I think the plaintiff was very reasonable here in only asking for part of what she originally paid. It is refreshing to see a JJ case where the plaintiff genuinely isn't greedy and makes concessions straight away.
You know if it was another ‘usual’ plaintiff, they would’ve asked for the entire payment back plus pain and suffering LOL
So basically she tried to go the cheap way and do everything herself and it was too much for her to handle.... That's how the food got burned.

She left food cooking unattended to leave the building, and it burnt? That's scary -- a neighbour in an apartment next to me did that about 18 years ago, and caused quite a bit of damage, it's terrifying to think people would leave food cooking, and just take off, they can kill someone.

Agreed, however the caterer's excuses were in my opinion pathetic.

In 1960, in our neighborhood, girls had their Sweet 16 party with their friends in dad’s garage. They played records on a portable record player and danced. The mom provided food and soft drinks for the party. It was a lot like Leave It To Beaver.

Just as a matter of original cost perspective, $3k for 50 people let alone the original estimate of 100 people is beyond a steal. Event space? Food? DJ? Staff needed to run the event? Geez, where can I find someone for this price.
The pricing for what was offer it’s extremely cheap. Not to be rude but you get what you pay for. Don’t expect an over the top party if you aren’t willing to spend the money

Then I’d say $200 for decorations because I’m sure she already has some.
Bus let’s say $400
Pay for 3 workers 10 hours (decorations,etc) $600
So that’s about 2200 so she pockets about 700 unless I’m missing something? I bet she didn’t pay those helpers $200 a day either and I’m sure since she bought the food and made it she didn’t spend 1k more like $600-700
2900 is a lot for a small party. Besides, the planner sets the price right?

She expected $3000 to cover food for 50, catering, decor, dj, party bus and event hall. You get what you pay for. Average sweet 16 is around $8,000-$25,000. She’s insane for hiring her. Red flag the moment she heard her price.

usually pretty hard to win these types of cases, but looks like the plaintiff is in luck. the judge has a low threshold for catering expectations and tells a lot of people, who are countersuing for slander, that it's the plaintiff's right to leave a bad review, but doesn't award the plaintiff anything.

Some parents don't have a huge celebration every birthday. Just the milestones. Ex. 1yo, 10 yo, 16, 18 and 21. It's a great way to ensure happy memories and not breaking the bank every year. A sweet 16 party is fine. Maybe not for you but it's uncalled for to call her a brat when she can celebrate it.
