  • I sat down and had a beer and decided to talk about, what to do six months before you move to Thailand. These are just a few of my suggestions. You will decide what works best for you.

Here's a few links for my favorite credit cards. I try to check the links often, but let me know if there is a problem. If they change the offer on the card, I may need to update the link. Full disclosure, I get a few airline miles for referring a new customer. You should get the same public offer at no additional cost. Thank you very much.

A few people mentioned you can just request a new passport for any reason. I didn't know that. I'm always learning. So no need for my page tear technique. Plus, I should have mentioned to get the larger US, 52 page passport. In the UK, Canada, etc.. get as many pages as you can get. Not only for traveling, but visas often times take a full page or two. Thanks for watching. Joe

so do you know of any services that I can send lots of my stuff through some type of mail UPS, FedEx, and that yellow one they use in Thailand I forgot the name? whatever service so I can eliminate not packing so much luggage? sorry for my trouble. Thanks again

I'm not sure about such a service. If you can get them to Thailand, La La Move is a great service to move anything around Thailand. To ship heavy boxes to Thailand would probably cost way more than the airlines. I shipped a box of scarves once to California from Thailand. They arrived smelling like bug spray in about 6 weeks. I'd never do that again. These were sealed in a plastic bag inside a box. I think they opened the plastic and sprayed the scarves. $300 of scarves went into the garbage. She tried dry cleaning one and it still smelled.

@@jimbrown2485 Yes, like I said, I would much rather deal with the airlines. Get your two free 50 lb cases, buy a third if you must. Pay/tip someone to carry them in the US and Thailand. You will come out way ahead of mailing anything. For $600, you can probably bring 3 large suitcases and 2 large boxes.
You just need to do the math on what you "really" need over here. I brought three large suitcases of brand new clothes. Over two years later, one suitcase hasn't been opened. It has two pairs of new shoes, two pairs of new jeans. I'm still wearing the first new pair of jeans I brought and the pair I wore the last five years before I moved. The rest of the stuff is just in the way. I may break out a new pair of Nike's, but I could have also just bought them here for $20 extra dollars. Instead I have a shoe and jeans storage area in my closet. If I would have paid $600 to move it over, I would be upset. If they arrives smelling like bug sprayed, I'd be more than mad at myself.
Bring the iPads, laptops. Sure, that's cheaper at Costco or Best Buy than here. Bring what clothes you can't live without. Pick up some new items too. But, try to keep it simple. You don't need to bring 10 years of clothes. It's all here. Wait until the holiday sales or half year sale in July. My girlfriend just got a $200 pair of Adidas running shoes for $70 in Bangkok. She could have got the cheap Adidas that you see at Costco everyday for $30, for probably $20 here on sale. But, she likes to run, so she knows her shoes. It's all here. Paying hundreds to have a bunch of stuff in the closet for three years, just isn't worth it. Especially if it stinks like bug spray or the salmon is was sitting next too. My two cents anyway

And know I've learned to leave most all of my clothes there in Thailand because last time I brought more than half of the clothes back.
And I bought a 8 pair of nice running gym shoes such as Adidas ,Nike ect... To give to my friends there in Thailand but it sounds like I can buy the same shoes there for a little more money? Sounds like I'm spending my wheels?
But as for the 4 iPads and 2 iPhones maybe I'm spinning my wheels but I'm getting excellent bargain prices here.
Somebody there in Thailand told me to take all the Apple iPads iPhones stuff out of the boxes but I want to give them for birthday presents , as he told me to throw the boxes away is the Thailand immigration officers will spot them on the radar luggage and give me a problem??

I really don't. When I came over I had three large suitcases and a guitar. To be honest, I would have been fine with one large suitcase. After two years, I still have a few dozen brand new shirts and a few pairs of new jeans and shoes in one suitcase. I used points and flew first class, so 3 large suitcases was free. But, today it's just stuff in the way.
I did ship a box of scarves and collectables home once. It was about $100 for a small box, maybe 5 pounds. The scarves were all destroyed. I wrapped them in a few plastic garbage bags. They opened the bags and sprayed bug spray somewhere along the line. I wouldn't bother shipping anything myself. A large box will be double the price of the airline and still take 6 weeks to arrive.
I saw a video of a guy who must have shipped half the items from his home in Texas to Thailand. He shipped an ironing board of all things. His favorite chair, etc.. I think he must have paid thousands. He lasted less than a year and wanted to move home. He was complaining he couldn't afford to ship everything home.
For what it's worth, pay the airline to bring what you can't live without. If that cost $500 for two or three large boxes or extra suitcases, that's what it cost. I'd recommend to get rid of "stuff" Trust me I had a house with 56 years of stuff. It felt good to give tools I collected to young people that would use them. Sure, I paid thousands for all that stuff. I sold a few things. But, having a friend of the family using my old guitar or tools feels better to me than having a few extra bucks.

After, you deposit at least 65k into the Thai account for 12 months, you request to switch from keeping the 800k to 65k method. You must show 12 months of statement. The embassy used to give a letter. The US embassy (not sure if you are from the US) stopped all that years ago. No getting around the 12 month rule these days.
You can get a Non OA from abroad. Not sure how that works. I think you need to show 800k in a foreign bank or 65k monthly in a foreign. You will need Thai health insurance. I have no idea of the cost.
If you don't have (or don't want to put the 800k in a Thai account, you need an agent. They charge around $3000 for year one. To get the Non O here. Not sure if it's cheaper if you get the Non O and just need the 800k for an extension. I never used an agent. Then every year they charge around $500 to show the 800k for you. so do the math. • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

You might. You can be asked in any country for your exit proof. It probably happens more to a 20 something with a huge backpack, but I've been asked 1 time in 100 airports. In the case of Thailand, they give instructions to the airlines to ask. The only time I didn't have an onward travel ticket was when I retired and moved here. I had never been asked on a half dozen flights to Bangkok. So I just risked it. I had a Japan Airlines First Class ticket. On points of course. I went to check a bag and they said I could not board without proof of onward travel. I bought a $21 ticket to Cambodia. No biggie. I've heard of some people buying a cheap bus ticket.
There are websites that buy you a refundable ticket and charge you $15. You can also just buy a refundable ticket. Or get a $25 ticket one-way to Malaysia on Air Asia. I have never been asked in Thailand. That might be a question if you fly into the country over and over on a 60 day exempt stamp. Today I have a long term visa, so it's not an issue.
So, if you want to be 100% prepared, get a cheap ticket. If it really is a throw-away, get it for day 29. I'm not sure where you are coming from, but they might have some old info. Most countries still pass out 30-day stamps. Have a great flight. If you are in Bangkok Monday Sept 2, swing by O' Shea's at 5pm on Sukhumvit Soi 33/1. A few subscribers are getting together. Most countries are still 30 days. Thailand was 45 days for two months after the health situation. But, if you are going to the trouble of a throw away, just do 29 days. Save the argument at the Delta or United desk with a 26 year old. It's a rare chance that will happen. But who cares. It's just a throw away.
Unless you want to take a trip at day 59. Then come back and get another 60 days to complete the visa. Then I would get a real ticket for a side-trip. I'm an over planner, but I might have a screen shot prepared that says you get 60 days visa exempt on arrival. Most modern phones have one or two SIM slots and can also take eSIMS. I must have five in my phone. Malaysia, Hong Kong, etc.. Most of us that live here just get a plan where you load minutes. Maybe $10 or $15 a month. Give them a $100 and not worry about the thing for a year. I have no idea how to load an eSim. Glad that you mentioned your ideas and advice on how to accumulate FF mile deals by applying for certain credit cards and then satisfying a low ($2500) spending requirement and you get 50,000 miles on one card and 70,000 miles on another by only paying the $95 yearly enrollment fee… I just did that and am about to fly from South Louisiana one way in Business Class on a separate ticket (paid $540) to LAX then one way on Japan Airlines to Osaka (6 hr. Layover) then to BKK ALL in Business Class… The one way ticket from LAX to BKK was 70,000 FF miles… So, I’m flying one way from South Louisiana to BKK in Business Class and it is only costing me $540 + 70,000 FF miles which only cost me $95 and now I still have 50,000 FF left to apply towards my one way ticket back to the U.S. - Sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through but it really wasn’t and this one way ticket, in Business Class, would’ve cost +/- $4000 USD!!! If I had paid cash for it… So the time and effort is more than worth it… Gracias José 👍🏻
