they learn that, what's the best type of jump to start on, etc?
@@AjCatanzaro What would you say would be the best jump at Tomahawk would be to learn jumps? I've been getting close to clearing the step up, but I'm afraid of running off the track because there's a turn right after? The jumps in the back section seem better but I don't really know
Never thought of dropping my heels on the face, i always did it with landing but i think i was always way too tight on the faces. I’ll definitely try it out slowly this weekend and build from there. This might be my key to jump instead of keeping the bike low lol! Without noticing I didn’t drop my heels and ofcourse that’s when you absorb the bike🤣 Thanks Aj!🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks AJ for another great video! I'm fine with jumps, just watched quite a few of your videos and this one popped up.. finally subscribed :D I do want to ask... As it's my only limiting factor to do bigger jumps, my suspension... I weigh 110kg and bike is stock klx450r so soft enduro suspension for 80kg rider. How quick should i change my suspension? I really do like jumping and want to do bigger but then again, I am hitting the biggest jumps around my area. I also am not the wealthiest guy so spending a whole bunch of money is a really big deal for me... Thanks AJ! Have a good one :)
Thanks Albert! Coming back to the sport after a 20 years lay off is quite challenging, but also the most fun I've had over the last, well 20 years. Basic jumping technique is alright, but one thing I've had an "issue" with is approaching a jump with excess speed. What is my go to here? Obviously Bubba-Scrubbing it solves all problems, but right now I kind of get on the brakes and than back on the gas up the face and that feels super weird. If you've committed and got enough speed ahead could you possibly get off the throttle at or up the face and let the bike(and rider) "collapse" that way? I'm basically asking for the jumping lesson 1.2 Good luck this weekend! Thanks
@@bunnyman6321 working on it slowly. Saw a video with Townley and Gypsy Tales that was really informative. BT able to explain himself in a good way. Cheers
More advice is that it is better to over jump than to over jump because you would rather land on flat ground than the the face of the second jump and this is speaking from experience
I’ve been riding motorbikes for a few weeks and I’m trying jumps already but someone else in the comments said it took 4 years so I think I’m getting to confident but idk
That was a very specific situation I wouldn't worry about! Supercross suspension is incredibly stiff and that was a very intense g-out between sx obstacles. Not a situation that most riders would ever come across!
Hopefully this video helps with all of your jumping! You can train with me online at club.themotoacademy.com ✊🏼

Beautifully concise and precise, AJ!

Don’t tap the break give throttle when coming out of the jump
Don’t throttle freeze either will throw you foward
This is such a helpful video. I collapse my body when I land and I also bring my head away from the bars. Thank you!
I really love these man

Always have to start on the most safe jumps possible with no gap in between and a a long runoff. Build confidence with something overly safe

Land on the throttle? As in keep the throttle pulled a bit?
I feel like you need to push back on the foot pegs as the rear rebounds off the jump to keep your body forward.

Every jump is different! There are jumps where coming up short is definitely the safer option.
Thanks Aj you are the best teacher, can we have a "How to wheliee a 125 2 stroke" I can do it on 450 but not on the lil 125
