The orthopedist thinks my mom has this. I was soo depressed and scared about it. My mom did reinjure it by twisting so we are playing the waiting game to see what it really is But the way you explain it makes me feel much better. Her orthopedist doesn't take time to explain anything and has a "too bad" attitude spends 2 minutes in the room. So thank you for this explanation.

I have recently been told I have Charcot in my feet. My husband noticed a bruise on the bottom of my right foot. I am a nurses. aide and I am on my feet a lot I contributed the swelling and pain to my job.
I am diabetic so when I went to have my toe nails cut , the doctor noticed the shape of my foot. He did an xray and showed me the difference between a healthy foot and a person that has Charcot, I was devastated.
I was immediately placed in a boot and was told I needed diabetic shoes with inserts to protect my feet plus I have try to keep the diabetes under control.

If anyone is in NC with this problem, I suggest that you get in contact with Dr Timothy Vogler; Novant foot and ankle, in Winston Salem, NC. over 25 years experience. He treated me.

Neuropathic joints, often called Charcot joints, are caused by loss of sensation in the joint so that it is severely damaged and disrupted. The damage and disruption is often so gross that the diagnosis of a neuropathic joint is easily made, both on clinical examination and X-ray, because no one who had sensation would tolerate such destruction of the joint.

Thank you! This is awesome information! I just lost my right leg to this. My left is heading this way too. My podiatrist said nothing can be done but a second amputation. Ugh!

Hello, I was diagnosed with Charcot's Joints back in Jan of this year. I am receiving treatment and Just received the Crow boot after about 5 - 6 months in multiple casts, Now the technicians who fitted me for the crow boot told me not to spend more than 1 hour per day in the boot, Now I haven't seen my doctor since I have received the boot. I don't see how just 1 hour per day is going to help me. am I wrong or right?

Bushidobull I would assume you are supposed to not walk on it without a boot. Crutches or wheelchair.x

Can this process happen more than once on the same foot please?

Yes. I have Charcot foot myself. Have had surgery. Four years later I've had a small reoccurance. When I had the surgery my doctor fused the bones in my foot. They put me in a boot again, and couple weeks the warm feeling went away.

The best for my situation was to keep as much weight off my feet as possible...

The warmth and swelling last around 3 months. This is called the acute stage. Afterwards this stops but you still have this disease. Starting with boots, casts, and more than likely surgery. The foot will never be the same. Been there done that.
