Cher's Believe is widely recognized as the first song where autotune was used stylistically... that's why they chose to use it for that particular song.
Also, the studio where they record their medleys have said that they have them so nailed down when they show up to record that they can't recall the group ever taking more than 4 takes. And 2 of those are usually just to see if they could do better. Now, that was for their one-take medleys like their "Evolution of" series, but I would bet it still applies to this one they did during quarantine and thus used their panel video format instead of the 5 of them on/around a couch.
The auto tune was not just a "stylistic" choice they made but it really was done as an homage to Cher and the sound that she created in the original song. A very smart choice on PTX's part.
Yup, that would be the one of a kind Mitch Grassi with the counter tenor voice. PTX fans refer to the expression people have when they first his range as "Mitch face" (or less politely being Mitch slapped). All of them have tremendous ranges, from baritone Scott Hoying (the blond) who has a killer high range and also covers the bass line when bass Matt Sallee (black and blue check jacket) has a solo, mezzo soprano Kirsti Maldonado and world class beatboxer, concert quality cellist and lovely tenor voiced Kevin (KO) Olusola (white sport coat). They never use autotune but used it specifically in this one because it was so common in 90's music, especially by Cher. It's done here not as a crutch but as an homage. By the way they perform these medleys live in concert as well! Thanks for covering it!
@@VoxTapeStudios There are a few songs where it can really hit you (thus the 'Mitch Slapped' reference), Hallelujah probably being the best example. This was just a taste (though an admittedly good one) of what Mitch can do. The guy is freaking amazing!
To say they never do it is a bit of a stretch. I feel like that's setting people up for false expectations. Almost every studio version is adjusted and pitch corrected. But they don't use pitch correction or autotune in their live performances.
There's a live performance of them doing Halleluiah, which you can compare and contrast to the studio version. It's scary how on point they are live...
Also check out Daft Punk. There is the official video, the Live video and also the VIP/Green Room - no mic - version which go to prove the quality of PTX!
Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! There are a lot of Pentatonix fans ("Pentaholics"} that look for various reactions from professional singers and vocal coaches. Their first Grammy was for their "Daft Punk Medley" video which they produced for $400 in a closet. They've since won two more. Their renditions of "Hallelujah", "Sounds of Silence", and "Mad World" are something you must hear, and you can find live versions of the first two!
I'd like to propose adding their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" to this list. The video adds meaning to the song -- and the song is incredibly meaningful already.
Are you sure you want to do down this rabbit hole? It is really deep.... For Mitch, some of his high lights, Havana, for vocal gymnastics. Hallelujah as the set up for his part is so well done. Ultimately, when you are ready.. A-ha live Singapore . But that is for advanced PTX reactions. But pick any other PTX you want, they are all shockingly good.
Mitch's voice always amazes me, but it's Kirstin's voice that gives me goosebumps or chills, whatever people call them. Like when she sings in Hallelujah. Chills. This medley is so good.
I was looking to see if you made any videos reviewing PTX. There is a think called "Mitch face". The term was coined by one of the judges on the competition they were in. It is the face nearly everyone makes when Mitch goes high.
If you guys close your eyes while listening, you are not only reminded of these great songs, but also of those late night infomercials that would sell the "90's Greatest Hits" CD collection for only $19.99
The experience of listening to Pentatonix is enhanced 100X using headphones or at least earbuds‼️ Loved your reaction🤩 Please react to Daft Punk, Imagine or Amazing Grace next. ❤️fromOregon🇺🇸
There is an old joke about PTX.....PTX is sooooo good that PTX doesn't need autotune but autotune needs PTX....I do hope you stay and keep on reacting....Our family is quite large and there is A LOT to listen to....The "high" guy is Mitch and he and the other's will not disappoint you....I hope to see you on the flip side....ENJOY!!!
Great reaction! Love Mitch’s clear high notes, but his entire range is stunning. Would love to see your reaction to their cover of The Prayer. I have followed this band for 11 years. IMO it’s the bast arrangement, and possibly best vocals. So beautiful. And Mitch’s astounding voice has center stage.
Hope this exposure to PTX has intrigued you enough that you'll explore more of their entertaining videos and gorgeous songs. We fans all have so many faves, you're sure to find your own. Hope you react to more - live or studio.....both are excellent.
if you want a song that really shows off mitch’s technique, i’d recommend their live cover of gold by kiiara. it’s not particularly high, but he recreates the chorus live which is ridiculously hard and super impressive!
AHHHHH to be 17 again when these came out ... i was working door security before i was even old enough to drink 9 years of epic thursday friday saturday nights litening to these tunes watching allmost 500 people on the 3 dancefloors.... in Blackpool U.K
Thanks for the great reaction. The Vocoder/ Auto Tune was used on "Believe" not just as a "stylistic choice" but as an homage to the Cher tract itself. "Believe" without Auto Tune would not even be close to the song people remember.
They did a live version at the Hollywood Bowl 2022 and it almost sounds exactly like the video. They don't use autotune in it either. Also, a good video to watch is a live version of their Daft Punk. It is recorded on a cell phone in a room with no mics. A very talented group.
Just a note: Floor Jansen doesn't use auto tune. She is the lead singer of Nightwish, a Finnish symphonic metal band. Best first song to listen to is Ghost Love Score from the Wacken 2013 open air music festival. This is one of the few bands best to watch live. Floor's vocal range is D3 to F6. She sings many different styles.
Haven’t seen this here yet, so it’s worth mentioning that they won their third Grammy for their collaboration with Dolly Parton on Jolene. Mitch is bald in that video but he and Kirstin are always changing their looks.
You should check out Pentatonix' "Hallelujah" (Mitch particularly shines), "Mary Did You Know", and "Amazing Grace"! Also, the third major acapella group, Home Free, especially "Man of Constant Sorrow" and "Ring of Fire with Avi Kaplin" (of Pentatonix!)
Mitch is a true Counter Tenor Kirstie is a Nezzo soprano Scott is a bari-bass , Matt is a bass- baritone Kevin is a miracle beat boxer/ cello player Sax Player and also a tenor with an unbelievable falsetto
Pentatonix are so freaking amazing! I don't even know how many times I've listened to this medley. The last song 'finally' is my favorite, but like you said there were soo many good ones!
pentatonix does not use auto-tune...they did use it in this video to pay homage to cher for her using it in believe....but their other videos dont have auto-tune.
A quick primer on the big three groups in the TH-cam acapella world: If Pentatonix are the school student council, then Voiceplay are the theater dorks and Home Free are the dudes in the parking lot throwing a tailgate kegger.
I get it you’re young at this song you didn’t know but I appreciate your show. Thank you for playing the Pentatonix for the people who don’t know the millennials. Yes they play my music from the 80s and 90s so thank you very much
Please check out Pentatonix - The Evolution of Rhianna! 🙏 It will be a great video of them doing one of their famous mash-ups live in the studio in one take! You’ll love it!
Mitch is, well, Mitch.. Pentatonics only has (at any time) five singers who just don't understand vocal limits! Great reaction! I especially recommend everything PTX has ever done...
This was an awesome reaction thank you! Its funny because at the point you started talking about auto tune, the song they were singing was the first major hit that featured it. Thats the song that set off the auto tune era. Definitely check out more of their stuff if this is the first time hearing them!
You could try to listen to their evolution songs they are all live performances and one takes. No hiding there, as if they ever needed that. They are like a walking radio and you almost dont notice the difference. It's amazing. Also headphones is a good idea for all accapella music to be able to hear the base singers better, incl all the layers of harmony.
Just stumbled on your PTX reaction, loved it and subscribed. PTX has an extensive catalog of music both covers and original and they do a lot of medleys like this. Their "Daft Punk" medley won them their first Grammy for "Best Arrangement - Instrumental or a Capella", and I recommend it very highly. I also highly recommend their cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody". You will be amazed. For something a little different I would recommend "The Wizard of Ahhhs, featuring Pentatonix ", written, directed and produced by Todrick Hall. Of course you can not go wrong with their most viewed Official Video, "Hallelujah" (over 600 million views), and their recent video of "Amazing Grace" is excellent. Something unexpected is "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", a song without words performed by a group without instruments, simply amazing and their second Grammy, same category as "Daft Punk". There's a lot more to recommend and I'm sure other Pentaholics will be happy to add to my list. Keep up the good work and welcome to the family.
I hope you will get to know this group. It is then that you will find out they are just as good live. Check out their many hits. This one is terrific, but there are others that are even better.
I loved all the 90’s songs - their transitions are the best. Please react to Pentatonix cover of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis “Can’t Hold Us” - the energy is off the charts and they do a great job, including rapping!
I promise you they sound just as good live! Mitch(Glassi) (aka Mr. How high can I go)has a cover of a Billie Eilish's Your Power that is totally amazing if you want to see what he can do.
So generally they don't use auto tune because they want to have their live performances sound the same. This is one of those exceptions where they used it on two of the songs in the medley because the originals used them. They used it on Blue and of course with Cher. Also, a suggestion, when listening to PTX its always better to listen with headphones. Not sure if you are using them or not, but thought I would mention it.
There are so many by this group. Check out Amazing Grace and Bohemian Rhapsody. Also Homefree is another accapella group. Check out their version of Man of Constant Sorrow.
Check out some of their live performances or any of the evolution vids. PTX is soooooo good. Yes, they use autotune in this medley for artistic reasons, but they absolutely do not need it. I've seen them in concert multiple times and they are so great live.
For more PENTATONIX please try: Daft Punk Medley, Havana, AHA Live (SIngapore), Gold, Amazing Grace, Hallelujah, Imagine, Sound of Silence. Also, their Christmas songs are works of art and can be enjoyed year-around. You are a future PENTAHOLIC! WELCOME to the PTX rabbit hole! Duke
The three core singers sung together in high school as “The Trio”. They have had years to perfect their harmonies. They added the bass and the beatboxer to become Pentatonix. They do not do anything in the video that they can’t do live. Some layering may be added. Consider Reacting to Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Punk, Love Again (an original), and Sound of Silence.
@@VoxTapeStudios Their latest album, The Lucky Ones released last February, is all original music. Love Again is older though. Another early original, Sing is super fun to watch and listen to.
if you want to hear medleys from pentatonix then their evolution videos are done live, just a heads up if you do is that the bass singer will be different in the older videos as Avi (the old bass) left and Matt (new bass) took his place.
Other good Mitch pieces, "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Be My Eyes", also "Aha" especially one of the live versions like Singapore. just for fun ,"Daft Punk", "Can't Hold Us", and "Havana" or "Come Along"
Cher's Believe is widely recognized as the first song using autotune/voice adjustment...now being the music tech nerd I am with Cher it was done with a Vocorder which used an input voice wave and an output carrier wave from a synthesizer to compress the voice. The Vocorder did not adjust pitch at all just gave it that synth sound at Cher's normal pitch. Autotune can adjust the pitch of the voice. Just throwing that out. Love the reaction by the way! subbed.
Huh..... One video was all it took.... I subbed already :) If you're into hearing more Pentatonix, I would definitely suggest their covers of Hallelujah, The Sound of Silence, Amazing Grace, Daft Punk, and Mad World. They do have some original stuff as well which I'm a fan of, such as Coffee In Bed.
Yeah mitch does that to all of us when he goes that high so clean. The percussion being held strong by Matt and Kevin is unbelievable you could fool people into thinking those were drums and synthesizers
You don't have to get over Mitch. He's remarkable as are the others. Yes, the auto-tune is on purpose! You have lots of fun and tears ahead with Pentatonix.
I advise you to look at covers of Bohemian Rhapsody and Sound Of Silence from Pentatonix (and Pentatonix-Hallelujah too). These more interesting they are more interesting in terms of vocals :)
@@VoxTapeStudios Mitch's highest note recorded for a PTX song is A5. B4 for his chest voice, according to the most recent video breakdown I've watched (C3 was his lowest in a song in 2019 but I'm sure I've seen breakdowns mark him as lower in some previous songs).
Welcome to the acapella rabbit hole! Some songs I think are a good intro to these three acapella groups. There is a ton of great songs from these, but these I feel should be heard at some point :) Pentatonix - Hallelujah Pentatonix - The Sound Of Silence Pentatonix - Shallow (Acapella + Cello) Home Free - Ring Of Fire (Featuring Avi Kaplan Of Pentatonix, he later left and got replaced by Matt) Home Free - Man Of Constant Sorrow And I saw that you already listened to Geoff Castellucci so you might already know he is also a member of Voiceplay. Voiceplay Feat. Omar Cardona - Carry On My Wayward Son Voiceplay Feat. Jose Rosario Jr. - My Mother Told Me Voiceplay - Oogie Boogie’s Song | The Nightmare Before Christmas

I look forward to you reacting to their official video for "Hallelujah" and their live performance of it during their first Christmas special 2016 (of 3). Love the reaction by the way! subbed.
Huh..... One video was all it took.... I subbed already :)
If you're into hearing more Pentatonix, I would definitely suggest their covers of Hallelujah, The Sound of Silence, Amazing Grace, Daft Punk, and Mad World. They do have some original stuff as well which I'm a fan of, such as Coffee In Bed.
Yeah mitch does that to all of us when he goes that high so clean. The percussion being held strong by Matt and Kevin is unbelievable you could fool people into thinking those were drums and synthesizers
Idk why, but it makes me so happy to see her reacting to ptx. The reaction to mitch is just amazing haha. Hopefully more ptx reaction videos soon!
You will gain a loyal and supportive Fandom if you continue down the pentatonix road....
I would suggest reacting to their original song Love Again it's so good!
Thanks! I'll check it out!
You've been Mitch slapped 🤣
For our mitch, that is his mid-range. He can go much higher 5 or 6 octaves.
WOW!
@@VoxTapeStudios Mitch's highest note recorded for a PTX song is A5. B4 for his chest voice, according to the most recent video breakdown I've watched (C3 was his lowest in a song in 2019 but I'm sure I've seen breakdowns mark him as lower in some previous songs).
okay .. i have subscribe ... good one Lara ... enjoyed it ..
You have officially been Mitch-slapped!! Lol
Welcome to the acapella rabbit hole!
Some songs I think are a good intro to these three acapella groups. There is a ton of great songs from these, but these I feel should be heard at some point :)
Pentatonix - Hallelujah
Pentatonix - The Sound Of Silence
Pentatonix - Shallow (Acapella + Cello)
Home Free - Ring Of Fire (Featuring Avi Kaplan Of Pentatonix, he later left and got replaced by Matt)
Home Free - Man Of Constant Sorrow
And I saw that you already listened to Geoff Castellucci so you might already know he is also a member of Voiceplay.
Voiceplay Feat. Omar Cardona - Carry On My Wayward Son
Voiceplay Feat. Jose Rosario Jr. - My Mother Told Me
Voiceplay - Oogie Boogie’s Song | The Nightmare Before Christmas
i love this song but oof when i hear it again here in ahhhhh
The Auto-Tune used here is an homage to Cher who was the first recording artist to use it on a recording. Which was Believe.
Hi, great channel, please Say Something by Pentatonix and Cover Gold. Thanks
Yes Gold! But please watch the origanal first (if you are not familiar with the song or singer) just to show what Mitch does!
They've been together since high school (10 years) so they they even think the same...
Great reaction. Thank you. I hope that you will react to more Pentatonix videos. I look forward to you reacting to their official video for "Hallelujah" and their live performance of it during their first Christmas special 2016 (of 3). Also "Sound Of Silence" official video and their live performance on Jimmy Kimmel's show are great to compare. They have hundreds of awesome songs and videos. Anything that you choose will be appreciated.
