    Two months ago I dropped a heavy steel plate on my big toe joint. X-ray revealed no breaks. But now I have a lot of pain and swelling around the joint. Just visited my GP today and he referred me to an Orthopedic Surgeon. He said that in all likelihood, the surgeon will fuse the joint together. From my perspective...not gonna happen. I'm hoping for a better outcome.

    It would be difficult for me to answer most of these questions without examining your foot myself. I can say that while orthotics can decrease the mechanical stress that leads to big toe joint arthritis and reduce its progression, in a high arched foot orthotics do not work the same as in normal or flat arched feet, and an orthotic is really a shock absorber in this case. I am not certain that progression of the arthritics will be reduced, but there will be greater comfort with the orthotics.

    Thanks for your reply. You are doing a great service, posting these videos! I guess I had better go get my toe pain diagnosed. My brother has gout in his toe and I don't know which I have.

    Great video!
    I am 60, very fit, very active, and a yoga practicioner. (One uses the feet a lot in yoga). I have "suddenly" meaning rapidly, developed, on the R. foot, a large protrusion on the top of the first metatartsal, and the second one a large spur). It has been x-rayed.
    Now, whom should I see? A podiatrist, an ortho surgeon, or a rheumatologist?

    Depends on the particular surgery (cleaning vs implant vs fusion) and the specific motions you want to perform.

    Very informative, I'm 37 years old and after "trying" cardio kickboxing to start getting in some type of shape the repetitive bouncing in place became too much for my foot joints to handle . After seeing a podiatrist I found out I have flat feet which caused both of my joints to become arthritic , I was given for orthotics to place in my shoes for walking and was told surgery was not the best option because I may out live what is done in the surgery. I was given cortisone shots in each of my joints and it hurts like the dickens , gave me temporary relief and days later my other chose became them because the cortisone left the area of injection and spread to the other toes causing them to become numb . I will certainly really examine options for getting this surgery I live in Maryland and must go to a different hospital or facility.

    I've had arthritis in my big toe joint since I was about 14. I am 27 now and am suffering tremendously. I can't play as much basketball as I used to. Sucks. Hoping to get arthrodesis surgery soon.

    Implants it last for 10 years then you have to surgery again. Fusion is for life. I just had big toe fusion 6 weeks ago I can walk around in the house but the doctor told me I have to wear medical boot 👢 so the born can heal properly and not bearing weight. It's meant I have use wheelchair or medical scooter.

    I'm 44 years old and have had lower back surgery to relieve nerve probs. My left big toe hurts when I try to wear heels that I have been limited to flat shoes.When I try to wear heels and my toe is in the arched position, I see stars!! ....and when I take the high heels off, and the big toe tries to go back into a 'non-arched/relaxed' position, I also experience great pain. I have another upcoming back surgery where my vertebrae will be fused. Does this back issue contribute to my big toe issue?

    • @cherylyoung7760
      @cherylyoung7760 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had lower back surgery once. Now disc above pinching nerve. My big tie throbs like a toothache. Went to foot Dr, he cut big toe nail back quiet a ways, relived pressure. My toes on the same foot will have spasms and look retarded in different positions like entangled or cramped positions. It's horrible. I put heat on my toes, feels much better. Not sure I want another back surgery yet

    After years of teaching Taekwondo, my big toe needed to be examined by a podiatrist. She recommended a custom insole & better sneakers. She said 1-10 my arthritis was about a 6. It did help somewhat but some days it feels like a 9-10 pain wise. She also said the surgery would not guarantee the arthritis would come back. I was going to go to an orthopedic surgeon instead of a podiatrist to get a second opinion. Need advice.

    Great info Doc, Thanks. I was wondering if one has a fusion of the big toe joint, can they walk normally, without limping and/or would they need a special orthotic, or can they just wear normal shoes?
    Thanks

    I can relate to the previous comment SEEING STARS when I have to pop my big toe back into place! Worse pain I ever felt beyond child birth and degenerate disk disease I also have involving disc L4 - L5 S1

  • @edizzle4shizz
    @edizzle4shizz 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Arthritis in both big toes, big toe usually slips partially out of place and has to be aligned back in place. Been popping my big toe all my life and had bunion surgeries on both feet. I wonder does either or contribute to the arthrits because I never had any trauma to my feet. Also have very long big toe. That may have something to do with it as well.

    hi great video, two years ago i sprained my ankle and also last year as well. after that i went for physio a few times, it helped and also had an mri scan and a steroid injection which also helped. more recently i noticed a tingling sensation around the ball of my foot i went to see somebody about this, they noticed i have limited movement in my big toe and said i may need an operation or an injection into the joint. i noticed my big toe is bent inwards a bit towards my other toes?

  • @MrHetherton
    @MrHetherton 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    i was also told maybe a joint fusion could be done. if the toe is bent inwards does that mean cartilage damage? sorry for all the writing there was things i forgot to add.

  • @heresjoje
    @heresjoje 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That was a really informative video.During a diabetic foot check my podiatrist said i had limited range of movement in the left big toe and said it could be a problem because of pressure.I asked him what causes this he said arthritis usually (he was quite vague) so I was thinking of asking my gp for an x-ray of both toes,do you think this is the way to go? Thanking you in advance.

    Thanks for a great video. I am 40, wondering if implant vs arthrodesis should be considered in my case. I had a very poorly done bunionectomy 5 years ago, and most recently, a Weil osteotomy 2nd toe to correct severe metatarsalgia. Only worsened the pain, threw my whole foot structure off. No orthotic is helping. The most severe pain is within my hallux joint, and also at proximal metatarsal, which is now too short/spurred at both ends. I have rigidus, constant hallux pain. Thoughts?

    In an X-ray - which shows signs of osteoarthritis of the big toe joint - could this be due to gout. Can the signs of osteoarthritis in an x-ray be confused with gouty arthritis? I was told that i have osteoarthritis - although I get gout attacks in the joints - so i was very surprised to be told that it was osteoarthritis.

    I'm supposed have my toe fused, I've already had surgery you clean out the arthritis but I have so much pain and I just seen my surgeon and he said the best option is to fuse the joint, but I do yoga, and very active so I would love to have the the implant done, since you are located in the states is there anyone in Ontario Canada that you would recommend

    Hello-
    Please try Magnesium oil and comfrey tincture
    My mom (65) was diagnosed with hallux rigidus. It was painful for her to walk long distances and she could not wear any shoes that would even put the slightest pressure on that big toe. Doctor said that it would cost $4000 for her to have an operation.
    I looked up this condition and found that it had to do with calcium deposits.
    Well after starting magnesium oil crystals (not epsom salts) every night, and applying comfrey tincture 2-3 times a day...even though the bump is still there, she no longer has pain, can hyperflex her big toe and is also able to where whatever shoes she wants.
    It took 3 weeks to notice any improvement and after one month she felt the full benefits.
    She did weekly soaks for a few months after that, and now, a year later, she doesn't even think about it.

    • @DawnaAustin
      @DawnaAustin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      would you kindly provide greater detail on how to go about trying this? ie. how do you use the crystals, and how much tincture (assuming I even know where to find it). Any help is appreciated thanks.

    • @jayybee30
      @jayybee30 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dawna Austin Hi Dawna, I did not expect a reply since I wrote that so long ago! My mom by the way still has no complaints and I don't even see her soak her feet anymore. But since it was so long ago, I will have to go back and try to remember what we did (brands etc.) . Will get back to you shortly.

    • @jayybee30
      @jayybee30 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dawna Austin You can get the stuff on Amazon. Herb Pharm Comfrey tincture. She would rub this in 3x a day. And the Mg. was by Health and Wisdom. First we bought the spray and diluted that 1:1 with distilled water, which she applied 2x a day. At night, I had her soak her feet in very warm, but not comfortable, water with 1/4 cup Health and Wisdom Magnesium flakes. I read somewhere that the body absorbs better when water is not too hot. If too hot, the body will detox out instead. She did this every night for several weeks faithfully. After about 6 weeks she would do twice a week and then down to once a week until she didn't hurt at all anymore. But she was still applying the comfrey and spray throughout the day for these 6 weeks. The bump was still there but it did not give her any pain. I wonder if she would have done it longer, that would go down too, mbut I think she is just happy enough not to deal with pain and doesn't care about the bump. When we ran out of the spray, we made some more out of the crystals. I can't remember exactly the ratios but you boil some distilled water, add it to a glass bowl and then add the Mg. stir until dissolved. I made the mistake of making a batch by adding directly to the stainless steel pot on the stove. What happened was the Mg. dissolved the hard water deposits on the pot and all that ended up in the finished solution.

    • @DawnaAustin
      @DawnaAustin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a little confused as to what spray you applied 2x a day. Are you saying you rubbed comfrey 3x a day, sprayed something else 2x a day and then soaked nightly in Magnesium?

    • @jayybee30
      @jayybee30 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dawna Austin Comfrey 3x a day, Mg. 2x a day and then soaked in Mg. Crystals nightly. For instance, whenever she sprayed the Mg., she would also rub the comfrey tincture in with or right after and do that extra Comfrey rub right after the nightly Mg soak.

Yesterday i went to a&e and they xrayed my foot and said i have artritus at the top of my toe and that i should be reffered back to my surgeon but he was not sure if they could do anything as i already have a plate in the bottom of my toe. I'm 18 and I have had constant pain at the joint in my toe since i stubbed it really bad. This pain and "stiffness" has lasted 3 months. I thought nothing of it, but now when i move my big toe up and down I can feel grinding like the bones are rubbing together. What options do I have? What other problem might this be besides arthritis? Help.

    Thank you for your reply! Just another small question - are gout tophi hard to the touch or soft? Can you move them around. I had massage on my big toe joints - which alleviated the pain i was getting in the arch of my foot - just before the big toe 'knuckle'... on the side the toe seems to have a 'bulge' (right greater than left - although arch pain was on left) - is that a tophus - it's quite hard - or would it more likely be just osteoarthritic changes to the joint. Gout sucks! I'm only 33!

    I'm 27 and walk to work everyday (about 45 minutes combined walking), and the last few months my right big toe has felt a little weird, kind of like it needs to be cracked but can't, and I never cracked my toes before and I'm afraid of breaking my toe. It doesn't really hurt or feel stiff, just feels like it needs to be cracked in certain positions. Does that sound like arthritis? Or do I just need someone with strong hands to crack my toe?

    right now i'm giving thought to using HGH to heal my left big toe as it doesn't bend properly and i think i have worn the cartilage away (honestly cannot remember when i did it but it was either in my teens or early 20's) and it hurts when i walk and run on it. I have researched the problem and i may have arthritus and i found out an operation can be performed where they insert a metal implant in to the bone and you can move it again. can anybody help me ???? many thanx if so :)

    I'm 36 and a runner. I recently found out I have earl stage of arthritis of the left big toe from my podiatrist. He suggested orthotics for this and for my high arches. I run around 50-60 miles a week during peek training. Should I able able to continue training the same. Will The training contribute to the progression of the arthritis. Will the orthotics help slow the progression or will it be the same without the orthotics.
