  • Scrub into surgery with me!
    Also yes, I am allowed to wear nail polish during surgery. Here is a really great paper on it if your curious:
    The effect of nail characteristics on surface bacterial counts of surgical personnel before and after scrubbing by Hardy et al.
    This study’s results showed that nail length, not nail polish, was the determining factor for bacterial quantities.

      I don't understand this. What did you think, that vets operate on your pet with filthy hands or something? Sterilization and hygiene is number one rule for any successful surgery, regardless of who or what the patient is.

    Imagine that back when doctors first started doing surgery, they did it with their bare hands, and didn’t even wash their hands first. No wonder so many died from infection. Just by implementing hand washing saved a lot of lives!

    I am so thankful for vets. My lil guy had to undergo patella surgery on his left hind leg about a year ago. It had come to the point that he couldn't keep it in place by shaking his leg like he'd got used to doing. We had a couple extremely scary events (he's allergic to some component in anaesthesia and he had an epileptic episode, so we had to reschedule surgery with a different anaesthetic just to be safe. I literally went to pick him up in fucking tears). It was SO scary, but I had full faith in the doc who was taking care of him. He's doing awesome nowadays. We still have to keep him from taking things too far (climbing a hill for too long) but other than that, he's like a whole new dog.

    Been working at a vet for 16 years now and I love it. Now my vet is 76 years old and I bet the times were different but he does exactly what she does but doesn’t scrub as much as she does! He simply washes hands then does the rest. How the times have changed!

    I got to scrub into a few surgeries when I did work experience as an equine vet nurse. It was so exciting. We did an eye surgery, a colic surgery, and something else. It was one of the best experiences of my life all the patients recovered very well. I wish I was smarter and could become a vet. They let me actually help out. I got to winch the horse up on to the table. And did the suction for the colic. And I got to draw the blood for the plasma ointment we made for the eye surgery. The worst one I got to be a part of was a breach birth of a foal from my aunties stud that I worked at. The foal had to be dismantled inside the mare and removed piece by piece. I cried so much and realised I also don't have the heart for it.

    • @Tat2d_Barbi_420

      Wow! It had to be removed piece by piece? Really? I’ve never heard of anything like that before 😳😳

    • @bri5155
      @bri5155 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That must have been so hard to watch! But all the more reason why we need vets with a heart as kind as yours! If you don’t want to become a vet because you don’t have the heart for it, that’s one thing, but if you’re only not doing it because you don’t think you’re smart enough, that’s not a good enough reason to not pursue it. You ARE smart enough to be a vet or anything else you want to be. If you’re willing to work and study hard you can totally do it! Sometimes our brains lie to us and try to convince us that we aren’t good enough or smart enough. But that a lie, because you absolutely are smart enough to succeed in whatever field you choose. You got this! God Bless!

    This is rly interesting to see. It seems like the equivalent of scrub in for deliveries that human docs do. The general surgery scrub is a bit more intense. I got told to restart when my arms dropped a bit too much to pick up gloves and they wanted 10-20 per side instead of 5-10. Hospitals however are WAY dirtier than clinics with some rly scary bacteria.

      I work in the vet clinic at an animal shelter and I'd be lying if I said we didn't see some horrible shit. I'm lucky enough to work with an amazing team though and I really think that's the key to being able to get through day after day and not take everything home with you at night. You inevitably still do sometimes though, so you really have to hold onto those good cases when they come. We joke that crying is part of the job description in the vet clinic but sometimes you do just need to take a good cry break and let it out.
      As far as the gore, I've never been bothered by it personally although there are definitely some very strong smells that can be a bit difficult. For me, analyzing and trying to learn from science of each particular situation rather than viewing things as just superficially disgusting help a lot. I also highly recommend the other commenter's suggestion of becoming a VA. It'll really show you if it's the field for you or not.

      Shadow or volunteer at a vet clinic if possible before investing time and cost to be a vet or vet tech. Expect to commit to ~8 yrs incl 4 yrs of university and 4 in vet school to earn Dr of veterinary medicine, or D.V.M. degree. Cost: avg 4 yrs vet school is $200,000+ for in-state and $275,000 for out-of-state plus 4 yrs college/university to qualify.
      Vet techs associate’s degree cost: about $1,300-$12,000 for in-state tuition and resident fees or $8,000-$30,000 for out-of-state tuition and fees. Community colleges have lower tuition rates than state or private schools, ie Dallas costs $2,400 for residents or $8,280 for non-residents taking 6 semesters of 12 credits each.
      All info easy to find online. Good luck what ever you choose.
