I think Ariana's freaky as fuck slug baby is ...kinda cute, it reminds me of a cat.
I wish there was an option to adopt and raise it, so it grows up to be a freaky slug baby man/thing that learns to speak and forms its own identity. Not a man, not a monster, but something else.

Not trying to be confrontational here or say that you're wrong, but I always understood the moral of bloodborne to be more long lines of unbridled ambition and the dangers of science and transcendence when combined with religious level fanaticism, and that the true victims were everyday people who trusted "benevolence" without question.
Bergenworth researched, but with caution. And made sure to show respect (fear) towards the blood. The healing church, however, dove head first into the research of transcendence using the blood to become "Gods." They did not fear the old blood, and because of this lack of respect and their ambition, they brought death Doom and destruction on countless innocent lives.
No I'm not saying that you're wrong or that there are not multiple interpretations to bloodborne's meanings and the morals behind the story, but I'm curious and would like to hear why you choose to focus on this interpretation, specifically about the story being representative of the struggle of women and violence toward women and pregnancy and childbirth.
Again, I am not trying to be confrontational, I just really like bloodborne and I'm interested in all the different interpretations that people have. Art is subjective unless otherwise stated by the artist, and I would like to hear the reasoning for everybody's interpretation. Especially because I love this story so much.

Nothing in a video game has filled me with enough fury to kill an eldritch god than Arianna's story. She was forced to bear a child unwillingly because some space monstrosity posing itself as a god willed it, and the child itself a victim - not knowing it was not wanted, doomed to never know a mother's loving touch.

Not many people seem to realise just how much disgustingly harder all the women have it compared to most of the men who just kinda go nuts. Women don't just lose their minds and turn into creatures in this game, they get used and abused, dissected, infected, ground into paste, killed off and replaced (woooaah rhymes~). I just recently read a few of the Bloodborne comics too. Even in those there's a story of a woman being turned into a monster as a direct representation of the slowly revealed spiralling passion and corruption of one secretly selfish medicine man.

Arianna and her child can also be seen as a mirror of Kos and the Orphan. Both the orphan and the child go unloved by their mothers, but for different reasons. The orphan loses his mother due to tragedy and you put him down because what else can you do. There’s no way to fix what went wrong. And Arianna’s child loses his mother due to her not wanting it. She rejects it utterly and thus you put it down because what else can you do. You can’t force her to love it and there’s no one to take care of it. It’s a metaphor for the sad reality of what should be a universally good thing. Childbirth.

    • @ameliawilliams4632
      @ameliawilliams4632 ปีที่แล้ว +221

@@jmassagetherapist6773 The doll is inanimate unless you have insight. Your character ignores her autonomy and personhood unless they have a certain kind of wisdom. You can use her (level up) without ever listening to her speak if you are unwise. In this sense her status as an imitation is only true without the capacity to understand her.
She has her own feelings even if she ponders if they are artificial. If you return something sentimental to her she sheds a tear, something she could not do before. She clearly has feelings and desires of her own, divorced from what Gherman made her to have.
Even funnier about Gherman is how he came to not care for the doll for just the reason you described. He wanted her to have Maria's personality and basically discarded her when he realized she was, as you said docile and polite as opposed to Maria. She was made to be a perfect replica physically but her own personality was formed in contrast.
It is shown that she is not simply to be of service to you. In fact I've always had the theory she intended for the hunter to become a great one because she desired a child of her own. She is the contrast of all the unwilling but able mothers in the game. She as a doll is incapable of giving birth by conventional means.
I don't think you should mistake the doll's caring and kindness with a lack of strength. Without her assistance the hunter would have failed, and if they never gained the wisdom to realize this they would've never known the depth of that.

It's a recurring thing I somehow never noticed while playing the game years ago, I didn't really pay attention to the lore much, and just thought this kinda of stuff was placed in for shock and terror and the bloody gothic atmosphere. It has a lot of powerful messages games like this usually don't ever touch.

But the discovery of what had happened to Arianna and the sight of her "child" finally snapped her mind, and set her on a path to ensure that humans NEVER tampered with the Great Ones or vice versa, no matter how much of her own humanity she had to give up to prevent that from happening.

We don't actually know if fake Iosefka is pregnant, and it doesn't match up with how she describes the feeling compared to Arianna. It's much more likely that she is trying to ascend like Rom and we do at the end, with her brain becoming lined with eyes, hence the writhing inside her head. The cord we obtain from her, notably, only mentions itself as the cord "Provost Willem sought," not her being pregnant with a child or the Great One that impregnated her like the others do. Considering that there is a secret entrance to Byrgenwerth right inside Iosefka's clinic and there is already a Choir scholar at Byrgenwerth when we get there, it stands to reason that she obtained the cord from there. There is then only one Great One which Byrgenwerth made direct contact with as an infant, as far as we know, which was the Orphan. Therefore Iosefka's cord is Rom's cord is Willem's cord is the Orphan's cord.

Assuming that whatever Great One chose to “bless” her doesn’t decide to keep her alive or put her mind in some sort of “heaven” as thanks for giving birth to its child, even if it dies soon after.
To summarize, the best outcome of this situation is that in this world, one where we get to visit an afterlife specifically made for the hunters, there is no afterlife for regular people and that the Great One that “kindly” “blessed” her so that she could experience the “joy” of bringing a god into existence doesn’t decide to do something to thank her, like making her unable to die, or putting her mind into a paradise where she is constantly exulted for giving birth to a God, even if it died.

Arianna's fate is why the Childhood's Beginning ending never felt like a "good" ending to me by any stretch. Yes, you've achieved what the Healing Church could not and transcended humanity, but at what cost? You've just killed an innocent woman who's already been horribly violated because she has something *else* you want. Same goes for if you get the third umbilical cord from Fake!Iosefka--she might have been a nasty piece of work, but she didn't deserve *that.* And after everything we've learned about the Church throughout the game, are we really sure that fulfilling their wishes is something we should want to do? Honestly, my hot take is that there aren't really any "good" endings in this game--they just exist on a sliding scale of unkindness.

all of this is from a desperate desire for lineage. ever singular thing you see is some twisted attempt to create more 'gerat ones' and grant some promise of lineage. a desperation that has only grown over countless eons. and its likely the only reason the great ones are even doing this stuff themselves is because of the churches and other organizations who are promsiing that lineage.
you achieve what the great ones always wanted, by creating a new, proper, pure newborn, and likely setting the eldritch gods at peace.

I wonder if the reason the game is made so difficult is also because of the subject matter. The topic of blood and birth and how deep the game takes these subjects is very heavy and can be unsettling for people to talk about. @@dead_pool2128 We must travel in different circles because I've seen it reiterated over and over again across multiple essays, stretching back to when the Old Hunters came out, that one of Bloodborne's central themes is how "People of science misunderstand and then cannot forcibly emulate the emotional bonds that form between a parent and their child, thus leading to their ruin." Motherhood and children are used as a means to an end in Bloodborne, and I honestly can't recall anyone ever shying away from that fact.

@@RuthenTheDarkMagus given how I've mostly seen people liking Gwyndolin but I've unfortunately seen a couple haters that were disgusted with them, I could see how FromSoftware likely has two very different fandom pools that don't mingle much (one pool that is aware of everything and likes it, and the other pool that would basically combust once they realized what Bloodborne is about.)

I was so sick I threw up every twenty minutes, I couldn't eat for weeks, at all, I could barely keep water down
    I lost two stone
I know now I should have sought medical help but at the time I was a child myself, I didn't know

And the old gods did, but in return put him and the living doll into a nightmare and make the living doll who looks like his crush "serving" hunters that arrive in the nightmare. This game is full of nightmare storys because... well it is a nightmare.

In my opinion, the worst thing about Arianna's fate is that you cant even be mad at the tiny abomination next to her.
If you could simply be angry at it and kill it, youd probably feel better. But, you cant. Its just a child, so clear in it's pose that its just as confused and scared as arianna is. Instead youre forced to hold that hate until you can take it out on the eldritch gods who cursed her

I’ve not played blood borne yet but something about these themes feels like a harrowing tale for our current political climate and I’m here for it. It portrays these themes in ways that perhaps a more male audience might understand. Such as unwanted children as a result of an unconsensual or consensual act. Or perhaps Not even knowing nor not being ready to become a mother. The horror that such a thought might strike a woman with is a very real one. And the expectation to love a child unconditionally isn’t true for everyone. To see a woman robbed unknowingly of what should be her choice, and violated in so many ways and used as a vessel for another being unknowingly, it’s terrifying.
Yes women should love their children, but they should also be able to choose when they are ready to love a child. Not everyone is ready for that type of commitment, and many still have partners who have desires that they feel obligated to sate.
It shouldn’t be forced upon anyone regardless of their actions or perceived status.
I really appreciate the perspective this game gets us to understand on a visceral level

The cut scene where ya are given the blood transfusion is ya being taken to the nightmare. Its your conciousness not your body thats in the nightmare like it real life. Your body is still hooked up to an iv filled with old blood. Like most nightmares and dreams ya don't know if it's real or not only vague details of what to do next ie find the old blood. So ya adventure forth and die or find a lantern. Entering the dream. The keeper of it explains your next step to hunt. So ya hunt to find the blood that will save your life. The church has it ya discover. It did but it lost it to the scholars then. Ya find the spider. She hasn't have it but maybe the queen does. She wants her child. Ya find her child and rescue her. Ya think ya find the blood but you're trapped still. End the nightmare they tell ya. So ya kill the crazed man. The nightmare ends. Ya return to the dream. Given 2 choices: fight or die. Ya die and awaken in the real world hopefully cured. Ya fight and the true dreamer makes ya the new keeper or if ya find the cords and consume them ya become the new dreamer and it starts again(youre in a coma basically for two endings of fighting). The night of the hunt is a night thst actually happened who knows how long ago but everyone in the nightmare is forced to relive it over and over again thus making it a nightmare. Just like in the old hunters nightmare as all the old dead hunters are forced to relive the worst time of their lives repeatedly until the curse dies with the orphan.
Think of the old hunters nightmare and the hunters dream as a dream within a dream. This can happen in actual dreams if you're aware enough your dream might switch to a nightmare or a different dream after awhile. Or watch inception since it explains it better but in a heist movie format.

Knowing FromSoftware's SoulsBorne games are inspired by "Berserk", I can instantly tell that this Arianna's and her child's fate is directly taken from Casca giving birth to the demon child.
For those unfamiliar with Beserk, the demon child (and later fan dubbed "the moon child") and it's fate is a central part of Beserk most important story moments.
